  • In this video we talk about our lobstering experiences in South Florida and the upper Keys, especially Key Largo. Over the years we have learned a lot, and we wanted to share some tips and tricks for people new to the area.
    Some of our tips are:
    1. Follow the rules! FWC is very active during mini season and the first few days of opening season. Be sure to use a dive flag, measure all of your lobster, make sure you have all necessary licenses and are diving in legal areas. There are a lot of areas that are closed to lobstering during mini season.
    2. Scout before opening day! Finding a few good spots makes things a lot easier on opening day.
    3. If you scouted some spots, make sure you're the first one to that spot! Leave early to secure your area.
    4. Try a lobster snare instead of a tickle stick and net. It takes some skill but it's basically all we use!
    5. Try diving a bit deeper than the rest of the crowd. There's a lot of lobster deeper than the 5-10 feet that most people dive.
If you like the video about catching lobster in the upper Keys or have other ideas for future videos let us know in the comments! We hope you enjoyed these lobstering tips and tricks!

What camera set up are you using ??? Footage is awesome and color is great !

Most of the footage is taken on GoPro 6s and 7s actually! We have some other cameras we use occasionally but for our dives and fishing videos we primarily use GoPros! We also use a Sony A7III and a6300 for our other videos. The secret to good underwater GoPro footage is clear water and a bit of color correction. Adding some red back into the shots and dropping the exposure of the shadows makes things pop.

    Cool video
I’m in California and we aren’t allowed to use nets, tickle sticks or snares. We have to catch them by hand. I’ve always wanted to go to Florida and give it a try with the snare.
Can you recommend a good charter to me?
Also, how far into the season was this video shot?

I prefer grabbing them by hand! It’s a bit harder here than in California though, the warmer water here seems to make our lobster a bit more mobile! Jake’s offshore adventures in islamorada can take you out lobstering, just tell him I sent you and he will show you a good time! This video was in the first few weeks of season, but even now in March we can catch a limit!

That’s awesome that you’re still limiting this late into the season. I’m definitely going to reach out to Jake for a trip in early August.

What part of the keys was this shot at? For some crazy reason I keep going to Marathon which to me seems over fished. Going to try upper or lower next time. thanks.

This was filmed from upper Islamorada to key largo, but we do really good down in key west!

I'm getting mixed answers. Can you only use a tickle stick or snares while free diving? Or can you Scuba as well?

    • @DerekVanHook
      @DerekVanHook  2 года назад +1

You can use both, you just can’t spear lobster in the US. You cannot use spring loaded snares, but manual hand powered snares like we use in this video are perfectly legal. In the Bahamas, you can spear lobster but can’t Scuba while spearfishing. i’m not sure if you can scuba while lobstering over there, but you can in the US and lots of people do it. Find out more regulations online at FWCs website.
