The Low GSP Experience In Smash Ultimate

- I decided to drop down to as low GSP as possible in online play in Smash Ultimate, with my best character Diddy Kong in competitive play and then climb up. This experience was quite the journey!

Who here likes to play Valorant, by the way? It recently became my favorite game on the side.
Correction: When I mean "zero gsp" I meant like minimum possible, which I actually think is "1" - nonetheless same applies! Let me know if this more gameplay focused video was interesting. I don't know why this account got HARD STUCK now lol.

Hey Zero, we would really like a series of "Road to the 2021 Elite Smash"
Would love to see a part 2 zero
Also would love to see you play Val its one of my favourite games
Zero's active commentary on neutral, habits, and conditioning and his practical application of his own advice puts him at a cut above other popular Smash content creators. I myself quit playing Ultimate for at least a year and still find myself intrigued and informed by his commentary. Keep it up, man.
His commentary is the reason I bought smash as the first game I bought on switch
He would make a really good commentator
I second this. I quit a while too but keep coming back for more ZeRo
Good comment
Thought I'd do everyone a favor and catalog all the tips, they seem pretty useful to learn that might help lower rated players catch their mistakes, especially for aspiring Diddy Kong Mains, I organized them all by Victories:
W1-W2: Don't throw moves out randomly and without purpose.
W3: Don't give up!
W4: Don't slack on defense!
W5: Don't panic mash! Keep yer cool!
W6: Remember your spacing for recovery options, when to use them at the right time.
W7: Play careful when close to kill percentage.
Also W7: Practice with items occasionally, so you are able to use opponent skills like bananas to your advantage.
W8: (Specifically advice for Diddy Kong Mains, 10:49-11:12)
W9: Don't play Smash with default wifi, play with a hardline for better internet connection so you don't lag. (Also Nintendo fix your net code!)
W10-W11: There is good mashing (i.e. W10 for recovery, Mash options that have a High chance of you hitting the opponent like a fast move or move with a lot of range) and bad mashing (i.e. W4 or W11 bad mashing, panic mashing)
W12: *for diddy kong mains, Forward Smash is a guaranteed kill, less of a chance for opponent popping out. ;)
W13: Always remember to use good options for combos. Also, more Diddy Kong 15:01-15:16
W14-W15: Bait your opponent to make them mess up, Plan Ahead also, (i.e. Diddy Kong for setting up options 15:47-16:06 know your options, know your opponents options... As best you can ahem* There are like a zillion characters in this game, if you know you know, ya know? Like this random bit of knowledge in how Sonic works 16:07-16:34, facts like that you take note of from casually playing the game pay off in the long run, it can save your life! - I'd recommend not sweating about memorizing every single character, just maybe the ones you run into most or ones you got most trouble dealing with, if that's "Literally Everybody" just play more you'll pick it up eventually )
W16: Don't get overwhelmed! (Yes, it's different than giving up - the person was playing alright at the start made a couple mistakes not heeding our previous tips about options and spacing, brain just got fried by too much force)
W17: Don't get stuck on using one move over again, just because it's big damage doesn't mean it's best option and is exploitable by your opponent cuz it makes you predictable. :)
W18-W19: Wait for opponent to come to you, Wait and see what your opponent will do, then punish.
Also W19: Don't get greedy!
Also W19: It's a bad idea to go back into the level and do nothing. Always be moving and trying to do something to capitalize on opponents vulnerabilities.
W20: More Diddy Kong tips for a particular matchup and again don't spam moves.
W21: Learn to play carefully! Pick the area of the stage where you can neutralize the most threat from a character that you have the most trouble with to contain them in a certain gameplan. This can be keeping them on the edge and away from mid, like this match suggests. (Some characters like the mid, others like the edge it really depends)
W22: Diddy Mains take notes on how he thinks... That's all for now GGs You're now 2mil GSP
I love how, even when he is playing low GSP matches against people that are usually not that big of a threat, ZeRo is still able to give good advice regarding his opponents habits, mistakes made during the match and options they could've went for... I missed this a lot, it's a breath of fresh air to be able to watch him again
yeah, that’s one thing i love about him ^^
I have no idea what zero's talking about but his advice is so good.

@@Mjh3456 we heard u the first time, we just do not care
@@Mjh3456 Keep dreaming.
This man ZeRo so analytical it’s crazy how much he processes and analyzes the opponent so well. I see why he went on that insane 1st place run.
Bro Zero is low key genius did you hear how he practiced for Brawl he played the cpu and literally learned how to punish each potential option they threw out so he could be ready for tournaments
@@Buff_Drio Where was that discussed?
I love how he's not only demolishing his opponents in game but also verbally during the match itself.
At the same time, it’s all constructive calls to action on areas that need more attention, and I enjoy that a lot more than the sort of “OOOO-YOU SUCK-LET’S GOOO” sort of commentator.
@@beatfromjetsetradio8239 ZeRo is just a piece of art on his own
That's not really demolishing tho he's essentially giving advice to low level players
@@Dragonlord826 It sounded like advice but at the same time it sounded like he was dissing his opponents, which in fact I really enjoyed.
“The moment you give up, it’s over.” Nice statement about low level smasher mindset that even branches to upper levels. I’ve certainly lost to myself before the person and I’ve seen it so many times with certain friends.
It's more likely to happen for casual players. These players play for fun, not the win and self betterment, and they give up much easier if they're clearly outclassed. I think the challenge of overcoming is pretty fun oftentimes, but I can understand them thinking they're outclassed and not going to put enough time and effort into bettering themselves to the level they'd need to to overcome someone like ZeRo lol
Sometimes you are gonna need to find someone that can match your spirit of wanting to improve at the game because as a low level player myself my opponents most of the time are just throwing moves they think will hit
Anyone interested in the psychoanalytical aspect of gaming, I highly suggest Psych of Play and Core-A Gaming.
These channels go in depth on topics related to why we give up or make bad decisions while gaming. Core-A is a more practical fighting game related channel, while Psych of Play goes very deep into more personal life-related aspects of gaming. Both are very entertaining and insightful. I highly recommend them. I improved a lot after watching these channels.
I don’t agree with zero here.
He’s expecting, maybe a 11 year old kid to try learning this match up from one of the former greatest players of all time.
There’s nothing to learn when you’re just starting out and getting completely dominated by a professional.
Mostly because you don’t even know where you went wrong.
So what is there to learn?
Plus that 11 year old probably wanted to play for fun with people around their skill level. Not ZeRo.
Tbf I don't think we should look down on them because of that. Or even come to a conclusion that it is a "mindset". They might be just playing for fun and it is understanrable that they don't want to continue a match that's not fun. I mean come on now. Little timmy vs a pro smasher smurf lol.
I'm in elite smash but I also sometimes (though rarely) "give up" against players who I think are boring to play against. I guess I'm a tryhard casual as in I somewhat enjoy tryharding but I mostly play for fun & am not trying to become a god.
i think my favorite thing about this video is that you didn't trash talk the lower gsp players. You pointed out potential mistakes based on "what ifs" and I really appreciated. What a good option would be vs diddy / etc. and took the route of "this person appears to not have been aware of the best route to take advantage of x or y." So much better to hear commentary like this, please keep it up!

I enjoy the fact that ZeRo points out all the common mistakes that the low gsp players make, meanwhile Little Z pops off and brags about pummeling players worse than him 😂 (no disrespect. I love Zack.)
Little Z is mostly just trying to entertain, Zero is actively teaching.

My experience on low GSP territory was so funny because you either made a friend, or your opponent would have no clue how to play.
I love making random friends, just teabagging and doing stupid stuff for the fun of it
@@Lello_LeMon same. I usually friend them afterwards!
"If you quit you don't even have a chance to come back"
Bruh the chances of me taking a single stock from you or any other similarly skilled player are the same chances as winning the lottery
The way how I see it is when you notice the skill gap between you and your opponent is too great continuing the match really is just a waste of time. You both know what the outcome of the match will be and a comeback is only really possible if the Gap in skill isn't that far off and you're capable of seeing what you're doing wrong as well as are able to fix it mismatch. If you can't do that repeatedly fighting a battle where there's no chance of an upset just gets boring to watch and isn't fun to play.
Just be sure to take your L like a man before you walk away.
But if you don't play the lottery, you can never win the lottery
That’s the mindset of someone who won’t get far in the first place. If someone is vastly better than I am (doesn’t happen often) I analyze during the match. If you know your going to lose, you have already lost. That’s only true if you assume your going to lose. I always assume no matter who I play that I’m going to win. Even if they are better than me. Because all I have to do is learn, and adapt, and figure out holes in their gameplay. Like me, they are human, and make mistakes. Sometimes it’s just about who can exploit the others mistakes and adapt better. If you go in with a “oh he’s better so I’m gonna lose” mindset, might as well sell the game and switch and go do something else. Everyone has the ability to get better, and winning is only as impossible and you yourself make it. That’s true both literally and figuratively.
The problem is you're only thinking binary. Wins vs Losses. At the end of the day, yeah it's about that, but do you know how much of an impression you're gonna make when you take someone from 3 stocks 1?
I played plenty of matches (with friends and online) where I was basically about to be three-stocked then flipped the pancake taking 2 stocks on my one stock (and in some cases winning the game). Not only can you make an impression, you can possibly make your opponent choke as they may potentially get desperate to end the match.
NEVER give up until you hear the announcer announce the end of the match.
What you guys don't seem to understand is the vast chasm in skill that can exist between players. No one's saying that people can't get better and eventually win but within the span of a single match or even a few hours of playing with somebody? For some people closing that Gap just isn't possible in that time.
Think of it this way if you're challenged to a competitive match by a well built competitive mixed martial artist when you have very little experience and he isn't holding back. It doesn't matter how many times you fight him that day you're not winning. But of course if you go home and train for a few months learn a few fighting styles and workout your odds of beating him next time will definitely improve. But all that takes time and you can't make up for all of that over the course of a few hours in the ring with him your first time around. That fight is not winnable at your current skill level no matter how much you throw yourself at him that day.
The important thing is that you don't give up on trying to improve yourself if you really want to grow. whether it be in competitive fighting or a video game. Train with people just above your skill level so you can grow properly and improve gradually over time. There's nothing wrong with turning down a fight you know you have no chance in winning that's just knowing your own limits. there's a difference between knowing your limitations and flat-out giving up. Not everybody can start playing on the hardest difficulty some people have to start at a lower level before they can attempt the hardest difficulty.
I didn’t think it was possible to “not lose GSP” if you just lose a-lot lol.
Probably a moral change for people who actually aren't too great made somewhere randomly. He's clearly not gaining much per match so he's definitely below the number that is displayed. It's some sort of soft cap.
@@madMILL3R that makes sense tho
I think it might be from the huge numbers of people who tanked their own accounts & then left them there , gsp roughly ranks you in relation to everybody else , so in theory at some point when everyone below you has farmed thousands of deliberate losses over the lifespan of the game it won't be possible to go below them & hit 0
@@Marcusjnmc Yeah, basically it's cause there's millions of people tied at 0 I'd guess.
None of this is accurate
The reason his gsp can’t go lower is because his roster gap is too high
Definitely would love to see you continue this as a series. I'm thinking about getting into smash for the first time ever, and these kinds of videos with your commentary on the precise movements you and your opponents do and don't do right is very helpful.
Gotta play maaaan! Your missing out 😄
Btw ZeRo, if someone disconnects, lags out, or ragequits, no gsp will be gained or lost by either player. But if you disconnect, lag out, or ragequit, the next time you try to play quickplay the game will be like "Hey you disconnected in you last fight. We don't know if its connection problems, or some other problem, but don't disconnect again or we'll have to suspend you from online play for a while." It starts off with a 30 minute ban, but gets longer the more you disconnect.
For some reason I found my Sephiroth at 2 million GSP Despite never playing him I found the low GSP experience to be a bunch of sweaty Mario's trying to get clips
man watching you play is so comforting you always have something to say about every player you encounter.
ill wait for the next video getting to elite smash btw! keep it up my man
I like how Zero talks abt the opponent and says what they need to work on. very good man and opposite of toxic
I'd be super down to seeing a series of this and having ZeRo comment on how the players improve the further up you go.
I have been a fan of yours since your Brawl days. You are just a nice chill guy and came a long way in life. Mad respect, keep it up dude
I really enjoyed this. The "How players at this Gsp level" breakdown and everything you brought up made for a great watch.
Kinda funny how he’s asserting actual logic to the silly things that the people at low GSP’s do. As someone who got stuck there for a while, I know how that feels to not be gaining any GSP at all, but great job getting to 2 mill 🎉😂
(24:05 And by the way if the other person disconnects the GSP changes get cancelled, some people time it perfectly so they still play the whole match but if they lose nothing happens 😛)
Hey ZeRo, here's a bit of info: in online matches if either player disconnects mid match it becomes impossible to gain GSP from the match. That's why you didn't get gsp from that match near the end as well as near the middle of the video.
Nah you can still lose GSP if you are the one disconnecting... And you can get a 30 minute ban
@@Camera_Cru so you're one of those
@@Camera_Cru I don't think you do lose the GSP tbh - that's why most people do it. it's a big fuck you to players who are beating you fair.
Also it might start as a 30 minute ban or something, but it actually grows each time you disconnect afaik, up to several hours and more
@@alexv0714 No, you do lose GSP. I've seen it happen.
@@Shmityorshen wait that's actually stupid. if the game acknowledges that you lose (and thus lose points), the winner should also gain the points.
I'm not into watching other players play on Quickplay, but what made your's so entertaining was that I was actually able to learn something everytime. Can't believe that even agaisnt very new players, I'm able to learn something you have to say about them.
I'm all for introspective Smash content. You still got it.
Yeah, people make content like..."Can I get to Elite from 0 GSP?" Obviously, if you are good enough. I can do that myself with my main if I could get to 0 GSP with them. They vaguely explain things people do and how knowing how to fight against it is important.
I have applied airdodging against Sonic homing attack and it has already done more for me than most tips videos could on their own. It made me go back and watch sets of ZeRo to learn more. My skill jumped significantly in only one day.
It's possible to have a lower GSP. There is an anti-sandbagging thing in place. So you have to actually play very poorly if you want to keep dropping, you can't wake up some day and then tank your GSP.
Awesome! Yes I would love to see more of this. Myself I only recently reached Elite after my first thousand hours of practice so this is a lot of fun for me to see you covering all the tiers I just passed through.
Honestly I could see this series being invaluable for newer players to gain insight in how to play the game.
You talk a lot about interesting things and that's a real plus. Love watching your videos man, glad you came back
ZeRo filed a LawSuit against Jisu, yes.
smoking that Jisu pack L BOZO
Yes sirrrr
In my opinion, this is the best video you’ve ever made. Very informative to the different levels of play. More like this would be great.
This game has been out for 3 years and ZeRo still doesn’t realize that when your opponent quits, you don’t gain GSP
he left for like a year lol
I love the educational commentary. You're just spewing coaching information constantly and it's both helpful and entertaining.
Something I learned from Alpharad’s second channel: your GSP gains or losses are based on your win/loss ratio. If you played a ton of matches trying to get as low as you can, then you’ve basically nerfed your potential gains.
Also, you don’t gain any GSP whatsoever if they disconnect before the match is over. Might explain a few of your null results.
I need more of this! This was a lot of fun to watch. Thank you ZeRo.
So, if there is any disconnection in the match at all, (you know when the game lags out for like 6 seconds) the match is considered incompleteable, ergo, no one gains points. Usually it's because the other player probably rage quit.
That was actually super informative! Love the commentary breakdown!
I really don't wanna see the uploads go away after this fast. It will really hurt.
that's definitely a series I'd love to watch!
I only play casually with friends and barely played online.
I loved your analysis of tournament videos or analysis of online games like this one, as I learn a lot from it without having to actually play the game.
One of my best friend doesn't believe me that I learned some stuff just from watching your videos and "accused" me of training a lot in between two gaming session - while literally the only thing I did was watching your videos :D
I would like to see this turn into a "Journey to Elite Smash" kind of series simply because it looks like Nintendo made it LOADS harder to get there now.
I think the system is broken. It's SUPER easy for me. I already have almost every character in elite smash. So when I start a new character, it only takes 2-3 wins in a row. And then I'm there. Because my baseline is so high.
@@ForeverAbroad Really??? Wth Nintendo? 🤣
@@ForeverAbroad Its definitely broken. I got elite during launch on some characters that I haven't played since then and they're still in. Some characters who have similar gsp will lose 4x as much per loss as others, even against the same opponent. Elite is just a bad mode honestly.
@@jukeboxhero30 overall the threshold for elite is lower but if you have a character you don't play often and you win a few times you can get elite if your average is at least 8 million. If you play a long time and have many matches then you gain far less and lose more to keep you at that average gsp. The system can be cheesed through spamming items and camping 4 player smash so its a broken system. It does show your average skill to an extent if you only play solo quickplay or solo elite no items on. If your wondering how i know all this its because i have 1500 hours in the game and got most characters at about 10.5 gsp.
I LOVE low gsp to elite videos and always wished content creators did them more. You give such good commentary and God damn your Diddy is crazy. Really really looking forward to more of these videos
"They essentially throw moves without purpose"
-Me with Sephiroth in Elite Smash lol
Not without purpose. The purpose of any Sephiroth move is to cover the entire stage. It’s strategic gameplay!
This is my favorite video you dropped so far, love the insight you offer, do more!
I had my Dr Mario at 8mil gsp by default since I never used him in qp. I lost 5 matches and dropped to 2mil that fast. It was some absolute BOOL SHYET!
Bro I got into smash when I first saw your vids a couple of years ago, when you left I lost every interest in the game after a couple of weeks. Seeing you playing again, makes me want to play again, thanks bro and keep the good work! 💚

Ever time zero doesn’t upload I get ptsd that he’s not coming back
Oh no he hasn't uploaded in 3 day
Yes to series of this, so much to learn and will help you clean up your play again at the same time
I think the game is programmed in a way that if someone self destructs on pourpose, both players won't gain or lose any gsp to prevent people from sding on pourpose. Also if the opponent is replaced by a computer, you won't gain any gsp 100%
When somebody rage quits on quickplay/elite smash, you gain 0 gsp, and nintendo is not banning like it used to at the beginning.
My boy. Don't peace out on us.
I'm glad this video highlights how long it actually takes to grind GSP. Imagine doing this with frequent losses? Even at the 2 million range it's a struggle. It took me actual years of practice to get Hero to Elite Smash and about 270 online hours clocked. RUclipsrs make it look easy when they can get to Elite Smash in like 2 games.
I've played smash for 20 years now, with the will to improve every time, and the fact that you can't go lower in GSP that my average is a bit frustrating haha
Don't worry my average is about the same and I've been playing my whole life but I think I'm a bit too lazy try to read opponents and improve 😅
Seeing more of what it takes and how you explain the faults is actually really useful. I'd say keep doing this and keep that win and lose counter

This is just one of the many reasons why I believe you are a cut above other Smash Bros. content creators and why I would love to see a series like this continue!
Hey zero, you probably won’t read this, but you can do this! It’s very hard beating a bad mental state but if anyone can do it, it’s the best smash 4 player In the world. Also, Ligma balls. ;)

No posts from zero? Zero are you good is everything okay?
He’s good. New video up, he was gone because he was thinking on what direction to take the channel and our community in!
I guess ZeRo forgot that you don't gain GSP if the opponent leaves in the middle of the match.
Yeah, ZeRo, in case you ever do this again, you should just pure not count or have a different counter for disconnects as they do not affect your GSP whatsoever. So in reality, to get to 2 mil gsp, it took the wins minus the disconnects since those pretty much didn’t exist
i just came back to watch zeros old videos and I didn’t know he was uploading again. This made my day 😊
This potential series looks great! Perhaps a different character every few episodes to give tips for each? could be a welcome addition to it imo...
He should do one character at a time. You can't get gsp for other characters. It would just slow his progression. 21 battles just to reach 2 million gsp. Online is awful. That and every match is ranked unless you join arena's.
@@Dr4gon785 yeah thats true forgot that since I barely do online anymore ty
That was both entertaining and knowledgeable which I love about your video Zero! Definitely want to see nore!
this video literally proves how flawed the GSP system used in ultimate is
I wish there was an unranked battle for casual play. You almost can't expect a 1v1 setting where someone isn't trying too hard. Arenas are good, but I feel it's rough to have good matches when skill levels are constantly overlapping each other.
Hey Zero I'm glad to see you posting again I've missed your content a lot. I think a series climbing all the way to elite smash would be really cool. Keep up the great vids
Ay, where did man go? Thought it was daily from now on! Very sad times indeed :(
When someone disconnects mid-match, you get no GSP and that person doesn't lose GSP either; however, disconnecting a couple of times gets you banned from online for a couple of hours.
The quitter loses GSP. You just don't see it.
@@gr8645 I know that's not true because I have disconnected mid-match several times (usually when I get to a match in weird stages, with 4 players, items, specials or extremely laggy opponents) and I have never lost a single point.
@@TirsophChaistern I know it IS true because I just tested it. Went in a quickplay match and quit mid-match. Lost 31,303 GSP.
@@gr8645 man, that's cool and all, but you can't convince me to believe something different from what I've seen so many times for the past three years 😅
The fact I haven't lost GSP so far is the sole reason why I keep quitting matches I don't feel like playing; needless to say I've checked my GSP everytime afterwards.
However, I admit it's been a while since I last did that; I haven't played quickplay in 6 months or so. Therefore, I don't think it'd be crazy if what you said actually became a thing in the latest updates and I hadn't notice. I'll check it out when I play that mode again. 🤔

Bring this series back man. I would watch you just grind every character to elite. Easy content where you just clown the enemy.
dose any one know why zero didn’t upload today?
YAY MORE ZERO CONTENT! Glad to see you back man
Low GSP peeps give up easy because they KNOW when a high level player purposely lowers their GSP just so they can annihilate them. Its very very very common.
I disagree. A lot of times a player can be very good with their character and still be low GSP because of things like lack of matchup knowledge, inconsistent play, whiffed punishments, SD’s, etc. I have a few low GSP characters that I haven’t played since starting the game and have gotten much better with them so I have embarrassed a few players but my lack of matchup experience with that character has set me back many times. Which is also another point that people start the game off bad and come back to characters when they are better and with the way the GSP system works, they are in the same bracket they were in when they sucked at the game. Having a lot of previous losses also prevents them from climbing at a rate that they otherwise should.
Tbh I feel like I learned more with this vid than watching top level play. I see a lot of those players bad habits in my game and I feel like I can start working on them a lot more. I like this content Zero!
No upload today?

oh ok
I love this and would definitely like to see more! The way you explain what the opponent is doing makes this not only entertaining, but also informative.
Oh oh, zero missed an upload, what happened?
Keep it up! I'm enjoying how much detail and depth you give to each match, both of how you play and how the opponent is playing and what mistakes they are making and what they should be doing to learn and improve.
