My Company Dependable Concrete was hired to restore this porch and save the customer thousands of dollars by resurfacing the porch.
and in this short video I will demonstrate to you step by step how I completed this job.
Go take a look!
As displayed in the video, this unsightly porch is stained and pitting,
View video of resurface concrete work and let me show you how I saved this customer thousands of dollars by resurfacing her porch instead of excavating and replacing it with new concrete
In this video I shared the materials used to complete his project.
The most important step to resurfacing concrete is prepping the job. My goal is to make this porch look like new and to extend the life of this resurfacing job.
Removing all loose material is critical at allowing the resurfacing material to adhere
to the surface. A strong bond between the surface and the material is crucial at prolonging the life of this job.
Before applying the resurfacing material, I like to apply an concrete bonding adhesive to guarantee and strong bond between the surface and the resurfacing material.
I use a rough napped roller to roll on the adhesive to allow an evenly applied coat
I apply this glue at full strength. Remember what I said earlier, my goal is to extend the life of this resurface job. A premature peeling of this new surface is a failed job. So its important to follow all the right steps and to not take short cuts. Short cuts like adding water to the glue or not removing flaking concrete.
Its important to fill all the deep pocketed areas first. If not filled, the pockets will show on the final coat. Again, my goal is to make this pad look like a fully replaced concrete job but at a fraction of the cost of total replacement.
Pitted and pocketed areas is a dead give away that this job was resurfaced. And besides it do not look professional.
You can pre-purchase a resurfacing mix but I like to design my own mixes. It gives me the flexibility to make adjustments to the conditions of a particular job.
I apply a rich tacky mix 1st and its 1 part play sand to 1 part Portland cement to 1 part glue. All of these products can be purchased from Lowes www.lowes.com/ or Home Depot www.homedepot.com/
Ok listen closely this is very important; the thicker the material is applied the higher the chance it will crack. For best results, no more than a 16th of an inch of resurfacing material should be applied. Therefore the mix should have a high slump and flow freely.
After watching the video, click the yellow mixer and subscribe so I can demonstrate to you how to resurface other concrete surfaces like steps, patios basement floors and walls. I will teach you the technique so that you can either make thousands or save thousands.
The riser must not be rushed and overlooked as unimportant, its what everyone see first, therefore, to give it that new concrete look it must have evenly appied glue and cement finish. It must look flat, not lumpy!
On day 2 the first coat has dried and now and we apply the final coat. The cement mix ratio has been adjusted, we are now using 2 parts play sand to 1 part Portland cement and ½ part glue.
This mix design is less tacky because of it has less of the acrylic glue and Portland cement however it has a more cementitious texture and color which is more fitting for a final coat.
Its important to be generous with applying the glue. And on the surface, the glue should always be ahead of the cement. Never allow the glue to completely dry If so then the glue will not work. Ideally the glue should dry to a tacky touch.
An even stroked broom finish is important for texture and traction it also helps to mirror the look of new concrete.
The clear sealer prevents dirt and grime from penetrating into the surface. It also repels liquids such as oil or salt water.
A clear coat sealer is the final step. It acts as a protective shield for the finish. It reinforces the durability of the top surfacing.
You did an excellent job on that porch. I work as a handyman, and am glad to have a reference, as I am going to be doing a resurfacing job soon. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the compliment
Excellent Video as always they keep getting better and better. Thanks for sharing the products used and how to use them correctly!
This is a great video thx. The house I'm buying was a 'renovation' but they missed some of the nice finishes like this !!
Great job and im grateful for this video as I was fretting the cost of getting my steps porch updated.
Thanks
I was taught to use 2 sand 1 cement years ago, also with the same exact glue ..simple yet effective.
Yes this ratio always works but it's most important to prep the surface
great footage. I'm doing my drive way after putting ice melt on it and messing it up, GOSH!! wont do that again. anyway, this video was good to look at and a good guide to doing my own driveway.
Anthony Perkins thanks for the compliment
Great video and explanation of steps to Complete the job!
Thanks Mr Chase, I appreciate your comment!!
This looks fabulous. I am researching how or who to do exactly this. I NEED HELP!
Thinking of doing this for my small concrete deck, looks fairly straight forward.
Miss Washington is so very happy still after two years!
Loved it. Great editing and drone footage. 👍🏾☺️
Thank you Maya Garrett!
thanks
So you just clean the surface by elbow grease and a broom, when would you if ever, acid etch the concrete? I agree with the bonding agent 100% everytime but i thought that the sodium whatnot that all concrete releases over time, would stilbe present causing even the epoxy to come up.. right?? Is just the general instruction i seem to get is to acid etch the surface as apart of the preperation...
Thank you. Very informative and detailed
Thanks D.
Great video, thanks! What is the minimum wait time before doing the second coat?
1 day
at any point do you add glue into the mix or by mix you mean the application of glue then the respective amount of a 1:3 parts play sand, Portland cement after the respective ratio of glue is applied to the surface? is the bonding adhesive also the glue ?
Yes i forgot to mention that you can also add glue (acrylic) into mix. I use a 1 cup of glue to 1 gallon of the 1:3 mix. Tim this will certainly reinforce the mix!
@@DependableConcrete Ok now i am confused. Isnt the adhesive the glue? So 1 cup sand, 1 cup portand and 1 cup adhesive for first mix. then 1 cup sand, 1 cup portland and 1/4 cup adhesive. As an example
Where is the list of products?
I guess you must consider your listeners to be somewhat Adept at concrete work but I know for a fact in learning some tricks that when applying the broom finish time is of the essence and that if you rush to put your finished with your broom you will come up with a nasty looking job I'm wondering is it similar to regular concrete work in that waiting for that right moment to pull the broom is important or do you just appliers ingredients and just pull the broom I'm sure you must have to wait a little bit but I'd like to hear your answer.
What is a good mixture and pour depth if someone wanted to stamp pattern the resurfaced concrete?
Hey... good video.. I just laid a shower bed and it came out a little bit sandy on the top layer.. but, it still feels pretty strong over all.. is there anything I can do to ensure the strength & make sure the water membrane I need to lay next sticks to it.!??
Great video. Wish you lived in NZ - got a pad that needs a fresh look like the pad in the video
Looks great. I have a 20x10 back patio with a tiny crack in it..... You only notice the settling when it rains because the crack area puddles... got any advice on how to quick fix that?
Use self-leveling cement
I'm in Chicago I wish u were here
Great work
Fine video. Only Feedback for me is that I found it difficult to hear some of your words ( at two minutes for instance) perhaps a slightly slower narration. Couldn't make out the all Important mixes and if any water was used at all? Also as this is just a porch. If the damp course allowed for it, could you also frame it up and just add a brand new layer of small aggregate concrete mix of say 25mm to refresh it? With expansion joints, would it be an option and perhaps a better finish? Many thanks
Thanks for the feedback. Yes adding concrete with small aggregate also makes for a good resurfacing alternative
Good day. Thanks for the clear instructions. I’d like to find out. My step (not quite porch ) is painted red but I want to resurface it as it is cracked and chipped. Do I have to do any special preparation before I resurface it?
Natalie Visser yes make sure it’s dust and loose material free.
Natalie Visser I would also recommend using a thinset for tiling on a painted surface, scratch it then wait overnight then apply a resurfacing cement which has a fine aggregate.
This looks so awesome!
Thanks
How much would it cost to do this on one step that's about 30 SQ ft long?
I love seeing a true craftsman at work. Very nice job.
Thank you very much
Great Video.
Can you refer someone in NJ?
Awesome video man!
Thanks for the visit
My front porch is very similar in size and damage to this porch. What would be a good professional estimate on cost for this job?
1k -1500. client will still save $2k
Over 20 plus years here in concrete from Fl to Oh Comm And Res. Material plenty pictures and ref. I could do it for around 850 with material included thx
Looks great should the concrete be wet before you apply the glue or do the glue take care of that to make it stick also I’m planning on done no this around my pool deck and staying and sealing is this method basically the same as and overlay thank you for your help also I’m in the Dallas area we very rarely get cold enough to freeze or ice so I think this would last a very long time
Joshua Lymer in his last video a little water helps you flick it on with a brush after cleaning it with a broom. for dirty flaky and chipping concrete..it's best to powerwash it and let it dry for awhile then add the glue
Do not wet the concrete. The water prohibit the glue from working as well. Only wet if the surface temperature is very high and requires cooling.
Great video!!
Thanks
Nice work!
thanks
Is the reason that you use play sand instead of regular builder's sand because play sand is finer?
Must be, because another video said fine sand.
Good job!
I love your before and after vedio. How can I contact you for a job opportunity I would really appreciate someone as skilled like yourself to complete a cement project at my home.😊
Sorry for the late response I am so busy in the summer. I do most of my responding to videos and create content in the winter months. visit my website www.dependableconcrete.com
If you live in the Philadelphia area then book an appointment.
Nice work
Thanks
Probably a good short term fix, I'd like to see it in a couple years and see how it looks. Based on the caulking on the brick it looks like the slab has settled a few inches which will cause it to continue cracking. Anyway, thanks for the video, t's always to see shelf products in action.
Only issue with this job was pitting and staining on the riser. I do revisit my jobs and its the clear sealer that extends the repair work into several years. Fortunately, she had no settlement; not even a 1/16th of an inch.
How did this hold up after 1 winter?
Client is still very pleased
Love this
I have a front porch that had been covered with slab. The slab and concrete cracked, so I removed all the slab to reveal a very bumpy and pitted surface where the slab once was. Could I use this technique? Or should I resurface due to the depth of pitting?
Yes you can. However I would recommend pouring a very very wet self leveling cement first as you base. Pour enough of the material just to get over the pitting then proceed with the steps in the video.
Dependable Concrete Contractor would a self leveling cement need a material to adhere to first? To prevent cracking?
Yes I would definitely add concrete bonding glue first.
Dependable Concrete Contractor I wish I could send you a pic, lol, it’s very bumpy
@@estellecavanagh8131 send pix to my dependablecw@gmail.com
Can I resurface a porch that is not level porch has sunken forward? Thanks
Stu Pidassho yes but 1st you will have to skim coat the lower side until desired level i do concrete but I’m in se Ohio
stringline2 thanks I will look into.
I had a guy come by and put a clear coat over my new cement. It left like paint streaks. He said the streaks would come off during wear and tear if the cement.. I don’t buy it. Is that normal ?
not sure of this situation. I never heard of it, but i am also not sure of the product used.
Can you do a basement floor please
who's Albert aretz yes a basement floor could be done and even add a slight pitch towards a drain or sub pump
Wish I could have hired you.
i've noted the view date Jul 26, 2017. Are you for hire today?
Sorry for the delayed response yes I am available but only in the Philadelphia area
Unfortunately Mrs. Washington's check bounced
😂
Morrreeeeeee......👍👌subbed
Too many details left out
I bet Miss Washington realized this was a bad idea about 3 months later.
Sorry to say, it looks better but not new.
👍🏽
Do you have a direct email for a question

Could you check your emil
I came again :-|
I really liked your video We are going to try to resurface a porch,it's in bad shape... could send you a picture and you can give me some recommendations
Thanks for the video. Would you do the same process for a driveway?
Mixing the portland, sand and glue, are you using any water withe the mixture on either day one or two?
He did not answer you but yeah you do
It looks gray compared to normal concrete. Did you color the resurfaced concrete?
Portland cement has a gray color to it once cured, if you want a lighter color I suggest masonry cement. It’s 67% Portland cement with 33% lime in it so it cures a much whiter finish
Great information! Is the "glue" in the mix the same thing used to bond the concrete in the first step? In the 1:1:1 or 2:1:1/2 mix do you still add water or the "glue" completely replaced water?
Always use 100% glue do not dilute the glue in the mix you can also add 20% glue 80% water
If done on a driveway, will this hold up to many freeze,/ thaw cycles of Chicago weather, how many years?
great job brother ... keep up good work
salute
Thanks, will do!
Great job, how much it cost?
What are those discolored spots on the center square/slab?
..and dont just say it will go away while it dries more - this vid shows after its dry, but moreover, it shows after Seealer is applied and dried.
So the reason i ask is because i had some similar spotting on one of my recent resurfaces.
My spots are smaller but theres a few more of them.
Wonderful! I really appreciate your contribution to the diy'er like me.
Iyo, is this something a total newbie could reasonably accomplish and be satisfied with??
The driveway is bad in our new home but replacing isnt in the budget at the moment.
The chipping is horrible and bothers me the most. And there are cracks but dont mind frequent maintenance or would even consider just living with them if the cost is low.
Or would I just flushing money to even attempt?
Lastly..driveway is 20' x 80' and what would one expect to pay for a professional job?
hi when you say1 to1 to 1for exple how do you judge the amount of glue? thanks
1 cup of glue to 1 gallon of mix
@@DependableConcrete 1 cup glue + 1gallon Play Sand + 1 gallon Portland cement is the first mix? Or is it 1 cup glue, 1/2 gal Play Sand, 1/2 gal portland cement?
Id say if you dont understand ratios this job is too hard for you
Great job--I am a bricklayer and I see lots of stuff. Great job.
Thanks Joe I know it's been a long time
Thanks Dependable Contractor. That looks great. I gotta ask because I'm just not understanding the ratios. When you say 1 to 1 to 1 are you saying to mix a gallon of sand to a gallon of portland cement to a gallon of glue? Or are you saying a gallon of sand to a gallon of cement to a cup of glue? And then would the final mix be 2 gallons of sand to 1 gallon of cement to a 1/2 gallon of glue, or a 1/2 cup of glue?
I have same question. Did you get an answer 714dawger? Thank you.
@@richardlabbe he said it is cup for the glue. but I still don't know how much water into the mix.
How much per square foot do you charge to refinish.?
Fantastic
Thanks
You say 'glue' what exactly is it?
How much did you charge to do this?
Nice job, which product did you use to seal the joint between the concrete slap and the building, is there a waterproof product for this? tks
The glue will seep into the fine cracks and waterproof before the overlay is applied.
Rick Deckard a 2 part concrete appoxy should be used or a waterproof flexible caulk
My slab has some sloping problems and some slightly depressed areas that need to be evened out. What is the best product to use and should I use a large squeegee or trowel.
watch my playlist on resurfacing
How long does this last? Can you recommend someone here in Orange County? We hired someone here and did a horrible job. …
Sorry to hear about your experience I do not know anyone in that area
hello.. Does it work for uneven slabs on do you have to demo an replace
an overlay works for uneven slabs also
question I installed a new patio of concrete and now it has sand streaks what can I do to fix it?? I have swept it off but it is still kind of sandy help!!
Make a cement stain by using type 1 Portland cement and lot of water. Make consistency wet. Dampen surface then apply stain with a sponge. This should help to adjust color. Redo a day later.
apply this overlay method. make sure to use the correct proportions of materials as described. Use 1 cup of glue to 1 gallon of 1:3 mix. Fortunately the sand will help with gripping the overlay.
Sounds to me like i would be calling the concrete plant that brought it apparently they didn’t use a 6 bag mix they went cheap on ya and used more sand than Portland cement!!! We had a concrete plant around here started getting sandy finish so people went else where LoL they fixed ther problem now there getting more business pretty good crete now even with slick finish,,4 yard minimum here around $380 tax tag and title and delivery LoL 😂
Excellent work-do you know anyone in SFlorida area that can do the same?
Sorry I do not.
great job ! what do you do when owners ask you to fix cracks in stoop ?
letsjam2 usually caulking
Can you please share what exact measurements you use of each material in the mix? Couldn’t find it in the comments and I’m trying to do this project today! Thanks for your time and this video. Very helpful!
I tried to lay out 7 concrete pavers but they came out rough and some with slight dips. How do you recommend to resurface them and get them level?
Could you a video for peoples starting of in this work , on things to look out for and tips and tricks ,thanks videos are great
Good job. Looks great.
Nice work!
Thanks Crystal
Is it better to use trowels to spread the resurfacer or a long handled squeegee?
How much did you spend on all supplies
about $250
Very good and easy to follow video
Glad you liked it
what ratio of water do you use. I have never worked with concrete, yet your video makes it look doable. Thank you. I have a 200 sq ft porch that I would like to re-surface. How much of each product should I purchase? thank you in advance.
One 94 pound pack of Portland cement and a gallon of bonding adhesive will do it just fine. I just did an entire 100 square foot sidewalk with 35 pounds so you’ll have room to spare
Great job. Very well done.
Thanks Christa
This will crack in 6 months
Not true not true
What did that cost her?
Approximately between 1200 and 1500$
I’ve been finishing concrete for 24 plus year recently just moved back to s.e.Ohio anyone lookn for a concrete finisher plez reply, thank you, dependable, reference, and pictures of past jobs..
stringliline2 I’m looking for someone to finish my concrete patio. Plz get in touch.
Salman Nazir Akhund I can do it for you but where are you located?
I have cement step walkout from the basement with concrete or cinder block walls which are cracking and leaking water. Will Jewel stone make the walls stronger and the steps more durable as well? The alternative is to dig it all up and rebuild from scratch.
George Coleman hydrolic cement should do the trick Clean areas very well then put paint bonding agent on then thich trowel hydrolic cement on the sponge it damp in light circle motion
Wow great vid. I was thinking about replacing the backyard patio area concrete because it has a long crack but will resurface to save money! What’s is your thought about using New Crete by Rapid set for resurfacing concrete?
I never used a product before just make sure you use plenty of glue first
what kind of broom did you use on the concrete after applying it? is the concrete still wet when you did that?
Cement must be slightly wet so that you can get the grooves for traction
I'd like materials list - looks great! If a crack from leak repair - what do you recommend to fill a crack first before this application to even it?
Rachel Green when i have that type of job first grinde the crack debris and shopvac good then caulk with 2 part cement approxy then start on rest
Professionnel job 👍
Thanks Ben
Hi / when you say your mix of Portland cement sand and glue - what type of glue do you use ?

Looks pretty good...could the same process be used for resurfacing a heavily spalled garage floor?
Yes, absolutely
Great video ! Have you ever put colored pigment in the top coat ?? Thanks, Bret
Not yet!
Great video. Do you need to put a slight grade so water runs away from the house?
Yes you do
