I understand the SWB looks better, but I wouldn't mind having a LWB. I remember back in the day (before older trucks got stupid expensive) you could buy a nice LWB for almost half the price of a SWB. I have a weird soft spot for step sides tho lol My good friend in highschool, had a LWB 1983. Clean truck, 350, automatic etc. He tried to sale it, and never got any offers. He and his dad cut it down to a SWB, threw on some different wheels, and it sold the following Friday lol
I did this on a 69 and shortened the bed before finding a step side bed later. I would suggest taking the bedsides off and try and fix any dents before hand... I did mine on a old 3/4 ton for practice before trying on a nicer truck later... I didn't take the time to fix a large dent on the driver's side and it made putting back together much harder and part of the reason for replacing the bed. But the passenger side worked great. And I am not a body man.
One thing every body forgets to mention is you need to shorten the chassis the drive shaft brake lines n wires you would need a welder I seen people just bolt the chassis with plates no bueno 😎✌️
I have often thought about doing this project, but life always seemed to get in the way! I will be watching, HAPPY TIMES AHEAD GOD BLESS THANK YOU FOR THE SHOW!! I LOVE IT !!
Wait? I’m confused. I like how you did this but how come I see people cut 14” out of the frame and cut the front and rear of bed to do a short bed conversion. Can you or someone elaborate
Que bonito trabajo hermano espero con ansias el resultado final, saludos desde México donde abundan las pick up clasicas, pero la mayoria sin ser restauradas!
*This is going to sound stupid, but I've always wanted to see someone try it. Once you have the bed marked, remove the bed, and take it to a water jet facility and have them cut it...*
@@RustyDuckGarage Yup, that's what I'm thinking. I got the idea from a water jet channel here on RUclips, and I called a water jet company for general inquiry in my local city, and they told me they could cut anything....
Nice Job! i did mine also but was lucky to find a decent short bed so that save me lot of time and labor! for the rear brass you just have to move in inside the frame youv got already the same set of hole to to that! :o)
I’m not familiar with the Chevy trucks , honest question why wouldn’t you buy a short box? No hate I’m just curious if they are too hard to find or just too expensive ?
I have no clue why, but I have seen some of these trucks at shows that have been cut this way, and I think it looks killer just welded back up together and left exposed. Let it rust and all that. The patina is beautiful and that rusty cut would add to the character. Then throw a matte clear over the whole truck once the color has changed on the welds.
Exactly. Not sure why I really like them that way but I do. Some do not see it the same way. I’m more drawn to a truck with patina than a shiny truck. I’ve had cars and trucks with nice shiny paint and I felt like I had to be so careful how I drove or parked them.
@@RustyDuckGarage just sayin if you were gonna do this at the least you could of done it the right way which is changing the chassis, then cutting some from the front and some from the back.it looks funny with the tank there. Is like not short or long. This is a medium bed. 😂😂
Short bed is popular. I used to own one. But now I own the long bed. And I love long bed.
I have both. But wanted this one to be a cheap short bed.
This is one of the few trucks that looks really good as a long bed, but they all look better with a short bed. Nice truck and good work.🇺🇸

I’ve done this and found the rear crossmember moves forward about 6”, the holes are already there to bolt it in. Cheers

Ronnie. 4 inches in the front and 6 in the rear.
@@RustyDuckGarage man it looks like it's sitting level on the video like that
How do you weld it ? Mig ? Im guessing ! Not that I know anything about trucks but I would love to do this
Yes. I use a 110 volt mig welder. it is a lot of work but fun to do.
I want to see part 4 how you will tackle the frame welding
Will do.
i only have 1 question , what is wrong with the size of bed the truck bed was assembled with from the factory
Nothing. Short beds are more sporty.
This is going in my saved videos 😎
Thank you!
How do you find your spots to cut?
I know the size of the sections you cut but how do you measure for placement of the cuts from the front or back
I take it, that when you set ya laser level, you checked it was set square to the cut and that the truck bed was sitting level.
Yes sir!
What you going to do about the rear end being off? it's going to look a little funny with the rear back so far..
We will take 14 inches out in the front.
Hi a thanks for the videos Do I have to cut the drive shaft to? or What car can I get a drive shaft?
Yes. You will to have a driveshaft shop shorten the shaft.
Long bed looks way better

Awesome work, cant wait to see the end result, p.s. that k10 is F'ing beautiful

Is that a 5/7 drop with 245/55/15 tires? What would charge to do this job?
275/75 R 15 in the rear
Does this affects the way a truck runs afterwards?
I want to do it too, bit skeptical tho.
No does not effect the way it runs and drives. It is a very big project and a lot of work.
One question how are you bolting on the rear bumper
Great job !

Wheel base is the same in a short bed and long bed ???
No. We will be cutting the frame 14 inches.
Hello nice proyect is that posible whit long bed s10 year. 1983
Hello. I have not seen it done. But it could be done. Buy a used bed and shorten the frame.
How much do new short bed quarter panels cost? Would it be reasonable to shorten the inner structure and buy new quarters?
Yes. But I like the original paint.

Yes. See my other videos.

how many inches are removed from frame 20 inches total 14 up front 6 in rear? and how many out of bed
Correct 14 up front for bed and frame. 6 in the rear for bed and frame.

Yes. Only in the front. I will do that in part 4 video.
How much would this cost at a shop?
$3,500.00 for shops that specialize in this procedure.

275/60R15 in the rear. And the front is a 225/70R15 on 15 x 8 Rally Wheels

why do you like short bed that much , that's a lot of time involved, just wondering.
Thats a good question. Because every farm truck was a long bed and we rarely see a short bed running around.I guess to be different.

I will show some on this section. And more when I cut the front.
I'd do stuff like this is had had the time and skill.
Why not just get a short bed from the wrecking yard?
Very hard to find in short bed. Also I want retain the original color.
The problem is the cab to rear wheel bed spacing. Too long
