How do I do the continuity test what do I touch the little meter things to?

I replaced the alternator, I replaced the battery, The fuses are ok and I recently cleaned the body throttle
One day, I was stuck in a traffic, very slow motion, my AC was running, and all of a sudden, all the lights came on the dash, then the lights went dark and the car stopped !!
I got a battery boost and went home with the AC turned off...
It doesn't happen when I have the heater on, only when the AC is on.
Please give me ideas where to start troubleshooting :(

Maybe check and possibly upgrade your ground wires?
