      @@kickstand284 I have multiple nice laptops in the $1,500-$2,500 range. (all with 5th to 8th generation i7 processors & protected by legit anti-virus software subscriptions) About 5 years ago someone owed me $75 & couldn't pay, so I accepted a POS laptop (which I never use) in place of the cash. I always wondered what would happen if I installed every piece of software from pop-ups. (fake Java updates, fake Firefox updates, fake Norton antivirus, fake RUclips video downloaders, fake PC repair tools, etc) Besides the obvious risk to the laptop (which I don't care about) are there any other risks I need to worry about? My Wi-Fi password is very strong, but my only concern is they they could somehow gain access to it through the POS laptop.

    I went to a website and got an unsafe warning. I ignored and continued. When I got into the website, a bunch of weird pop-ups started showing saying people used my IP address? (I don’t even know what that is lol. If anyone knows what that is, please tell me) Honestly, I don’t even think I have an IP address. I clicked cancel on the first pop-up, and there were still 6 more on the site. I didn’t even have an idea what the site looked like! After the first pop-up, I got a bit freaked out and exited out the website. I have no idea if this was a troll or it was real, but I’m never ignoring a warning and and going on a sketchy website again.
    I found the website from a wiki page about a marvel character, and saw a thumbnail about “tragic photos taken seconds before disaster”. If you’re on wiki and see a thumbnail about a woman in a body of water with a giant snake next to her, DO NOT CLICK IT.

      I'm not sure what wifi means here, the actual protocol or internet, either way this is not how any of this works, unless maybe you bridged your VM onto your network and had unpatched machines connected. The only way for malware to 'escape' from VMs is if they have a specific day 0 exploit against the hypervisor you are using, or you horribly misconfigured your VMs (IE allowing shared folders / drag & drop).

    Wait windows defender is not doing anything? Or is it disabled?

    • @EricParker
      @EricParker  3 года назад

      It probably disabled after I installed the other AVs, but as a rule I find windows defender generally doesn't catch a lot of stuff. Not that any AV is particularly good at that. If you run code as admin, it's very likely it can do damage.
