Flying Asiana’s last 747 (in First Class)

  • In this video I track down one of the last passenger 747-400s in the world, and the only one left in Asiana’s fleet, for a quick adventure flying from Osaka Kansai (KIX) to Seoul Incheon (ICN). And I’m in the nose, seat 3A.
Join me as we take off into the sunset, get served a full meal and a few drinks, bounce around in some turbulence and then make a nighttime approach and landing into Incheon. Listen out for those classic 747 sounds - the distinctive APU, the special chime.
Asiana sells these old First Class seats as business class these days so if you book a business ticket you can grab one free of charge.
And of course I’ll give you the newly inaugurated “GabeScore”. Although they basically had me won over as soon as they put a 747 on this route - anything else was just bonus.
How I booked this: a simple paid one-way ticket for the grand total of $251.48.
And this helped me pick up another discounted one-way business ticket on Emirates from Seoul to Stockholm via Dubai. (Seoul is a great place to originate for cheaper business class tickets, in case you didn’t know.) Those reports coming soon!

(I say this as a compliment) Your eyes light up when you first spot the 747, just like my niece's eyes when she sees her presents for the first time under the Christmas tree. Thanks for taking on this journey with you! I really enjoyed the video.

My most recent 747 flight was on Lufthansa's -8 earlier this year JNB to FRA. My very first one was Pan Am's -100 or -200 in the mid-eighties FRA to JFK and back. In between a couple of -400 flights with SQ, CA, TG, KL. Among them even a domestic flight HKT to BKK. I had the impression that getting all passengers in and out took longer than the flight itself. In 1994 KLM had Economy class seats at the very front too. I was at a similar position as you but with a fraction of the space... Nevertheless I agree that it is an iconic plane!

Wow that’s a lot of great 747 experiences. I loved those Thai domestic flights on the jumbo. And I fondly recall when JAL had economy on the upper deck. Flew that as a kid once or twice.

Nice video. Huge like. I dont have the palmarès of Sam Chui but i m quite lucky to be born at the right era. I flew for the first time with B747-100 of Air France in 1978...then B747-100 of Sabena. From 1980 to 1987, i flew every year with B747-200 of Air France ...then B747-400 of Air France in 1993. In 2010, i flew with B747-400 of Cathay, in 2013 with EVA Air (the combi variant), in 2014 with Saudia, then in 2015 and 2016 again with EVA Air but full Pax variant. And last summer i experienced the B747-8i of Korean Air. I made some videos too. I saw the 744 of Asiana many times when going to Manila but i never ride on it yet..

I personally saw the Boeing 747 from my own eyes 3 times and OMG it is a really big aircraft and i am still love the 747. Now you maybe ask : How many Boeing 747s are still flying in 2023 ? An analysis data as of July 2023 reveal at least a total of 460 Boeing 747s are still flying around the world. Important fact : Asiana Airlines will retired it's last passenger Boeing 747-400 by the end of 2024. Let us hope Asiana can make it to that target.

That number of active 747s varies quite a bit depending on which analysis you look at, which is interesting! The vast majority of those are cargo planes. Freight is a mission for which the 747 still remains very well suited, so I think we'll so those flying for many years yet.

Ahhh so worth it for the Queen experience! Brings back memories of my last 747 experiences on Qantas trans Indian ocean 15 hours SYD JNB, also in a similarly configured old first class seat sold as business....magic! Thanks @GabrielLeigh!

Wonderful trip report, thank you for sharing. I'm gutted Asiana won't be flying the 747 to KIX from January next year. They seem to have deployed it on the Narita and Sapporo routes for Jan and Feb. I have a flight booked on Korean Air from ICN-KIX in February and was hoping they might still continue flying the 747 into KIX on the date I need to fly. I can't even book those other routes as my date of travel is not flexible. Thanks again for the quality trip report. I turned the volume on full for takeoff. Just awesome!

Thank you! Ah that is unlucky about them sending the 747 elsewhere in Japan. They seem to do that, rotating it around. I'm not sure why - it's like they're doing a little farewell regional tour with it in its final years/months.

Great report Gabe. It has been awhile since I've been on a 747. I keep ending up on Lufthansa's A330's. This inspires me to go find one of those routes and make it happen. Safe travels

The B747-400 used to fly to New York City on Asiana 222/221 and Korean Air 81/82 day time 2009-2011 Night flight 85/86 from ICN. The only B747-400s I flew on are PR and CX. From what I can see you have access to both Korean dramas and pop music on Asiana Star Alliance and also Skyteam Alliance Korean Air. NYC to South Korea is on Jumbo jet Korean Air but A350-900 Asiana.

I thought Korean Air still operates at least 1 as well? That would be another cool one to film. I was lucky enough to catch both Korean's and Delta's remaining 747s multiple times back in 2013 and 2017.

Korean flies the -8I but no longer has any -400s. The -8 is fun too but not quite as classic and cool as the older variants if you ask me.
