  • I can't stand to see you sad
I can't bear to hear you cry
If you can't tell me what you need
All I can do is wonder why
    Someday, someway aww
    Someday, someway, yeah now
    Someday, someway
    Maybe I'll understand you
After all you've done for me
All I really want to do
Is take the love you brought my way
And give it all right back to you
    Someday, someway
    Someday, someway yeah yeah
    Someday, someway
    Maybe you'll understand me
    You've taken everything from me
    I've taken everything from you
I'll love you for my whole life through
Now after all you've done for me
All I really want to do
Is take the love you brought my way
And give it all right back to you
    Someday, someway aww
    Someday, someway, yeah now
Someday, someway maybe you'll understand me
    You've taken everything from me
    I've taken everything from you

The musical guests on SCTV Network 90 were/are mostly excellent and have stood the test of time, just as the show as a whole has. It took me years to realize this is the late great Danny Gatton on guitar. Seek out the great guest appearance by Dave Edmunds in the SCTV sketch "I was a teenage communist".

I was fortunate to see RG with Danny Gatton's band in SF and Berkeley Ca in early 80s. The Bekeley Square concert was recorded and later released as The Humbler. 2:14 Gattons inspired quitar solos were the best I had ever heard before and since. There were less than 200 people in the audience. My daughter and I were there. RG was in splendid voice and with that band it was powerful

That's the problem with depression... high highs and devastating lows. It is awful to think that a talent and skill as great as that fell to a moment of despair. This, and the death of Ian Curtis were like spears. Being able to relate is not always a good thing, I am sad to report.

When I was 17 years old in 1979, I bought Robert Gordon’s album Rock Billy Boogie. I didn’t have a lot of money back then, so every album had to be something special. Most of the albums I bought when I was in high school were selected after reading reviews by Steve Simels.
Steve Simels and other writers for Stereo Review Magazine were a huge influence on my music taste and the music I have listened to most of my life. I wish I knew Steve personally so I could tell him how important he is to me.
I follow the Powerpop blog that Steve does, but he has not posted in almost two months. I hope he is doing well.
    RIP Robert Gordon.

I remember watching this on SCTV when it first aired and thought wow what a great rockabilly song (which I learned was written by Marshall Crenshaw). Later I discovered his cover of another Marshall Crenshaw song “Something’s Gonna Happen” which is also great rockabilly song (and also featured the immortal Danny Gatton on guitar). I was always amazed back then when this song “Someday, Someway” only got into the 70’s of the Top 100 and “Something’s Gonna Happen” failed to chart! RCA actually dropped Robert Gordon right after these songs saying he wasn’t commercially viable enough!

Is Mr. Gordon having health issues? I am asking because of your fairly recent comments.
I also see (from online research) Mr. Gordon is actually nearing his seventh decade. My how time flips, flops and flies!
I have seen Robert Gordon perform live exactly twice--once in the very early 1990s at a now-defunct club called Nightstage in Cambridge, MA, and again actually on June 17, 1994, the very evening of a certain infamous police chase (in California) of a suspect in a white Ford Bronco. I had never seen so many people watching the television screens at a bar as I did that evening, not even for a sporting event. But, fortunately, Mr. Gordon's set that evening took most persons in the bar away from the TV screens long enough to become immersed in his more enjoyable performance. Both times I saw (and heard) Mr. Gordon live I was tremendously impressed by his energy and the authenticity (to rockabilly) of his shows.
I also briefly chatted with Mr. Gordon that evening of 06-17-1994, just as he was arriving at the also-now-defunct roots music club known as Johnny D's (in Somerville, MA). The one thing I remember most was Mr. Gordon referred to some guy as a "cat," which conveyed to me he had really absorbed that rockabilly lingo as part of his everyday vocabulary. Either that or he affected that lingo whenever he appeared in public. In any case, he was convincing.
You also stated your "friend penned the song." So I gather your friend is Marshall Crenshaw.
By the way, my former band appeared, along with a track by Chris Spedding, on the European version of a Buddy Holly tribute CD. I gather Mr. Crenshaw must also be a fan of Holly's music, since he portrayed Holly in the Richie Valens biopic "La Bamba," as well was in the reunion band in the film "Peggy Sue Got Married" starring Kathleen Turner and Nicholas Cage. That latter film was also the last film role of that great character actor Leon Ames, perhaps best remembered now for his role as neighbor "Colonel Gordon Kirkwood" in the TV sitcom "Mister ED." Ames replaced Larry Keating (who had played "Wilbur Post's" acerbic neighbor "Roger Addison"), when Keating died suddenly after the start of the series' fourth season.
Anyway, my best wishes to Mr. Gordon.
