Foxbody Convertible sub-frame connectors install

  • In this video I install the sub-frame connectors under the car to help tighten up things. It worked. The convertible has a few more under carriage pieces than the hard tops so slightly more work is involved. Between those connectors and the BBK strut tower brace the car no longer rocks or rolls like it used too (except when I am jamming the old school rock of course). Some commenters claim since I did it on a 2 post lift I welded the frame in a warped position. We made sure the car lifted off the ground evenly. We measured the car's ground clearance and the door gaps after the install and absolutely nothing changed. The 1 inch x 2 inch metal connectors are not thick enough to hold the car from flexing back to its original shape.. They simply connect subframes. They do not hold the car at specific angles. That would require a roll cage with a minimum of 6 solid weld points above the floor Thanks for watching.

One issue. The car needs to be supported by the suspension when you weld the subframe connectors into the car. By picking it on lift and letting the suspension hang, the body and frame are twisted. By welding in the subframes with it twisted you just made that twist permanent.

I had looked into that and watched several other channels. Decided to do like some others had and just make sure it all lifted dead level at the same time from the same lift points. Not really twisted but maybe a little arched. Thanks for watching and may we all learn from each other. Very valid point.

Nice add on. Welds don't have to look pretty as long as they hold 👍

I've got to do this on my SSP but my vert already has them. In NC for cars over 30 years old you don't need inspection anymore so you can put you an off road H pipe on there. I'm sure my welding would be worse

Me and the inspector go way back so I never have issues. 😁He's a hot rod guy.

But youre suppose to weld it with the car sitting on the tires, IF not chasis will twist...

We watched all 4 corners carefully and made sure they lifted at same time. A 4 post lift would have been nice but wasn't in the cards. It still sit back down with same clearance as before. Anyone who does keep weight on the wheels does have the advantage unless shocks are worn. It still flexes some but is way better and measures same as before. Thanks for the comment though so others will learn.

Bro, as that guy with the long name JSCwatever said, your car needs to be on the suspension. The wheels or the spring perches. I hope it didn't mess it up to bad. Even more, I hope no one watched this and did it the way you did. Level or not the weight of the car has to be on the suspension.

I agree that suspension loaded is best for all who are reading comments. I did not have that style of lift available. On my follow up video I go over all that and even show the welds held up the door gaps even still the same. Those subframe connectors are not as strong as you think. They do not hold the frame in one place only a 6 point or more roll cage will do that.. They connect the sub frames.they do no hold the frame in one position. The frame can still twist with connectors just not as easily. I tell everybody do what you can afford. Thru the floor and ladder style will hold the floor a lot more square, but 2 pieces of hollow metal in a parallel setup will not keep car from flexing. Common physics

100% the car has to be on a 4 post drive on ramp, or 4 cribs. DO NOT install like this.lol
