I was only in-country for two months, but my vote goes to Kaohsiung. It's like the Busan to Taipei's Seoul. Quick access to beaches to the west of the city, contiguous with the national parks and wonders of the southern tip, ferries out to islands, etc.
I used to live in Taichung and attended Morrison Academy. I will be visiting again at the beginning of Oct with a couple of American friends. I am planning on moving back there around 2021, hopefully to teach English and start a business. Your videos are great and very informative!
It depends on what kind of life styles you want. But I'll say Taichung is a good place for newbies to give it a try. Taiwan welcomes people who love this land and contribute their talents.

As a native Kaohsiung, have to say the "new style" work opportunities are almost in northern Taiwan. eg, IT, Startup..etc. Many young people left their home town to work after graduate from college. (Or even stay at the same city where they graduate) Only those traditional industries or factories remains. Besides, the air pollution is also worse than other part of Taiwan since those industries like steel mill ..etc. However, those who tends to work in Oil, Steel, Power industries, need to pass some national exams held by government. The pass rate is not high also cost few people stay in Kaohsiung.
Yes, if you would like to travel around this island, Taichung is the best place. And of course, the weather is much better. When I took military training in Taichung, I did hope that we could have a day off when there was a typhoon alarm. But every time it did disappoint me, always sunny there. But I still prefer where I live-Pingtung, much slower pacing but still could access to big city easier.
I second other comments that Kaohsiung’s high temperatures in the summer is really not that much warmer than Taipei or Taichung. The problem with Kaohsiung is that it gets hot earlier and doesn’t cool down until much later. Still Taipei usually gets the highest temperatures in the summer due to it being in a basin, while ocean breeze brings a little relief for Kaohsiung. But people forget that Kaohsiung and the south has the best weather in the winter, with low humidity and slightly cool temperatures. If I dares to say, almost California like. The only problem is the high air pollution generated locally and brought down by northerly winds carrying pollutants from Central and northern Taiwan and China. Finally as you said for western foreigners having real beaches near the center of the city is hard to beat. It is a fantasy of mine that they can develop Cijin into the Miami Beach of the orient.
Thanks for the warning about the heat in Kaohsiung, I've inferred similar perspectives from reddit. Will consider Taichung as my base for my Taiwan experiment.
Definitely Taichung! Taichung located at central of Taiwan, go northern or southern are so easy, and also near to countryside, people can go hiking or beach. Wonderful place.

Somehow the information is not completely correct. The average temperature from May to August in Taipei is higher than Kaohsiung, Taichung and other cities. Taipei is not only scorching but also terribly muggy during summer season. On contrary, Taipei is damp and cold in winter. However, Taipei offers more choices whether for children's education or others. If you are looking for a city with agreeable temperature and acceptable city function, then Chiayi city is better than other cities in Taiwan according to my personal point of view although it is a bit tiny. Kaohsiung would be my best choice except Chiayi despite I was born and raised up in Taichung.

If you are into history and culture then Tainan. If you are into shopping, museum and tourist attraction then Taipei. If you are into nice weather and parks then kaosiung. If you are into simple life then definitely Taichung.

IMO taipei is the best city. it's the main city in taiwan with a variety of restaurants and shops. people there speak english as well so they're more friendly and less ignorant. rent might not be cheap but if you're white AND going to taiwan, you could afford it. white peepo survive anywhere and everywhere.
You are right, Alan. Living in Taichung is much convenient to travel north and south. Also important thing is because of the central Range, it prevents Taichung citizen from encountering disasters by Typhoons.
Taichung indeed is the better choice in many ways among the cities. Taipei is not only rainy but also hot and humid while the job opportunities are less in Kaohsiung . In fact, Kaohsiung is not as hot as most would imagine, due to cooling effect of the sea, the highest temperature normally around 35 to 36C during summer, while in Taipei the normal high can reach 38 or higher for being located at the Taipei basement which is difficult to dissipate the heat accumulated therein.💟

東京=台北(首都) 集台灣所有資源於一身，什麼都好，缺點是天氣不好常下雨、生活緊張壓力大
名古屋=台中(中部唯一大都市)，大都市該有的機能都有，優點是天氣不錯，缺點是市區沒什麼風景區大眾運輸不夠發達
京都=台南(古都)台灣美食之都也是台灣人文古蹟最多的地方，都市機能很好，缺點是大眾運輸不夠發達

就我個人來說:
北部是台灣政治與經濟的中樞,生活機能完整方便,但物價是最高的.
中部可以說是台灣的文化中心,可以看到各種台灣的傳統文化
南部是古城,可以看到很多遺跡,人非常熱情,可以進行很多水上活動,這十幾年的建設,也變得非常適合旅遊和休閑,物價偏低
東部則是原始,可以看到非常多壯闊的自然美景,人相對純樸,生活步調偏慢
要說哪邊適合外國人居住 嗯....我不知道 XD 應該是要看外國人喜歡哪一種生括方式吧...XD
當地城市 生活一個月左右 才知道是否適合自己
我投台南，因為我住這，而且我認為這是個生活步調比較慢的地方，很適合休息，感覺很舒服～～

身為一個高雄出生，臺南長大，臺中唸書，臺北工作的臺灣人，我現在定居嘉義市。
物價房價低，市區不大只有東西二區，往南30分鐘可到臺南，往北1小時可達臺中，小小的地方百貨商場影城都有，還有小火車可上阿里山，如果喜歡海還可以上快速道路，三十分鐘內可到東石布袋，也可搭船去澎湖！在彌陀夜市還有新鮮漁獲叫賣。我們還有蘭潭仁義潭水庫，而且同時有嘉義大學。還有大型醫院。今年我們市區火車站已經改建好，不管是火車，客運或是搭高鐵轉接駁車進市區都超級方便。更重要的是中國遊客少很多，現在嘉義市真的是悠閒又好玩的地方！

台中物價便宜又不需要交通費!租屋價格也不特別貴!剛好在台灣中央只要有高鐵台鐵什麼地方都能到~而且中南部人真的比較熱情友善!
台北雖然交通住宿物價都相對高,但真的超方便!便利商店密度更高,公車捷運幾乎一下就到!鄰近的機場也比較大比較方便~

桃園不錯，不會很熱，離機場近，生活機能完善，坐捷運可達台北，但物價房價比台北便宜的多，也很容易買到別墅這類型的住宅。另外也有國際學校.蠻適合在台工作的外國人或家庭.

身為台灣人. 其實我覺得台灣人主要是對每一個自己居住的城市都有它自己的情感, 就我自己住台中 客觀來說. 我的想法跟你也蠻接近的, 台北雖然繁榮 但節奏偏快 雖然有捷運 交通便利 但確實也容易下雨.也相對悶熱 畢竟是一個盆地 , 台南 高雄 確實太熱了些 如果硬要跟台中來比. 但每個城市都有自己的特色跟美麗 要是綜合評價 我個人也覺得台中是最均衡的都市..(以上純屬個人看法,沒有絕對)

夏天涼爽，雖然冬天也很冷但是習慣了也不錯，往市中心的交通無論是公車還是捷運都挺方便的
景點也多，靠山靠河又是上游地區，水質非常清澈空氣也好

臺中明明就靠海，可是臺中的海邊很難玩。臺中港(期待未來的捷運及三井OUTLET)、梧棲漁港(不錯)、高美濕地(難停車)、大安海水浴場(太小了)似乎有不少景點，但有點難串聯這幾個地方一起玩(都隔很遠)。

我是住在高雄的臺中人。對我而言，高雄的氣候並不是單純的熱，要比熱，其實臺北跟臺中的盆地地形，會使這兩地在夏季的溫度超過海港的高雄，這兩地的熱島效應過於強烈了。但高雄的氣候問題是：1.在冬季，它屬於下風處，空汙最嚴重。2.冬天根本不熱，等於一年四季大概就是熱跟溫暖，不像臺中較為四季分明，蚊子在冬天不太會死，這也造成了高雄市區會有登革熱；另外，你買的冬裝能穿的日子很少，其實大部分的冬裝比夏裝好看，不是嗎？3.高雄在西南氣流屬於迎風面，所以在某些季節，高雄會遭遇相當大的降雨量，所以高雄會面對淹水問題；不過也因為這樣，高雄的防洪會做得比臺中好。

台北人目前住台中，工作關係台中台北兩地跑。真心覺得台中機能不錯，生活步調很棒，地理位置好而且氣候比較宜人，人比較熱情(相對不像台北比較冰冷)，房價相對台北合理許多。但是缺點就是交通(硬體建設：沒有捷運，公車班次不密集 及人民習慣：亂停車及停人行道，過馬路不禮讓行人的行為)目前還沒有趕上國際大城市的素質，雖然台灣其他地方也一樣，這點目前只有台北好一些些但一樣有很大進步的空間。如果住台灣不住台北，而且一樣要住大都市的話，台中會是我的第二選擇。

我住台中快四年了，這裡的確天氣很好，少下雨 又不會太熱，美食很多交通也非常方便生活機能佳，但是!!!!空氣品質真的不太好 來台中之前我鼻子不會過敏 來台中後換季就會過敏，尤其凌晨2-4點那時候更是廢氣排放高峰
讚讚，北中南東的優缺點幾乎都講到了，Allan真的是全台走透透。
補充個，台中是幾乎所有颱風都影響不到的區域，最多是西南氣流的豪雨，有時甚至穿心颱過後水氣耗盡就沒雨。
而東部則是颱風幾乎都有暴風暴雨，交通電力較易癱瘓。

認真說我不是台中人，但以天候，便利度，美食價格等，
台中與附近中部縣市的確是全台灣最適合居住的地方，而且往北往南車程都適中
台北夏天天氣太過悶熱，不開冷氣幾乎撐不下去（盆地地形真的太糟糕），也是台灣夏天溫度最高的縣市，
有的人可能認為南部會最熱，但其實不然，南部是熱而不悶，台北卻是又熱又悶，這種真的很讓人受不了
看過很多外國在台灣的youtuber，夏天全都跑了ＸＤ(我不是指那個瑞典人，因為我也想跑，可惜跑不了)
有捷運也補不了台北先天就不良的缺點，冬天又常雨，其實很不適合居住
可惜當初的政府就規劃錯誤，不然台中早有機會可以取代台北成為新首都

台北是盆地... 除了潮濕多雨就是更熱，除非整天待在冷氣房，
不然一般外國人應該很難適應濕熱天氣，
台北的好處是交通便利、百貨商場、夜市多，當然其他夜店 酒吧 也不少，喜歡熱鬧人潮的人可以考慮。
我是台中人 應該會選台中或高雄? 高雄真的很好 該有的都有 好像特別多音樂酒吧 有海港風情 就是夏天特別曬 台中就是天氣很好也是什麼都有 雖然人口第二多但路小條些 比較不像高雄那樣能勝任成為一個大都市的感覺 台北的話 常下雨和夏天悶就比較讓人受不了 只能說適合 working但不是最適合 living的地方了 台南應該也蠻多人會喜歡的 好像哪裡都能找到好吃的似的 不過我私心希望商業圈能再大點>

台中說真的現在人文素質也好南部很多...前陣子去高雄在路上看到不少沒戴安全帽、直接闖紅燈的機車，但我覺得撇除這些高雄也蠻適合養老的xd ，至少房價物價之類的都比台中台北便宜很多，有認識的住在高雄一樣的價格他們住在新透天，在台中的我卻住在老公寓裡⋯（但台中的交通直接用公車就可以甩打高雄的捷運+公車了，班次也比較密集想去哪都可以。）
推薦有家庭，想要有休息放鬆，又可以很快進入山區爬山運動的，而且交通很方便，推薦三峽北大特區，環境和生活機能非常好，可以去找北大特區空拍視頻了解一下，我們這邊很多外國人喔。

台南住了20年(因為工作),習慣這裡的步調，當然也遇過不少外國人，據說近年來有日本人和香港人來台南定居，就是因為台南的古都文化氣息

我住台中，我在台北只待過幾個月。
我的想法，沒錯，北部常下雨，但我覺得北部真的能逛能買的地方比較多。但是北部真的太擠了，車多人多。
反觀台中，一小段時期下個雨季，人口不多 也不少，生活也便利，車流量雖然算多 但不會太誇張。颱風也幾乎影響不到台中。房價房租也不像台北這麼高。
總體而言，可以住在台中，假日想玩的時候 可以跑去台北玩。或者跑去南部玩水。

Taichung located at central of Taiwan, go northern or southern are so easy, and also near to countryside, people can go hiking or beach. Wonderful place.

Somehow the information is not completely correct. The average temperature from May to August in Taipei is higher than Kaohsiung, Taichung and other cities. Taipei is not only scorching but also terribly muggy during summer season. On contrary, Taipei is damp and cold in winter. However, Taipei offers more choices whether for children's education or others. If you are looking for a city with agreeable temperature and acceptable city function, then Chiayi city is better than other cities in Taiwan according to my personal point of view although it is a bit tiny. Kaohsiung would be my best choice except Chiayi despite I was born and raised up in Taichung.

If you are into history and culture then Tainan. If you are into shopping, museum and tourist attraction then Taipei. If you are into nice weather and parks then kaosiung. If you are into simple life then definitely Taichung.

高雄工業區圍繞在城市的周圍，健康風險可能比較高，3-5年的短期生活應該還好，但如果10-20年的長期定居，這一點可能就要多加考慮了
目前高雄人口會被台中超過,就是因為拆遷了許多工業區,中油台朔,現在大型工業區只剩小港前鎮的中鋼台船了.
如果3~5年短期生活,可能不建議你來,現在是轉型陣痛期,工作機會減少,工業區減少的環保問題還沒收到成效.
但如果你是長期置產,你可以試試看賭身家,因為5年之後,高雄新火車站會完工,亞洲新灣區也跟著作用.
南高雄的大型建設都會進入成熟期,而到時候人口集中的北高雄商業聚落也會更完整.
中鋼台船那些大型國企的限期減碳減排時限也會到期.

IMO taipei is the best city. it's the main city in taiwan with a variety of restaurants and shops. people there speak english as well so they're more friendly and less ignorant. rent might not be cheap but if you're white AND going to taiwan, you could afford it. white peepo survive anywhere and everywhere.
You are right, Alan. Living in Taichung is much convenient to travel north and south. Also important thing is because of the central Range, it prevents Taichung citizen from encountering disasters by Typhoons.

高雄你來過保證就會愛上了，高雄其實是平均溫度比較高一點，但其實台灣最熱跟最冷的紀錄通常都出現在台北

Taichung indeed is the better choice in many ways among the cities.
Taipei is not only rainy but also hot and humid while the job opportunities are less in Kaohsiung .
In fact, Kaohsiung is not as hot as most would imagine, due to cooling effect of the sea, the highest temperature normally around 35 to 36C during summer, while in Taipei the normal high can reach 38 or higher for being located at the Taipei basement which is difficult to dissipate the heat accumulated therein.💟
