Thanks for the excellent tutorial on testing the VSV! I am running a manual 1,33 L 2010 Corolla (1NR-FE) here in Finland. It whistles under cold starts in the winter, particularly when upshifting between gear 2, 3 and 4 (similarly as in the end of your video, noticed while driving in the cabin of the car). I just noticed that it has also started to burn oil (about 1/2 L in 500 km; 10 L per year?!). There was some black soot in the tailpipe when I checked so it is not a leak. I had suspicions about the EGR system earlier but the local mechanic suspected the whistle was coming from the bearings in the belt tensioner. I am currently running it with the original Toyota full synthetic 0W-20. Having added a half-liter yesterday the oil cap was difficult to open, indicating there is a vaccuum (under-pressure). Any tips on where to start? Could it be the VSV valve?

    • @YiannisPagonis
      @YiannisPagonis  2 года назад +3

Burning oil is often the result of worn out parts. For example, worn valve seals and/or piston rings could lead to your car burning oil. Both valve seals and piston rings work to keep engine oil out of the combustion chamber. All of the above applies if you do not have external leaks in the engine lubrication system from eg engine oil filter, oil plug washer, oil pan gasket, etc.
Can a PCV valve burn oil?
If your engine is burning oil, hope that it's due to a bad PCV valve. The PCV valve is designed to allow air to escape the crankcase when the pressure inside grows too high -- but when it malfunctions, it can begin sucking oil into the engine and burning it there instead.

    • @hapet09
      @hapet09 2 года назад +1

@@YiannisPagonis Thanks for the reply! I hope it is only the PCV valve as well. I cleaned it and also the VSV. I also added some Oil Smoke Stop additive to the engine oil. The car still whistles but at least it runs. Let's see if it continues burning...

Hi, I have a lexus ls430 2005 model. I did a ac compressor replacement. For which I had to remove the air filter, radiator and fan. When I connected it back on, my car is have stalling on idle and also when accelerating, when pressed full pedal it takes 4 to 5 seconds to hit the highest rpm. When I am connecting the computer it is showing cylinder 3 and 5 misfire, I also replaced the coil and spark plugs with the other cylinders still it shows 3 and 5.
Can you help me out here please

    • @YiannisPagonis
      @YiannisPagonis  2 года назад +1

When replacing car AC compressor what else should be replaced?
For the compressor that is seized, you will at the very least need to replace the compressor assembly and clutch, receiver drier, expansion valve, and flush out the system. I recommend having a mechanic diagnose your vehicle to see if any other components need replaced in order to fix your air conditioner.
Why does my AC cause my car to stall?
A fault in the IAC such as build up, can cause poor idling or stalling of the engine. If not working properly, the engine may not cope with the loads produced by various systems in the car. More specifically, it may be too low to run the A/C and hence it stalls when turned on.
What will a bad IAC cause?
When the idle air control valve fails, it inhibits the flow of air through the engine. When the car can't receive air, it leads to engine stalling. The severity of this symptom can range from occasional stalling at first, to stalling immediately after ignition.

    • @YiannisPagonis
      @YiannisPagonis  3 месяца назад +1

No it is not normal my friend. It can be a dangerous problem, but with the right knowledge, you can identify, fix, and prevent an EVAP leak. An EVAP leak, or evaporative emissions control system leak, occurs when fuel vapors escape from the car's fuel tank or any other part of the system that controls them.
What are the symptoms of a faulty purge valve?
If the Purge Valve is stuck open or closed, it can cause the engine to run poorly or not start at all. A defective Purge Valve can also manifest itself through symptoms like reduced engine power, sluggish acceleration, and even engine stalling.

    • @YiannisPagonis
      @YiannisPagonis  Год назад +1

The resistance R of an object also varies with temperature: R=R0(1+αΔT) R = R 0 ( 1 + α Δ T ) , where R0 is the original resistance, and R is the resistance after the temperature change. The resistance of all materials changes as their temperature changes. If the temperature is lowered, resistance (typically) declines. In fact, if cooled sufficiently, the material becomes a "superconductor" with no significant resistance. Increasing the temperature (typically) increases resistance.

CODE P0660: Intake manifold tuning valve control circuit/open bank 1
When your engine control module registers an electrical fault or other open electrical issue on bank one, it triggers error code P0660. You’re probably wondering, how do I fix trouble code P0660? Here are some symptoms of this trouble code, common causes and steps to take to restore your vehicle.
WHAT IS AN INTAKE MANIFOLD TUNING VALVE?
This manifold is used to change the air intake of your vehicle and redirect it to a separate set of intake runners. It also regulates the pressure between intake plenums. This simple valve is commonly made of plastic and is subject to wear and damage, particularly from extreme temperatures.
A P0660 trouble code can be the result of either an electrical or mechanical issue. Look for these symptoms and determine the cause before you look for a repair solution.
      SYMPTOMS OF ERROR CODE P0660
So, what does the code P0660 mean? While this error code could be the result of a damaged sensor, it could also be the first sign of a serious issue. It’s important to treat this error code seriously to avoid any additional damage in the future.
A damaged intake manifold tuning valve could cause your engine to perform poorly altogether. From cold start issues and startup misfires to decreased fuel economy and clicking sounds in your engine compartment, there are a range of symptoms that could be caused by trouble code P0660. Some are minor inconveniences, while others can reduce the efficiency of your vehicle or make it difficult to start your vehicle reliably.
When working properly, your intake manifold tuning valve promotes an optimal balance of air pressure and airflow in your engine. An improper valve could allow too much or too little air and pressure to reduce the efficiency of your engine or cause damage to other areas of your engine.
      COMMON CAUSES OF P0660
Once you’ve determined that your engine issues are the result of error code P0660, here are some common causes to inspect. Whether you have a single issue or a series of faults, look for solutions for one or more of these issues:
      Damaged intake manifold tuning valve
      Cracked or stuck valve parts
Poor performance due to extremely cold weather
Loose connectors, frayed wiring or corroded electrical components
Issues with your engine control module
      Valve contamination
Thankfully, each of these causes can be found and solved. Find your intake manifold tuning valve and begin to inspect it and related components. Use voltage testers to go over the electrical connections and ensure proper electricity to all your sensors and essential parts. Once you’ve discovered the area that needs repairs, you can determine the best solution.
      FINDING A SOLUTION
For a trouble code P0660 issue, you’ll typically need to replace your intake manifold tuning valve or other component. The most common solution is replacing a part that has cracked due to exposure to the extreme cold or melted due to the extreme heat of your engine.
If nothing is obviously broken after a visual inspection, check your valve. Some OBD-II scanners allow you to activate your valve. If so, look for any sticking points or areas where it isn’t operating with its full range of motion.
Temperature-related damage may be the cause of this OBD-II scanner error code P0660 problem, but it could be a symptom of other damage. Check to see if other error codes are active and inspect other areas of your engine for possible damage. After you replace your intake manifold tuning valve, parts or electrical wiring, be sure to test your vehicle and see whether the error code returns. If it does, you’ll need to go over common causes again or check your engine control module.

The vacuum switching valve (VSV) regulates the vacuum supply to the actuator. It is usually closed and only opens when the electronic control unit energizes it. By turning on the VSV and shutting the air control valve, the vacuum is directed to the actuator. This essentially lengthens the air intake manifold. In contrast, de-energizing the VSV blocks the vacuum to the actuator, draining the trapped vacuum off the diaphragm. The VSV determines when the fuel vapor is allowed to escape from the charcoal canister and go into the vacuum. When the valve works properly, it will create an audible cracking sound when it opens and shuts. These valves can be controlled by hand, pneumatically, or electrically. Also, a coolant VSV acts as the heater control valve for many automobiles. It is a basic electrical switch that is opened and closed by a diaphragm vacuum. This switch, when triggered, allows antifreeze into the inside of the heater core. This makes the heater work and reduces air temperature. Since the coolant vacuum switch effectively works as a heater control valve, it can disable the heater core if it malfunctions or has any faults. In the long run, the worst-case scenario is that driving with a vacuum leak and elevated temperatures caused by operating a lean air-fuel ratio might lead to broken engines. That said, the vacuum leaks might stem from a bad valve cover gasket, so check every related part carefully.
What Are Bad Vacuum Switching Valve Symptoms?
There are some symptoms inside the VSV valve and heater core, such as the heater releasing warm air or not blowing any warm air at all and coolant leaks. Beside, other signs of a faulty EGR valve you can observe with your eyes are:
Your car has a rough idle.
The car has increased fuel consumption and decreased fuel efficiency.
      You can smell fuel.
The engine management light stays on.
      There are more vehicle emissions.
There are engine noises when driving, like knocking or tapping.
      Low engine speeds
A faulty vacuum switch valve can result in many mechanical problems for your car. Thus, knowing the symptoms of a failing VSV could help you notice the issues soon and take actions to deal with them.

11 Causes Of RPM Going Up And Down
There are a few reasons why your car’s RPM might be going up and down at idle.
      1. Worn Out Spark Plugs
One common reason for RPM fluctuations is worn-out spark plugs. When the plugs are in bad condition, they can’t produce a strong spark, making it difficult for the engine to run smoothly. As a result, the RPMs may go up and down as the car tries to compensate. If your spark plugs are worn out, they should be replaced as soon as possible.
      2. Damaged Ignition Wires
Another potential cause of RPM fluctuations is damage to the ignition wires. If the wires are broken or frayed, it can create resistance in the electrical current and disrupt the engine idle speed. This can cause the RPMs to rise and fall unpredictably.
      3. Vacuum Leaks
When there’s a leak in the vacuum line, it causes a loss of engine vacuum. It makes it difficult for the engine to function properly and can cause the RPMs to fluctuate. You can check for a vacuum leak by spraying a soapy water solution around the suspected area. If you see bubbles, then you’ve found your vacuum leak. Once you’ve located the vacuum leak, there are a few things you can do to fix it:
If the leak is caused by a crack or a hole in the hose, you can replace the hose.
If the leak is caused by a loose fitting, you can tighten the fitting.
If the leak is caused by a torn gasket, you can replace the gasket.
If the leak is caused by a hole in the engine, you may need to have the engine repaired or replaced.
      4. Carburetor Problems
A carburetor that’s not properly working can also cause the RPMs to fluctuate. If the carburetor is dirty or clogged, it won’t provide the engine with the right amount of fuel. It can lead to a rough idle and cause the RPMs to fluctuate.
      5. Clogged Fuel Injector
A clogged fuel injector can also cause the engine to run erratically. When the injector is clogged, it can’t deliver the right amount of fuel to the engine. It can lead to surging and stalling and cause the RPMs to go up and down. There are a few things that you can do to try and unclog your fuel injector. One thing you can try is to use a fuel injector cleaner. This will help to clean the gunk and debris that has built up in the injector. You can also try using a high-pressure air hose to blast the clog out of the injector.
      6. Dirty Air Filter
A dirty air filter can also cause the engine to run unevenly. When there is a clogged fuel filter with dirt and dust, it can’t allow enough air to get into the engine. It can cause the RPMs to increase or decrease unexpectedly. Be sure to change your air filter regularly to avoid this issue.
      7. Bad Idle Air Control Valve
A bad idle control valve can also lead to fluctuations in the RPMs. If you’re noticing that your RPMs are constantly going up and down, even when you’re not accelerating, it’s likely that you have a bad idle air control valve. The best way to determine if your idle air control valve is the issue is to check engine light. If it’s on, there’s a good chance that the idle air control valve is the problem.
      8. Incorrect Valve Timing
If the valves are not timed correctly, the engine can be difficult to run. This can lead to the RPMs going up and down as the car compensates. This is because the incorrect valve timing will affect the air/fuel mixture and the engine’s ability to create power. At a minimum, the valve timing should be checked and adjusted if needed. In some cases, a new valve timing belt may be needed in order to correct the issue.
      9. Faulty Throttle Pedal Position Sensor
A faulty throttle pedal position sensor can also cause the RPMs to go up and down. This sensor is responsible for sending information to the car’s computer about how far you have depressed the pedal. If it is malfunctioning, it can cause the engine to rev up and down erratically. There are a few things you can do to troubleshoot a faulty throttle pedal position sensor. First, check the wiring and connectors to make sure they are all connected and in good condition. Next, check the sensor itself for any damage or debris that may be interfering with its operation.
      10. Transmission Issues
If the transmission is not working correctly, it can cause the engine to struggle. This can lead to the RPMs spiking or dropping unexpectedly. First, make sure that your transmission fluid is at the correct level. If it is low, adding more fluid may help to fix the problem. You can also try changing the transmission fluid altogether, as this may help to get rid of any issues that you are having. If neither of those things seems to help, it is possible that there is an issue with your transmission itself. In this case, you will need to take it to a mechanic.
      11. Problem With The Combustion Process
If something is wrong with the combustion process, it can cause the RPM to go up and down. One possible problem is a misfire. This happens when the air/fuel mixture doesn’t ignite properly, and it can cause the RPM to spike. Another problem is detonat

This valve is called ΄΄Vacuum Switching Valve΄΄ and:
      1. What does a vacuum switch valve do?
The vacuum switching valve (VSV) which controls the vacuum supply to the actuator is normally closed and passes vacuum to the actuator when it is energized by the ECU. By energizing the VSV vacuum is passed to the actuator, closing the air control valve. This effectively lengthens the intake manifold run.
      2. What are the symptoms of a bad vacuum switching valve?
      a. Your engine has a rough idle.

      b. Your car has poor performance.
      c. You have increased fuel consumption.
      d. Your car frequently stalls when idling.
      e. You can smell fuel.
      f. Your engine management light stays on.
      g. Your car produces more emissions.
      3. How does a switching valve work?
The switching valve is required to direct hot feed to either drum A or drum B. The valve also has the bypass position to divert flow back to the fractionator for or during emergencies. This valve is found in delayed coker units where multi-port valves are required in high-temperature coking applications.

So CLEAN (AND CHECK CAREFULLY) the throttle body and the idle air control valve, as in the following videos:

My friend this job (if it's a 10th gen Corolla model like mine) then it's a very difficult, laborious and time consuming process that very few people can do (remove and replace). It is inside a plastic casing which is not visible, that is, it is in a hidden place.
What is the EVAP system on a Toyota Corolla?
Evaporative Emission Control (EVAP) System - Code P0441 Diagnostic
The EVAP system manages gasoline vapor evaporation from the gas tank and fuel systems. It consists of several parts but works relatively simply. Vapors from the gasoline tank, as the vehicle sits, idles, ambient temperatures change, etc. can begin to exert pressure on the fuel tank.
How does Toyota EVAP system work?
Fuel vapors from the fuel tank are captured in the charcoal canister and extracted when the engine is running. If vapor pressure increases in the fuel tank or during refueling events, excess pressure is released from the normally open vent valve via the canister air filter.
      How to fix P0441
To repair error code P0441, you'll need to first diagnose the code and determine exactly what the issue is. Replacing the gas cap and purge valve are two of the most common fixes for this error code. However, there could be other issues that trigger this code, like disconnected or damaged wires within your EVAP system.
What are the components of car EVAP system?
EVAP systems have been required on gasoline powered vehicles since the 1970s. A typical system consists of the fuel tank, an EVAP vapor storage canister full of charcoal, valves, hoses and a sealed fuel tank gas cap. The EVAP system is designed to stop fuel system fumes from leaking directly into the atmosphere.
