  • Thursday marks 80 years since the D-Day invasion, where paratroopers played a key role in what was a turning point in World War II. This week hundreds of reenactors jumped from the sky to honor their bravery and sacrifice. CBS News correspondent Charlie D'Agata made that same jump over Normandy and tells his story.

@@SG_DesertFoxX97 the united states has no common language there is no official language while English is thought to be it is not unfortunately. Due to the weak government and weaker borders a flood of illegal immigrants from south America and Mexico have rushed in. In previous years a low number of immagrants were let in each year. And those immigrants had to take the citizenship test and learn english but now any cartel member can just come in

Though most of the paratroopers missed their intended drop zones on D-day it had an unexpected effect of completely confusing the Germans who had no idea where they were all coming from and diverted resources everywhere

Charlie, thank you for being honest. I can’t think of anything more terrifying than jumping from an airplane, but then when you couple that with knowing you’re jumping right into the fire…that’s a completely different level of fear. I have so much respect for those veterans that made the ultimate sacrifice. Thank you. Thank you ALL.

My great grandfather was a paratrooper in WWII. He was with the 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment in North Africa and later the 456th Parachute Field Artillery Regiment assigned to the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment in the 82nd Airborne in Sicily. He was then sent back to England to prepare for Operation Overlord when he was transferred to the 101st Airborne and jumped into Normandy, and later jumped into Holland. He also participated in the Battle of the Bulge and Western Germany. He had made 4 combat jumps during the war. He survived and passed away in 2006.

School isn't what taught me about D-day.....3 things did. Medal of Honor, The original call of duty and The swedish Band sabaton! I also would not have learned of operation husky if it wasn't for the old Call of duty games on PS2 which was another operation that featured C47 Douglas Skytrains/Dakotas. Amazing history. As a historian, if we didn't fight so hard as we did back then, who knows we could have been in the world of what the Man in the High castle is in the series.... Another thing to remember is for as dumb as my generation has become here at 24 years old, always being told by my family that I have an old soul of being 40, THIS IS THE LAST DECADE OF WWII VETS, SHED THEM LIGHT AND ENJOY YOUR TIME WITH THEM WHILE IT LASTS!!!. Its not everyday you get to meet a vet and ACTUALLY get them to talk about their past experiences.....

The real history of WW2 from the US disgusting "robber barons" who funded Hitler and the attempt for a coup in 1934 against FDR which General Smedley Butler exposed in 1934 to the possible escape of Hitler, in a book written by a Submarine veteran Harry Cooper. So many lies persist to this day about our recent history. (See the drama documentary Grey-Wolf)

Wars always change and the scale of the D-Day invasion will never be seen again. Sadly, the loss of life in a modern all-out war would be gigantic. The weapons we invented to bring an end to WWII are now too horrible to even imagine.

At least they mentioned those D-Day airborne jumped with heavy equipment, at night, and under fire. It is interesting how those who jumped on D-Day did face painting like Native Americans (or Indians as back in those days) with intent to scare the Germans that they are now facing Cheyenne Braves and other fierce warriors from various tribes. It was written Airborne had no problem getting soldiers to sign up for parachute battalions. One there is an increase in pay, two the slogan was "all our men are tough and we accept only those who are tough." So a lot of young guys say, "yeah! I wanna be tough!" But I think the parachute jump was the easy part. It is what these guys had to do once on the ground. For many way off intended DZ, lost equipment during canopy shock, and no modern technology such as NVG and GPS.
