  • LIVE: Pope Francis Criticised by Belgian Catholic University, Moments After Visiting
Pope Francis was sharply criticised on Saturday by one of Belgium's Catholic universities over his stance on the role of women in society, in a strongly worded press release issued just moments after the pontiff spoke at the college. Professors and students at UCLouvain, where the 87-year-old pontiff had made a speech on Saturday afternoon, said they wanted to express their "incomprehension and disapproval" about the pope's views. "UCLouvain … deplores the conservative positions expressed by Pope Francis on the role of women in society," said the statement, in extraordinary language from a Catholic university about a pope. Francis went to the university on Saturday to celebrate its upcoming 600th anniversary as part of a weekend trip he is making to Belgium. His speech largely called for global action on climate change, but he also responded to a letter to him from students and professors that had asked about the Catholic Church's teaching on women.

Why does what one man’s opinion matter? As I became an adult I never understand this

First of all: are you catholic? If not, what do you care? If you think you are then think again.
Catholic view on pope is quite strict, he is the head of the church and what he says is always aligned with the doctrine(well, should be and most often is). And if you think catholic church is out of synch with reality then tell me which one of the Big 3 is not?

I am Catholic actually. As I grow and develop more understanding of world and respect for all people. Again how can you follow an ideology that is based on what other people tell you it is rather than Universal truths. Whether a woman is or isn’t a priest is Not from God but man’s idea.

@@SamMcKinley what I'm trying to say is that church as an institution is tied with the doctrin and catholicism. I am not even sure who has the power to allow women to serve. I think only diminishing numbers of followers could do that. Also catholicism differs from country to country(if Im correct fx in Germany you can leave the church if you stop paying vhurch tax, while in Poland it is much more complicated, but please feel free to correct me). Also in some countries even really big scandals involving s.xual abuse or s.x scandals change nothing while in others they bring the church down (like in Poland and Ireland respectively). I think if fx women will be given any rights to enter chierarchy my guess will be it will happdn in Germany first.

I think her questions are understandable for the times we are living in , as a woman she has rights and is young also it's great we have a pope that can listen to her as in history it was unheard off ,in hindsight and the progress of evolution it' in these times that have allowed females to question inequality especially from a female perspective, but I feel the teachings of jesus were relevant for the times , and also they still are , honour thy neighbour is what he said, israel murder of palestine children ,,? Is not the answer I believe in relation to solving Ur ,U are your own unique individual and u are not defined by who you associate with, pope Francis has apologised for sins of others as he follows gods word as a catholic and it's a blessing that women are able to ask these questions, but jesus never wrote the bible , i believe in these times there is trouble but also more empathy, i seen studied most history and the brutel sacrifice of humans to impress gods were not moral , i think that jesus sacrificed him self in order to stop that injustice, I as in my own journey seen (omnist/omunisum) faith as a interesting fact for faith , as it recognises all religions and finds truth in my opinion compassionate truth in all, but im mainly catholic and a sinner to a human bein , but its god who decides i think thats were ego gets in the way
