      I’m inclined to think it’s the latter, especially for the 3rd driver who was way too close - possibly on their phone. This part of London is home to some of the wealthiest and most entitled people in the world.

    I am elderly and have not driven a car for over thirty years. If I remember correctly, you MUST ALWAYS give way to pedestrians crossing at zebra crossings. But only if there is no traffic light. If there is a traffic light, pedestrians are not allowed to cross on the red man!
    Please confirm that this is still the case.
    I ask because in other videos I have seen, it seems that pedestrians are always expected to have the right to cross, even if there is a traffic light and the pedestrians have a red signal.
    Thank you very much!

    • @Gean...de...Oliveira
      @Gean...de...Oliveira 4 дня назад +3

      Which would be something I consider completely wrong. If there's a traffic light, everybody has the right moment to go.
      I only agree with pedestrians crossing anytime if the streets are empty. So it doesn't really make any difference. 🤔
      I personally almost always wait until the traffic lights go green for me (as a pedestrian). Unless I can clearly see with no doubt there are no vehicles coming.

  • @Gean...de...Oliveira
    @Gean...de...Oliveira 4 дня назад +3

    I usually respect zebra crossing.
    There are some situations that I don't because it's obvious how it's easier for the pedestrian to wait. When I'm walking and I find myself in these situations I try to not show intention of crossing because it's easier and more efficient to just let the vehicle keep going.
    Situations like in the video I consider a complete lack of politeness. The pedestrians are clearly trying to cross. You can see it by far. You don't even need to stop, just slow down.
    By the way, you shouldn't approach intersections, specially with zebra crossings speeding. You must approach ready to make a stop. 🤔

      I'm not European. Here where I live most drivers don't respect it as well. I would say 95% of them.

    This is so common in most european countries I've been, that I've actualy wonderd, if drivers are even requested to stop by the law. In France I was once nearly run over by a driving school car on a zebra crossing. It stopped last second, although I was clearly visible for 100m+. :D

    • @richardvalvona1159
      @richardvalvona1159 9 месяцев назад +2

      Drivers are only obligated to stop once a pedestrian is actually on the crossing. If they standing on the pavement next to it, cars don't have to stop (although many do).

    • @Mortimer50145
      @Mortimer50145 Месяц назад

      @@richardvalvona1159 I've aways thought that the rule is absurd. A pedestrian has to take a leap of faith - once they step off the kerb into the road, they are hoping that the car will be able to stop.
      As a driver, I stop at a zebra when there is no-one on it in two situations: firstly, if the person is standing at the crossing on the kerb, looking to the other side - they are clearly wanting to cross; secondly if they are walking purposefully towards the crossing and will have reached it before I will.
      As a pedestrian who is wanting to cross, I look over my shoulder as I am walking along the road just before I turn to cross. This sends a signal "this pedestrian is checking for traffic and is about to cross - I need to slow down and stop unless I will be beyond the crossing by the time the pedestrian reaches it".

    While not excusing the fact that the cars failed to stop at zebra crossings, do you believe that cyclists should also stop at zebra crossings which have people crossing them? Because I see that a lot - and there is no way to report them to the police for "notice of intending prosecution". *All* vehicles (cars, buses, lorries, cyclists) must stop at red traffic lights and occupied zebra crossings.
    I've witnessed two occasions when cyclists have ridden at full speed into zebra crossings, making pedestrians scatter left and right.

    • @Pedal_Perspective
      @Pedal_Perspective  11 месяцев назад +2

      Yes of course cyclists should also stop.

    • @bestbehave
      @bestbehave Месяц назад

      Yes cyclists must stop in teh same way.
      What's your point? I think you are trying to excuse forcing a ton of steel through groups of people at speed.
      If you see someone mugging do you try to deflect the conversation onto burglars?

    • @Mortimer50145
      @Mortimer50145 Месяц назад

      @@bestbehave No. I'm not in any way trying to excuse a car/lorry/bus driver driving into people on a zebra crossing. All I'm saying is that their registration number means that they can be reported to the police if eye-witnesses see them and they don't stop.
      A cyclist who fails to stop is less likely to be traced. OK, they do *less* damage if they hit someone but not zero damage - there have been cases in the news of cyclists who have killed someone by knocking them over so they land badly.
      Once as a pedestrian, once as another cyclist, I've seen cyclists ride at zebra crossings with people on, and they didn't even appear to *try* to stop. In one case, the cyclist swerved around a woman who was pushing a pram, skidded across the road, narrowly avoided going under an oncoming bus, and then got up and started ranting at the woman, looking as if he was about to attack her for "daring" to be on a zebra crossing. My mate, who was built like a brick outhouse, restrained the guy and we both made statements to the police, Hopefully the police threw the book at him.
      In the second case, I was approaching a crossing on my bike, and I saw a long line of pedestrians, probably part of a walking tour (it was in the centre of Oxford). I slowed down to stop, and heard someone behind me yell "Out of my f-ing way!", and a cyclist came storming past me, pedalling rather than braking, causing the tourists to scatter. I tried to give chase, but he was too fast for me. I was very disappointed (and I said so fairly forcefully!) that when I happened to see a beat copper a few moments later, he didn't seem at all interested in pursuing it, even though I could give a description. His attitude was "these things happen". My view is that no-one should be above the law.
      Strangely, I've never witnessed a motor vehicle ride *at* people on a zebra. I've occasionally seen them drive over a crossing when someone has started to cross, but not actually in such a way that they would have hit the person, just made them take a step backwards. Still illegal, still needs to be punished.
      So I'm not excusing motorists. All I'm saying is that sometimes cyclists do things that motorists do. The consequences of a collision are less severe, but the chances of them being reported to the police via an indentifiable number plate, are a lot less.
