When you have a demon in party you don't need to kill an enemy of the same species. Just talk to them. They'll just leave and sometimes they could give you money or items. So excited for this. Bought it Day -7. :P Being after Midnight Eastern time, that was technically yesterday, now. Already pre-downloaded. Seeing it in the Home Menu of my Switch now is such a tease...
Nice review but you gotta learn to let yourself breath. You can't mention the music being good and then give approximately a 1.5 second clip of the music before resuming the review. Same for cut-ins between voice and gameplay. Breath a little, let things sit for longer than a second or two.
The last mainline entry was SMT IV Apocalypse aka SMT IV Final in japan, which was released in like 2017 or something. Not 8 years ago like SMT IV @ 0:30
Games like this, Fire Emblem, Zelda and others are what really set the Switch apart from the others. Returned my Xbox Series S to get a Switch because there are just more interesting games IMO. Switch sales say others would seem to agree.
I bought my switch last week just for this game. I bought a couple others games, but smtv is the one i want most. Anyway, amazing review! You demolished ign's review by a long shot.
I haven't played SMT before and I was pulled into the genre because of Persona 5. I am curious to know whether or not SMT V or SMT series in general is more combat focussed than Persona? This review didn't contain a lot of things about the Protagonist's school life. Did the reviewers do that to avoid spoilers or is SMT V focussed less on that than the Persona games? I'd love to know more about this. Thanks in Advance :)
It is more combat focused, and the cast is more focused on survival and each of them has ideologies which make them their own character No dating or social link if that is what you're looking for. It is a series that takes their character and story more seriously
@@TruePeaceSeeker Yeah I had a feeling that there may not be social links considering your squad is Demons instead of actual other people. I am okay with no dating stuff either. I really enjoyed being able to roam around in the normal city from time to time, like a relaxing reprieve if you will, between the fighting. From what I am seeing the cast is more about bringing in more ideas driving towards the story and giving you more information about the world. But this is all good to know. Thanks :)
I scored a steelbook edition on ebay for $20 😎 I’m 20 hours in and just beat Mother Goddess Nuwa. I can already tell I’m going to love this game. This should keep me busy until LOZ ToTK 🤘🏾
Awesome review, light years better than IGN’s abysmal one. My only concern is performance. As long as it runs better on UE4 than SMTIII did on unity I’ll be content. If I recall Dragon Quest 11 also runs on UE4 and it runs well enough on switch so I’d expect SMTV to also run decently. 30fps is definitely enough for a game like this where fast reflexes usually aren’t a requirement over thoughtful strategies in battle. Not that I’d be opposed to it eventually getting published on other platforms where they can really crank out UE4’s rather nice graphical capabilities. One day, perhaps but for now I’ll definitely be enjoying it on my switch on launch day🤘
@@_-Lx-_ i was mostly joking lol, i have been disappointed by games of series i love ( _cough_ Sonic 06 _cough_ ) but this game looks rlly great so i wanna be optimistic
I find your review ok but why everyone has to say the social bonds with characters as requirement because it was in Persona 5 or Xenoblade Chronicles 2 like you just said? RPGs don't need this social bonds thing to be a rpg but it is something people are expecting lately in games which is stupid.
As it was in 4 and 3 to. The first 3 no. People know you don't need social links. People however like them. As it gives more play time and character growth. As it plays into the game mechanics/system. As this creates in part to the chaos, law, neutral system. Choices. As social links are. Social links aren't in most of games. Not the majority.
Regarding the difficulty... on a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being very easy, 10 being very hard), where would you place SMT 5 on Normal and Hard difficulty? As a personal reference point, I'd say Persona 5 Royal (Hard) is a 3, while Persona 5 (Hard) is a 5.
@@jeromealday614 I actually haven't played a 10 yet. But I would say Tales of Arise (Normal) might be a 6 or 7. That's the hardest one I've played the last few years. Or maybe the Zelda BotW DLC Trial of the Sword, that I would say is a 7. Hard to say, really. Because different people have different strengths and weaknesses (just like demons). I have pretty good analytical skills, but my reflexes have become a bit rusted over the years.
@@Rajin90 IGN said it was hard which makes sense for SMT so I’m going to say at least and 8, probably in the range of 8-10. Also before I get trashed for quoting IGN, you honestly believe SMT V is not going to be hard. I get we don’t like IGN but let’s not be ignore facts
@@marcar9marcar972 I mean if 4 and 4:A are anything to go off, I'm feeling a 7. After Naraku and Medusa specifically, 4 just kept getting easier and easier to the point the end game was a joke and the only way I could possibly die wasn't from bad play, but just lucky crits/ambushes.
RUclips is basically a bunch of people bashing a Reviewer for not saying what they wanted to hear and praising a Reviewer for saying what they wanted to hear almost as if they've forgotten the fact that Reviews are only somebody's opinion. Why watch IGN if the only thing you're going to do is belittle them afterwards just because they might not like something you do? the RUclips Community is so immature.
Because ign's review is just garbage. Instead of comparing the game to SMT IV or Apocalypse they compared it with Persona 5. They act like if you're a fan of one then you're a fan of the other which is just not the case.
Sadly I couldn't play this until after my exams. I am excited to see how Fiend hunting is handled in this game. The fiends were always the fun superbosses to hunt down in SMT.
Regarding the Demons that you can have, are most actually "usefull" until late game? I don't want to get specific OP one's just to be able to finish end game.. I am interested in SMT5 yet i never played a SMT or Persona game before, would that be a problem with lore etc..?
Lorewise: Do not worry. SMT and Persona are known to not being direct sequels of its predecessors. As about demons: the fusion system means you probably be fusing and changing demons often. They are all useful in certain parts of the game because in SMT (and Persona too) weakness/resistance are SUPER important. But be wary: diferent from Pokémon, for exemple, in SMT you probably can't pick an early game demon and grind it to endgame. Its about the game design, really. You are not meant to do it. You are meant to fuse a lot and change a lot. For clarification: I just bought SMTV but played SMTIV and P3, P4 and P5, but I really think my answer will be valid for this one aw.
From what I seen, it doesn’t really feel like the game will let you keep one demon for too long, I noticed after a time it feels like they level up too slow, although that does encourage fusing and whatnot (although it can suck sometimes when there’s a demon I really like but they’re too under leveled), also from my knowledge the games aren’t connected
will we be able to play the game with japanese voice over & english subs, aka the only way to play japanese games? please include source with your answer.
Spoils many mechanics of the game but nothing story wise. Avoid ign review completely. Give this one a like and go dislike the ign one. We need to make it clear what is the proper way to review a game.
This game does not offer slice of life like p5. There is less comedy and overall less story/cutscenes.. BUT, to make up for this the mechanics are better and gameplay overall improved… If you like your social links and enjoy charcter tropes id stay with persona.
You could legit go 6 or 7 hours without even hitting a plot point tbh Less character interactions, way less things to do. The combat system is very fun though, 76 hours in and I'm enjoying the combat and surprisingly the world
Great show, Zion! This game looks entertaining. Reminds me of the Persona games! I am right now playing Persona 4 Golden, a bit much dialogue though. I am giving this video a 9 of 10!

Why do you still watch their reviews when you know well that they aren't good? You know they're not good, right? Or is this your 1st time realizing that?
Kind of a weird take. The demons are mostly based on actual religions and mythologies, so there's not much they can do other than redesigning them, which they apparently did.
I still want to play SMT IV Apocalypse on 3DS, haven't found it at all, but i also want this, i'm a little thight on money though, got Dread and that's the only game this year i have payed the full $100 price that games cost here. That way it won't be repetitive since you'll get away from battles faster. You don't need to be that rude in every video game, less in this game where you don't need to grind. Go pacifist!
I’m wondering if they implemented HD rumble
I bought my switch last week just for this game. I bought a couple others games, but smtv is the one i want most. Anyway, amazing review! You demolished ign's review by a long shot.
Omgggg I can’t wait!!!! Looks like I’ll be getting up early on release day to play this before work. 😂
It is more combat focused, and the cast is more focused on survival and each of them has ideologies which make them their own character
No dating or social link if that is what you're looking for.
Thanks :)
Awesome, I was debating on putting this on my Christmas list. Thank you for helping decide!
Didn't mention that spinoff series once 👍
I scored a steelbook edition on ebay for $20 😎 I’m 20 hours in and just beat Mother Goddess Nuwa. I can already tell I’m going to love this game. This should keep me busy until LOZ ToTK 🤘🏾
Nice, an actual review focusing on the game itself
Is the story and characters good?. This would be my first SMT game and I didn't like Persona 5 but loved Persona 2. Is this game worth it?.
One day, perhaps but for now I’ll definitely be enjoying it on my switch on launch day🤘
A French video game review site said that the performance is OK for the most of the time, but it freeze a little bit when we are in this open areas
Amazing review. Saw many others. This is the first time I understood what kind of game this is.
it’s shin megami tensei, idc what it’s like i want it
Facts!
I mean the game looks great but that's a terrible mentality.
That's the kinda mindset that lead to messes like PKMN-SWSH.
@@_-Lx-_ i was mostly joking lol, i have been disappointed by games of series i love ( _cough_ Sonic 06 _cough_ ) but this game looks rlly great so i wanna be optimistic
Love this review. I actually ended up playing this game twice just for the endings Bc I forgot to save at a certain point… 😅
I've barely played the series before, but this one looks intriguing. Will I be able to enjoy the story if this is my jumping-on point?
Yep. This like Persona and FF, each game is standalone. While Smt4 Apocalipse, requires that either played or know the Smt4 story.
@@Pduarte79 Thanks for letting me know. :)
@@Thepopcornator
You are welcome.
Yeah basically just go punch demons/gods in the face. Have fun.
Yes
I preordered it months ago, excited to play it after i complete the game I’m playing now.
I'm scared to ask what's your 10 😖
@@jeromealday614 I actually haven't played a 10 yet.
And too bad it's near FFXIV expansion, endwalker D: ugh. I'll buy this and shelf it in my backlog ;-; along with advance wars and wargroove.
Advance Wars was delayed
I’m sure the main story to Endwalker will not exceed 2 weeks (apart from leveling Sage & Reaper to 90).
@@_CNT_ I know, I mean old school AW. Which is what is going to be remade. Would be interesting to play both though.
@@hickknight oh sorry, I thought you meant the remake, since it was supposed to come out next month if I remember correctly
Best Review out of 10 others I watched. You weren’t bias or off putting. Just honest and insightful. Def getting this game now.
Will switch fans stop complaing about wanting Persona 5 now? Will this keep them happy in the long run? Find out next week on DRAGON...BALL...Z!
A worldwide release from Atlus?
What timeline is this?
Got my OLED today. Got SMT5 preordered. Let's goooooooooooooo
I only have a Switch lite
@@BitchChill I actually love the lite!
Thank you for reviewing this as a SMT game and not some "Persona spin-off" which we really know it is not. :D
will we be able to play the game with japanese voice over & english subs, aka the only way to play japanese games?
please include source with your answer.
yes.
source: trust me bro
Had to stop this reviee a minute into the video. I've been waiting for this game so long i don't want any spoilers at all
He didn’t spoil a thing though
You're safe, no spoilers
Spoils many mechanics of the game but nothing story wise. Avoid ign review completely. Give this one a like and go dislike the ign one. We need to make it clear what is the proper way to review a game.
@@HoudiniFontmeister That's just cringe.
*Ive never played SMT but i played Persona 5 and absolutely loved it. would y’all recommend this game for someone who never played it?*
This game does not offer slice of life like p5. There is less comedy and overall less story/cutscenes.. BUT, to make up for this the mechanics are better and gameplay overall improved… If you like your social links and enjoy charcter tropes id stay with persona.
You could legit go 6 or 7 hours without even hitting a plot point tbh
Less character interactions, way less things to do. The combat system is very fun though, 76 hours in and I'm enjoying the combat and surprisingly the world
Put simply, if you liked Persona 5 for the story and having well developed characters, absolutely not
Just take my money already
Great show, Zion! This game looks entertaining. Reminds me of the Persona games! I am right now playing Persona 4 Golden, a bit much dialogue though. I am giving this video a 9 of 10!
time atlus release persona 5 sigma edition for nintendo switch
I bought a switch while i was in Japan back in 2018 in anticipation of this game and it lives up to the hype imo. Can’t get enough of it.
this game took me by surprise by how good it is. Also, straight to the point, systems, battles etc everything is well built and works well. Really a good RPG for people who like me find Persona 5 way too ''teen''.
Finally someone who Knows about what he is talking about. A shin Megami Tensei Tittle!! 8 years since the last entry... In japan they are loving it, those are BIG words!! Nice review... i came here after watch the IGN Not PS5 review.... and gladly hear someone who knows what a SMT tittle is about ;)
This review is like a cleansing rain that washes away the filth that is IGN's and Gamespot's reviews.
Why do you still watch their reviews when you know well that they aren't good? You know they're not good, right? Or is this your 1st time realizing that?
@@Noid1220 I watched them because I heard they were bad, and saw some memes about them. I got curious and wanted to see full context.
@@Arexion5293 so I'm pretty sure you're not gonna watch any of their videos anymore, right?
@@Noid1220 I might. I occasionally check what sort of bad reviews they've made.
@@Arexion5293 i see. Good for you.
I put off playing this for a while but I've finally ordered it for my holidays. I'm looking forward to it
How is it? I thought about buying since it’s cheap now
I just wish I hadn’t seen literally all of these demons before in every previous game of this series. Totally deflates the hype for me 😭
Kind of a weird take. The demons are mostly based on actual religions and mythologies, so there's not much they can do other than redesigning them, which they apparently did.
Great original review and excellent video presentation. Thanks!
Better than the ign review
Agreed
Being better than IGN isn't exactly a hard bar to top.
I still want to play SMT IV Apocalypse on 3DS, haven't found it at all, but i also want this, i'm a little thight on money though, got Dread and that's the only game this year i have payed the full $100 price that games cost here.
I'll get this one eventually, i really want to collect for 3DS now, Switch will be later.
IGN's review was so trash that as a longtime fan of SMT i was so happy to see other reviews that dont jsut fucking compare it to Persona 5. This game needs to sell well and be recieved well for us to keep getting smt games.
Great review as always guys! Thank you for covering my most anticipated game ever.
Also, I believe its spelled with a sounding H, like in Japanese or English, MagatsuHi as in Hiccup. NaHobino as in Hole (or Heee Hoooo)
Crazy that they managed to only mention persona 5 once in the whole review
Exactly what I was hoping for! I played SMT3 and loved it. Can't wait for this!
Godhood awaits go claim it
I’m just being introduced to this series of games and I’m a little confused because I just started playing person 5 strikers and I swear some of the Personas look exactly like some of the demons in this game. So I have a question is this game connected to the persona universe? A answer would be appreciated
Persona is a spin off of shin Megami Tensei and they share designs for demons/personas. Due to it.
Shin Megami Tensei is the main series, Persona is the spin off
They share monsters and several gameplay mechanics and also some themes. Atlus are notoriously loose with their canon though lol. There are no plot or worldbuilding connections.
