    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos  3 года назад +30

      Pizza and chips helps to remember which direction to point your toes, out (pizza) or straight ahead (chips), but don't forget the very important knee bend position shown as otherwise it still won't work if you try this with half bent knees rather than fully bent. All the parts have to be in action not just one. But keep at it, it will come.

    Great video. I've been wanting to rollerblade for ages and finally decided to get skates, went out for an hour today and towards the end I felt like I was actually starting to get it.
    Fell over 3 times but that wasn't nearly as bad as it seems. The first maybe half hour was absolutely terrbile and I could barely move, but actually managed to get somewhere by perservering. I'm 30 years old so it's a lot more daunting being a bit older. Anyway thanks for the video, really helped me.

      Go for it! Well done!
      I have another even better beginner resource for you which goes into more details and could explain why you feel 3 times. I'm glad you weren't hurt from those falls, but every single fall carries the potential of being damaging so you need to dissect them and reduce them to falling almost never.
      Click FREE TRIAL on this page to get access to 2 strewer videos that form the beginning of every beginner class we do in real life. Not a summaries RUclips video but what we actually teach students in class. I think this will serve you better.

      @@jesusrincon3195 Hey! Well I live in England and it has been crazy wet here for about 6 months so I've barely been out. In about a year my longest distance was 21km, I could get up to about 30km/h and I could do some cool stuff like crossovers. I was working on backwards skating which I was making very slow progress with. Had a pretty bad accident at the roller rink a couple months back and I've been out of action since then cause I badly bruised my hip.
      It's definitely a fairly miserable experience starting out, but it doesn't take long to start making progress and the little bits of progress you make get addictive and it actually becomes fun!
      I have used Asha's video courses, and imo they've been very worthwhile accompaniments to me learning. Asha's also been on hand for support by email if I get stuck on something.

      @@jesusrincon3195 I swear I replied to this. I've been on an extended break from skating because I banged my hip in really badly at the roller rink a few months back. Up until that point I was coming on pretty well, up to the point of learning to skate backwards. I once did a 22km skate, could get up to about 30km/h, could do some cool stuff like crossover and my technique was pretty good. I used the skatefresh courses, the learn to skate ones + stride optimiser. I just about got up to advanced before my accident. A long way from meekly skating from one side of the path to the other 😅

    Asha, Thank you for this video! During this pandemic, my daughter had to cancel all her sports activities, acting, and dance classes along with that she continued her education online. She understood that it was what needed to be done during this time. She loves exercising and thought it was time to do some other form instead of biking, running, and walking. So, she decided that it would be a great opportunity for her to learn Roller Blading. On the very first day, we purchased the Roller Blades and protected gear, we found your video which we viewed once, and headed out to practice Roller Blading. Need I say, on her very first day, your techniques and explanations made it quite clear for my daughter to learn on the same day! We both Thank You!!! She is loving her newly found activity, and practices daily with a huge smile.

They are a whole different level of teaching and progression, mapping out weeks of your practice in a way that ensures you get each skill safely.
      You can test out each course absolutely free by clicking on 'Free Trial' and seeing for yourself. There's 2 courses for beginners you could start using straight away. This is my best work and much better than anything I share on RUclips.
      I hope you enjoy those too.

    I'm 36 and just picked up rollerblading again after probably 20+ years off skates. On day 2 (today) I landed on my butt HARD and realized I need to go way back to basics and train my muscles up. I picked up the free trial and will probably pick up the rest of the lessons when I get paid. Gonna practice these movements without skates while my bruised butt heals and then step back into the skates. Thanks so much for the videos, they're super helpful and helping me identify what I need to work on!

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos  5 месяцев назад

      Welcome back to wheels! Well done for taking the free trial and using the movements to train off skates. This is so useful for helping your body begin to learn the new positions and as you can see from the detailed lessons in the Free trial, there is a lot of subtlety involved. Just becoming aware of where your weight falls in your feet is a huge lightbulb moment for many which needs to stay focussed when you get back on the wheels and rolling again.
      How is that going now? I highly recommend the beginner online course because it will cement ALL the basics and ensure you don't create bad habits that are so much harder to fix later on. Most skaters try to do too much when they begin and then they struggle and get stuck and give up or have a nasty fall. It's so important to know exactly what you're doing and to have a structured list of movements to practice in each session. The course comes with practice notes so you have exactly that.
      I hope you enjoy your return to skating. It's never too late.

    I love this your videos, Asha! During pandemic, I got really depressed and decided to get some new inline skates and take up skating again (which I used to do a lot of-off and on-but not for the past 10 years or so (how time flies!!). Well, I got the new skates only to realize that I’m strangely really scared to try skating again. Really scared of getting injured, even though I used to skate without padding all the time (except wrist guards!) and almost never fell. I don’t really know why I’m so scared, but I’ve felt this way about a lot of things since the pandemic. I guess it’s a stress response. Anyway, watching your videos has gotten me excited to try it again! Thank you so much! I love your energy!! ❤😊

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos  Год назад

      Hi. This is Sergio from Skatefresh Team. Don't worry! It's ok to be scared. Even though you used to skate, such a long break left your knowledge/dexterity hidden. Nevertheless, you don't forget how to skate, so what you need to do is to take it easy and give it a try. You will see that your knowledge and "muscle memory" will come back, it's just that our brains are designed to keep fresh only the information we manage often. It happens in all fields, but it's quite noticeable when it comes to motor coordination. These positions and moves Asha explained in the video, I suggest that you practice them on grass or carpet until you find your balance. Wear protective gear (wristguards/elbow pads/knee pads) and also helmet (if possible) and practice the fall and how to get up on grass too. You will find that here ruclips.net/video/64ZZJZnXJD0/видео.html The most important thing is keeping your knees bent. That's the key to avoid falling. Lots of people try to skate without that flexion, because it causes fatigue and thighs start hurting, but over time you get strength! Anyway, the grass gives you safety. Once you feel confident enough go to the park or promenade, a place without slopes. Good luck!

    Asha, this 65 y/o dude thinks you’re awesome. Even though I’m not a beginner I get a lot of inspiration from watching your videos and learn a ton. You’re just a very strong person and you really know how to teach. You’re also inspirational in terms of the injuries that you’ve had to overcome. I have a couple that I’m dealing with now and knowing that other people keep at it even when they have some physical stuff going on keeps me going as well. I learned the hard way to always wear knee pads. In fact I wear everything.. I guess what’s nice about being 65 years old is that it doesn’t matter so much if you look cool or not… people think you’re weird anyway to be rolling around on ‘blades at that age. Who cares though? Skate or die…that’s what I say.

    • @SkatefreshVideos

      Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. Well done! That's the mindset. And I'm sure people don't believe your age, this definitely makes you feel and look way younger. You're probably an inspiration for them too. Deep in their hearts lots of people would love to do this but they don't dare because they think it's too late and don't want to feel embarrassed when falling over. There is a misconception that you need to fall over to learn, or that falling over is "part of the process." Asha has created courses that takes you from zero to a high level through a safe path, and they have been used by people of all ages, so if you want to see more of her videos take her courses here skatefresh.com/learn-to-skate-online/

    Thanks! After watching, I am thinking about buying a pair of rollerblades. I used to enjoy rollerblading in late elementary and middle school, I haven't been rollerblading since about 2001 or 2002, when my pair got stolen out of my locker in middle school. 😡 Was really popular during my childhood, a LOT of 90s kids and teenagers had rollerblades and skateboards.

    Been following your channel and videos since 2019( I first started skating in the spring of 2019). Your videos were super helpful - especially to avoid these beginner mistakes. I started bold buying the Powerslide Next Navy 125mm as my first skates and it actually worked out pretty well even though I read online that it is not a good idea to have 125mm wheels in your first skates. I've been skating around Bristol for a few months now. I can pretty much go up and down any hill. I have mastered the T-Stop, and now I am looking into learning the power slide and other types of slides for stopping as I feel like T-Stop is not the best for every situation. I try not to skate too fast especially if there are cars and passer by so T-Stop is quite ok for now, but I would definitely like to get into more of a fast skating action. I am not interested in doing jump tricks or sliding on ramps. But hopefully, one day I can skate super fast across the street without worrying that I won't be able to stop properly in time. I believe that your videos saved me from falling over or crashing into things. I didn't have a single serious fall, and really only a few 3-5 light falls. I think it is pretty good for a complete beginner. So for anyone who is reading this comment - I really recommend following this channel and watching all the videos. It's a bottomless well of skating knowledge. It's going to save you some bruises, and teach how to skate properly! I am now rewatching all your videos about slides as I am getting ready to start practicing those. It is very scary though. Seems impossible to do at first!
    Thank you for this channel and all the videos you have posted so far! I'm looking forward to your future videos.

    Really love your videos! I’m a beginner and have been watching your videos to pick up in-line skating. However, my feet archs ache after a while of skating especially on the left. After rewatching my videos, I noticed that my left feet tends to drag out longer & hence my body apply pressure on inside of left foot more causing this ache (not sure if this is a right analysis 😅) would love to hear what you think!

      Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. Yeah, pronation is definitely a cause of pain in that area. It's the most common mistake in beginners. Try to keep your ankles straight and be very conscious when you tie your skates up, because a loose skate will make you pronate too.

    I'm trying to go from couch to returning skater. 10 years since I last skated. For the last week I've done one skate one shoe trying to work unilaterally and get accustomed to wearing skates again. I've been doing squats and lunges for a couple of weeks. I thought I was ready for two skates 🤣 15 minutes of shaky little step and rolls, and my legs felt like jello. It's a bit satisfying and frustrating at the same time 🙃

    Helpful video thank you :) however on here some other professional rollerblade instructors say that you need to bend the knees and hinge forward your upper body too in order to bring your weight a bit forward and avoid falling on your which can be dangerous if your upper body is straight the you fall you go on your back and you can hit the back of your head on the asphalt. Whereas if your upper body is a bit forward if you fall you fall on your hands which is safer apparently.
    As a beginner I am a bit confused gotta admit hehe

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos  2 года назад

      Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. We use a proven method that has been tested and improved since the 90s (www.inlinecertificationprogram.org) and thousands of skaters learned how to skate with this method, even some who were outcast as "lost causes" by other instructors. Asha has been teaching for about 20 years so believe what she says is exactly how it works. You shouldn't lean forwards, because head and upper body are heavy and all that weight is too much for the lower back to bear, especially if you are a beginner out of shape. Most beginners tend to have straight knees which makes things worse. That's why they have this lower back pain. Leaning forwards will also make you stick out your butt and that doesn't let your legs do these short duck steps properly. Besides, leaning forwards is an invitation to fall forwards. Whereas that's safer than falling on your butt it's not good either. The secret to avoid falling over is knees bent, nothing to do with the upper body. If you still think that a straight back is dangerous notice where Asha is placing her arms. This is something most people overlook, they try to compensate the balance leaning forwards while your counterweight is actually the arms in that position. Imagine you are playing a piano. Once you are in an intermediate/advanced level you can lean forwards for a more aerodynamic shape and you don't need the piano anymore, but at the beginning you don't have the balance to do that. Stride is something that evolves.
