I felt like Starlight getting really mad at Hughie all the time doesn't feel right. Hughie's dad died, he got raped in the dungeon and raped a second time by the duplicate. like that wasn't consensual because Hughie didn't know who it really was.
but Starlight gets mad at him. Also, she didn't tell him about the abortion or discuss it so it comes off as hypocritical to get mad at him for something like that. She got mad at him for being raped.
I think the shapeshifter was right that Starlight puts herself on a pedestal.

I understand that it might be intended for Starlight to be acting irrational or out of line due to the stress she's in, but her chastising Hughie for not knowing it wasn't actually her just comes off rather as self righteous and projecting of the writers by "pointing out misogyny", which barely even holds up as an excuse. and the fact that him getting sexually assaulted by tek knight and ashley was played off for laughs and the show doesnt address it or the fact that he was r*ped by the shapeshifter at all feels all the more disgusting. the closest we ever get to a scene like that is when he cries to starlight and breaks down, but even then the focus is on his grief over losing his father. this was terribly handled and could’ve provided some meaningful commentary about the sexual abuse and personal struggles that men go through, but it felt more like it was done for shock value and for the sake of having people talk about how crazy and wacky the show is

    Season 4 definitely had issues.
The Frenchie/Colin plot line came out of nowhere and only served as a stepstone for Frenchie's and Kimiko's relationship
Edit: The excessive gore and sex serve mostly for shock value
Ryan goes from good boy to (maybe) evil every two episodes
Starlight is more unlikeable than ever and her powers suck
The show is way harsher on male characters than female characters

I can not believe Annie’s arc. I thought writers would’ve learned by now that the season 1 Invincible style of romantic conflict is NOT good and just tells the audience “oh hey this person is a dumb asshole”.
      Also spoilers . . .
Her powers are so useless that they had to have her physically overpowered the shifter to win . . . Without using her powers.
How the FUCK did Annie beat the shifter in a physical power fight, but Kimiko whose powers are literally just her physical abilities and regeneration DIDN’T !!!??? I understand that they wanted Annie to do it for revenge and arc based reasons, but come on. Could’ve been less lazy with it.
Also I am in the minority but I actually didn’t mind the Colin arc. Don’t get me wrong Colin sucks and is a horrible nothing character, but I like the exploration of Frenchies guilt. It could’ve just absolutely been done in a better way than him getting frisky with one of his past victims like w h a t 💀

The season was mostly written more with a psychological factor. one factor that cures the show is the fan base. Everyone wants action and gore every episode, when in actuality, it was evident that the show was going to go a more mental route with the characters they added.
Colin serves as a love interest for Frenchie only to play into his own guilt for his past actions. It's a similar thing for that girl Kimiko fought. Both of them virtually had no purpose other than bringing Kimiko and Frenchie so low that only the two of them could pick each up. It was a weird plot at first, but with thorough examination and actually letting everything play out (like what this season's theme was) it all made sense.

  • @TheQuietTimes
    @TheQuietTimes 2 месяца назад +71

I feel like this was the weakest season... with the strongest finale AND the most potential/intrigue for the next season.
I've always been A LITTLE underwhelmed with The Boys season Finales because despite always having a surprise death or 2, the show almost always "resets back to 1"...
And that means the opening episodes for the next season always end up having to establish a new threat, things ramp up, come to head, and by the end of the season everything resets again and a variation of the same cycle is repeated.
So while I didn't love most of this season, the ramp up was probably the best the series has seen (as when the ball does finally get rolling it never really stops), and the finale was DEFINITELY the best, and ultimately it did what it was supposed to. It raised the stakes and got me excited to see how this all goes down next season.

    • @Snzn_7
      @Snzn_7 2 месяца назад +3

Though the ending could have been elevated more if "The Boys" actually worked cohesively as a group for once before they get broken apart. Like the whole system they just became way mor less cohesive as a group that you always get the feeling that the group is slowly falling apart just by themselves alone.

    • @TheQuietTimes
      @TheQuietTimes 2 месяца назад

@@Snzn_7 But I think in many ways _"The Boys"_ slowly falling apart is very much a big part of cycle _"The Boys"_ have always gone through.
They've always been effective enough to stay in play (getting government support and backing despite all the things they do/accomplish that's far outside of what could be considered legal)... But there have always been things, be it personal or between them that have kept them from being an entirely cohesive unit, outside of certain times... Arguably when it matters most.
Even going further back than the show ever shows us (with Lamplighter frying Mallory's grandchildren), they have a tendency to self-destruct.
But outside of Butcher and when Frenchie turned himself in, I would post that _"The Boys"_ have been more of a 'cohesive unit' than in any of the other seasons. Things playing out poorly was less about them failing to communicate and execute, and more about there being more obstacles in their way that they couldn't have planned for or bested.

I think the problem with the politics is that it presents some left wing stuff as bad or hypocritical (like Neuman being a stand in for The Squad while just being out for power and being duplicitous), and then it presents average left wing folk as being genuine and good, but every single right wing character is either evil, deceived, or a dumb NPC, or all three. So it does make fun of all sides, but it only takes one side as possibly something a good and intelligent person would believe.
Which I mean I get it, but the writers definitely have a blind spot.

It doesn't even "make fun of both sides." Mocking ESG and DEI stuff from big corporations is more of a criticism of those corporations (mainly Disney, Amazon's biggest streaming competitor) than the frankly, idiotic ideologies from the radical left. And when they do attack the radical right, they go for the most strawmannish, stereotyping, low-hanging fruit out there, and directly attacks _all people_ who are conservative, and even those like myself, who just simply aren't a far-left Progressive. I'm neither left or right leaning, but seeing writers and directors act like assholes and be mean-spirited bullies isn't a good look, no matter who's doing it.

It’s crazy to me how many people are defending this season so much pretending like having negative view somehow is having something to do with being homophobic or anti woke. It’s not that at all. Frenchie plot seem forced, and the show had done a great job already building kimikos and frenchie relationship for 3 seasons. Homelander only great part was him going back to lab. Every season had key moments that were over the top but very meaningful. Season two Stormfront was great, MMs past and how it related to the villain was amazing. The scene where Becka died. Season 3 hit hard from the start and soldier boy was on point the whole season, Maeves redemption. Season 4 started so slow and the plot just seem like it could have been 4-5 episodes. Very forgettable season. Not to where you write the show off but definitely the weakest and pretend like it was something amazing is a disservice because the first three seasons were amazing

I loved first, second and third. It focused on the plot and killing supe's and how supe's are hypocrites. It was lovely.
Season 4 was overshadowed with Trumpism and overwhelmed itself with almost making everything politic and how 'right winged people are racist and neo nazis that wants to put left winged people into camps' ideology. Literally 5 out of 8 episodes ruined it for me.
Last 2 episodes was fine though.
Since the 'election year' they have been doing with this season is now gone, I really hope writers go back to focusing on Plot. And there is a lot of things to focus on besides politics.
They have Homelander being a threat, Ryan literally losing his mind and turning to secondary Homelander, Butcher having V'd up Tumor straight out of Venom, The boys getting kidnapped by Vought n supes. There's so many things to focus on in the future. But if they gonna waste this story telling by injecting their ideology and "fuck trump and fuck right wingers" mentality for 5 straight episodes again then nah.

Im very hopeful that theyll focus on the characters next season based solely on Hughies proclamation to the rest of the boys on trusting Neuman. I think that speech he gave about beating monsters by embracing their humanity is the main message of the entire show, kinda like how Puck summarizes the story of Berserk in Blackswordman arc.

I loved this season overall. I do think Kimico and Frenchie kind of felt like they were there to be there mostly.
I do understand where you're coming from that the Boys weren't really dealing with trauma much. However with what everything else was going on they didn't have time to decompress cause everytime something shitty happens like the Hughie sex dungeon... at the same time they find out they're gonna lock dissidents in internment camps and they're going full totalitarian. They did have a beat there where he said he wasn't alright. But yeah also in the final bit with the shifter again Hughie didn't have time to really sort that shit out him and Annie had a little reconciliation but with all the shit within the country going down they don't have time to get their own shit in order.

Im disappointed that Hughie’s dad died and it was meaningless in the grand scope of the season. They just made Hughie comic relief(being SA’d isn’t funny but I guess the writers think it is.) Starlight getting mad at Hughie for having sex with her literal clone was so lame.
And what happens to Hughie’s Mom? I can’t imagine they brought her back just to have a 3 week relationship with her son before he gets taken to one of those slave camps?

I slightly disagree with the Boys making fun of everyone equally, they're kinda doing what Camron Coleman the news guy said to the Deep about how he talks bad a little on their side so he appears fair.
The thing that annoyed me the most with Starlight was them giving her a new problem that their target audience would support her in, like abortion and being mean as kids instead of facing things like the innocent dad she killed and saying she doesn't care she did this when they had to take Hughie to a hospital.

Homie had one of the best moments in S4E4, and I really thought he was genuinely going to have a character shift.
...And then Firecracker's titties completely ruined it.
    It's just, umm...yeah.
At least those scientists got theirs, but it's ruined by him turning his back on the whole point of visiting the labs to begin with, which tells me the shock-value was more important than what it ultimately meant for the character.
Hughie got fucked over for no reason. Frenchie also got straight character-assassinated with his fling with Colin, so it's not just Hughie who I think was poorly handled.
It's not so bad, but it's a lot of dumb mistakes that feel completely unforced.

I personally think A-Train did so much fake movie stuff with his brother present, and that made his brother skeptical of what else A-Train was doing at Vought (good or bad), plus his brother was angry at A-Train for being around his kids (so he'd be more prone to blurting out scathing borderline nonsense stuff).

At surface level it's just Homelander torturing a bunch of people in horrible ways, but everything he does to them is supported by a story that tells us something about him. Pain, embarrasment, fear, etc.
I get the urge to make episodes like the V'd up farm animals going ballistic. Sure. That's pretty fun and terrifying. So, no, it wasn't completely funny at all. He was written as a very tragic character and it was later touched upon both that and losing his father. It wasn't just passed off and he has an actual serious breakdown. Kind of missing some things, buddy. And, Frenchie's arc? Really? What a build up! Everyone's a fan of him and kimiko, but really it's kimiko's fault for keeping him at bay and pushing him away. Season 4 kicked a lotta ass and this show really maintains that level of consistency
The political side was always there. Vought has always been involved in in that LOL how is this something that was missed or something that's new to viewers?

This show would've been better if they'd followed the comic more faithfully. I like the idea of punching up and using your noggin rather than powers, but the writers of this show aren't even doing that right anymore. They neutered Butch, Frenchie, and MM to do it. MM should've had his fair one with Soldier Boy at the finale of last season with temp V. Why they enjoy humiliating MM is beyond me, but he's the most unfortunate casualty.

I agree with most of what you said. This season was certainly not trash but as far as writing is concerned it was the weakest so far. It was ALL prep for S5 so I hope it pays off

This season was laughingly awful, except for the Soldier Boy cameo

I agree with a lot of what you're saying. I feel like they benched everyone with any degree of testosterone this season, and packed it full of filler.
Frenchie's "big gay summer" came out of nowhere and it seemed like it reversed he and Kimiko's development, considering they'd come to terms with what they were already. Also, they expect me to believe that the formerly trafficked child soldier went to bed with some rando from Starbucks? Get real. And the Shining Liberation stuff lead nowhere.
Butch was an invalid for most of it and his character's internal conflict seemed forced to me. Also, his powers are terrifying, but I liked the Homelander parallel better. MM is routinely humiliated and I hate that considering how badass he was in the comics. He's always getting jizzed on and assaulted, but noone is running to his rescue, only Hughies.
Hughie is an insufferable beta and I cannot stand him. He's this spineless simp for starlight, who used to be great, but now she's this exceedingly arrogant career activist that hates the world. Zero optimism from her. She used to be refined if not a little jaded, but she was still a beacon of purity and hope despite her flaws.
Also, hot take, but despite A-Trains popularity, he should be dead. It would have landed narratively for him to die tragically when he murdered Blue Hawk, seeking redemption the only way he knows how. Instead, hes back and his heart isn't giving him trouble anymore, because with him around the writers don't have to think as hard.
Also, Sage is on fraud watch, because so far all she's done is pass herself around The Seven and assume responsibility for the current shitshow with zero explaination. Its like I burn your house down cooking you food, and then brag about how it was always my plan for you to purchase a new house with the insurance money.
