This video goes over how to locate and replace an engine control module (ECM) on a 2009 Toyota Corolla with a 1.8 motor. This should be the same process for any 2009-2013 Toyota Corolla with a 1.8 motor. The engine control module is an electronic control unit that manages the engine's performance. It monitors various sensors and adjusts fuel injection, ignition timing, and other critical engine functions to optimize performance, fuel efficiency while meeting federal emissions.
Some symptoms of a bad ECM include an illuminated check engine light, no start condition, poor engine performance, and an ECM that refuses to run emissions monitors. You could purchase your ECM directly from the dealer and have them program it, but that would definitely be the more expensive way to go.You can expect to pay somewhere between $800 and $1,500 for parts and labor or you could do it yourself like in the video. The ECM’s will vary in price depending on the make and model of the vehicle. This application only set us back about $300 total. You do have to be careful where you purchase your ECM. You want a place that is knowledgeable and reputable and hopefully with a good price to boot. We used Flagship One out of New York, which has been in business for 10 years and offers a lifetime warranty with good reviews.
