- In my first episode of Urban Eats TV I visited Lefty's Fried Rice in St. Louis, MO. A Black Owned Chinese Food Restaurant located at 3000 South Jefferson Ave on the Southside of St. Louis. Owners are a husband and wife team Lefty and Chan.
Can a Black Couple compete with a market dominated by Chinese?
Well let me the first to tell you YES YES YES!!! They are more than competing in the market, they are dominating it. Lets just say a healthier choice to the normally greasy Chinese Food we normally get.
I started off with a St. Louis Classic Shrimp St. Paul, let me tell you its bigger than what you would normally get and the flavors in Lefty's St. Paul will hit every hit all the points on the score board. The taste is perfect the texture perfect. It seems that it was shrimp throughout this St. Louis Classic.

I'm from Chicago, but I'll definitely vouch that the St. Louis area (including Southwest Illinois - Granite City, East St. Louis, and Cahokia) has the best Chinese food ever. Their worst restaurant is better than 95% of the ones in Chicago.

One of the best things I had in St Louis when I lived there was a St Paul sandwich. So simple, but so good.
As as born n raised St Louis native I can vouch for a lot of great Chinese food here. Lefty's Big Boys Burgers and the low mein King are all black owned and operated and simply amazing...❤️💪🏾💯

NO LIES TOLD!!! LEFTY’S IS THE BEST THAT I’VE HAD!! I appreciate how clean the restaurant is and how professional they are. They did not disappoint!!! Their crab rangoon is DELICIOUS with the sweet and sour sauce 😋

It's good. No Peas no Carrots! Favorite place though is Chung Wah on Olive in U City. My big ass always gets a Full Order of Duck Fried Rice, Crab Rangoons, a Duck Leg and a Shrimp Saint Paul.
I’m from St. Louis and I grew up on all the good Chinese restaurants. Right now the best St. Paul sandwich 🥪 I have ever tasted in my life is at, “The Rice House” in Florissant. They have Asian fusion food. It is excellent! I don’t like the gravy in my rice, I love the Duck Juice in my rice. Super fire 🔥.

I’ve been here in St.Louis for 18 + yrs and I’ve never heard of this place def gonna have to try them out, cause to me the best Chinese in STL is Northland in Ferguson hands down! From the rice to the fish plates you will not be disappointed!

My mother is a Foundational American and she cooked any type of food like a CHAMP. I have to come out there to visit your city and try your food. Looks so Good!

I've been in St. Louis all my life and I've never heard of this place! Thank you so much for sharing this. I stopped eating from Chinese restaurant years ago ,but I try this out being it's black owned.

Looks amazing! We have a black owned Chinese joint called Soul Foo Young here in Las Vegas. They have the best fried rice around.
Wow I’m from St Louis and I want to move to Vegas so I can’t wait to rate the rice. I have tried Chinese food in many different cities and so go nobody has beat St. Louis Chinese food. I even tried it in New York China town and it wasn’t good.

I am also from St Louis, born and raised. Graduated from Sumner High School. I currently reside in Phoenix, AZ and have lived here for 20 years. There is no where in the entire state the even knows what a St Paul sandwich is. I'm barely finding restaurants that even make egg foo young out here. They don't have sweet'n sour packets nor red pepper packets. It's a sad state of affairs. That sandwich has to be a St Louis thing. Every time I visit home Chinese food is a must have from Chong Wah on Lindell. And a shrimp st Paul sandwich is what I always order. Next time I'm home definitely gonna find Lefty's and try them out.
I've never had a st Paul but I love egg foo Yung . I've seen it on menus,I just haven't ordered it. I'll have to come by and try the food and try the St Paul. Thank you for promoting this restaurant. I'm really looking forward to trying their food.

I live in So California. And you would think with all these various Asians living here. You would have no problem finding a good restaurant. But I am in San Diego, CA. Give me the name of this place you commenting about. And I will take a trip that way. Trust. And I will be the judge of that. St. Louis use to have the best regional Chinese food. But a lot of these elders died off. Are just too old at this point. The younger generation is dropping the ball.😮

I been going to leftys since the open in August 2019 i had no other Chinese food since then when i go there i know im not getting no MSG or mystery meat

There used to be a city/county (maybe black/white neighborhood) divide. The city had savory crab rangoon and the country had sweet ones. But it seems more and more places have the sweet crab rangoon. What kind does Lefty's have? City places also had darker fried rice and it is so much better that way.
It's about time that I've heard about this. Our people can cook that type of food better than anyone.

Born and raised in The Lou and I cannot find chinese food anywhere that's better than what you can get in St Louis. My go to place was a joint in U City called Chong Wah's. Took the family on a trip back to my hometown about 20 years ago and tried to find the restaurant. It's no longer there. Going to have to try Leftys next time I'm in town. That St Pauls looked really good.
I definitely will be stopping by to try this entrepreneur Chinese food.

I was in St. Louis in August for a week long large convention. I wish I would have known about this place. But my friend from college from East St. Louis, IL went to a Chinese restaurant with me and some other friends while we were in South Carolina. She ordered fried rice and asked for gravy on her rice... We were looking her all crazy and even the restaurant staff too. But she told us what it was and how good it was. I never tried it. I'll stick to my Soy sauce. 😋☺️🤓🍚
