This has happened to me a little over a month ago! I made eye contact with a very handsome man on the G train going south from court square. We caught each others eyes 4 more times before i smiled and so did he. I felt this rush come over me as my stop approached. I was probably so flush and just looked down at my feet hoping he wouldn't notice. The train stopped and i took one last look as i stepped off the train. I walked about 10 steps before i felt a hand on my back and I turned around and it was him. And he says, 'I hope this isnt too strange but I couldn't just let you walk away forever without getting your name, Hi, im Taylor.' My heart melted. And from that point on we spoke everyday since. Hes one of the most beautiful bright and charismatic people ive ever met in the city. We just clicked, its an amazing feeling to have met so organically... no dating apps, no websites, just by human nature.
Emily Fasano please tell me this is not made up! you know all the times that has happened to me and i wouldn't have the courage to go up and say hi when i could have fucking meet the love of my life!!
wilson Diaz You have to go up to them, take the chance its so worth it bc you both share this beautiful story together thats so rare. it feels like a movie scene.. i think it brings you closer because of the courage it takes to approach someone, esp here in new york where people can be so closed off
My beautiful wife and I met at a train station, twice, two years apart. The first time was as she got onto the train. We made eye contact and we both smiled and I think I saw her blush a little. She was wearing a beautiful sundress and I was so close to starting up a conversation with her but I was too nervous. My stop came and again we made eye contact and smiled before I got off the train. For at least a month after this I regretted not saying anything to her. I vowed to myself that if I saw her again I would introduce myself and talk with her. We then met two years later at the same train station on the same train line. She got on the train and we made eye contact. Again we both smiled and it was clear to both of us that we recognised each other. This time without even hesitating I introduced myself and talked with her. The rest is happily ever after :)
NYC native here; it was really cool hearing a poem about a train I take quite often and seeing the W4 stop in such a different light :). Although I haven't been lucky enough to meet anyone romantically; I've had conversations with strangers on the train before when they recognized my textbooks or simply asked for directions and it's always such a wonderful experience to connect with such interesting people. Thanks for making such an awesome video with such a beautiful message!!!
After two years of deep depression, and losing my car, and using public transportation, I have been crawling out of my head, and depression, and have started to try to make eye contact in a goal to give away a smile to others in hopes I can help with all the pain in the world, even if only for a split second to try to get a smile in return, to get a genuine smile to help me with my depression, if any of that make sense. It is working, it has improved my attitude, and my sorrow. I hope one day to meet someone with whom to fall in love with, perhaps beginning with a smile. I saw this video and thought I am not alone, in my loneliness.
Apart from the poem, I especially enjoyed the use of signs and recognizable text on all the electronic devices in the video. Well done Max Stossel and Matthew Freidell
Followed the link from Humans of New York. So glad I did! This poem and the visual editing is perfection. Just breathtakingly beautiful. Thank you for your insights. It is hard to recognize that social media shares the same variable reward schedule as gambling. The most addicting of positive reinforcement. Your words have definitely given me some food for thought so I will devote a moment to reflection.
Thank you for this work of art, Max and Matthew. It is beyond inspiring and makes you hit replay again and again. I really hope there will be more videos coming soon, as I would also love to hear more of your poems.
Wow... maybe it's because I'm lying in bed sick today, that the gloominess clings to my thoughts like a paste. But watching this video has lifted my spirits to another level... thank you!
I've struck up conversations on the NYC subway, but I'm from Indiana and don't know that you're not supposed to do so! It isn't hard. Expect rejection, which you'll get 90% of the time, but someone to share a cuppa' with the other 10%. Costs nothing, rewards great!
Being an NYC teen, this truly opened my eyes. Amazing film and maybe it would be this easy, as long as we all keep open minds. Thank you for this, I won't forget it.
Cool and realistic video , bravo Max keep going , people need to change their's mentality on how we interact with people , especially in the subway , you know some of them they're acting like robots , it's just ridiculous pretending they are alone when in fact there's a few dozens or maybe hundreds !
Nice one...and you can easily transport it into other aspects of life. We're so focused on the destination, the goal. Instead we should enjoy the journey, take a break and smell the roses once in a while...otherwise we miss the opportunities on the wayside.
When I went to London I was on the tube and no one talks, no one looks at each other. I even saw a man give up his seat to and elderly woman without any eye contact or conversation. Is it like that NYC? The only other train system I've been on is in Scotland and it is very different everyone talks to everyone.
+A guy who likes to criticise other people's video because he has nothing better to do In Washington DC it is all about avoiding eye contact and conversation.
It's so ironic that I watched this today, because I had had a great spark of a connection with a man on the train today, and when I got off at my stop, I was sad there was no way for me talk to him again.
Do you take the train to work in your day? Do you see faces like that, to which you wish you could say, a word or two or just smile instead, Or do you just glare around, steal glances, gaffe a smile with a silly grin, and pretend to not care, Cuz I do that everyday!
I really love the message and the poem here. But I must say, I'm disappointed that there aren't any other videos on this channel. You should definitely do more poetry stuff, even if the projects are way smaller.
I think I'm a talented storyteller and then I see this. HOLY FREAKING CRAP. While I think the meaning *could* be ambiguous, I take from this that we need to stop staring at screens 24/7 and look around... And for the people that are looking around, but not exactly paying attention, well--- that's the next step.
*There is a Spanish saying that says:* “Never say: From this water I’ll never drink.” [Nunca digas: De esta agua nunca beberé]. - *This video reminds me of that because,* the people that do know me know that the last place that I would ever want to live-in on this planet is called, New York City. Don’t give me wrong, I love visiting NY. I love my family there [every single one of them - even the out of this world craziest one]. Theirs friends, my friends. They all are these kind of people that if you ever end up left behind on an desert island, they are the ones you want to be stocked with. - *Anyways, this video reminds me of a time* (100 million years ago) that I almost moved to NYC [I had my bags packed and everything]. Just because of LOVE [you know, love makes you do stupid things]. -- *p.s.* the hidden message behind this video, is AWESOME!
Only Atoms Actually, we've made lots of new friends in the NYC subway over the years here (including a couple CL missed connections!). If everyone just opened their hearts a tiny bit, smiled once in a while, and embrace all the amazing people in our city, the NYC subway can be a wonderful place! :)
i should be analyzing my extension english poetry not this :') but i must say that this is really grand the writing the poetry the graphics everything about this is just mesmerizing beautiful even. Everyone should watch this, and the writer should be congratulated for this because it truly encompasses human nature. ~Raven
Why is Anya Raza even in this video, is she an actress or was she trying to be when this video was shot? Anya has been dating actor Riz Ahmed for the past few years. She's supposedly a "development economist".
OK, so not an actress? Career-wise, she seems to be all over the place. Was wondering what she actually did for a living. Noticed she also modeled. Assumed she was trying to be an actress/model.
Why all the comments are only from 5 years ago? How can this beautiful poetic, emotional, so awesome edited video is not bring shared or watched anymore. Honestly, I love the concept. I came across this video through a blog on Medium by Bryant Hodson . Link - uxplanet.org/about-ux-8eddfbb7a13b
