I've had the privilege of playing this game complete with joystick on pc when I was 5 years old this was an unbelievably immersive experience no other space or action game can replicate even to this day
I couldn't imagine playing without the joystick. It was incredibly immersive. Also, I got weird goosebumps when the dialogue started. It's like I remembered it word for word and I just remembered this game existed again about 5 minutes ago
If you choose to decline further service, we may consider you in default of your contract, and your fee may be suspended pending litigation. Good Luck, Material Defender... Dravis out.
Descent I and II was awesome. I remember that "self-destruct sequence activated" line would always cause me to panic, because I was terrible at controls so finding an emergency exit after you blew up the reactor was pretty hard with all that shaking and time limit going on. I am currently working on recreating a computer interface seeing at 5:52 just to pay a little tribute to this game.
So just a heads up, I am rebuilding the intro cinematic from the ground up in an attempt to bring it up to today's standards. It's going to take awhile, but I am already working with a professional concept artist to make sure it's done right.
@@EternalModerate well here's a small preview of a rough concept for the pyro: www.artstation.com/artwork/v2OGma The final concept is almost finished, will be considerably more detailed and I can't wait to model it. I really want to give Descent the recognition it deserves. If a remade cinematic can bring the game to more people's attention, even better.
@@Agent4054 Nice, looking good so far! In case you don't already know, Adam Pletcher's Pyro GX from the D2 cutscenes is publicly available if you wanted to use it as a reference.
@@EternalModerate Hehe yup, that's what was used as a base for this. We ran through a few different ideas for it, some really different from the cutscene model, but in the end I felt it was best to keep it as close as possible and just make it a more functional looking version of the cutscene model. I figured too many fans would rebel if I made it look *too* different.
All these years that have passed ... all these memories from my childhood ... and now I have to find out that it seems that "Descent 2: Destination Quartzon" which I got with my Wingman extreme joystick ... WAS ONLY A FRICKIN' DEMO??? >:-0
And what one hell of a demo disc it was! Most games give you like what one, or two levels max... even some throwing in a demo timer in there as well. But Destination Quartzon??? Eh, lets give em' 9 entire levels... along with the full cinematic movies and redbook audio soundtrack to boot.
@@MetallicBlade That's not particularly fair. The D2 demo only gave you the first 3 levels. No boss level, no secret level. If you wanted Quartzon you had to buy a 3Dfx card or a Logitech joystick and then it was still just a demo. Compare that to most of the shareware games of the time. You'd often get a good chunk of the game for free.
I wonder if the sequel to Descent II was originally gonna be much different, as Dravis with his dialogue seemed genuinely concerned about the Material Defender's safety, it really makes you think if Parallax had time to make more of these games, how different Descent 3 could have turned out. :D
@@Arrbyy I disagree. Decent 3 is the best of all the games. I like the outside environment and for the first time, we get to see the protagonist, Pilot face. The reason why Decent 3 didn't sell well was because of franchise fatigue.
Indeed, the virtigo expansion pack seemed to indicate Dravis wanted MD1032 to clear out the mines on Beta Ceti after Tycho Brahe. Then he became British and therefore evil :P
That's right because Parallax split up into two companies for no reason at all. Volition wasn't happy with Outrage with what they did with the story of Descent 3 because it wasn't what they've originally planned for Descent 3. Outrage know that Descent was very popular with Playstation and making it a PC game only was a massive mistake.

I agree. D2 is my favorite game of all time! I actually still have the original cd and box, 2 3DFX cards, 6 Wingman and 1 Wingman Extreme joystick. I just have to find a slow PC to play this on LOL! I do have a ported D2 version that will play on Win7 but I couldn't get the joystick or mouse to work correctly.
A year ago I said that I was going to use this as a reference as I attempted to rebuild the pyro. Well, I finally did it and I feel like my end result was pretty good. I wish they hadn't gone with the "Dravis was evil the entire time!" route in Descent 3. I mean, even David Warner can't change the fact that this ending had Dravis _freaking out_ just as much as we were!
Parallax was going to make Descent 3 but then they split into two companies Outrage and Volition. Volition wasn't happy with the story of Descent 3 because it wasn't what originally planned. Actually, they gave the pilot and Dravis a body and a face when they did the cinematics for the PlayStation version of Descent 1, Dravis looked like clay and the pilot was behind a shadow wearing sunglasses. On the ending cinematics you see the pilot wearing a helmet, even though, the animations were better than the ones from Descent 3.
PFFT, I about fell out of my chair at System 3. Remembering that was from one of my videos. That's cool, but now I wish I could go back in time and slide my commentary into the actual level instead of over the cutscene :P
actually, that was done on the PlayStation version of Descent 1. The ending is animated. You never actually see his face though. The animation was done in house and it showed. Thought that way back then too. :\
I played this game so often as a child I can still recite every word of this intro from memory.

Especially Descent 1 Level 13 exit 😂
The cinematography really helps these dated cutscenes look so good even today. I love Descent 2.
The soundtrack of these movies and the sounddesign in general is perfect.

The soundtrack on the cutscenes is movie levels of good.
Funny you should say that... the sound of the warp drive at the end of the intro is the same sound used in Stargate SG-1 for the wormhole opening.

Try Overload- from the creators of Descent
the worst failure they have done in descent 3 was to give those characters a face and body
Doing it with 90s CG tech was... less than stellar too.
What is the planets music?
The wanted to try something new. Even thought they showed the faces in the first game. It was okay for what it was.
