Patricia Alteme maybe your Liberal Arts degree didn't pan out for you? Starbucks employee of the month with tuition payments! If you're over 23 and working at Starbucks, you're a failure in the making
Jim Lamanna failure in the making? I am going to be 26 and still working at Starbucks. Started when I was 17. Worked my way up, and now I have my own store. I’m also going to ASU which is completely paid for by Sbux, so I have 0 student loans either. My salary enabled me to buy my first house at the age of 22, which is also the age I was promoted to Store Manager. Your point is completely invalid. I have people well over 23 working for me, only to get health insurance benefits which is a paycheck in itself. Do some research on the company before making idiotic statements like that.
@Jim There isn't an age limit for success. Some people figure it out early but others struggle to find what they're meant to do. Like this person who bought his first house at 22 is a big accomplishment but it's not a rule. I know this girl who just started college at 25 years old, does that mean she's too old?. There's no such thing. If Starbucks offers tuition payments, why shouldn't a student take advantage of that?
19thHour , as long as you get the correct drink who cares? Pretty much everyone in North America spells my name wrong - can’t say it buggs me much - it’s actually pretty funny. But on another note...12 mil loss for a one hour shut down...wow, they make a lot of money!
Really? How is this ever a problem? They don't card you at starbucks to confirm you give your correct name....so...how hard is it to give a name that 1. They can't mess up and 2. You will recognize when called? It doesn't have to be Your Name...it can be your favorite super hero name, a pet name, a make and model of car...it is Just a Way to ID whose coffee it is. Add some extra spice to your order of "Coffee for The Flash"...it is just that simple.
Starbucks employee pre-training: get out black man! Starbucks employee post-training: would you kindly leave this establishment-person of a darker skin tone that i feel unsafe around? (awkward smile)
So basically, how to handle a black person in a Starbucks is... drumroll... treat them like human beings. It’s kinda sad that this has to be reemphasized.
Leander Schuster no I got it. I just wish we were in a day and age where Starbucks didn’t have to go though a whole training and instead it was just obvious.
Lol you are so simple-minded. It's a publicity move after an isolated incident. The corporate big wigs only care about the money. They are just doing this so people "forgive" them, and keep buying from them.
Klay Thompson duh captian obvious but that a win is a win they did something.... and thats better than nothing....this is America we probably didnt change they greedy lil minds... but they where adults about what happend... and what kind of red blooded Americans would we be if we didnt acknowledge that?
Chasing Autumns black people discriminate against other black people too. It's proven among police, teachers, landlords, employers... even little kids have it engrained in them pretty early, and will call a dark skinned doll the "bad" doll when compared to a light skinned one.
Research even pointed out that African Americans discriminate against darker African Americans like they themselves get dicriminated against by whites.
jayag26 yes anyone can be discriminated against. The reasons are varied from religious practice, dress, socioeconomic status, ethnicity... The list goes on. What you are referring to is called colorism.
A lot of people in the comment section should have their race card shredded. Your oppression is false. Your perception is warped. Your victimhood is taught, not experienced. Get it right.
Erroneous Monk Your arguments are erroneous. You clearly have not done any research into what happened inside that Starbucks. So arrogant yet so ignorant
Ross Parlette yeah dude, when i moved to America, i remember sneaking into the living room at night and watching roseanne marathons until 5am. She helped me understand Americans and the culture. It was an important part of my assimilation into the country, and i have nothing but fond memories. So i'm especially disappointed in her... It feels like a big part of my childhood was a lie..
XD probably... I once worked a summer job stocking shelves, at day one I was handed a full four-ring binder on rights, responsibilities and workplace safety. 3 min later it was signed as read and understood.
SURPRISINGLY, the best Starbucks I’ve ever been to was in Atlanta. Black southern hospitality = more whipped cream, service with a smile, and a “come back soon!”
LOL wow. Can't we just teach society as a whole too? Cuz worked at Starbucks before and had people throw racial slurs at my manager and coworker for their accents. Just treat people like people.
You people are crazy, I am African, Angolan, and in my country you cant occupy or used the bathroom unless you consume something there. Now if you are a known customer you get special treatment but people here in US sees that as racism, that's bull-crap. Meanwhile racist craps happen daily and you are too occupied screaming at Starbucks to see. Their reaction is also fake, publicity stunt.. Enough of your clients are upset, and instead of them calling you wrong they get a Black dude to say that they have changed and get extra customers....
+ RhodainChristJesus What was the evidence that the skin color was the difference? I did my university in S.C. and there I and other friends could use the bathroom without consuming because they new us, also i am not white... You must be a known customer. They knew we would get something sooner or later... Go often enough and you are trusted customer, and therefore you get privileges... Someone that just comes in and nobody knows just gets in and sits or tries to use the bathroom, they get nothing since the coffee place has no way to know if they will be actual customers or not.
How is Starbuck's racist? There isn't a single restaurant in all of Asia or in Europe where you can go and sit down with an outside drink and expect to be able to stay or even use the bathroom without paying. "Customers only" is NOT another way of saying "whites only".
Harriet Opoku-Boateng A lot of times they do. Here in my country the Philippines it's not that common but when it does happen the police are called. There was one time where I was eating at a restaurant and the police had to be called because some fat guy was in a tantrum all because his fried chicken was "too small" for his liking. It's already common courtesy to at least buy something in *ANY* restaurant if you plan on staying or waiting for somebody else. It's actually quite rude here or in any parts of Asia for that matter to loiter or just sit around "waiting" for someone to arrive without ordering anything. There is also something called the "CELLPHONE" which can be used to call up the one you're waiting to order their food/drink in advance.
Dickmelson Lupot lmao. The only problem with this story is they have the police records of when the call was placed and it was placed 2 mins after they walked in.
It doesn't take longer than a minute to order a latte. 2 Minutes to get booted is generous in Asia and Europe. I dare you to try and use a bathroom in Paris without paying, unless you are at Mcdonalds..which is the only place in all of Paris that you can take a piss in public.
my mother was a ninja well here's the thing you fucking dumb ass they said they were waiting on someone to order you know the white guy that came at the end and asked why are you arresting them they were waiting for me. Before you try to defend your racism find out all the facts and there isn't anything that tells them not to allow someone that's paying to use the restroom that's a future customer. Look how many people they lost because of it.
I feel for the Starbucks employees working at locations in big cities... The bathroom and no purchase required policy is going to suck for them. Starbucks is about to become an all day B&B for the homeless...
Are we fricking serious?! They weren't buying anything, they loitering. They refused to leave after they refused to buy something which is trespassing. Have we gotten THIS PC in this country?! I'm gonna go hang out at Macy's and when they ask me to leave I'll just stage a protest until I get that new outfit I want. Smh
White people were also "loitering" there, not purchasing, using the restroom, some for over an hour, none of them were asked to leave. Nobody called the cops within 2 minutes of those white people arriving. But two black guys walked in... (and they actually were waiting for someone, the dude they were waiting for arrived while they were being arrested). They should have bought a muffin, to stop the confrontation. But they shouldn't have been treated differently than the white non-customers who were sitting around not buying anything, in the first place. That manager was still racist.
quilt queen you are ignorant and have obviously been living under a rock. First off, Starbucks IS that type of environment where people can chill, study, gather, sit without buying anything and it's okay. I've sat at Starbucks for 20 or 30 minutes before I made my purchase and stayed for hours afterwards with no problem. Second, at Macy's, people walk around looking to buy and don't always make a purchase and people don't get kicked out because of it, I've also seen people sit and wait at Macy's and many other stores before, while their friends or family shop or while waiting for a ride or cause they're tired. You're comment just shows that you have a very low intelligence quotient and are probably a racist.
Erika I am loi·ter ˈloidər/Submit verb gerund or present participle: loitering stand or wait around idly or without apparent purpose. In most public spaces, such as Starbucks, the establishment requires you to order something. If not, they are legally allowed to kick you out (no skin color gets privileges)
D Man that may be true about many public places but Starbucks does not have that reputation and you said it yourself in your definition "without apparent purpose" they said they were waiting for a friend who showed up as they were being arrested. So they were not there for no reason. I've had friends sit at Starbucks and wait for me to show up before ordering. I don't know you personally so I can't say what kind of person you are but this comment shows your ignorance, at least on this matter.
Erika I am Ignorance? You serious? There are signs posted throughout a multitude of establishments, such as Starbucks, that specifically say “NO LOITERING”. Sitting on your phone, and just waiting looks like you’re doing nothing! As someone who had worked at a restaurant, ive had instances where my boss told me to tell people to order, or they have to leave. You know how many people used the excuse, “waiting for a friend”? I told each and one of them the same thing, You still need to order something. This is not a matter of race, if they were asked to leave they need to leave. They can complain about the “racism” of the store later. Also, I’m not sure how long these guys waited and how long you wait for your friends, but you have about a 10-15 timeframe to order something or you have to get the boot.
Why doesn't Starbucks just develop a system where people can write their name at the register so they don't get that shit wrong?? I wouldn't mind taking 3 seconds to write if it means I don't have to wait 20 minutes for my name to be called just to find out they got it wrong.
Danica del Rosario i don't give Starbucks my name. Call me black dude for all i care. Just give me the coffee i asked for, you're a coffee shop not my school teacher.
But... but... but... this involves treating black customers just the same as everybody else!!! I don't think the world is ready for that yet! That might be too much effort for a lot of people...
Idiots. Black customers aren't treated any differently than anyone else. Your perceived oppression is starting to bleed over into warping your understanding of the actual interactions that take place.
Aurora McFarland maybe they'll go home and be real parents too. Maybe stop having several children out of wedlock, and just maybe stop murdering everyone and each other. nah, it's just coffee
I wonder how many will resent Roseanne being punished for 'Freedom of Speech' but support the NFL executives stopping NFL player 'Freedom of Speech' (protest)?
This news story really pissed me off. Here in Europe turning people that aren't customers away are exactly what our food industry rules are. If someone is on your premises and they do not order anything, they are not considered customers and will be considered tresspassing. We tell them to leave and of they don't we call the police to either remove them or bring them to jail if they refuse. Which makes a lot more sense than allowing everyone to just crash in your store without purchasing anything, taking up the space of actual customers. This whole comment section has been brainwashed into thinking about everything as if its a race issue.
You might want to remember a few things. 1. That's the food industry...... 2. As far as I'm aware many people sit there crash there and star bucks take's no issue with it since it's there the whole deal in the first place. 3. Might wanna read up the story it's based on again itself as even the customers stated nothing was being done was wrong especially since they were not even there that long. 4 This is America, not Europe. Why in the world do you expect any decency from an almost third world country. Also unfortunately in America have a really bad habit of treating minorities like shit more than any civilized country i'm aware of.
Future Zamasu 1. Star bucks would be considered as food industry here. 2. Where is it stated that that is the deal? 3. I read somewhere that they stayed there for an hour "waiting for a friend," as a bouncer this is the most common excuse I hear. 4. It goes both ways in America, I agree its a shithole full of racists, but its not just one side being racist, I consider this a racist channel aswell because it also perpetuates the racial conflict in America by treating white and black people differently. I just feel that American law should change and that the problem they had with star bucks was more a communication issue than anything else. I don't believe the employer was racially motivated in trying to get non-customers to leave.
Starbucks' whole image is as a lounge. White people were in there who didn't order anything, some even used the bathroom, and they weren't asked to leave and nobody called the cops on them. Two black guys tried to wait there for a friend (WHO ARRIVED, BY THE WAY, it wasn't an "excuse", they actually were waiting for someone), and within 2 minutes of them arriving, the manager called the cops. That IS a race issue.
Yodalemos you have the story wrong and should probably look at it again. They were in there for 2 minutes waiting for a friend and the stupid manager called the cops on them. Maybe this is not done in Europe but here in the United States people go into Starbucks just for meetings or to study or hang out, without even having to purchase anything and it's always been okay. That's just the kind of environment Starbucks is here in the United States and is better for it. I don't think Starbucks is racist but there are obviously employees who are. I guess my daughter and I won't visit Starbucks or the "food industry" in Europe when we go this fall since I wouldn't want to be kicked out or arrested if we take too long to order. Can you please tell me what country you live in?
Leander Schuster ask them to leave if they don’t buy anything at starbucks? They have no policy that said if you don’t buy anything you will be asked to leave. Know the policies
Twoofer Derper lie? just changed the policies? We live in 2 different worlds then. It has been there for the longest time I’ve known starbucks. No gonna waste my time on such a small matter. Seat!
Twoofer Derper see!? Trying to have a conversation but someone can’t think and talk straight without insulting. That says a lot about you not me. Their new policy is about the bathroom. In my original statement, I clearly stated “you don’t have to buy anything to SEAT at starbucks”. How come I know that? May be because I’ve worked there for a year and half. Who knows 🚶🏿♂️
Writes on cup: The Black Lady LOL What's so funny, I live on a caribbean island now where EVERYONE'S name is "weird," unique, and different to me. A lot of dutch influence I believe. So the 3 Starbucks on the island only employs the locals so they know how to spell each others weird names. Coincidentally, it's my name, MY NAME they get wrong. LOL In fact in the U.S. I always walked away with a smile because not only did they pronounce my name correctly when my order was ready but they didn't have to right Black Lady but the correct spelling of my name. haha Don't be racist..
Last year My 7 months pregnant daughter was denied the use of the bathroom in NYC even when her husband bought a coffee. They tried to reason with them but finally she went to a nearby restaurant and They were nice enough to let her use the bathroom.
Racial Bias training? Seriously how does service work in America? Here we just give the customer what they want and act invisible and hope they don't see us regardless of who they are. Why the hell do people want to openly talk or call the police and make things more troublesome when there is no crime happening?
That's a good question. I'm not sure where you're from, but here in the U.S., many people are raised to believe in certain racist stereotypes. It's especially difficult to overcome these biases when the President is openly racist and Fox news (which is watched by millions) openly advocates for racist policies while denying racism exists, and accusing anyone who points out racism of being "politically correct" or being a "sensitive snowflake." It's difficult to overcome this harmful dishonesty
Here in asia, you need to order something before sitting at Starbucks/any restaurant. It's common sense and basic decency, plus it's considered rude to waste the space for actual customer. Oh, there's also a "tip box" if the shop owner decide to make their bathroom public. Someone (usually the cleaner) will make sure that you put money to the box after using the toilet.
The guys who got arrested were loitering and didn't purchase anything. Almost every establishment has a no loitering policy, they were breaking the law.
Hmmm racial-sensitivity training is not just black-white. So telling the black employees that they don’t need to attend training is also wrong. I know this is a skit - but it sends the wrong message
Wyndamn yes the daily show is ruining America. I have watch every episode ever made. It use to be awesome with 95% of it's message aligned with the truth. Now that Trevor "race baiting" Noah is the host it's just complete racist garbage. 80% lies and 19% smug liberal nonsense. I'll leave one percent undecided even a broken clock is right twice a day.
Anonymous Person I love when ppl say race baiting it’s one of the funnier white excuses for unchecked racism lol Just because you watch the show it doesn’t change your misguided perceptions and bias, you actually have to look at things from another perspective and WANT to be a better more empathetic person. So I get why it must be tedious to watch people engage in a discussion you don’t want to believe is real or more realistically you don’t want to give up your privileges to change ( I’m assuming your white because of your racial ignorance and thin skin). But the thing is rights and common decency are FREE! Imagine that! You can have respect/equality and so can we!! Maybe just examine your own racist tendencies instead of criticizing a show you clearly aren’t benefiting from. Just a thought 😉 Side Note: can you imagine how annoying it is to sit in a room and have some well meaning but intrinsically condescending person explain something you deal with and suffer because of. It must be more than tedious!
Being biased in the hospitality or F&B working enviroment it will just very normal in any country. Some workers they just hate to serve people from different races or person from different religion.
side note: i've played a TON of dota 2 (most popular game on steam i think) last couple of years, and n-word dropping in the game chat was a once in 10 matches, if that. Last couple of months, i don't know if I've gone more than one match that didn't have at least one dude (often 2-3 randos, not in a group) just dropping it non-stop. it's pissing me off a great deal, and this might be just what I needed to quit hah. I mean, chat has always been more toxic than not, it's part of the attraction tbh, but there's a definite uptick in malice (towards african-ams, mexicans, south americans specifically, and non-whites generally).
This whole thing is stupid. Those 2 black guys were trespassing plain and simple. Starbucks is not a public place, they are a private company. Go to a park or other public place if you wanna wait on your friend, and maybe don't argue with the police when they are asking you politely to leave from private property. They even asked their supervisor if it was ok to remove the 2 men and there were black cops there as well. How this got spun into a race issue is beyond me. Context matters here, not just the fact that 2 black men were arrested.
The context is how many white "customers" were also there for far longer (some admitted they'd been there over an hour without ordering), NOT buying anything, using the restroom without buying anything, and therefore "trespassing" and were NOT asked to leave, asked to buy anything, or arrested, but the cops got called on the two black guys two and a half minutes after they got in the door. Those are the literal facts of what happened there. That's why it got "spun" into a race issue. I guess if you ignore all the information, and facts, it's not racist at all! If you treat every obviously racist thing that happens as an "isolated incident" or someone being "over-sensitive" you can pretend that racism doesn't even exist!
Jessica Lee ok, but how many of those white people were arguing with the manager prior to being asked to leave, which the two black guys were. The manager didn't come up to them and just say leave or I'm calling the cops, they came to her asking to use the restroom she asked them to purchase something if they wanted to use the restroom and they argued about it. If they hadn't argued or just purchased something then this wouldn't have happened. The police on scene made sure that removing the argumentative guys was legally sound. Black cops were there and agreed that they were trespassing and needed to be removed. Come off like a dick and people don't want you around. If they were more polite then this probably wouldn't have happened. It becomes trespassing when you are no longer welcomed, which they weren't.
Yamileth Diaz uhhhh actually it’s totally mandatory. The day itself was scheduled for all employees. If you had requested the day off prior to the date announced you were/are forced to sit through it at the earliest convenience. This rule applied to everyone. As greedy as Starbucks is (I’m actually an employee), I believe they did this the right way. Anyway sorry if it sounds like a rant, I didn’t mean to sound angry or anything in this.
As a former barista of 2.5 years I must admit that I personally haven't noticed any racial bias towrads one race or another, not saying that it wasn't there, perhaps I am unable to see it as clearly as others do. I will however says this, out of the many jobs I've ever had, many various retail & corporate employers, Starbucks is easily the worst company I've ever worked for & I wouldn't recommend working for that company.
I was in the meetings today. Not many wanted to engage or recognize their faults and it was to be expected. Everyone took an issue with coming in later in the day for a meeting like this. It was said to have been a four hour meeting but we finished up after about two hours or so because of the lack of discussion.
Bellator Solis it isn't, until you apply the rule for members of one race, and not another. That is what was recorded on cell phones and posted on the news, on two occasion at different stores.
Tragoudistros.MPH >~> if they were anything like the one that started this whole mess it was probably bs, just people calling out racist cause they didn't wanna have to buy something in order to use rhe restroom
Bellator Solis Other white people did the same thing...so.... 6abc.com/amp/what-a-witness-says-happened-during-phila-starbucks-arrests/3342444/?__twitter_impression=true
Sir Cakington A random >~> Yes lots of white people call everything racist too. Everyone calls everything negative that happens to African Americans racists
Bellator Solis I'd advise you at least look at a summary of what happened. You're not obligated, but that's not what happened. The arrested guys were early, while waiting for a business associate, and wanted to be polite and wait to order together. It's generally seen as polite to order together, rather than eating/drinking before your partner/guest arrives. If your assumption of their motives was correct, you'd be right to question the situation, but that's not what happened, and it's why people were upset. People get upset over nothing, often, but this was a clear cut and documented situation.
"Hey man can I use one of your rooms for a while?" "Absolutely, If you pay for it sir, after all this is a motel." "What'd you say to me? I can't sit because I'm BLACK?" "Sir, ever heard of money? give me some of that if you want to use something which I bought by giving some of mine too."
The real question is, how many white people are sitting in that particular "motel" for free? Because that was supposed to be an analogy for what happened? Similar to the nice Caucasian woman that was sitting in Starbucks for a hour without ordering, by her own admission? Or the nice Caucasian man that defended the black men by saying he sits in the restaurant to which is known for its free WiFi and sitting areas used by millions to which 60% of them don't buy a thing? I just wanted to see where you were going with this ignorance. 👀☕
Next time your on a roadtrip and the only restroom for miles is at a restaurant I hope they turn you down for not buying an appetizer to use their restroom.
Alan Gonzalez Next time I'm on a road trip I'll be responsible enough to not be broke and buy something respectfully, plus if it's the only restroom for miles don't they rely on these very few customers they can get to run their business and feed their family? Think objectively.
Those black guys at Starbucks weren't discriminated against. I don't know why people keep pushing that. They even turned a cop down for not buying anything. That star bucks was consistent
What happened wasn't because they were sitting in Starbucks. They were asked to order something or leave. They elected to say no to both, meaning the owner had the right to have them thrown out or arrested. This wasn't racist.
When I worked for Starbucks I had a customer from Serbia and he was elated that I memorized how to spell his name with accents and all. I also never got my customer Praytcious name wrong either despite it being pronounced precious.... I had Algerian customers and some from Cote d’ivoir always made it a point to respect the name.
You guys remember that Race conversation Starbucks had a few years ago? People had to ask questions like "what is an instance where you see your privilege over minorities?" Needless to say, it was a failure. . I'm glad to see Starbucks taking better steps to address their racial problems. Certainly a step up from what they did before. Subconscious bias cannot be solved, but it can be addressed as they tried to do in this training. I'm also looking forward to less butchered coffee cup names now.
*if y'all have a hard time calling names at Starbucks, just do the number system you call a number on your receipt you come get your stuff like McDonald's*
I'm white I drive a new Mercedes and I was treated like crap at more than 1 location at star bucks. Race has nothing to do with unhappy employees. Open your eyes starbucks.
As someone who took that four hour training, i can say roy wood jr's video summed it up better
Patricia Alteme maybe your Liberal Arts degree didn't pan out for you? Starbucks employee of the month with tuition payments! If you're over 23 and working at Starbucks, you're a failure in the making
Go outside, Jim. Make some new friends

1:57 "Hello." 😩😹 Need this training where I live too
Honestly, the "writing the correct name on the cup" problem at Starbucks should have its own "shutdown WEEK."
They usually get close enough, and at least they do not just hand out order numbers.
19thHour , as long as you get the correct drink who cares? Pretty much everyone in North America spells my name wrong - can’t say it buggs me much - it’s actually pretty funny.
But on another note...12 mil loss for a one hour shut down...wow, they make a lot of money!
I've one gone a few times but I just use my middle name or the common spelling similar to my name, I would use a random common name before my own.
Really? How is this ever a problem? They don't card you at starbucks to confirm you give your correct name....so...how hard is it to give a name that 1. They can't mess up and 2. 19thHour: And what's up with refering to people who make Minimum Wage as Barristas?
Roy is a comedy force to be reckoned with
always on point, always cracks me up
Bill Cipher Absolutely.
I dont like any of the skits. The candid talks noah does with the audience is the best part
Roy is the best
Bill Cipher Oh, YES He Is! 👊😅😃🤣
Starbucks employee before training: "Get out, black man!"
Starbucks employee after training: "Get out, black man! (smiles)"
Starbucks employee pre-training: get out black man!
Starbucks employee post-training: would you kindly leave this establishment-person of a darker skin tone that i feel unsafe around? (awkward smile)
Congratulations, you just made me laugh so hard I choked 😂😂😂
Shuyu lol
Atten Shun oh fuck lmfao
Atten Shun
Maybe I should be offended... but that was funny.
HAHAHAHA "YOU WAS OPEN!"... arright Roy, you win the day.
So basically, how to handle a black person in a Starbucks is... drumroll... treat them like human beings. It’s kinda sad that this has to be reemphasized.
someone didnt get the joke
Leander Schuster no I got it. I just wish we were in a day and age where Starbucks didn’t have to go though a whole training and instead it was just obvious.
That's because racists don't see people of color as humans.
i too but i think for different reasons ;)
Bobbie
Right now, YOU are the one acting like a "victim" - LOL!!
I can't believe we have to teach employees to treat customers like the human beings they really are.

Quincy Lockett Wtf are you saying? At least proof read ya damn paragraph before you post it, holy fuck.
Ceveo Acrentos i was talking about your boyfriend my bad bro
Seriously, what the African-American Starbucks employees must be thinking....
Chasing Autumns black people discriminate against other black people too. It's proven among police, teachers, landlords, employers... even little kids have it engrained in them pretty early, and will call a dark skinned doll the "bad" doll when compared to a light skinned one.
I've gotten a lot of racism directed at me from black people. So I don't know why you're trying to excuse them.
Yikes guys all he said is what must the black STARBUCKS EMPLOYEES might be THINKING nothing deeper than that
Research even pointed out that African Americans discriminate against darker African Americans like they themselves get dicriminated against by whites.
jayag26 yes anyone can be discriminated against. The reasons are varied from religious practice, dress, socioeconomic status, ethnicity... The list goes on. What you are referring to is called colorism.
That ought to fix hundreds of years of racial bias! Why didn't anyone else think of this?!
Chris Evans it's more or less a punishment. They lost millions shutting down for that much time
Gotta start somewhere.
Chris Evans had they shut down Starbucks in the 60's, maybe Dr. King would still be here.
Better to try something than to do nothing at all - specially if it gets this much attention and might make some other businesses and people think.
captain
I hate Rachel bias. What did Rachel ever do to deserve it?
Alien OrSutin hahaha thx for the cheap laugh :)
She's a bitch. First that haircut, now the bias. That's too much.
Not understanding the phrase "We were on a break!"
@mikerspd ... you got us all there. She *was* totally out of order there ... they WERE on a break :)
Alien OrSutin derp
A lot of people in the comment section should have taken part in the training.
Preach!!
A lot of people in the comment section should have their race card shredded. Your oppression is false. Your perception is warped. Your victimhood is taught, not experienced. Get it right.
I think a lot of people have. Racial bias training just makes people more racist, rather than less.
Erroneous Monk
Your arguments are erroneous. You clearly have not done any research into what happened inside that Starbucks. So arrogant yet so ignorant
*Troy Longo* "you have not done any research"
There were literally 5 cameras in that Starbucks. They still haven't released the footage.
If Roseanne is working there, they'll need to change the name to 'Former Starbucks'.
brainflash1: No but I've heard that Steve Bannon is a Store Manager. It's located next to that KKK-Mart in Bug Tussle.
If Roseanne works there they are going to have to add how to treat Muslims to their training videos.
I recall liking the old Roseanne show, but even one episode of the new one was a bit too much.
+Timothy McCaskey ...Which largest frenemy is Kwik-E-Mart.
I would have never understood Grape Drink without Dave Chapelle enlightening me
I want that purple staff lol
Merium II same and I'm black
"I have some apple juice if you want-"
"What The Fuck is juice?? I want some apple drink... It's green"
When you apply for Starbucks doesn't it mention that they do not discriminate or allow discrimination?
this is irrelevent
I hope all jobs don't need to show they don't discriminate.
yes, they (want to) have a very welcoming policy/culture
It's one thing to have rules and another to actually take action to enforce them.
XD probably... I once worked a summer job stocking shelves, at day one I was handed a full four-ring binder on rights, responsibilities and workplace safety. 3 min later it was signed as read and understood.
2:47 Went full Uncle Ruckus there!
Sorry you couldn't make it to the training today Roseanne.
Swampy Trump. com Lmaooo
Hahahaha !!!
SURPRISINGLY, the best Starbucks I’ve ever been to was in Atlanta. Black southern hospitality = more whipped cream, service with a smile, and a “come back soon!”
"I have this disease where I forget how to read" 🤣
2:48-3:03 Legit gave me Uncle Ruckus vibes 😂😂
LOL wow. Can't we just teach society as a whole too? Cuz worked at Starbucks before and had people throw racial slurs at my manager and coworker for their accents. Just treat people like people.
"Remember, dont be racist". That should be a mantra to some. Lol
LOL especially since Roseanne started working for start bucks ... Trevor, you have me laughing so hard.. my roommates are worried
This should be an example for other companies.
This isn't an isolated event.
Enough of your clients are upset, and instead of them calling you wrong they get a Black dude to say that they have changed and get extra customers....
hjp11 i totally agree. In my country you have to consume to go to the bathroom whats the point of the toilett code anyway if you dont have to.
hjp11 You're an idiot
Okay but when a store makes an exception for one customer and not for the other w the only difference being skin tone, we got a problem dude....
+
RhodainChristJesus
What was the evidence that the skin color was the difference? I did my university in S.C. and there I and other friends could use the bathroom without consuming because they new us, also i am not white... You must be a known customer. They knew we would get something sooner or later... Go often enough and you are trusted customer, and therefore you get privileges...
Someone that just comes in and nobody knows just gets in and sits or tries to use the bathroom, they get nothing since the coffee place has no way to know if they will be actual customers or not.
I swear! He delivers gold every time.
He said "NUN IN DIS LIFE FO FREE!" XD
Meanwhile....The best part of waking up, Is *Folgers* in your cup! ☕
Roy, so clear and informative! I think I finally get it. Thank you.
How is Starbuck's racist? There isn't a single restaurant in all of Asia or in Europe where you can go and sit down with an outside drink and expect to be able to stay or even use the bathroom without paying. "Customers only" is NOT another way of saying "whites only".
I bet no one calls the police on them. The employee was racist
Harriet Opoku-Boateng
A lot of times they do.
Roy this my favorite video of yours. My husband and I could not stop laughing.
I feel for the Starbucks employees working at locations in big cities... The bathroom and no purchase required policy is going to suck for them. Starbucks is about to become an all day B&B for the homeless...
Seriously, Starbucks should have used this video instead of their corporate BS
It feels like some customers need to take these classes.
When he threw that basketball I fucking lost it XD
Erika I am loi·ter
ˈloidər/Submit
verb
gerund or present participle: loitering
stand or wait around idly or without apparent purpose.
"You gud my dude, take off; y'all ain't gotta watch none of this, you strait." Really tho? 🤣
After this everyone google dr.king’s birthday 🤣🤣🤣
"...with that unemployed piss" im dead lol
I'm sorry....how do you train someone to be a decent human being? It's not like someone will drop their prejudice just cause they attend a lecture.
"I'm sorry sir, we are out of grape drink"
Why doesn't Starbucks just develop a system where people can write their name at the register so they don't get that shit wrong?? I wouldn't mind taking 3 seconds to write if it means I don't have to wait 20 minutes for my name to be called just to find out they got it wrong.
Danica del Rosario i don't give Starbucks my name. Call me black dude for all i care. Just give me the coffee i asked for, you're a coffee shop not my school teacher.
They have that. It's called ordering via the starbucks app
you just think you're gonna walk up in here, take a shit for free?
i died
But... but... but... this involves treating black customers just the same as everybody else!!! I don't think the world is ready for that yet! That might be too much effort for a lot of people...
Aurora McFarland hey! we have to search for a middle ground lets say you can be racist from Monday to Thursday but not Friday to Saturday
Idiots. Black customers aren't treated any differently than anyone else. Your perceived oppression is starting to bleed over into warping your understanding of the actual interactions that take place.
^ Username checks out.
So does yours. One inane response deserves another.
Aurora McFarland maybe they'll go home and be real parents too. Maybe stop having several children out of wedlock, and just maybe stop murdering everyone and each other. nah, it's just coffee
I lost it at @2:52 😂 😂 😂
There were 4 within 5 min of my job, and I happily drove past and got my coffee at little Timmy’s
imanasaurus rex Thank you. Starbucks is overrated-just like Chic-fil-a. 😩
imanasaurus rex Who the fuck is Timmy?
You sound like a predator
superpenguin77664 Tim Horton’s. Seriously...?
I'm surprised Tim Hortons, Dunkin Donuts and Dutch Bros didn't do a tag team free coffee special on Starbucks during diversity day.
imanasaurus rex Whom
The lack of decent public restrooms and places to hang out are important parts of this discussion.
Greattttt!!! Nice example. Really
This is the best of Roy so far!
I wonder how many will resent Roseanne being punished for 'Freedom of Speech' but support the NFL executives stopping NFL player 'Freedom of Speech' (protest)?
I really like this man Roy Wood Jr. Someday when I get a kid I'll name the kid after him. A georgeous human being.
Yodalemos you read wrong: the two men were inside the starbucks for 2 mintues and then the police were called
Thank you trevor for not talking over your guests and also for not fake laughing
Empty virtue signalling
I'd skip the "racial bias training"
If I were an employee there
I love Roy Wood Jr.! I bet his racial bias training video is better than anything Starbucks is actually using.
nice now Starbucks restrooms are public restrooms thats going to be sanitary
mritachi15 WTF? They've always been public restrooms. Customers are the public. SMH.
"unemployed piss" Now THAT nearly made me wet myself laughing so hard. LMAO
Nice. I did not know, that i share my Birthday with MLK. Well except for the year of course.
If boondocks get's a live action remake, Roy should play uncle Ruckus.
Nicholas Chapman Hmmm Nahh he's grand PA
Nothing hard. Treat a black person like you treat ppl of yr own races.
so i can ask them to leave if they dont buy anything?
Leander Schuster ask them to leave if they don’t buy anything at starbucks? They have no policy that said if you don’t buy anything you will be asked to leave. Know the policies
mb arem I do know them, Starbucks * had* no policies but let's the regional managers decide on that matter
That is filled with irony and f*ing funny 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂I'm rolling on the floor
Writes on cup: The Black Lady LOL
What's so funny, I live on a caribbean island now where EVERYONE'S name is "weird," unique, and different to me. A lot of dutch influence I believe. So the 3 Starbucks on the island only employs the locals so they know how to spell each others weird names. Coincidentally, it's my name, MY NAME they get wrong. LOL In fact in the U.S. I always walked away with a smile because not only did they pronounce my name correctly when my order was ready but they didn't have to right Black Lady but the correct spelling of my name. haha
Don't be racist..
Mrs. Adriann what’s your name
dthetrapper haha Adriann
it’s a comedy sketch.....
Last year My 7 months pregnant daughter was denied the use of the bathroom in NYC even when her husband bought a coffee. They tried to reason with them but finally she went to a nearby restaurant and They were nice enough to let her use the bathroom.
Starbucks employee: "oooo I get it now.. treat them like white customers!" 🤣🤣🤣
Hypocrite-pride. All the way.
The guys who got arrested were loitering and didn't purchase anything. Almost every establishment has a no loitering policy, they were breaking the law.
JamesHLanier
Yes. And?
JamesHLanier
Ok. But people are also asked to leave when they don't purchase something all the time as well.
JamesHLanier
Um, yes in coffee shops. All the time in fact. What are you talking about?
JamesHLanier
So, because you never experienced something, it never happens?
JamesHLanier
And how do you know this is "most other people's" experince?
Hmmm racial-sensitivity training is not just black-white. So telling the black employees that they don’t need to attend training is also wrong. I know this is a skit - but it sends the wrong message
It either means black people can’t be racist, or other minorities don’t exist.
It's a skit so it's fictional which means it's not real...get it ???
Anonymous Person you mean the daily show??? Ruining America???
Just a thought 😉
Side Note: can you imagine how annoying it is to sit in a room and have some well meaning but intrinsically condescending person explain something you deal with and suffer because of. It must be more than tedious!
Being biased in the hospitality or F&B working enviroment it will just very normal in any country. Some workers they just hate to serve people from different races or person from different religion.
"Hey man what's your bathroom code? I wanna do some coke."
"hey man im dripping period blood and dont want it going through my pants on my way to a job interview whats that bathroom code"
spindlesthesquid "Oh man that's a lot of blood! looks like a "medical emergency", sure you can use it, just don't do coke in there."
Coop Cooper A bunch of idiots
that's gonna backfire when starbucks get full of homeless people living inside
Can we agree that this guy is not funny?
lol he's weird, he's not super funny, but he reads the lines just right.
no we cant
12 mil is nothing compared to the money they’d lost if they had not had the training.
Million views by morning
Roy Wood jr. is the greatest Daily Show correspondent ever
All this over coffee 🙄
Is that what you think? really? Nah!
This is over discrimination because they(2 black men) wanted to use the restroom.. But the white Beckys always get a pass, right?
i dieded when roy threw the basketball at the customer
Who else here heard about the "School Shooter" video game that's coming out? :P
It's a really crappy game, and the developer is just trying to cash in on the free advertising people like you are giving him.
side note: i've played a TON of dota 2 (most popular game on steam i think) last couple of years, and n-word dropping in the game chat was a once in 10 matches, if that.
Hobbes Hobbiton i did. Its just crazy
Hobbes Hobbiton they pulled the plug on this game and the developer.
This was great! Love Roy Woods!
Wouldn't asking a black customer to spell their name be differential treatment? It's not like they ever bother to correctly spell anybody's name
The training wasn't even mandatory
...neither is racism...
In was in our district, unless you had requested the day off before the training was schedules. *shrugs*
White Trump Voters' reaction to Roy Wood Jr.'s comment at 3:26: "Roy, YOUR THE RACIST!!!!!"
I was in the meetings today. Not many wanted to engage or recognize their faults and it was to be expected. Everyone took an issue with coming in later in the day for a meeting like this. It was said to have been a four hour meeting but we finished up after about two hours or so because of the lack of discussion.
>~> how is restroom for customers only racist
Bellator Solis it isn't, until you apply the rule for members of one race, and not another. That is what was recorded on cell phones and posted on the news, on two occasion at different stores.
Tragoudistros.MPH >~> if they were anything like the one that started this whole mess it was probably bs, just people calling out racist cause they didn't wanna have to buy something in order to use rhe restroom
Bellator Solis
Other white people did the same thing...so....
This guy is always FIRE!
"Hey man can I use one of your rooms for a while?"
"Absolutely, If you pay for it sir, after all this is a motel."
"What'd you say to me? I can't sit because I'm BLACK?"
"Sir, ever heard of money? give me some of that if you want to use something which I bought by giving some of mine too."
Coop Cooper of course you'd say such a thing. How cute.
ToshaTheBeautiful Kindly cite the sources and after reviewing them I'll discuss this further with you.
I'm tired of Starbucks closing because of minor incidents, bigots exists. You can't do anything about the people you hire.
Roy is the 🐐 😂😂😂 "y'all can head out, you good bruh"
Those black guys at Starbucks weren't discriminated against. I don't know why people keep pushing that. They even turned a cop down for not buying anything. That star bucks was consistent
Roy's on point!!!
People had to ask questions like "what is an instance where you see your privilege over minorities?"
Needless to say, it was a failure.
.
I'm glad to see Starbucks taking better steps to address their racial problems. Certainly a step up from what they did before. Subconscious bias cannot be solved, but it can be addressed as they tried to do in this training. I'm also looking forward to less butchered coffee cup names now.
I love you, Trevor.
*if y'all have a hard time calling names at Starbucks, just do the number system you call a number on your receipt you come get your stuff like McDonald's*
Tuna honestly I'm pretty sure Starbucks does it to try and seem personal to the customers
lemonman93 oh i see. Well i suppose it could always be a option
Tuna honestly idc either way although I do find the baristas many ways of spelling Diana quite funny
lemonman93 really? I only go in cause my sis. Never pay attention to the names 😂
I've already watched this three times, it's so good.
If your business is comedy then you've got a challenge when it comes to racism but I think this skit nails it. Very funny.
"And remember, don't be racist" - Roy Wood Jr. 🙌🙌🙌
I'm white I drive a new Mercedes and I was treated like crap at more than 1 location at star bucks. Race has nothing to do with unhappy employees. Open your eyes starbucks.
