What questions do you have about cortisone / corticosteroid injections?

    • @DazLarson
      @DazLarson Год назад +2

Can the injected cortisone travel systemically to harm other joints? I ask this because: With hesitation, I had such an injection two weeks ago for my triggering thumb joint. It not only didn’t help, but my palm (near where the injection was done) is now giving me problems for the first time ever. I then asked the doctor if she can do a PRP injection (upon discovering your channel) which I would happily pay for out-of-pocket, or at least a referral to hand therapy, but she simply referred me to a hand surgeon. I’ve begun taking UC-ii collagen and glucosamine/chondroitin in hopes of preventing any further destruction. (I had cortisone injections three years ago for both knees-one time only- and at the same time began a keto diet and intermittent fasting and never had any further knee problems, so I was shocked to have suddenly had such a problem with my thumb.)

I used to occasionally get Cortisone injections into the facet joint area in my back due to severe back pain. These injections saved my life! It has been years since I have had one, but you will never convince me otherwise. I realize the harm that these injections may cause, but I got them infrequently and eventually did not need them anymore. I would have had to have a radical surgery in my back without these injections.

My mother use to get cortisone shots in her knees for her arthritis. It really relieved her of the discomfort of arthritis & helped her to be mobile. Once the shot started wearing off, her mobility changed. The swelling, pain , discomfort came back. After getting these shots randomly over a period of time, the doctor said they would'nt be able to continue due to risk that those shots can eventually have . If you do decide to get a cortisone shot, pick a Dr that will listen to you. My Orthopedic referred me to get a HA shot at pain mgt Dr office. This Dr insisted I needed a cortisone shot before getting a HA Shot. I told him I was allergic to cortisone and he brushed me off saying my reactions were common side effects. I hesitantly agreed because I really wanted the HA shot. The day of the shot, I again mentioned my allergy concern to the nurse and Dr. 2 separate times. He again said not to worry. Cortisone is very safe. Well, you guessed it. About 5-10 min after the shot, while we were driving I went into anaphylaxis shock. After going to the Urgent care, I now carry a Epi pen. I also got tested at my Allergest office and testing confirmed it. Very, very rare. Be careful and pick a Dr you trust.

I've heard hospice/pallitive care nurses say that morphine is given to terminal patients with emphysema and congestive heart failure to help them relax and breathe easier. Hospitals often send patients home or to long term care when when there is nothing else they do for them. Doctors and hospitals really don't explain things to families and friend very well. I'd request a copy of you mother's hospital records and get an appointment with your family doctor and go over the records together and see for yourself. My mother was having renal failure (kidney) and refused dyalasis and was sent to a hospice from the hospital and she died a week later at age 87. Again, sorry for your loss.

I’m a retired physical therapist/athletic trainer. In the early 90s, I was well aware that they already knew that cortisone injections actually weakened connective tissue. I would steer patients away from it way back then. What was worse was the physicians that would inject repeatedly…more than what was recommended at the time (no more than 3 injections). What’s worse was/is insurance demanding that injections be tried prior to surgical repair. Why is it that now, some 30 plus years later, they are now bringing attention to the problems when they knew a long time ago. More than 30 years ago, we knew it was a cover for pain, that would often mask it to the point that patients would sustain further injury by using an injured joint, but didn’t “cure” the cause of the pain.

Thank you for mentioning this. From the medical assistant to physicians assistant to every doctor I've been seeing, each one keeps pressuring me to go the cortisone shot route for my OA in my hip.
My orthopedic doc said I have "moderate" OA. Yes, it hurts after I've overused it or made a bad move but I NEVER asked them for any pain relief. It's manageable. In fact, I only use an infrared light therapy pad for any pain. No negative side effects. Puts me to sleep, too.
I can only guess Doctors get some kind of kickback from Big Pharma for continually pushing these drugs on us. It's kind of amoral, especially in light of possible horrible side effects now known to us.
I feel like my insurance (Medicare (Dis)Adavantage) will deny me hip replacement surgery unless and until I relent. I just refuse.

I had my first steroid shot into my lower back about a year ago.
I was having severe pain with sacroiliitis!!!
When you are in that much pain it's hard to care about side effects... You're only wanting relief!
So far the pain has not returned.
    Thank God!!!
I believe that there are negative side effects to steroid shots, but, I would probably have to do it again if really needed for pain relief.

Years ago I had a total of two cortisone shots taken over three months time for Morton's Neuroma - a pinched nerve between two toes. My Doctor cautioned withing the first 5 minutes of our first meeting that I could only take a total of three shots. No one else could diagnose the problem but he was totally certain of the problem. He was right. The pain stopped within minutes after months of suffering. I now have a torn Gluteous minimus muscle. They want to give me a cortisone shot to alleviate the pain. I am uncertain if I want to do that. I take Celebrex and it helps but wears off before I can take the next pill. Surgeons are hard to come by and I am on hold right now. Good video.

The corticosteroids joint injections are for temporary relief of joint pain. It is not good if the underlying cause of joint disease is not addressed. For example in R/A .in O/ A the patients are better by the exercises and more when targeted exercises are recommended according to the diagnosis weakness of one or many of the muscles involved. The biggest problem I found after cortisone injections is as because pain is reduced or diminished the second day the patient started using the joint as a normal joint. Keeping in view of the underlying cause is not reduced or finished yet the careless use of disease joint is demaged more because before it pain itself was protecting the joint excessive use .
Two things if used l reduces the further damage is ask the patient to take care of the joint as it was before the injection. Not squat or walking longer distances.
    Give problem DMARD medicine in
R/ A patients and keep on monitoring the progress through blood tests and in O/ A patient try to find any cartilage or ligament damage by MRI and take care it by exercises, rest and if possible corrections by arthroscopy.
Injection into the tendon is the worst thing, never ever to do it, if needed just infiltrate outside the tendon or ligament parallel.

I was able to go 2 years before I was ready to do surgery on my right. My hands are everything to me. If I wasn't able to use them, I don't know what I would do. I might even check out of this life. I got the surgery on my right hand last Feb. 17. After 5 months, I still have pain and still need my thumb brace after a day of working on cars like today, or heavy yard work. Four years ago, I suffered from a tear in my left hip labrum. The pain was unbelievable and the worst I had ever felt in my life. Nothing would stop the pain, except for Kratom, which would only last about 30 minutes, or 800 mg ibuprofen, which didn't get rid of the pain. It was only after getting the corticosteroid shot directly in my hip along with time was I able to resume a normal relatively pain free life. I haven't needed any additional shots since then. I doubt this physician has ever experienced that kind of severe pain; like most physicians, he probably follows flow charts and does what he was told to do in college rather than actually listening to his patients and understanding the severity of their pain.

Insurance seems to pay for things that do more harm than good in the long run. Pharmaceuticals own everything. I have had good success with PRP, stem cells, Traumeel, and BPC157. Germany uses Traumeel (outlawed in the US), which is all natural. It heals as well as minimizing inflammation and pain. BPC157 is a natural-like peptide that also heals tendon and joint damage. There are alternatives out there, but unfortunately, insurance does not cover it.

Often a shot can result in a miraculous recovery. At age 17, 55 years ago I had a portion of cartilage trimmed from my right knee.
This knee would flare up from time to time but artritis never set in. X-rays would confirm thru the years that my knee was a little torn up inside. In 2016 I hurt my knee getting into the 3rd of one of those bloody SUVs.
I limped for 9 months and even had trouble operating the gas pedal on my car during an extended trip.
Finally I relented and went to the Doctor. I received a shot directly into the knee.
I experienced relief almost immediately and my knee felt noticeably better as I walked back to the car.
By the next day I felt cured. I’ve been good for 6 years. I walk 5 km 4 days a week and I weigh 260 pounds so the knee has been tested. LOL

I had 3 Cortisone injections within a year in 2017, one in my shoulder that had a Rotator Cuff tear and the 2 in both hips due to Osteo Arthritis. They helped a lot BUT, in late 2019 I was, unknowingly, basically dying and this culminated in Feb 2020 with me unconscious and with a trip to Casualty/Emergency. The Triage Nurse struggled to find readings on multiple tests and I was taken through straight away. After a multitude of tests, brain MRI, CT Scans, Heart tests, etc, I was diagnosed with Addison's Disease, an Autoimmune Disorder. My Adrenal Glands are no longer producing Cortisol. FYI, we NEED this hormone to stay alive. So now I take Hydrocortisone steroids everyday, for the rest of my life, just to stay alive. I was told by a medical person that the Cortisone injections could have impacted my Pituitary and Adrenal Glands into falsely thinking I had enough Cortisol in me. I will never have another Cortisone injection, no matter the pain.

I was in denial and still can't believe it. How could I injure both knees in 10 mos.? Went back to my ortho and he couldn't believe it either. He thought it was a underlying degenerative issue, although I have no significant arthritis & mild cartledge space loss. I didn't believe his diagnosis. So he gave me a cortisone shot, so I thought it might help.. 2 days later the worst pain I ever had, I could not stand up or walk w/out severe pain. 3 wks. later I am no better I cannot walk w/out a walker. I am at least 50% worse than when I had the shot. My knee feels tight and has swelling, and has electric-shock-like pain, & throbbing & sharp pains. I went to the ER thinking I had DVT, but, a D-Dimer test was neg. The PA gave me Tramadol, I never asked for it, but, I needed it l. I go back to my ortho tomorrow. I think he should do a MRI, which hasn't been done yet. Something is wrong. I just can't do another knee. I could scream! A nightmare injury! I want to wake up from this nightmare. I know about the Cortisone Flare, but, don't think it's what I have. Is that common?

Lots of studies that suggest cortisone is no better than placebo injections. Lots of studies suggest physical therapy is just as good as cortisone shots. Hyaluronic acid injections done under ultrasound guidance are superior to cortisone. Platelet rich plasma injections are also significantly better. Even dextrose injections are better. Trigger point injections around the musculature also significantly reduce pain and symptoms such that some people on the waiting list for knee replacements decided to take themselves off the list. The reality is that there are MANY other options out there. Whether or not your doctor discusses them with you...

Although I eventually left him after a little over a year n a half as he was trying to make me feel pessimistic about my issue at least thats what it seemed like. Said my issue wouldn't resolve without surgery which is misleading. also I had a bad foot issue in my right foot which eventually resolved on its own but piodatric care failed to help it. After the cortisone shot, I can cramp up four or more times a night and it's much harder to get the cramping to stop.

When joints are not working Drs don’t care about damaging them they are just going to replace them. I had it done once only worked 3 weeks! I need both knees replaced

While I can't comment on the effects of cartilage loss due to cortisone shots I'm very surprised that the study found no difference in pain reduction of cortisone vs saline. I noticed a remarkable decrease in pain after my first cortisone shot. The pain reduction was so great that there is no way it could be attributed to any placebo effect. I know it was a controlled randomized trial but somehow I am skeptical of the study results.

    haven't needed one since

At last. I refused cortisone shots after the first one put into my knee. I found it was of no benefit. I ended up having bi-lat total knee replacements at the age of 46 in 2000. I still have them.

I had bone on bone pain from OA in my knees due to previous arthroscopy to remove damaged cartilage. I got a cortisone shot in the knee that was in the worst shape, but it did not do much. I was unable to walk half a block let alone walk for an hour daily like I had been, so I tried a glucosamine/chondroitin/msm combination supplement. After only one week of taking it, I was able to walk for half an hour a day. I've kept the walking down to only half an hour, and have been fine for a couple of years now, with only occasional twinges of pain.

Cortisone shot had one done for a meniscus tear in my left knee...For 5 years the knee didn't heal, limited mobility. After the injection for 3 days it felt better. Then after the 3 days the pain and stiffness was 10 times worse. My knee finally was healed when I became a Carnivore. Eating animal product, the healing started 1 week after. 6 months later my knee is 90%, I am back to doing leg workout at the gym and the flexibility is getting better.

@@tintin-rc7sp it's going to help with degenerative conditions significantly due to the nutrient density provided by animal products especially protein. There are no negative side effects if you do the diet correctly, there are people that make negative claims about the diet which they can't support.

I got several of these shots in a couple years time, and developed avascular necrosis in my hips, knees and shoulders do you think this could have contributed to that?
