This review was pretty bad. Music is purely up to opinion. I can't get enough of the soundtrack. Not since January when I started P3. Sounds to me like he didn't pay attention to the story which is required in all Atlus games. You have to like dungeon crawlers and the trademark negotiations to enjoy this game.
The negotiation system in P1 is crap and the story is mediocre. The best part of the story is when the retarded main villain dies in the 3/4 mark. Fuck getting your level average up to get cards.
CommentSection Barbarian I feel like Eternal Punishment's negotiation system was worse. I mean, you don't get a new Persona right away. Oh no, you have to use points to BUY a Persona.
Giordan Diodato For the first few dungeons it's obnoxious but during a mid-late dungeon getting free cards is easy. So, where in P1 it's harder to get cards later. P2 it's harder to get cards earlier. Personally prefer P2.
The pop music never fit the game. Look up the PSX version. Persona 1 and 2 had a very different mood to 3 and beyond. It's very justifiable to bash the music because it's really out of place in this remaster.
@weichiang hey yeah i was wondering , if you got the time, would you recommend any of the new final fantasy games? they don't really grab my attention. like are the stories any good or is it the same thing over and over? The latest final fantasy game i got to play was X ha so im kinda behind
This game has the best soundtrack in the series!!! This is also my favorite game in the megaten series. It has the best negotiation system and the battle system is awesome!!
The music seems fine mark. Actually that means nothing coming from me, because I love anime, and the opening japanese music played in them.....The battle music is catchy. Unless its the same song over and over again...I think I would understand. But is it? OR does it choose a different song?
A quick question I just bought "Persona 3 FES" for my ps2 and my question is "do I need the original game to play it" ot is both the original and expansion in one disc?
Great review, though I did find the music catchy haha I'm a huge fan of Persona 3 and Persona 4 on ps2, perhaps you should give them a review as well? Anyways, I'm definitely getting this if I ever get a psp, again great review!
I tried Imagine a while ago and couldn't stand it, it had absolutely nothing to hook me and made a cheap, glitchy impression. What do you like about it? I play Phantasy Star Online and Rappelz though, but i can't say i'm too addicted.
hey do u tink i shld get this game? because i did not play all his previous series , this will be the first series i will be playing , please pm me if i should get this because i am afraid it would be confusing to understand the story line
Yes. you can try using Romote Joy for your PC (need Custom Firmware) or if you have a 2000 series or higher, you can buy the Component Cables at Best Buy/Gamestop/ where ever you buy your electronics.
Man, I was hoping they would've updated this to be more like P3 or P4. I was looking forward to this too, oh well, looks like I'll just wait for Persona 3 Portable to come out for some SMT on the PSP. By the way, what's up with Mark? Wasn't he black in the original game?
I love this version, is Persona4ized to be more friendly user, just like every other Persona port on the PSP (except for P2 which is more a direct port). I really like Persona 4 no matter how big of a fan I am of the Shin Megami Tensei main series. Persona is just a different series and there is not much sense in comparizing the two saying that Persona is too easy or whatever. Oh yeah, I'm loving the way you say Shin "Megame" Tensei haha.
Really? When were those made? This game was the first I'd ever seen an ATLUS game. I also didn't hear of the SMT series until much later when ATLUS was "more well known." When was the first one? I am re-playing Persona right now and if the SMT series is as good I may have to try one.
@Jiyaijo I'm about to start this one up. Persona 3 and 4 got me reinterested in the series althought they are a good deal different. I recently played Persona 2 that I had collecting dust for awhile and loved every minute of it. P1 looks to be similar. I would love to see Persona 2 Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment remade on PSP.
This is a re-release of the original Persona game. The original release was on the PS1. It was meant to be complex and it has an amazing story line. It is old school so if you aren't into that you won't like it (and will miss out on how truly cool this game is).
Eh, the music would fit if the combat wasn't as slow as it is. J-pop is really much better for fast-paced combat and it doesn't help that there's only one common fighting theme. All in all I like it but I can understand how you might not.
@shadowg3 I haven't played the game myself, the only SMT games I have are Devil Survivor, Devil Survivor Overclocked, P3 and P4...I should probably check out this version and see if the music's that bad...
I bought this game for my birthday which was last month. I love the music for it because it's much different from the others for the later games. ALSO, my god did he ever bad mouth this remake. I have played Devil Summoner and P3, I will admit that the interaction in those games are better but those are LATER models of the game. I have never played the first one and seeing it like this has made a huge impact on me. If you don't like the music, don't turn the volume on. It's simple.
@disgaea21 You mean you played the two Devil Survivor games on DS? Strange Journey on the DS has this same first-person Wizardry-styled perspective. Both the Persona series and the Devil Survivor series are spin-offs, fyi. The main series, Shin Megami Tensei, has always used this first-person perspective with the exception of the third on PS2, SMT: Nocturne. SMT: Strange Journey DS took it back to the old style, though that was on the DS.
O_o how I had no idea Persona was that old. I thought that first one that came out on the Advance(I think) was a reboot of an older Shin Megami Tensei game but I really didn't know about it. I never got the chance to play any Shin Megami Tensei games outside the free MMO that they have out now.
I would kinda like to recommend Persona 3 and Persona 4 for you, Mark. They are similar to this game (obviously, because they are the sequels), but MUCH more polished, fleshed out, and overall much better games. Although, you might have the same complaints about the music as you do for this game. I'd still like to give this game a try because I love Persona and SMT.
mendozajhons I have played partway into both, but only after i had already beaten 3 and 4, I think that make me more biased toward the newer games, i just cant enjoy the first two in the series.
Actually persona 1 and 2 has way better battle system than persona3 or 4, because has a lot more strategies avaiable with different combinations and isnt as simple as P3 or 4
Sergio Ramos But story-wise, i felt Persona 3 and 4 did far better. I will admit the battles felt kinda generic, save for boss and some unique encounters though.
I can tell that Persona 1 is more deeply rooted in the main series than the newer ones. First person dungeons, enemies are "demons", etc. The ones after that though, it looks like the P2 duology started to step away from the main series, and 3 and 4 deviated entirely, becoming their own special beast. I do know that P3 was the one that made the Persona series and indeed the entire SMT series finally reach popularity here in the states.
Yeah I was playing that game yesterday (Nocturne) it is. So Mark didn't like this? He seemed to like Devil Survivor and Devil Summoner 2 anyway. I loved Persona all of them 1 to 4.
This game was a real travisty to the origional Revelations: Persona release for the playstation 1. Granted i'm sure it followed the story line, but the origional hade a more dynamic feel to it as the summonings were a bit more played out and by far the biggest difference was the soundtrack. It wasn't any of this barbie bubblegum pop music by any means, I'd say the ORGIONAL music actually helped to captivate the feel for this game.
Hey!!! I loved DemiKids(Devil Children). Devil Survivor is also actually very good. Devil Summoner Raidou 1 and 2 doesn't seem to be all that fun, but at least Devil Summoner 1 and Soul Hackers are good games and they are in the same series.
Are you serious? I love your reviews, man, but the music in the game, and the whole Perona series for that matter, is excellent. Its one of the main selling points for me.
Did you know you could press start and skip the animations to make battles go faster. If you wanna find the most 'classic' Persona game, I would review Persona 2 (Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment, two difference games) for PS1. It's the only one that hasn't been remade and the one that is widely considered the best. You'll like it if you like classic style rpgs that aren't too different.
@Jiyaijo Yes sadly, I was just saying that you can't compare a newer sequel if its better, but if one isn't thats the fault of the devloper, I'm just saying that in this case it isn't fair to compare backwards like that D:
This game is probably set in stone as my fave RPG. The 1st chance I got to play it was this PSP port, and it really enlightened me on how stripped down the series has become. The battles that took place on a functional battlefield were such a breath of fresh air to me, words can barely describe it. Also the story, characters and designs are great and really show what Okada and Kaneko were capable of as a team. And okay, I'll stop wanking now. I believe that's about all I've wanted to say. Peace!
persona games look amazing but I've already beaten SMT lucifer's call and Digital devil saga in the shin megami tensei series. the game looks great but I'm to busy with other games I'm gonna have to put this on the wait list
Dude, why are you expecting new and innovative gameplay from a game that is a almost direct port of a game that was made in like 1996? Though I don't recall the J-pop music in the PSX one.
1992 and 1994, both for the super famicon (snes), you could probably get them on wii virtual console if you really wanna play them, ill warn you though, they are the definition of old school rpgs
Thank you! Persona 3 was alright and I've never beat Persona 4, but of all the SMT games, I really like Nocturne (thought it's hard and I have yet to beat it), loved DDS (despite it taking forever to master all the mantras), and Devil Summoner is loads of fun. I think people just enjoy the Social Links and general Anime J-pop zaniness that Persona 3 and 4 have. I come to enjoy dark, thought provoking stories, not a high school/ dating simulation.
Persona 4 golden got me into it. After that i bought dancing all night. After that i dug out my psp from wherever the hell it was and bought persona 1,2 and 3. cant wait to play them
@Jiyaijo I'd like to see both persona 2's released, only one of them was released in english x.x also, this is a remake a an old game, pretty old, -_- , and its not related to the other smt games, every spin off works on its own in this series
I'd like to say that I LOVE Persona music. Now, when I buy Persona game, I expect wonderful music. Persona 1 has great music, it's just not as fitting. Persona has a great soundtrack, but the problem is that unlike Persona 3's soundtrack, it gets kinda ear grading. J-pop is annoying, and the Persona 4 soundtrack is the closest thing to it that I can deal with. And Persona 3.... ugnhhhh! It makes me tight in the pants! Persona 3 has my favorite RPG ost ever! And my third favorite ost. Right behind Sonic Unleashed and rally every other Sonic game.
Geez it's just too bad I didn't come to watch a review of other Shin Megami Tensei games. Although your simplistic cliff note overview DOES lend insight to many of your other reviews. Also, it was not "brought over from Japan to the U.S. market." It's a re-make of a classic PS1 RPG from 1995. Persona was Shin Megami Tensei before Shin Megami Tensei WAS. This is one of the games that "launched" the then fledgling ATLUS! It defines classic! I'm sorry what was the name of your show again?
The only thing I totally didn't agree with is that negotiating isn't boring, heh it's awesome and so fun. I haven't played this port, but I played the original and both Persona 2's some. I liked the negotiation system a lot. The J-pop isn't for everyone so it didn't bother me much that he didn't like it.
Great review as always, but frankly I disagree with most of Mark's criticisms. I played the first Persona game on the original PlayStation, and loved it. This game is set up in very much the same vein as that original Persona title. True, the characters don't move around much in battle; and yes, the battle sequences take some time. But, the rewards from figuring out how to negotiate properly with the enemies can be very rich indeed. Also, I love the square-shaped grid style of mapping.
The Japanese pop music is a fan favorite part of the PERSONA games.
Xavier Sejour I am a fan of Japanese music in general. To hear it in this game is just plain AWESOME!
It is VERY hard to go back and play Persona 1 and 2 after playing Persona 3 and 4.
Thats why i am playing this games first.
P1 yeah. P2 IS is easy as cake. P2 EP is nice balance between old and new.
Nah
The music is the sole reason I'm buying this game.
Why would you turn off the music...
This review was pretty bad. Music is purely up to opinion. I can't get enough of the soundtrack. Not since January when I started P3.
Sounds to me like he didn't pay attention to the story which is required in all Atlus games. You have to like dungeon crawlers and the trademark negotiations to enjoy this game.
yeah he probably wasn't the best option for reviewing it.

The pop music never fit the game. Look up the PSX version. Persona 1 and 2 had a very different mood to 3 and beyond. It's very justifiable to bash the music because it's really out of place in this remaster.
dude you just tore into this game when it isnt even a SRPG its a turn based rpg dungeon crawler.....jeeez its not even like front mission lol
+Christopher Harvell It makes you wonder if he has played any turn based RPG like Final Fantasy prior to this review
The music is fucking amazing. It's just not as good as the 3 or godly 4 soundtrack.
i know i'm late but Yeh Persona 4 had the BES VIDEO GAME SOUNDTRACK of ALL TIME
@weichiang hey yeah i was wondering , if you got the time, would you recommend any of the new final fantasy games? they don't really grab my attention. like are the stories any good or is it the same thing over and over? The latest final fantasy game i got to play was X ha so im kinda behind
I did like this game, but it really made me appreciate how far Persona 3 & 4 has come.
@Jiyaijo
the'r farther up the numbering, it would be strange if there was no improvement right?
when he talked about the music a manly tear fell from my eye :'(
Love your reviews and the informative/fun presentation. Subscribed. Looking forward to more from you. Keep em coming!
K, I have to know what are the 3 songs playing in the intro? Specifically tune #2 and #3.
This game has the best soundtrack in the series!!! This is also my favorite game in the megaten series. It has the best negotiation system and the battle system is awesome!!
You're high
Persona 4: Golden is one of the greatest games I've ever played.
casual
+KAZ NO!
+Chr15Andr3w It's good, but nowhere close to greatest... but that could be me.
Chr15Andr3w I hate chie's new voice actor.
Play SMT IV. That’s way better for a beginner in Mega-Ten community
I love the soundtrack to this game.
Persona games have some of the best music ever. I am still listening to the soundtrack to 3 and 4.
@FFFan3445 Have you played Persona 3 (FES version) or Persona 4?
I remember playing this for the playstation, it was awesome, shows how far the series has gone today ;D
how do you get really good quality with you videos
The music seems fine mark. Actually that means nothing coming from me, because I love anime, and the opening japanese music played in them.....The battle music is catchy. Unless its the same song over and over again...I think I would understand. But is it? OR does it choose a different song?
Great review of an underrated game as always mark! Can't wait to watch again in HD though. Stupid youtube takes too long to process =[
A quick question I just bought "Persona 3 FES" for my ps2 and my question is "do I need the original game to play it" ot is both the original and expansion in one disc?
could u recommend some other game? Or games? What are your favourite psp games?
Great review, though I did find the music catchy haha
I'm a huge fan of Persona 3 and Persona 4 on ps2, perhaps you should give them a review as well? Anyways, I'm definitely getting this if I ever get a psp, again great review!
It's true. Persona is okay on the PSP, but it's still not as great as other entries in the SMT games.
...but I DO like the music.
so how do you off the music? I just wanna hear the sound fx
Why is this channel called 80s comics? I'm so lost, thought it was CGR?
I tried Imagine a while ago and couldn't stand it, it had absolutely nothing to hook me and made a cheap, glitchy impression. What do you like about it?
I play Phantasy Star Online and Rappelz though, but i can't say i'm too addicted.
hey do u tink i shld get this game? because i did not play all his previous series , this will be the first series i will be playing , please pm me if i should get this because i am afraid it would be confusing to understand the story line
Yes. you can try using Romote Joy for your PC (need Custom Firmware) or if you have a 2000 series or higher, you can buy the Component Cables at Best Buy/Gamestop/ where ever you buy your electronics.
is this a complete port with no changes?or a remake?
Man, I was hoping they would've updated this to be more like P3 or P4. I was looking forward to this too, oh well, looks like I'll just wait for Persona 3 Portable to come out for some SMT on the PSP. By the way, what's up with Mark? Wasn't he black in the original game?
Which ones did you play?
is there a european release date for this yet? D:
From everything I heard in this video, the music in this game sounds awesome. Difference of opinions though.
i loved the music, it is such an important apect in smt series.
wait, i thought this game doesnt come out till the 22nd? how did you review it
i did think it was a great review, though.
@Bukkarooo
who would, if their new to the series?
Wait, what? How did you get this game? It doesnt come out till the 22nd!!!^_^
I stand corrected, looking at my iPod at the moment. "Crystal Defenders - Vangaurd Storm" by Square Enix.
I love the music...
I love this version, is Persona4ized to be more friendly user, just like every other Persona port on the PSP (except for P2 which is more a direct port). eh!? how they manage to get a copy? at my gamestop they say its coming out at 9/22/09 what does that mean? how did they get it faster?.
Seems you got a little typo in the title. Magami instead of Megami. Great video! :-)
This is a re-release of the original Persona game. The original release was on the PS1. It was meant to be complex and it has an amazing story line. It is old school so if you aren't into that you won't like it (and will miss out on how truly cool this game is).
is the main character guy from persona 1 - 4 all the same or what?
Eh, the music would fit if the combat wasn't as slow as it is. J-pop is really much better for fast-paced combat and it doesn't help that there's only one common fighting theme. All in all I like it but I can understand how you might not.
@shadowg3 I haven't played the game myself, the only SMT games I have are Devil Survivor, Devil Survivor Overclocked, P3 and P4...I should probably check out this version and see if the music's that bad...
living for the music. i think it fits because its contemporary japan and these teens are battling like anime characters that they watch on tv.
You need to do Persona 3 and 4, and SMT: Nocturne on the PS2. The SMT games you haven't reviewed are the best ones!
Never played a Persona game... Are they good?
I bought this game for my birthday which was last month. I love the music for it because it's much different from the others for the later games. ALSO, my god did he ever bad mouth this remake. I have played Devil Summoner and P3, I will admit that the interaction in those games are better but those are LATER models of the game. I have never played the first one and seeing it like this has made a huge impact on me. If you don't like the music, don't turn the volume on. It's simple.
@disgaea21 You mean you played the two Devil Survivor games on DS? Strange Journey on the DS has this same first-person Wizardry-styled perspective. I never got the chance to play any Shin Megami Tensei games outside the free MMO that they have out now.
you guys should do a review of lunar silver star harmony for psp, that game is awesome
wait which version of persona 1? Revelations? or the original JP version because revelations is just no
I love the music in this game...
As always still has awesome music
I would kinda like to recommend Persona 3 and Persona 4 for you, Mark. They are similar to this game (obviously, because they are the sequels), but MUCH more polished, fleshed out, and overall much better games. Although, you might have the same complaints about the music as you do for this game. I'd still like to give this game a try because I love Persona and SMT.
I forgot to mention CGR looks like they didn't review persona:revelation/megami ibunroku persona on the PsOne!
i would reccommend 3 or 4 over 1 and 2. P3 Portable and P4 Golden have amazing music and better combat and story
Have you at least played Persona 1 or the Persona 2 games?
mendozajhons I have played partway into both, but only after i had already beaten 3 and 4, I think that make me more biased toward the newer games, i just cant enjoy the first two in the series.
* first three in the series*
I suppose it's a matter of opinions :1
@BenJKrauser Persona 1 had it flaws but it is worth to check out the PSP version because many things has been improved comared to the PSone version
When you're forced to listen to the same tracks over and over, it's amazing how some people don't go insane.
Yeah I was playing that game yesterday (Nocturne) it is.
So Mark didn't like this? He seemed to like Devil Survivor and Devil Summoner 2 anyway. I loved Persona all of them 1 to 4.
oh now he's talking about the text fonts I just cannot wait..... what's next you don't like one of the floor tiles
no, both games come in the disc you bought... unless you got the japanese version
@duketogo1300 You mind explaining a bit more about that. I always get confused when people explain this...
This game was a real travisty to the origional Revelations: Persona release for the playstation 1. Hey!!!
I loved DemiKids(Devil Children).
Devil Survivor is also actually very good.
Devil Summoner Raidou 1 and 2 doesn't seem to be all that fun, but at least Devil Summoner 1 and Soul Hackers are good games and they are in the same series.
is this game really good? :( I kinda want it, but i dunno. It'll be my first persona game.
im about to search the lyrics for the song. i have no idea what they are saying
Are you serious? I love your reviews, man, but the music in the game, and the whole Perona series for that matter, is excellent. Its one of the main selling points for me.
i like the music :D

You should try the first Devil Summoner game on Sega Saturn.
If you have either the PSP-2000, PSP-3000 or PSP Go models and an HDTV, yes
persona games look amazing but I've already beaten SMT lucifer's call and Digital devil saga in the shin megami tensei series.
the game looks great but I'm to busy with other games I'm gonna have to put this on the wait list
I would suggest playing Persona 4 or Nocturne if you haven't already.
This is an old game, in not too bad, it just how games used to be back in the ps1 days.

Thank you! The music is so great in this game. Revelations Persona had a more fitting soundtrack but I simply prefer this soundtrack just for the catchy music.
Persona 4 golden got me into it. After that i bought dancing all night. After that i dug out my psp from wherever the hell it was and bought persona 1,2 and 3. cant wait to play them
You said it doesn't compare with the quality and depth of the DS library...
@Jiyaijo
I'd like to see both persona 2's released, only one of them was released in english x.x
also, this is a remake a an old game, pretty old, -_- , and its not related to the other smt games, every spin off works on its own in this series
I'd like to say that I LOVE Persona music. Now, when I buy Persona game, I expect wonderful music. Persona 1 has great music, it's just not as fitting. I'm fine with the music. It's kinda catchy.
This game is really good guys.
Well this gane make you ready to play Persona 2 a master pice in history and characters
