Good god this is beautiful. I lost it at 0:18 when I first watched this a few months back. It sounds like it was climbing up some giant SF hills. Ninja Bus Fan ClassicTVMan1981X
Yup! AC Transit had 35, 40, and 60 foot versions of these as models D35, D40, D60. See video response that I have posted. It is a recording on board an Ex-AC Transit NFI D40 currently running in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada

So apparently S.F. Muni got these D40HF around same time as Toronto TTC received their D40HF ( 6400 Series) from 1988-89
No they were gone by the later half of 2007. I remember riding one one the 28 19 ave route for the last time before they were retired then torn apart at the scrap yard.
Thomas Malone Yes the 1990 D35s were Cummins L10 and ZF HP-590s but the 1992 D35s were 6V92 like unit 8804 here except they have Allison V731 transmissions instead.
ac transit had similar buses i remember riding them in the 90s i also remember riding the gmc newlook buses in oakland and on muni back in the late 80s ...
@@jessealvarez779 Yeah, I can definitely tell. The “depth” in the motor sound is the same as the Gillig’s I used to ride on Long Island in New York. Musical, almost lol
Excellent recording (probably the best sounding D40HF with the DD/Allison combo I've come across). It must have been pulling a hill to start -- really nice demo of engine load and transmission action. Props on getting a mid-hill downshift!
I haven't found them, but do you have any recordings of the 1983-84 Flyer Industries D902's or know of where I can possibly find some on RUclips or elsewhere?
@ea90744 - Yep! A few of them still exist in Canada to this day. Two are operating in Red Deer, Alberta. See my channel for recordings of both units. Search "Red Deer Transit" on my channel. Can't find them? Send me a PM. Again, love this recording!

TheCRTman me too XD
It's sad to think that right now these are just torn apart pieces of scrapped junk now.
@@enolamsamoht one is preserved from heritage week
These buses must have climbing some serious hills!
Mad hills bro
I miss buses with this powertrain. Sounds great!

It would be my guess that they retired that particular fleet in 2004 . These were good buses and I rode on many of them .

@@enolamsamoht Yep, you're right. Closer to '07. The last time I rode a 4500/4600 was '04. People would get them mixed up sometimes.
Marta have the 35 version of these buses in 1990 in Atlanta, Ga.
but in ATL the sound of the engine is so different.

Nice sound, I like the ones San Diego had theirs are higher idled.
Did you ever record MUNI's Flyer D902's?
These buses were the best in AC Transit's fleet. They only have 6 1997 D60's right now.
ac transit had similar buses i remember riding them in the 90s i also remember riding the gmc newlook buses in oakland and on muni back in the late 80s ...
on this particular day , it was working the 45 line
youre right, they had the 2500s, which they really took care of
I never had the pleasure of riding one of these, but it does remind me of our ol MSBA Gillig Phantoms. Great video.
Some Gillig Phantoms were equipped with the same engine/transmission combo as these. It's a beautiful sound!

Even better with a Voith ZF Transmission it changes gears a lot quicker with a engine for an example a 1990 Orion V bus .
I wonder why they didn't turbocharged these engines like the other transit authorities did.
They did lol
Ain't this the bus they used on Mrs. Doubtfire????
Nah that was unit #8922 in the Mrs. Doubtfire Movie
@8v71buses It looked like the same particular bus, don't really care about what number the bus was.
@@darnell899 Yes it was
me too man ... MUNI worked these buses hard.
Seems as thought this bus was traveling pretty slow. I love it!! I wish I was born in the 70s so I could enjoy all this!!!
These buses are from the late 80's
I was born in the 80's and I DID enjoy all this!!
dont u wish u was born in the mid-late 80s ?
NOPE....Because I was! 😏😎86!
I was born in the EARLY 80's and had the pleasure of this sound AND the "new bus smell"!!
