    Ham Sticks are a pain to tune, SWR is great in the voice portion but unacceptable in the lower data side. I HAVE THE SOLITION! Have a LOOK.

      lol. I should keep the truck clean because you never know when you will make a video. I do follow my mom’s advice though to always wear clean underwear because you never know if you get into a car crash. Like that would be in my mind 🤣🤣🤣. See ya on the bands Chris. 🤙🏻

      Hey Rob. Nothing beats having a quick antenna handy for a quick pota session or rolling down the road.

    A suggestion would be to use a Smith Chart on the VNA. This gives more data and shows what influence the coil had in each configuration. 73 OM

    I've never used a hamstick before, but if it works on the phone section, couldn't you lengthen it to work at 14.074?

    • @MrMudsHamRadioRadioTime
      @MrMudsHamRadioRadioTime  21 день назад +2

      Absolutely. I used to do that but this way is a lot easier and quicker to get back to the phone section. Great comment.

      @@MrMudsHamRadioRadioTime Oh got it! So the 'adjustable' part of hamsticks aren't really that adjustable?

    • @Tommy_Boy.
      @Tommy_Boy. 21 день назад +2

      @@alexjh47 They are fairly easily adjustable. However, you need to use a small allen/hex key to loosen & tighten the locking screw. Some hams prefer to leave the screw in place at the length they use most, then remove the whole stinger/whip section with adapter (that has the hex screw inside) attached that screws onto the top of the lower coil/fiberglass section. ⚡

    Do you have quick disconnects on your ham Stick? I have the ones from shark. I had about 1.7 swr until I installed the quick disconnect and then it was close to 1: 1.

    • @MrMudsHamRadioRadioTime
      @MrMudsHamRadioRadioTime  21 день назад

      I ditched the quick disconnects a few years ago as they didn’t hold up to our tons of salt they put on the roads. Was having random issues. Interesting I did a test and every 2 inches of base lengthening would equal to a 1/4” of lengthening of the whip. Thanks for watching and the comment. 🍻

    Why not just adjust the ham stick?

    • @MrMudsHamRadioRadioTime
      @MrMudsHamRadioRadioTime  17 дней назад

      Great question. I usually do but you know when you hit that sweet spot and do t want to loose it? Just unclip this and you are back to that nano tuned perfect antenna. Also when it’s -40 I find it a bit a pain to take off the gloves and mess with it. Thanks for the comment.

  • @richiec7602
    @richiec7602 21 день назад +1

    I wonder if that would work on other antennas. I have a 4ft Firestick for my CB in my Jeep. I can’t get the swr down for the 10 meter band. I have shortened the adjustment screw and even took it out but it is still too long. I got to try it. Thanks

    • @MrMudsHamRadioRadioTime
      @MrMudsHamRadioRadioTime  21 день назад +1

      It should work. I did some testing and you get better results lengthening the top after the loading coil than the base. Please check back in with your results. 👍

    Great test. Was the stinger fully extended before adding the coil?

    • @MrMudsHamRadioRadioTime
      @MrMudsHamRadioRadioTime  21 день назад +1

      It was cut for the middle of the band. I usually leave a bit extra for tuning but this method seems to be a lot easier.

    Try the Yaesu FC-40 tuner with a 98" whip. This works great 6m - 40m. The FC-40 tuner is the must over looked mobile tuner for yaesu mobile HF radios. Just cut a 102" whip down to 98". As you change freq on the radio. The tuner will follow the change automatically. Most hamsticks are 93" in length.
