I just picked up a Guild DS-240 yesterday. Was looking at way more expensive Martin's. Passed by this, I loved the color, picked it up and played it, and loved the deep tones and long sustain. Bought it. Great guitar for a great price.
I am so fortunate the have gotten my hands on a guild d55 after years of saving !!! It’s my most prized possession and just keeps getting better over time. It had a great response, comfortable neck, and otherworldly sound. It really shines with open tunings as well! The only thing some people dislike is the small nut width ( 1 11/16ths) but it’s perfect for me.
D-55 was the first quality guitar I bought about 20 years ago, incredible especially in double dropped D or open G tuning. I’ve now acquired Martin HD-28 and D-41 and a Taylor 814 and while all are great, the Guild has aged wonderfully. A cannon, heaviest of the 4. Strikingly well balanced.
I agree with the open tunings, went to open G a couple weeks ago and haven’t tuned it back to standard as I’m being showered with beautiful overtones. D55 is right up there with the top of the line martins, Taylor’s, and Gibson.

The D-55 is much richer overall but DS-240 has very beautiful mid forward sound with nice sparkle. Sound here like a nice slope shoulder guitar should sound.
Love Guild Guitars, went to HS in the 70's and listened to a lot of John Denver and Dan Fogelberg, who both played Guilds in those early days. I started playing guitar in 1977 and my parents bought me an Epiphone "starter" (actually an "Epi") guitar and played it for years. When it came time to buy my first "high-end" guitar I spent months going to guitar stores in Colorado trying out different guitars and finally landed on a Guild D50, which they don't make anymore, but is the same as a D55 without the bling. I think back then, it was about $500 cheaper than the 55, which was a lot back then. :) I still love and play my Guild D50 every week! Great video, thank you, I really enjoy them.
Walked into the music store with two player buddies in June of 1968 intending to trade in my unimpressive 00018 on a new D28, After comparing tone,playability and price walked out with a Guild D50 ( Braz ?} and have never looked back. To me and most others an incredibly beautiful sounding instrument and, after nearly 55 years, still problem free and great looking.
"For those who know" . Sums up the Memoir to a T. Got one a couple of years ago and I love it. Guild has always been that sleeper brand, excellent instruments. Still anxiously waiting for the Baritone to be available.
The DS-240 doesn't quite sound like the D-55, but it still sounds phenomenal for a sub $600 guitar. I find a lot of guitars below $750 or so sound simply dull and uninspiring and with many of the Asian Guilds that's just not the case. In fact, there's many of them you could tell me were much more expensive US made models and I'd be inclined to believe it if I wasn't super familiar with the US lineup.

I have the opportunity to buy a Guild D140 Westerly in the burst finish (it looks absolutely beautiful in the advert pics) used in great condition and great price so I've been trying to listen to as many clips as I can, thanks for this, it has convinced me, these Guilds sound cavernous and delicate at the same time, really enjoyed your playing and bringing out the subtle differences.
I have both and the f55 sounds wonderfully different than the d55. I’m looking to add the f55 maple to my Guild collection. BTW the f512 rosewood and maple are fantastic 12 string guitars.
I have been thinking about that DS 240 since I played it back in 2019. I have a 2017 J45 and I wanted a "beater" version. That guild was phenomenal. I still don't know why I haven't pulled the trigger, because I always check it out when I go into a store. I guess I keep getting higher end models and just keep that little guy in the back of my head. If y'all are on the fence, please go play it. You'll leave with it, guaranteed
In 1982 I bought a Cherry Starfire IV, and a D55 Natural. They were awesome guitars, Guild is not to be overlooked. Great Quality, Playability and sound

That D-55 sounds fantastic. I think the , sound, materials, construction, and bling on it make it worth the price. Especially considering a Martin D-41 or 42 will cost more. But that round shoulder dread sounds really good. If you’re looking for a great sounding guitar to take around and not want to risk a J45 or similar guitar, that may fit the bill. Some folks don’t want a smaller travel guitar.
First of all, Cooper makes a cheap guitar sound expensive. It may be the best sounding $500 guitar. The D-55 is a great sounding guitar! The lows are deeper and more articulate and the highs are crisp. The entire sound is full and clear. Big price difference but big difference in sound and looks. It’s money well spent!
I bought my 1981 D-55 new. I was 19 and had saved all of my gigging money. You should hear it today. Except I'm so protective of it. So I bought another in 2020! I know... So did my 55 other guitars - most of which have been sold. I recently found an F-47, two years ago a F-50R and today a collector's D-100. Now I can die happy!!!

I wish they would offer the D55 & D55E in that dark brown burst like that. I would pull the trigger immediately. Not a huge fan of the regular sunburst offering on the D55 currently.
Ther's something to be said about beginning with a good guitar. I got my first guitar in 1979 as a Christmas present from my wife{a medera} and it was having problems. so the store in Clevland gave me a loaner yamaha but couldn't fix my Medera.So My wife and I went to the store and looked around and as I was talking to the owner,I asked what was the best guitar in the store and he showed me a guild D40 AKA as a Guild D40 Traditional.since I didn't know a thing about guitars at that time I took his word for it and bought it. I think it was around 900.00. Yeah that was a lot of money back then for a young couple. To this day it was the best sounding guitar I have ever owned. I kept it 8 years and never even looked at another acoustic. didn't need to. when I played with other guitarists it was always the best sounding guitar at the event.after 8 years I flew out to Idaho for vacation and the airlines broke it. I had it fixed but it was never the same so I traded it for a new strat and that was the beginning of my trip down electric lady land street. I never looked back until recently.Yeah Ive had some nice acoustics over the years but that Guild was still the best thing I ever owned.
Bought a 2008 Martin D-28 Marquis instead of the Guild D-55 due to the string spacing... Marquis is 1 3/4 nut with 2 5/16 at the saddle. The Marquis also had an Adirondack top. That said... the D-55 sounds terrific... but very happy with the Marquis.
Great video. Great sound from that D55, and great playing by Cooper. I had a Guild in 1972 and it was a very nice guitar. Glad to see they appear back on track. Folks don’t realize how big they were in the folk era. I wish they made a 1-3/4 nut width . Much better for me. Thanks again for great information and videos

I love the J45 look, I played the epiphone j45 and didn’t care for it. Ended up buying a Martin D16E from you guys last week and love it but I still REALLY want a slope dread with a burst finish. Next guitar for sure

I've been a Guitar player since the mid 1970's, and have enjoyed the Acoustic Guitar over Electric. I've had many Brands of Acoustic Guitars along the way, but sort of like finding that Soul Mate, the 1 out of 10,000, I stumbled upon a Guild D-55, and Loved it! Great sound, a Cannon! I bought it right there and then, and still have it today, some 35 years later. I have played it a lot, and it now has some "Character", but still sounds amazing, and in spite of the scars from being my main Acoustic Guitar, it is still a great guitar.
Great video guys, very interesting. What is the neck profile like on them? I think it's something that should always be mentioned. Awesome playing Cooper, that crazy arpeggio is a bit much ; ), but both guitars sound great in your more than capable hands.
I think Guild is putting out probably close to the best guitars at every price point... I am still having an internal debate between a Westerly Guild OM-120 vs a Martin 00/000-15M, if Guild offered a USA version I think I would own it!
FYI, Guild M-20 (USA) @ $1700. Guild OM-120 (China) @$700, I bought one after trying several Martin 15 series rather unimpressed in spite of all the online accolades. It has a glossy finish I was unprepared for, all solid, plays fine.
I have a D-20 and a D-40 Traditional Guild. If I had the money, I'd have a D-55 too. And, by the way, I also have an early 70's blond (maple b &s) Guild jumbo. It is a monster! Unfortunately it really could use a neck reset now (I had to lower the bridge & saddle just a little to much for my taste). But it still plays like butter.
Honestly the only reason i’ve never gotten a guild guitar is the fact that everytime i play one at a store, it has fret buzz like crazy. I’ve never played a guild at guitar center that hasn’t had fret buzz, i try atleast 3 guild guitars everytime i go, they always have buzz. I know i can fix it myself, but I don’t think i should have to on a brand new guitar.
@@tdc_2021 Im not sure! I frequent about 5 different guitar centers along the east coast every month or two, and I can never find a guild without buzz! I really want one, but I just can’t find it!
This is definitely an issue I’ve also had with Guild guitar’s mostly newer ones. All needed major fret leveling done. I don’t believe Guild plek’s their frets like Gibson or Martin does.
Context and budget always plays a big roll in guitar choices. if you've never had the budget to afford an all solid guitar you may never have even played one in a shop. A solid top guitar (well built and set up) that helps you make music could be your keeper anyway.
Both are great sounding guitars. Still, the D55 is miles ahead. Guild definitely done a fantastic job in build great instruments. Now I have to add Guild to my candidate list to fill up one of the 2 remaining slot on my guitar rack (bcos that is the max number of guitar my partner allows me to have). Great comparison Review!
I picked up a Breedlove Organic Concert E - Torrefied European Spruce top, solid African Mahogany back, sides, and neck, B-stock demo for $350, and the higher end Jeff Bridges signature version is available for around $500. Set up and refurbed in Bend, OR before shipping to their dealers (reverb storefronts). The cheapest guitar I've picked up, and one of the warmest and open I've played (and my SIL is happy, too).
Right now I have a Washburn that’s $150 but I’m looking for a good upgrade at the $500-600 range and saw this, is it worth an upgrade even though it’s not acoustic electric? I’m not trying to play shows so I guess it’s not important

Compared it to Martin D28 and HD28 and the Gibson Dreadnoughts in Barcelona before Cov19. The D-55 was surprisingly the best of them! Besides my Martin OM28 my favorite acoustic.
Nice shootout, thanks guys! For around same money, you'd be better off with an Epiphone Masterbilt or a Cort Gold, both All-Solid wood Guitars with great playability and sound.
Honestely, im not sure that i agree that a d35 hd has more bass. From all the video i ever watch the d55 always has the most bass compare to any other guitars and its very noticebale.
I do think that the D-55 sounds much clearer and more differentiated, especially in the mids and highs. But is it worth the immense price difference, especially with these two guitars? In this particular case, I have to say "NO!"
These two guitars are very different in size and shape. Not really the best two guitars to compare to each other. It would’ve been better to compare the Guild dreadnought made in China to this one made in the United States. That memoir is not a dreadnought. It’s much smaller.

Guilds are probably one of the best mid level guitars. Every one I've played has been good.
$3500 for a D55 is just "mid level"? Don't think so.

Right now I have a Washburn that’s $150 but I’m looking for a good upgrade at the $500-600 range and saw this, is it worth an upgrade even though it’s not acoustic electric? I’m not trying to play shows so I guess it’s not important
This doesnt really seem like a fair match up, given they have different tone woods for the back and sides.
It was intended as a companion. It was a demo of what a few thousand dollars would get you vice a few hundred bucks would get.

The headstock of guilds are the best and they sound sooo good but the problem is their cheap models lack any soul

I bought my D-55 after Chris last review, I love my "chocolate cake"! So much debth and richness. Compared it to Martin D28 and HD28 and the Gibson Dreadnoughts in Barcelona before Cov19. The D-55 was surprisingly the best of them! Besides my Martin OM28 my favorite acoustic.

The big Guilds are famous for being great guitars. Period. Easily as good as a D28.

Nice shootout, thanks guys! For around same money, you'd be better off with an Epiphone Masterbilt or a Cort Gold, both All-Solid wood Guitars with great playability and sound.
Honestely, im not sure that i agree that a d35 hd has more bass. From all the video i ever watch the d55 always has the most bass compare to any other guitars and its very noticebale.
I do think that the D-55 sounds much clearer and more differentiated, especially in the mids and highs. But is it worth the immense price difference, especially with these two guitars? In this particular case, I have to say "NO!"
These two guitars are very different in size and shape. Not really the best two guitars to compare to each other. It would’ve been better to compare the Guild dreadnought made in China to this one made in the United States. That memoir is not a dreadnought. It’s much smaller.
