    ⚡ / 🔥 😱 🔥
That was a sixteen year old Su at that Budokan Black night concert.
'Rondo of Nightmare'" had it's world premiere the night before at the Red Night show.
Her voice has only improved in the eight years since.
It's easily in my top ten BABYMETAL songs.
Su performed three solos that night.
She did 'No Rain, No Rainbow', followed by 'Akatsuki' earlier in the set.
The two younger members, Yui and Moa (as Black BABYMETAL) performed two songs without Su.
And there were ten songs with all three members on stage.
That Black Night Budokan concert from March 2nd, 2014 is still one of my favorite BABYMETAL shows of all time.
I love the staging, but Su's vocal performance of this song at Wembley Arena two years later is even better.

Su was 16 here. Watch the Akatsuki live Budokan 2021 - you'll see how Sumetal improved even more.
And to see the other side of the group:
Songs like 'Catch Me If You Can', and 'Yava!' are on the fun side.
'Megitsune' is BM classic, with traditional Japanese elements
'Sis Anger', or 'GJ' are heavier songs (instrumentally) but are performed by Moa and Yui (while Su rests during long sets)
'Karate', and 'Syncopation' are more of modern metal sound (metalcore, djent)
'BxMxC', 'PA PA YA', for their more mature, and recent pieces. They are from the latest album.
and 'Road of Resistance' is what I consider their most epic song overall, where all their talents - singing, choreography, instrumentation, crowd control - are fully displayed. Must watch the live in Japan version.
What I like about Babymetal is, they have a incredible range of sound, so almost all of their songs are recommended to listen to, as they sound way different from one another. You can never go wrong. Also, always go for live performances, as that is where they thrive - they really put so much effort in their production.
p.s. After watching the above mentioned songs, go watch the music video 'Doki Doki Morning', their very first single and music video - so you can see where they started, and appreciate how they evolved.

Great & Thanks again from Japan 有難う💛。"Rondo" is a musical form with a recurring leading theme. I can't tell how many times I have heard this song. It is literally a rondo of happy dream for me.
Kamis' (=Gods') super solos were excellent enough as a main event in the show, but once the 16-year-old Queen (as of 2014) emerged from the underground, she colored everything differently with her penetrating voice then turned Kami Band's plays into a ritual to summon her.

So if you're gonna binge, I'd very much recommend finding a full concert. A HUGE part of their magic is how they manage to build the energy up from song to song over the course of a performance. They give everything they've got from the second the curtain drops to the very last note and by the end you're completely hypnotized and completely exhausted for them. Also, don't sweat the language thing. The stage work, choreo and vocal tone is all designed to get you 90% of the way there as far as the song meanings, but it might take a couple of viewings of any particular song to get everything out if it.

  • @Varksterable

If you think after a few songs they are 'out there and crazy' then you have a treat in store!
BM brought me back to 'current' music after deciding a few decades back that I was perfectly happy sticking to what I knew and liked.
They kicked open a few doors I didn't even knew existed, far less that I should venture into them.
All in one band, and only 3 albums.
There are a few BM songs I'm not really keen on. I also have a few songs I have grown bored of. Some change from day to day, mood to mood.
But I estimate that I have listed to these 3 (three!) albums for over 6000 hours. Not intensely, of course. But it has just become a part of my life.
Because each and every song is worth some thought and attention. A gold mine for a reactor.
Enjoy your journey in the foxhole.

Thanks for doing an other reaction, Babymetal actually had 2 Babymetal custom guitars with ESP, you could order the first one was also available in a smaller size.
3:45 at least this guitarist, Ohmura, has least one 1 ESP custom guitars as well you can order.
4:27 actually bassist BOH is a great fan of Billy Sheehan, Billy is who he looked up to when he started playing 6 string bass. Billy and BOH have even performed at this same famous venue in Japan that is shown in the video together ones !
What is maybe the amazing to me... at this show she was 16 years old, performing at the venue she dreamed off one day performing. Babymetal had 2 sold out shows at the Budokan back to back (Red Night and Black Night). Budokan is the 'Madison Square Garden of Japan', it's actually a marital arts venue. Build for the Olympics of 1964 (specifically Judo if I'm not mistaken). What would you do if you've already reached your life goal at age 16 ? Well, Babymetal announced their first World Tour at the end of the second night. The other girls were still 14, so Babymetal holds the record of youngest female act to perform at Budokan.
Funny you mentioned Dragonforce, because Babymetal has a song called Road of Resistance which has a feature: the guitar parts were written by Herman Li and Sam Totman of Dragonforce !
Rondo of Nightmare maybe best fits progressive metal, but the most progressive song from Babymetal is: Tales of the Destinies. It's clearly Dream Theater inspired.

@@thatclassicrockguy9268 because they are session musicians and they end up playing for a lot of different people the guys really love working with Babymetal they get to play it loud and proud. Unlike some of the other work they do. They instead get to go on world tour and visit metal festivals, etc. Boh and Sheenan met at a festival in 2014 where Babymetal performed. I joke Babymetal is sometimes called 'idol metal' (because the girls have an 'idol' background) and their is an other way you could explain that name: the guys involved in Babymetal get to meet all their favorite metal/musicians idols at the festivals, etc. because of touring with Babymetal. 🙂

  • @Grington300
    @Grington300 2 года назад +40

Another excellent reaction, thank you (and if you feel tempted to do more BABYMETAL reactions you'll have a guaranteed audience).
Yes Su-metal is a superstar - now consider she was only just 16 and she only debuted this song the night before. The whole concept was formed and developed around her vocal talents and exceptional stage presence.
This was at the Budokan in Tokyo (think Carnegie Hall or Madison Square Garden for how prestigious this is to Japanese artists as a venue). BABYMETAL were releasing their first album with these shows, they were the youngest ever average age female band to headline there (Su was 16, Yui and Moa were still only 14) and they sold it out two nights running.
There are many different aspects of BABYMETAL, Su-metal's solos are just one of them and they tend to be the more "straight" metal songs.
You will also come across Black BABYMETAL - that is Yuimetal and Moametal performing as a duo without Su and their songs tend to be even heavier instrumentally, but that is contrasted by their sweet and child-like vocals.
What makes BABYMETAL really stand out (and unique) is when you get all three girls performing. When you do watch more songs and performances don't make the mistake of thinking Yui and Moa are just dancers and backing vocals. Watch what they do and listen to their lines, their role is essential in making BABYMETAL what they are.
Their choreo isn't just taken from the grab-bag of dance moves used by most western and other pop artists who have dancers mincing round the stage to give you something to watch. They work with one of Japan's best choreographers and their choreo is bespoke for each song, helping to interpret the meaning of the lyrics or the feel of the song, but more importantly they provide the link between the band and the audience. When they jump, pump their fists or make a certain move the audience follows their lead, they let the audience know what to do and when and it is their lines in songs that the audience will sing along with and join in to become part of the performance.
The staging and production at the Budokan in 2014 was amazing ... but this was just the start in essence, these were the first big shows they did with the Kami Band playing the whole time. Before this the Kami Band, if they were there at all, would only come on for the encores - the Budokan shows marked BABYMETAL striking out in their own right and their first world tour was only announced at the end of the second night.
The production of their big arena shows in Japan has just got more spectacular each time they've played with each show topping the last - but they don't need that to put on great shows. They put every bit as much effort and energy into their shows in smaller venues where there may not be the possibility for pyro, moving stages and so on.
The Kami Band, as you rightly said, are all world class musicians, but even they have said BABYMETAL is the hardest job they've had as the standards are so high and they have to always be at their best to match the professionalism, the hard work and the high standards of the girls themselves.
I really hope we will get to see your reactions to more BABYMETAL songs and performances - and if that doesn't happen hearing what you thought of other songs, the other aspects of what BABYMETAL do etc would be very interesting.
There is a very good guide "Everything you need to know about BABYMETAL" made by CrypticMisery that I think you would also find both interesting and entertaining (and we will watch reactions to that as well - even though it is over 40 minutes long).

If you want to check out a concert 'Metrock 2015' is only 38 minutes long. It was about a year later than Budokan. It's daytime at a festival so there is no production. But the crowd is fantastic and they have great shots of the crowd.
If you want to see the best production then either Tokyo Dome or Legend S. On the reddit there is a spreadsheet with all the concerts. Budokan Black Night is great all around. Or Yokohama 2015. Anything between 2014 and 2018 is fantastic. Or Wembley since it sounds like you're in the UK.
Legend of 1997 was for Su's 16th birthday and they do special performances. But it is very early and the Kami Band was just getting started. The first half of the concert is recorded music. It's great also but the music is not at the level of quality of later shows. But it has really cool stage shows and special songs. The stage show at the end is IMO their second best ever. The best being the opening stage show for Legend S for her 20th birthday in her home province of Hiroshima.

Excellent reaction, bravo! This is definitely one of my favorite Babymetal performances, but there are some that are even better and many that are close to on par with it.
I can't say I blame you for wanting to binge their back catalog, though I'll be sad to not get to experience that journey with you. If you want to watch a full concert, my top picks are Metrock 2015 (aka Tokyo Metropolitan Rock Festival 2015), New Year Fox Festival (aka Legend 2015), and their two back-to-back nights at the Tokyo Dome where they played all the songs from their first two albums. Absolutely incredible shows, though unfortunately none of them available on youtube. If you're on discord, come join the fan server - just click 'add a server', then 'join a server', and type 'babymetal' (no quotes) into the invite link field. The people in the #babymetal-reactions channel will be happy to help you out. If you're not on discord, the r/BABYMETAL subreddit could be helpful too.
If you _do_ want to do more reactions on youtube, I'd suggest checking out the last three songs from the Legend 1997 show - Headbanger, Akatsuki (Unfinished ver.), and Babymetal Death. You actually haven't seen what Babymetal have been for the majority of their history yet, and Headbanger is a great intro to that. Akatstuki is another solo for Su, the lead singer, and the 'Unfinished version' is an acoustic arrangment of it that's very emotional. Then to round it out, Babymetal Death is a stage show the likes of which I've never seen any other band do. It has to be seen to believed! I'll leave some links to the best-quality uploads of each of those in a reply so you can react to them or check them out on your own. Cheers!

Welcome back to the Babymetal "foxhole". Some people have said that, BOH, bass player, has small hands, but I think it's more just the width of the 6 string neck they are noticing.
Here we get The Kami Band doing the "Mischiefs of the Metal Gods" intro with Aoyama Hideki (drums), BOH (6 string bass), Takayoshi Ohmura (7 string gold guitar), Leda Cygnus (blue guitar). They are dressed as spirits of the dead which is significant in BM lore, but let's concentrate on the music for now. RON is one of Su's solos that allow her to show her individual talent and give the other two girls, Moa and Yui, a chance to rest. This concert is Budokan Black Night in 2014 so Su was just 16 years old. I'm always tempted to recommend more BM songs, but this time I'm also going to request that you don't react to a song because you are noticing lots about the structure of the music and this particular song has "lots of music"- don't listen to "Tales of the Destinies" yet, work up to it, and yes, that was meant to intrigue you. Maybe listen to "Road of Resistance Live in japan" or "Headbanger Legend 1997".
RON is a very dark song where Su is chased by something she cannot escape. The repetitive nature of a "rondo" makes this even more frightening and that's explicitly said in the lyrics. I think that the changing time signatures and dissonance of the music are there to make us feel uncomfortable and keep us off balance. The final chorus is as unsettling as the time signatures and offers no happy resolution: (translation thanks to du-metal).
    It flickers slowly
appearing and disappearing in my mind.
A nightmare rondo is being repeated.
    The awakening light
is gone far away out of my sight.
I can do nothing but fall
    into the darkness.
Some reviewers mention that the song ends very abruptly and that it's hard to settle into...the lyrics imply that there's no hope of waking, but that's often what you feel when you are in a nightmare and then you wake as suddenly as the song ends.
If you want DragonForce listen to "Road of Resistance Live in Japan".

Alright mate, that was fantastic. Glad you enjoyed one of the four SuMetal solos, and personally my favorite along with "Akatsuki".
Nothing left to say, you know the business and what you're talking about, and you already got plenty of info about this song in the comments.
Funny you mentioned Billy Sheehan, BOH the bassist admire him.
Is the first time i hear someone comparing this with Within Temptation, I love that band and met them way before BabyMetal ❤️
Be sure to not missed other Kami Band intros, there are rare so i will mention the songs you can find with those intros:
_"Catch Me If You Can"_ live at Budokan 2014 (I already told you where to find that one), the same live concert you saw here
_"YAVA!"_ live at Big Fox Festival 2017 (you can find this one at Babymetal Reactor Resource channel following the links bc isn't upload on YT, I think)
_"Kagerou"_ this is the only one with the West Kami Band live at Legend Metal Galaxy 2020.
There's another prestigious guitarist who sadly past away and is not here in this concert but you will see him on another, Mikio Fujioka, he left us in 2018, dark times because it was the same year YuiMetal left the group.
You can also find Takayoshi Ohmura and Mikio Fujioka-sama exhibition at ESP Guitar US and Japan channel, yep they're top world class elite musicians, why not.
What you read is "Stairway To Living Legend" and that phrase came out kinda recently when the 10 BM years was about to come, this is from 2014 and our queen SuMetal was just recently become a goddess queen during Legend 1997 in 2013. Later, October 2021, a BM song new version of long time loved and dedicated for the fans was released as _"The One - Stairway To Living Legend"_ but that one isn't metal at all, is a piano ballad version, very lovely either way.
And lastly, you mentioned Megadeth, Marty Friedman know the girls, he's living in Japan since a very long time ago, and there's an interview you can find with them, Marty and BabyMetal.
The "Foxhole" is what us, the fans, called the ride into BM songs and wild journey, instead of the usual "rabbit hole", because in BM lore, the Fox God (or Kitsune-sama) send the girls and band to save the world with the metal sound, talking about rabbit... this song first tempting title was "Kill The Alice", yep, is a reference to that.
Waiting for more and I'll be here to enjoy your Foxhole ride.
May the Fox God bless you 🦊🤘

Glad you liked, but you haven't really seen anything yet. You haven't even seen a performance with all three original members! For that, I think a good intro would be _"Road of Resistance",_ live in Japan. It's written as an homage to DragonForce, and they even had Totman and Li play the guitars on the studio version.
If you want something a bit more challenging, maybe try _"Tales of the Destinies",_ where they go full prog. That one is an homage to Dream Theater, or more specifically, a tribute to _"The Dance of Eternity"._
As you continue to explore Babymetal, please try to keep an open mind. You will come across many songs that are more polarizing than the ones you've heard so far, but don't put your guard up right away. Give it a chance. They were very, very young when they started, but the quality of the music is undeniable.
And dude, don't watch any of this stuff without us! Record everything. I'm pretty sure the Babymetal fans would watch a 5 hour video of you just going through the entire catalogue :-)

The Bass player Boh has said he would rather play with Babymetal than anyone else. Being older than the ladies the guys have said if it wasn't for Babymetal they would never have had the exposer that they have now. And thanked Babymetal for the getting to tour the world with them. You just got to watch one of Babymetals darkest songs. The Kawaii was thrown out the window for this song. Su tries to add a little kawaii to it with the dancing she does. But the song is just too spooky for it. Instead, it seems to add to the darkness of it all. Have fun journeying through the Babymetal galaxy of music.

"The waning moon shines bright but there's a gloom of rampant madness. I hear laughter all around. It bares it's fangs and it's eyes gleam. There's no escape. It flickers slowly, appearing and disappearing in my mind. A nightmarish rondo keeps repeating. The light of dawn is so far away I have no choice but to run through the darkness."
Hey Classic Rock Guy! Good reaction! Rondo of Nightmare is a song where Su-metal (lead singer) is being chased by... something. We don't know what it is and we never really find out, however when Su puts her head down and sings softly she's pleading with... whatever it is... to at least show itself before she perishes.
This live version of Rondo of Nightmare is often suggested to newcomers to Babymetal because, as you saw, the "Mischiefs of the Metal Gods" intro showcases the band members. The band is called the "Kami Band". Kami in Japanese means "God" or "Spirit", and the band members are supposed to portray the spiritual incarnations of their respective instruments. Of course, the Japanese love a good pun: "kami" also means "hair", so whether you consider them the "God Band" or the "Hair Band" I'll leave to you!
Rondo of Nightmare is actually one of Babymetal's least played songs, so if you liked this I'm sure you will like many more of their tracks. Always look for live versions if you can as the group considers themselves performers first over being recording artists.

The fearlessness of Su-metal. Think about that, she is on a platform 2 meters wide 2 meters up,
without any safety equipment. Lights on her face, there is no chance that she can see where she is standing.
It's okay if you stand still, but she takes some dance moves and then there are the thing with your mind,
it's playing with you when you know you are on an elevated platform. AND the night before,
Yuimetal fell of the stage (not this elevated platform though) so she must have had that in her mind too.

Another Japanese band you may like is the Wagakki Band. They mix classical and modern with their choice of instruments. Enjoy reactions from people, such as you, who has extensive musical knowledge. I've learned to appreciate music more each time. This is 16 yo Su-metal on the raised platform. Her ability to emote feelings, even for those of us that don't fully understand Japanese, only improved as she matured. Others will provide greater details on the song and performance.
For heavy metal, Babymetal Death, Legend 1997. ruclips.net/video/jRc9dbgiBPI/видео.html The performance is celebrating Su-metal's 16th birthday. David Heretic, a professional musician, melted down four times during his review. (recommend you check the comments for the translation of the opening, it will help understand the performance.) [Not their heaviest song] Oh! #notacult #possiblyacult
You mentioned Dragonforce times 10, then I recommend Road of Resistance, Live in Tokyo ruclips.net/video/zTEYUFgLveY/видео.html Dragonforce was involved with the song. The Kami Band's musicianship is amazing (hard and fast). You'll also witness Babymetal's ability to control a crowd. The girls are very young at the time (Su 17, Yui & Moa 15) and tiny only 5 feet tall +/-. It is Babymetal's battle anthem, it's about forging your own path despite the obstacles, which is how BM became so successful. [BTW Dave Heretic chocked up three times during his review.]
[Note: always watch Babymetal videos until the end, the show is not over even when the singing stops. Also these two videos may get blocked by Amuse, so take precautions]

Good reaction. Until now you have reacted to Distorsión, a song belonging to the third album, which if you listen to it can only be defined as Metal-Fusion, where their music has matured just like them. Rondo belongs to his first album, more childish than the following ones (they were also between 16 and 14 years old, so it is natural that it was). But you still haven't been able to properly react to something that defines this group: their fans. There are, for me, two songs where the symbiosis between the girls and their Fans (called The One) is more accurately reflected:
Road of Resistance Live in Japan (I would put something on it to try to overcome the blocks, because they usually block it as it happens)
    ruclips.net/video/zTEYUFgLveY/видео.html
    and
    Headbangers legend 1997
    ruclips.net/video/QEsOaMbNFww/видео.html
By the way, don't be surprised by any reference to foxes in Babymetal. They are a fundamental part of the mythology of this group: BabyMetal are the chosen ones of the Fox God to save the metal.

Great reaction once again! I hope you will let us take part in the rest of your journey. It would be interesting to see how you react to the rest of their catalogue. Both of the songs you have seen so far are songs I would expect to appeal to the "average" Metal fan. But there's a lot of much more playful and poppy stuff in their catalogue.
If someone had said that to me before I got to know them, I would probably have taken it as a bad thing, but it absolutely isn't. They are weaving all of it so perfectly into the Metal, it's absolutely baffling and refreshingly unique. And the other elements they add like the dancing, the crowd interaction and the smiles take the entertainment value to levels I have never seen anywhere else.
There are two suggestions I'd like to make:
Since you mentioned the high standard of the performance, you might be suprised to learn that that's even taken up a notch with "Road of Resistance" live in Japan. It's another one of the more "standard" Metal songs (with contributions from Dragonforce), but the performance puts pretty much every other band to shame. An audience member cannot get more value for their money. The video is likely to get blocked, though, so you'd have to pause frequently and possibly use a semi-transparent overlay to get a reaction up.
My second suggestion would be "Megitsune". It's one of those more playful songs I mentioned, and in my opinion the one that sums up BABYMETAL the best. You'll see that it's much more than "just" Metal. It's also one of the few cases where I recommend an official music video over a live performance.

Yep, the Kami Band members are world class musicians, the best of the best you can find in Japan. They are incredibly skilled and have years of experience on their own projects as session musicians. And the funny thing is that they have told on interviews (specifically BOH, the bassist) that they always have to give their 100% just to match the girls standards and not to seem lazy. Also that this is the most demanding work on their entire career. Apparently the girls are very demanding with themselves and their team. Fortunately, they have the best team possible :)

@@thatclassicrockguy9268 No problem! some of the official MV from their channel gets usually blocked, and that includes: "Megitsune", "Gimme Chocolate", "Karate", "Road of Resistance" live in Japan, "No Rain No Rainbow" live at Legend S, and "The One - Stairway to Living Legends"

Believe me, this song is not the most amazing (objectively) in their repertoire. 🦊
I'll be watching with interest as you continue to discover this group.
Just do not go on about us in your opinion about their songs. 😉

If you are just getting into Japanese Rock/Metal, fasten your seatbelt. Most your "guitar heroes" are going down a notch. Right now the best rock/metal music is coming out of Japan AND it is mostly by All Female bands!! There are 200+ bands in Japan now, so you will need to pick up the pace.

Usually it's impossible to be neutral on Babymetal. But you are some of rare man that gives pretty objective opinion about them.😂😄🤘🏻

Based on your name, if you really love classic rock, then you need to go check out Band-Maid. Try Domination. You won't be sorry. Nice reaction as always :)
