I lived in Greece for 7 years, teaching dance-the richest time of my life! I have been in England for 20 years now, but I never feel at home. It's time for relocation again.
I lived in Volos for 4 years. Minimum wage back then was 600 euro a month but it was two of us. Everything you said is 💯 It was the best time of my life! Would live there in a heartbeat ❤
I completely understand you! I am bulgarian and my family and I have been going to Greece every single summer for many years now... and all of us ..especially my mom and I , are truly addicted to Greece xD We love everything about it so much that my mom has turned our house in Bulgaria into a greek style house with the typical blue chairs, evil eye souvenirs and beachy stuff everywhere! xD We also dream of buying a small cottage there near the beach...somewhere in northern Greece one day.. {just cus is closer to Bulgaria and we can go more often} I cry every single time when we leave! And then i am in deep depression and sorrow for weeks after.. The fact that I live in London at the moment and am only able to go to Bulgaria {and Greece} only in the summer, drives me crazy and eats me on the inside! I try to find greek restaurants, festivals, shops etc in London, but is nothing like actually being in Greece. The weather is not the same, the food is still good but not to the same level, and to be honest even the greek expats here are not as welcoming, happy and smiling like the greeks living in Greece.. i dont know the reason...since they're earning more here and you would think they'd be happier.. but doesn't seem that way. And mainly the fact that I want to move to Greece permanently BUT know that I have absolutely no chance of earning the same amount of money I am earning here {as a nursery teacher} ...or any other job.. and the disability benefits for my poor vision would be half of what i take here {if they accept my claim at all} ..those sad but true facts eat me on the inside and I can't help but just hope that soon enough one day the Greek government will do something about it, and raise the wages and help the people who live there, to live a more affordable life. And then I will definitely go! But as of now, I am thankful that at least I get to travel there every year and i've seen so many islands and places, including Meteora , which is incredible btw! I am grateful for the british pound and the fact that travelling around Greece with pound earnings, it really feels cheap and affordable! I really truly hope that one day the wages will increase, because these beautiful and generous people deserve better!
Such a wonderful story and sweet comment! Yes, this paradox of living in a beautiful country and not being able to see it all is tearing me apart! I wish the best for you and your family, and I hope one day you will live permanently in a beautiful Greek white and blue house on the Greek shore!
I relate to this so much! After 10+ years of living in Greece, I still love it and hate it at the same time and yet, I wouldn't change it for anything else in the world. Great video. Thanks for your honesty Pati ❤
Very nice video!!!! You have become one of us in a very short time!!!! You describe the reality of living in Greece 100%!!!! I'm tired of these tourist videos. I'm wishing you the best as long as you will stay in Greece!!!!!
wow ! what a great critique waiting to retire to Greece another six years to go, I fell in love with Greece when I was sixteen the love has never left me ! thanks for sharing.
Well stated, Pati. We have learned to cook on one induction burner rather than run the stove or oven. Saves on electricity. We use lights only when necessary and for short periods of time. No dishwasher, microwave, washing machine or dryer. Multiple small fans in the summer rather than air conditioning and only sporadic use of heat (from an electric mini-split) in the colder months. Coming from America, these practices took me a couple of years to embrace. This year we noticed that very few people in our neighborhood keep lights going after dark. Everyone appears to be mindful of the exorbitant utility charges. All that aside, as you so graciously said, “Greece is forever in one’s heart.” To know it is to appreciate its uniqueness of character. Thank you for producing such a thoughtful video channel. 😊 -V
You are absolutely correct on your comments about Greece. Wages are low compared to the cost of living. You need at least 1500 euros net per month in order to live a kinda nice life in Athens.
I love your look out on live. It's so much different to mine but I could see myself doing just the same at the same time :D Life in Berlin is also crazy expensive atm too. If you want to find a flat for 2 people that has at least 2 rooms you can pay insane amounts just to be considered to get it. If I was by myself I could not afford it with my current job.
I'm half bulgarian born in Bulgaria and half ģreek on my mother side currently living abroad but I'm drawn to Greece I don't how to describe it I guess it's called the DNA 😅
Hello Pati! I just discovered your channel and I really love your videos as well as your vibe and positivity :) Seeing Athens from your point of view makes me appreciate a little more my city, that is often hard to do due to the difficult economic situation! I am born and raised in a suburb very near Kallithea and close to your age, so if you ever need any help with anything (ex. langauge wise etc) I would be happy to help you out. Take care, Φοίβη 😄

I used to consider myself an immigrant when I was in the UK. I intended to stay forever, and at the time, the whole process truly felt like an imigration. Since then, however, I moved countries 4 times, haha. So, given immigration is permanent, I think an expat is more suitable here.
Expat = expatriate is a person who resides outside their country of native origin. So please, unless your mother or father or both are of Hellenic origins, do not insulate us by using the word "expat."
I have been here for a year and a half leaving next week I truly did not like it at all, but that s my opinion,... the reason I m leaving aswell, lol go figure,... but to each there own
beautiful country to go on holiday, to live it s not my cup of tea at all, but hey you ve got to try to know right, I was glad my working agreement finished and I can move on,...

Thanks Pati ! nearly sixty years young but still very young at heart!!!😊
You're honest and accurate. One of the best videos about contemporary Greece.
Thank you so much! ❤️
Frist of all congratulations! I think you have this power that helps you being strong. I wish you all the best, Pat!

Thanks!

Thank you for such a lovely comment ❤️ I guess all this makes us appreciate the small pleasures in life more. All the best!!
I will be in Greece 31 December again, for a month . I can't wait to see the new metro in Thessaloniki.

I am an Athens-addict as well. It's hard to explain what it is. Maybe it's because the gods in Athens still dwell among the mortals 💗

It's ok, many people don't like it and leave. Biggest problem for me is the low wages.
