The official name was Inspection Cars. The company was Fairmont Railway Motors, manufactured in Fairmont, Mn. The Hy-Rail units on the pickups were made by the same company. The Hy-Rail has been offered since the 1960's. They were also installed on 4 door sedans and station wagons along with trucks of various sizes. The last 4 door cars with Hy-Rails were an American Motors Matadors in 1975. On the Inspection Cars the original engines were the Fairmont engines, newer ones used Onan Engines, or for greater horsepower the Kohler 4-cylinder engines were used. The Hy=Rails were offered to be installed from 3/4 ton pickups (Model 0307) up to 15-ton Ford F750 or Chevy 7500's. Repair Trucks. They also manufactured Gang Cars, to haul work crews to a site. A4's equipped with English Ford 4-cylinder engines, or A6's and A8's with American Ford Inline 6-cylinder Engines. The very first Inspection Car built by "The Motors" was in 1903, when they married a Fairmont stationary single cylinder engine, used in rural areas and on farms to power many different pieces of equipment, to a 4-man Hand Pump Cart. Fairmont Railway Motors also produced a complete line of Maintenance of Way Equipment. They were bought out by Harsco Corp in 1980, and the entire operation was moved to Columbus, S.C. in the late 1990's, and merged with 2 other Maintenance of Way Equipment manufactures that Harsco purchased' Now known as Harsco Track Technologies. I worked at The Motors" in the 1970's and 80's, in the Service Division manning the "Red Phone". When it rang, that meant someone somewhere needed a repair part yesterday. It's great to see people who really love the older equipment and spend the time, money and effort to keep them on the rails.

I remember these speeders on the PGE (Pacific Great Eastern) railway in British Columbia, in the late 50's. I recall one night my mom took my sister and I to pick up my dad at the train station (he was returning home from Vancouver). We waited and waited, then finally saw the headlight of the train approaching and got out of the car to meet it. But...that headlight belonged to a little yellow putt-putt, so we had to go back and wait some more.

Its a awesome ride, I would do that in a heart beat no questions asked. I just saw how they got turned around, really something, my eyes bulged out off my head. That is an experience of life time, that looks so much fun. I would like the enclosed car just for safety purposes. Hide your camera so will not get wet.

Having worked on a Railway [as a trackman] and traveled the rails in all sorts of weird and whacky looking contraptions I must admit that I wish I owned one of these ... and 30 - 100km of disused / abandoned railway line.
Not sure I would opt for the open air version if I could only have one ... and I would probably want a flat bed trailer to tow behind it to carry my shopping etc.

I actually have a M9 exactly like the one shown by the man that was talking only mine is ran off peddling just like a bicycle. I run it up and down the main line CSX tracks and simply just lift it off the rails when a train is coming. I have it mounted with wooden poles that slide from the front and back so you can easily move it.
If you've ever seen the old 50s or maybe 60s Canadian movie called "The Railrodder" with Buster Keaton then you've seen the same exact speeder before! Only his and these guy's have a gas powered motor on theirs and mine is simply rigged with bicycle peddle and gears...

Que buena aventura, revivir los caminos que antes transitaban las grandes locomotoras y las grandes compañías ferroviarias.Saludos desde México!!!!

Did anything fly into your face or eye? Look like you were going so fast that it would have really stung if so. Fast enough to put an eye out. Now if you gonna buy one of those little train cars you will also get the helmet/shield too right? I see the other man had a shield and for everyday action I would probably get one too. God Bless. Be safe.

The shield was for "covid". It's pretty much the same as riding on a motorcycle. Occasional bug or two never hurt anyone.

That's so cool. You get a view that people don't normally get to see. The engineers perspective. I wish l could buy that blue caboose and make a guest house out of it.

Awesome. You should see what its like on a 15,000 ton coal train 2 miles long. I was a conductor and its stress city on a real freight train. This looks more fun.
