When an asteroid threatens to collide with Earth, NASA honcho Dan Truman (Billy Bob Thornton) determines the only way to stop it is to drill into its surface and detonate a nuclear bomb. This leads him to renowned driller Harry Stamper (Bruce Willis), who agrees to helm the dangerous space mission provided he can bring along his own hotshot crew. Among them is the cocksure A.J. (Ben Affleck), who Harry thinks isn't good enough for his daughter (Liv Tyler), until the mission proves otherwise.

Late 90s-early 2000s Michael Bay is a fascinating example of "I hope movies like this never, ever get made again" and "Dang, I miss movies like this."
Speak for yourself I loved this movie when it come out and it was a big hit at the box office. The only ones who panned it were critics who nobody should listen to anyway
Micheal Bay is literally everything wrong with Hollywood AND America wrapped up into one TERRIBLE director.
I knew the blonde pilot was familiar. The actress would go on to be NCIS Agent Paula Cassidy, a recurring character from the first 5 seasons of the show. I remember her character becoming a real problem, as in her first two episodes across two seasons, in both instances her decision to take no action when finding a problem creates an even greater and more daunting threat that the Main Characters have to clean up. And yet there was never anything mentioned about consequences she faced other than getting an attitude when she was confronted about it.

If the asteroid is the size of Texas the center wouldn't be 800 feet, it would be a lot deeper.
Texas is 870 miles across.
This is a movie where they trained miners to be astronauts instead of astronauts to be miners. I don’t think they had logic in mind when making it.
@@LSmith12xJust as the boss said, you need to know what to look for when mining. Greenies can’t spot bad parts of the area to avoid without hands on training which takes years to learn. And you need teams that has knowledge in different fields.

“Blew the landing by 26 miles.” You try flying a shuttle through a debris field, getting cut off by your twin shuttle, and see if you land your mark on an asteroid, Jacka$$.
Yeah we should totally let the driller do the flying, not the trained pilot.

This movie was okay. Never saw Deep Impact.
First, this movie was absolutely amazing in every way. A little cheesy at times but never just "okay."
Second, Deep Impact has a very, very different vibe. It's much more introspective. It also has one of the top 10 (maybe number 7 or 8) Movie President Speeches of all time. It's nowhere near Andrew Shephard's speech in The American President, but it's still good. Deep Impact is worth watching for that speech alone.
Ironically, “because I’m a genius!” is one of the dumbest lines in movie history.
