Setting up a Dust Free Rat Enclosure for the Summer

- Whenever I buy hay from a pet store that states it’s dust free - it never is. So I’m sharing what I do to extract the dust from the hay I use and set up a summer enclosure for my rats as it’s beginning to get very hot here in Australia. #rat

Прекрасно, что вы так внимательны к вашим малышам и так заботитесь о них 😊...
hi iam also in australia and im looking in too getting rats! I love your cage and would like to know where you got it from?
Hey! I got this one from Budtrol in Sydney - www.budtrol.com/product-category/pet-supplies/rats/ 🙂
hi i absolutely love your cage and i am wondering where you got it from?
Hey! I got it from a little independent store in Sydney called Budtrol. The critter nation is a similar option 😊
what a lovely enclosure! it makes me miss my childhood rats. i can't have rats anymore because i am very allergic to them (unfair!) but if i could, this set up would be very inspiring!
Oh so sorry to hear about your allergy! I have that with cats (mostly long haired) so I know how frustrating it is. Thank you so much for such a lovely comment, I’m always looking for new ways to enrich their little lives.
Thank you, great advice 👍
You’re welcome ☺️
While you clearly care about your rats, I have a few suggestions.
Hay in of it's own is terrible at locming away ammonia. Rats are sensitive and excessive ammonia can cause respiratory infections. I'd recommended switching to hemp or kiln dired, dust extracted pine bedding. Youbcan always add hay mixed in for nesting material/give structure to their borrows.
Rats need at least 10 cm of bedding so I'd recommend investing in a Perpex base. Digging provides opportunities for rats to cater to their natural instincts and are vital to their well-being.
The T-shirt is a lovely idea though I recommend checking daily for holes or loose threads as they could get strangled if the fabric comes undone. If damaged throw it out.
Thank you for your cooling methods and striving for thriving. Will check out more of your videos, it's nice to see a fellow Aussie rat fancier!
My tray base is more than 10cm so no Perspex needed. I personally prefer deep dig boxes for rats anyway. I never use the same bedding week to week due to enrichment opportunities. Hay is absolutely fine as long as frequently changed in much the same way as mice need. Ammonia build up happens due to infrequent changing of bedding - especially in fabric. And given that rats often wee in their actual beds (unlike mice) this is tended to daily. Whilst you are correct that some beddings have more absorbency than others, different textures are also important. Every bedding has its pros and cons to be honest. And pine shavings have also been linked to respiratory problems - coarse grade coco coir is a safer option and has brilliant absorption.
Love the video ❤️🐀❤️
Not sure if you have access to it, but oat hay is very soft and much less dusty. It also smells amazing and all of mice and rats absolutely love it! I do buy it by the bale, so it might be hard to find in smaller amounts and it may not be as good if it’s older. Might be worth looking at though :).
@ear0722 Ooo is it the same as Oaten hay? Have you had any issues with mites in it? I’ve since stopped using hay altogether due to mites in bags of shop bought hay! Hemp bedding and coco coir have been the winners so far.
@@MiceAndRatEnrichment You can bake hay to get rid of mites or quarantine the bedding by not using it for 3 weeks (the life cycle of the mite).
