good story, I think the important part is, that you didn't leave your guitar, under the bed for good. I know music saved my life, the live musician, is going instict, sampling, lack of patience, of the new generation. live in times, playing the guitar is cool, and very time consuming, your videos will , incourge the new generation. and the live player, won't fade away... Rock on...John lightfoot.

I watch your channel for the following reasons:
    1. You are quite a good bass player
    2. You play many of the songs I like
    3. You are a very humble person (a bit too humble?)
    4. You obviously derive much joy from the music that you play
All of that makes you an interesting person to watch and root for.
    Don't change a thing!

I've played about 30 years and you're by far the best Rush cover bassist I've ever heard... hell, one of the best 'cover' bassists I've ever heard. Your ear and attention to detail; unreal. Thanks for the inspiration!

This is the first message I’ve ever left on a RUclips video. Thank you for all the GREAT music you are making. Next week I’m buying myself a Bass for my 50th birthday. I’ve never touched a guitar before in my life. Well other than going to the guitar store a few times a week for the last 6 weeks and plucking out the C major scale over and over on various Basses LOL. Your videos are a great inspiration! I’ve always been drawn to the bass line in music but most times it is mixed in so low you have to strain your ears to hear it. You featuring these lines is indeed very educational. You are providing a great service. Thank you- P.S. you are a funny guy! “That was a dark day” & “Sure you were mister... sure you were...” LOL

I haven't responded to any comments left on this video because the response was so overwhelming that I felt, "If I respond to one comment, I'll have to respond to them all." But, in your case, I will make an exception. Thank "you" for the kind words and I truly wish you all the best on your musical journey. I'm so happy to hear that you'll be starting to play the bass and I hope you derive as much joy and satisfaction from playing as I have. Please remember that before the joy and satisfaction hit, there will be plenty of thigh-pounding frustration, but that's all part of the journey. If there's anything I can ever do to assist you, please don't hesitate to reach out. Take care.

Hey Man! Sorry it took me a bit to reply to this. We went on vacation and then honestly I'm so bad at youtube it took me a while to find this comment again. I got my bass one week ago and I'm so happy! Its a Yamaha TRBX 304. I had my first lesson the day after I took it out of the box and I think I'm going to like my teacher a lot. After a week of playing ever spare minute of every day my fingers feel like raw hamburger and my back is kind of sore when I wake up but man do I LOVE IT. And yes lots of frustration but Its so worth it those few times that my fingers cooperate and I peck out a blues line or the first few bars of My Girl. LOL. Lots of C Major scale stuff. Anyway thanks again for all you do! Heh, I just re-read this and I sound like a 10 year old instead of a 50 year old. I guess the bass will keep me young!

I've been playing bass guitar (mostly rock) for > 40 years. Fortunately, I came across Troy's channel a few years ago. He never spoke and then I found this video where he speaks about his history. How can such a uber-talented bass player be so humble about his abilities? So natural, technical, captures all of the subtleties in lifting bass lines in order to cover them. Troy: I too found my second wind and owe a lot of that to watching your videos from here in Canada. I hope you never stop, brother !

What a thrill to hear your story and hear you speak as a regular guy, not just a RUclips hero after watching you all this time. My background is similar to yours, I just wish I could have evolved as far as you did. You are an amazing player and an inspiration knowing that it is as simple as hard work and determination to learn a song and perfect it. Even more so is that you are as humble and genuine as you are a great player. Thank you for doing this, please don't stop.

Thanks for your transparency and honesty. It's great to learn more about the player behind the bass. Thanks again for all that you do on this channel. - from Santa Barbara, CA

I've played guitar for about forty years, and I hate to admit, I, when listening to and playing music, took the bass, like the drums, and other instruments, for granted, secondary even. I don't remember now how I stumbled on to your channel, several months back, but it has been nothing short of revelatory. You, and your wonderful playing, has not only given me a new appreciation of the bass, and bassists, but love for this instrument. How could I have been so ignorant all these years! Anyway, thanks so much for all your great work, and passion for the noble bass.

"Uhm's" and the "And So" is a natural link of communication. Don't give yourself a hard time over it. It is absolutely natural unless you are reading a script. Please cut yourself a lot of slack and relax and just be yourself. the story will flow naturally as you are natural anyway. Thanks for sharing your story. It is baffling to me that you don't like to entertain to audiences as you are a great bass player and so gifted. I am so glad you are able to still share your talent and you have helped so many and inspired many people as well. I am glad for the fact that you found your joy in music once again. It would have been tragic to see this talent fall to sleep and never be reawakened. I want to wish you every success with your music and with your life in general. You are obviously a person who has impressed many people including many super music stars. That is for good reason, trust me. May God bless you and may you always have your music and talent to reach out to and to reach others as well through that music. It is a gift that you so willingly share and I thank you so much for that.

Hello Troy. RUclips is full of super-confident, self-aggrandising extraverts, so it's really refreshing to see someone who doesn't fit that mold. V interesting to hear some background... keep doing things your own way.

Troy, Funny how things fall into the right place at the right time - like they did for you in creating this channel. I'm sure there are many reasons people watch your videos. For me (a hack drummer) I've always loved the bass low-end sound and the way a drummer and base player can lock into and create the groove of a song. I discovered Rush in the 2112 crowd. I too had gone from KISS to Skynyrd (and others) until a friend lent me his cassette of 2112. I never gave it back...you're playing has helped me understand and appreciate even more the greatness of Rush! It's a music that has hit home with me for close to 40 years and is worth, and even stands up to, scrutiny - in a good way! You enjoy getting messages from your subscribers - we enjoy getting a message that THJ has just uploaded a new video. Keep them coming and thanks for all the time and effort you have put into them!

Troy, you are absolutely the best. I am reminded of an old quote from some obscure sci-fi... "Shared pain is lessened, shared joy is increased." That is the power of your music... of music in general, but especially yours, so obviously over brimming with joy.
Thanks to google's nasty G+ experiment, I was cut off from comments for a very long while, so it's been a long time since I've posted a comment on one of your videos, but I've been here the whole time, enjoying every one of them. Every time you post a Rush cover, I immediately pass it on to my best friend who is also a huge Rush fan, lately with the tagline of "In today's installment of Wal era songs (re-)covered on the Wal..." I know he absolutely enjoys listening to your renditions every bit as much as I do. Your tributes to Chris, covering some of my all time favorites from the Yes catalog, are also among my favorites from the time-of-no-comments.
I know you are reluctant to hear it, but you increase all of our joy, Troy, and we're all very, very grateful for it. I hope you will see your way clear to continue doing so for a very long time to come.
    With my fondest regards!

That whole bass lesson thing reminds me of when I first started learning guitar. At first my teacher started learning out of the books and i made very slow progress. After a year or two i got a new teacher who told me bring in CDs of whatever music I liked and had me learn those songs. Since I was learning music I enjoyed listening to anyway, my playing ability quadrupled within 2 months and to this day I continue teaching myself songs. He also showed me how to play by ear and improvise very early on, which was very helpful. My ear has gotten a lot better over the years but it still takes me a long time to figure something out if it isn't super basic.

Troy, my genuine thanks goes out to you for not only taking the time to share yourself with the world, but by reemphasizing the fact that hard work and attention to detail, is what makes all great bass players. I played guitar for 43 years and switched to bass about 4 years ago. Similarly, it has totally rekindled my desire to listen, dissect, and learn. You, my friend, provide clarity in the way you play that helps me in my own learning. I also went from copy tunes, to originals, and then back to copies.
For what it's worth, your decision to face the camera, and share with us, is a gift. One that I feel fortunate to be enjoying. Thanks again, motor on, and well wishes to your bass future.

I can really relate to your story. I too got really burned out and music became a job that on New Years about 3yrs ago I literally put my bass under the bed and would rather do laundry than look at it. I was very bitter and felt disgusted at the 30+ years of hard work and dedication I had put into this “dream” I had. I did become a “professional musician” whatever that means. . However I just couldn’t do it anymore. But to make a long yet similar story short, recently I have left the 6-string under the bed and pulled out my Brother-in-law’s Mexican J-Bass and started to re-learn some Rush covers. That’s when I ran across you on here. So now I too have ended up back in my room learning Rush songs and how to enjoy it again. I know my story isn’t unique but I just thought I’d share it. Thank you for what you do.

Your tastes (or at least the songs you choose to post here) closely match my experience growing up, and second, not being a musician, your bring to life the technical aspects of these awesome songs. We're 1000 miles apart in life experience (my father would say we went to different schools together) and Mr. Bollacks probably still couldn't be bothered to look over his glasses at your playing, but I, for one, applaud you good sir. Well done!

What do you mean, you're "not a musician"?

    • @greenoak1
      @greenoak1 7 лет назад +1

TJH3113 - I mean, I don't know... I play an instrument that has notes and all, but I'm just sort of free flow - couldn't really say what key I'm in or even what beat count I'm in. And I can rarely reproduce what I just played - frustrating for real musicians who ask me to simply repeat what I just did... On the other hand, you all have discipline and structure. Doesn't seem right to lump the two types of play together.

Thank You! for sharing your story. You have established such a baseline (pun intended) of excellence that I watch your videos out of just pure enjoyment. I've referred to your videos countless times for covers I'm learning for whatever project I'm involved and am glad every time I see the "wall of heads"! Every time I'm working up a bass line and it just doesn't sound right (rhythm off, missing note, whatever) I can count on you to show how it's REALLY supposed to be played and sound. You're not alone. Many of your experiences have been shared by many, me included. Thanks, again. I look forward to your next creation...

You are way more than halfway decent my friend. I've was a studio musician for years, played tribute music for over 30, and been a bonafide musician since 1962 when I began violin lessons at age 7. I've been in the company of celebrity players. You are among the best.

Just a quick note to say, I enjoyed your long winded message. Finding out how someone who has a quailty I admire got to where they did is fascinating and amazingly, I followed a similar path except, I started up in a band in the 7th grade and loved performing. I did that for 11 years until I faced reality, knew I couldn’t support a wife and kids as a musician and gave it up for 30 years. I was coaxed back into playing by my wife and an old band mate on my 50th birthday and I have been using your channel to learn to play again. It’s been great spending time with you working on great songs. It's kinda like sitting front of a record player going over a song but better. Dragging the curser is easier than moving the needle. Thanks for your playing

Remember you have been immortalized on youtube just like a movie star. Your work will be here for life and whoever downloads your videos you make so they can reference them for that special song. I wish I was half as good as you are. Thanks Troy. Rock on brother!!!

Your videos are so helpful for my students and I! It`s also nice to see long-form bass content in the era of clickbait (tik-tok, instagram etc...). Most content creators are hyperfocused on engagement, views, and likes. Amazing to see someone doing it for the love of the process.
I`m going to start posting long-form content/full covers as well so you`re a huge inspiration. Much love Troy!

It's always great hearing from the guy behind the talent. Great stuff. My first album was KISS Destroyer (Detroit Rock City). Then my friend turned me on to Songs From the Wood and I've been hooked for life. Thanks for all the Tull you do so well. You are truly gifted but I think I've told you that before. It's worth repeating. The best part is your willingness to share your gift with the world.

Thanks for giving me that little background on your history with music. My bass had been gathering dust for 35 years when I decided I'd learn the song that I was learning trying to learn when I put it down: Day of the Eagle (Robin Trower). That's how I found your channel. That one song was supposed to be just a small distraction; I never intended to "pick up the bass" again, but your channel has inspired me to keep going. I love that RUclips gives someone like you the opportunity to share and act as a conduit to energize others, like me.

Thank you for sharing your talent and time, and no small measure of humility. It is a pleasure to watch you play. You've been my go to guy as I had started a wedding band and had to learn many tunes in a short amount of time. Funny, my story is so similar to yours. First influenced by Kiss and Gene Simmons. Moved on to Rush, Yes and The Who. Then heard Return to Forever, Mahavishnu and such. Anyway, before I get to long winded, I also got inspiration from watching the passion you play with. So, all the best to you my friend. The bass rules!

I play along with your videos on a daily basis learning songs for my cover band and am indebted to you for facilitating my learning process. You are gifted and humble, but you should be proud of your contributions to the arts and humanity because they foster better music and music fosters happier people. I also enjoyed hearing that we have pretty much the same early trajectory: Kiss to Black Sabbath to Rush (All The World's A Stage in particular) to Kansas, etc. Love your basses, too... nice to see someone playing Guilds! Again, thank you for all the effort you put into these videos.

Thank you Troy. I started playing bass in 1979 when an older cousin offered to teach me. My parents,(who were lower middle class) bought me my first proper bass for Christmas that year,(a short scale Fender Music Master). I remember my father saying, "I better not see that thing collecting dust in the corner". Within the year he was begging me to put that thing down and go outside....lol ! My story bares a striking resemblance to your own in that "playing out" was a necessary evil but never the reason I began playing : ) I just wanted to say I thoroughly enjoy your videos and attention to detail and would be lying if I said I didn't also enjoy your videos as an instructional tool as well......thank you and please keep posting !

Troy, I can't thank you enough for the channel and your transparency. I've been playing for years and now my 10 year old daughter decided the electric bass is going to be her musical focus...switching from the clarinet 😁 she listens to isolated bass tracks and she can tell you who James Jamerson is and why he's her favorite. All that to say, thank you Sir! You inspire a lot of aspiring players and multiple generations too.

P.S. Look into Levon by Elton John. Brian Odger's playing was insanely awesome. There are no decent covers of that one and I am having a blast working on it. I'm lightyears away.

I just recently subscribed, but I have sporadically watched your videos for about a year. I started playing bass at 15, and I stopped about fourteen years later (not sure why) because I loved it and still do. Like you, rself I took about a few months of lessons, they were boring, however my teacher did teach me Freewill lol. Geddy Lee is a huge influence, he is my favorite without question, and you play a lot like him, getting in those subtle notes that most of other youtube players I''ve listened to miss completely. You are part of the reason that I've started playing again., just for the pure enjoyment of it. So, thank you much for all of your work here.

Quite inspirational and very humble! I've always loved bass, but I learned to play piano a lifetime ago instead. I've also always loved drums. Rhythms have captivated me as far back as I can remember. In fact, years ago, I liked to call myself a drummer who plays keyboards. Unfortunately, I haven't done any serious playing in years. It's not so much that I lost interest. It's just been tough times for more than a decade now. Perhaps I will start playing again someday. Sorry to talk so much about me. I guess your candor really got me thinking.

I discovered your channel a month or so ago while trying to find bass lessons for War Pigs. I’ve probably watched that video a hundred times (at 50% playback speed) just to pick out all the tiny nuances you’ve amazingly captured. Any time I’m learning a new song now I check your channel first before looking anywhere else. Keep em coming. You’re a fantastic player and it was nice to see your humility as well. As an aside, at the very end of the solo section of War Pigs it looks like you’re trying to hold back a smile. Smile away man...you earned a little celebration for that one. You absolutely nailed it!!! I’ll be grinning ear to ear if I can even come close to your performance on that one! Cheers!!!
