I'm a welder/fanricator and I cannot wait to do this to my boat. I've been thinking of almost exactly this!! It would be awesome to see a video of you running it on the water. Thanks for sharing, it really is invaluable to people like me
Hahaha ‘found sign post’ *looks both ways, hooks up chain to truck hitch and hits the gas* ohh look a sign. Jk this was really cool, I’ve been looking on how to build one of these for my small boat
Nice work making something that actually works for so cheap. To me the only thing that looks really objectionable is that huge bearing right in front of the prop like that. It is definitely going to starve the prop when you try to speed up. You do need a bearing there but it really should be smaller. The signpost also shadows the prop more than is desirable. I bet that is why you don't go faster at full throttle. Also, make sure your prop isn't spinning on the shaft when you try to go fast, that is also very possible. It may be tight enough to transfer some torque but not the maximum produced by the motor. In the future you should try to get one of those props with a hex bore and then you could just weld a bit of hex shaft onto the end of your round bar shaft. Anyway, like I said, good job actually making something.
Thanks for the information. As far as speed goes I’m not too worried about it. I don’t fly through the marsh at high speeds. I’ve flipped this boat getting in a hurry. I’ve got other buddies with kits and bigger motors and we all put around about the same speed
I just saw that I had comments, sorry for the late reply. This build turned out way easier than I thought it would. I thought everything had to be perfect for it to run smoothly but the couplings do their job well
I have a Go-devil Long Tail and a Copper Head Surface Drive. Now my Question is how are you going to keep the Grass and Cat Tails / Saw Grass from Wrapping around the Shaft because it is open. Looks good and a Lot Cheeper Enjoyed it
I have one just like it with a 301 predator motor but my boat is 16" flat bottom my motor sits up to high and the shaft is only 40' so at full throttle it just wants to lift the rear end of the boat up instead of thrust it forward so I can only get like 6mph it works for now but not good for my situation river current can get fast in some of the shallow spots so I'm limited to where I can go
i tried it without a sign post and roller bearings under the shaft to support it... when i put it in the water it jerked the whole thing and bent my crankshaft so my engine started knocking like crazy lol. now i need a new engine and a different design. Also dont forget to buy a left hand turning prop from ebay or you will go backwards
I’ve made the same mistake with the prop. As far as the crank getting bent I haven’t had that issue even hitting stumps which shared the prop before it bent the shaft
Curious what takes the thrust from the prop pushing forward? Looks like none of the bearings are taking that load which can damage your engine pushing on the crank.
I’ve been trying to think of something different. I don’t know many people with lathes. If you come up with something let me know. You can also use a trolling motor prop. Make sure it’s a 5/16 inside diameter
A surface drive gets its thrust from the rotation speed of the prop and that’s why surface drive props are only half way in the water instead of completely submerged
@@jwhitleyawl1 all outboards speed is determined by its prop speed weather it is 3” below or 12” . A surface drive actually loses power because of cavitation and most surface drives don’t have a cavitation plate on them and that’s why you need a bigger motor on it !
The information I got about the surface drive was from a sales rep. Do what you like and I hope it works out for you. Post a video of your build I’d love to see it.
The motor is small and the unit itself is smaller than anything else I’ve seen but that’s what I wanted. Something small and reliable and so far far it’s been exactly that.
Some say the dog never caught his breath. 😆

I have another video on here with me running it
Let me know if you make one. I’d like-to see it. Some of the local high school boys made them and the put their own touches to the design.
A lot of folks put together a kit and say that they 'built' the motor. You built your motor. Rock on.
He built the kit and bought the motor but we get what you’re saying
Holy cow i was watching all these mud motor videos and thinking i can make my own and save a ton and i came across this good work man
I love the clamps for motor mounts!!
Thank you. The clamps work well but look at few more references as far as the pivot points. I’ve changed them since this video
Hahaha ‘found sign post’ *looks both ways, hooks up chain to truck hitch and hits the gas* ohh look a sign. Jk this was really cool, I’ve been looking on how to build one of these for my small boat
This is a great build and detailed quite well.
How do the bearings hold up and keep water out? Just curious how long they last. Looking to build the same kind of set up.

How did you fit the coupling to motor ? Can you make a parts list please ?
Nice build jamie! Definitely doing this to my boat
I hope you do. I’d like to see what you come up with when it’s done
I just saw that I had comments, sorry for the late reply. This build turned out way easier than I thought it would. I thought everything had to be perfect for it to run smoothly but the couplings do their job well
Could make a materials list by any chance
I rate this at.....
😃😃😃😃😃
Five Smiles!
Excellent job.. how long is the shaft
What is holding the 2 lovejoy couplers together?

Nice job i might try and make this thanks man
That's really cool great job guy!

Is that really only a 3 foot shaft???
What keeps the shaft from sliding out of the bearing
Great build! Are those bearings waterproof? Thanks!
I doubt it. There are grease inserts on them and I grease them through out the season
@@jwhitleyawl1 Are the bearings bushings?
Great job can you tell me how long is your prop shaft and your sign post very smart build thanks for sharing
This one was only three feet. My other one is five feet.
Can you tell me which one you prefer better which one do you preforms better do you mind if I use your design thanks for sharing
excelente diseño... simple y muy rigido... 5 likes.
Got a parts list?

Where did you buy the shaft
Now I know what I’ll be using the sign post for that I also found lol
Curious what takes the thrust from the prop pushing forward? Looks like none of the bearings are taking that load which can damage your engine pushing on the crank.
If you look at any long tail kit the shaft is connected straight to the motor
When the engine gets destroyed from the thrust, you just buy another one. They’re cheap.
Excellent question, perhaps some kind of coupling at a bearing could be added to resist the thrust.
Locking colar should do the trick.
Where did you find the coupler that you connected the shaft to the motor?
I’m in Canada and they sell them at princess auto but you can probably find them at a harbour freight or farm equipment store in the US
Farm and home supply. You can find them on Amazon
Looks like a good idea, except I don't have welding equipment.
Muy bueno el diseño me diría la longitud gracias
Will this work good in lakes?
Great job!!
Is that shaft hallow inside
this is perfect!
Thanks
Where do y'all get your positive or left hand rotating propellers???
Get a right hand and flip iy
eBay or use an electric trolling motor prop
That tapered nylon just needs to fit snug on center of bolt and to the inside taper of the prop???
Yep. It hasn’t failed me yet. You need to bring an extra prop with you. I’ve sheered these props on ice and stumps.
I’ve been trying to think of something different. I don’t know many people with lathes. If you come up with something let me know. You can also use a trolling motor prop. Make sure it’s a 5/16 inside diameter
Isn’t the motor just a bit small ? Mines 212cc or is that a different measuring system ? I want to make a surface drive next !

Any chance you could make a dimensions list ?
Could you send links to the things you need to order?
Sorry buddy. I’m not very RUclips savvy. Jamie whitley on Facebook and I’ll tell you what you need
That beats the hell out of 5000 dollars or more,,don’t it👍🏻 ,,,it’s not what your horse trailer looks like,,,it’s what you offload that counts,,,
You should put a skeg on the bottom that is below the proper so you won’t hit it on anything
You are correct. I still haven’t done it but need to
How fast will it run
Quick jogging pace
How long of shaft is it?
Three feet
Good shit my boi
I can use the shaft from a weed eater/ wiper snipper
That looks hard but is your dog ok
I’m no fabricator and thought it was pretty easy. A little try goes a long way
Dog is fine. He wanted to go for a ride again
WOW...I am gobsmacked.
Is that a good thing?
Damn do a step by step so I can make one 😂
Pillow bearing in water? Wao.... 😯
The bearings don’t see much water. I do grease them when needed
Good idea
Why is EVERY mud motor video about the PREDATOR engine?
Is that the only motor out there?
I have an 8 hp Tecumseh motor that runs like a scalded dog.
Ingenuity
That sweeeeet
A lot of extra metal and extra details, see how the Vietnamese do it ...
How do the Viets do it different?
Man mine lasted like 3 seconds 🤷♂️
Mine is still working great.
Another season and mine is still running great
Hey buddy you got an email or Facebook could message ya?
