- We’re at the Moto Fite Klub race today and Travis Pastrana has his RMZILLA 500 here. After staring at it for a while, we asked its builder Ron Meredith to tell us the story about how the Suzuki RM-Z450/Honda CR500R hybrid came to be!

That's why travis will always be my favorite. Cause at the end of the day he knows, there is nothing like a 2 stroke
Beautiful machine and runs so crisp on the throttle ! Love the 500 2strokes , manufacturers seriously need to bring them back

It was ready in 5 days from.the time I got it,to the time I dropped it back off to ron.

My 85 CR500 made my arms like Jello I always loved the first 25 mins though 😂. Pretty amazing what a counter balancer does inside the engines that have it. I do dig those colors! Hot pink on the seat 👍🏼👌🏼

That is a really awsme build. I've had a few 500s over years back n day & if u got em started & they DONT HURT u sme how startn. The vibration is insane. What arm pump I cant fill my upper body. life long pastrana supporter. Trick on Trav

thanks for showing us pastranas rmzilla 500 of the mods Im sure he appreciates electric start because of his leg surgeries and with the 500's being notoriously hard to start with the harder compression and just were always harder to start. so the electric start that's genius and riding them today, they should probably all by modded as such. hope he's at red bull straight rythem again whenever the next one is and I hope to be there this time live. I'll be living in Los Angeles whether it takes place 2020 or 2021 the next one so I hope to see him there. He knows he can be wide open through the whoops with this bike and makeup time its fast there

Lol, I had 86 cr500 I rode in Red Rock canyon for year back in 87....lots of power......we all rode Dez back than and everyone had 500s....in early 80s and b4 husky dominated desert tiding....Maico spider I believe and some ktms
Hell yeah! Travis I been waiting for someone to do this u are the man and always will be but that just sealed the deal only u would ride a 500 2-stroke while everyone else is riding 450s
I road a CR500 once. The guy that owned it had to start it for me. I never shifted up after 3rd gear. I stalled it...after a mile, turning around in 1st gear...I'm still confused on why it stalled. Either way, I could NOT get that bike restarted. I felt like a complete boob as the guy finally arrived in his truck and kicked it once to restart it. I road it back to his house, defeated (and didn't buy it). Owning 250's - I could not believe that a 500 would have such an attitude! Also, that 500 was scary fast. I have total respect for the folks that ring them out. Between me and you, I think that CR500 wanted to rape me.

Anyone who used to ride 2stokes (before the shitty "Let's make all dirtbikes 4strokes" revolution), would have to be a 2stroke guy.
I, myself, included.
Perhaps if 4strokes had a turbocharger, to somewhat mimic the power curve of a 2stroke, they wouldn't be as lame. Even then though, you'll still have all the other downers that make them less fun to ride.
I'm just glad to see others bucking the 4stroke "trend".
4strokes are fine for road & light trail riding, but that is where they should stay (imho).

Many arguments when 4strokes where hitting the mx seen , they'll never last the punishment.

Motogp is returning to 2stroke 2025 that will get some head scratching , can't wait.

Formula one had talks of going 2 stroke where the pistons face each other.
The pistons would basically be using the same combustion chamber

I have seen engines like what you mentioned on other RUclips videos, featuring unusual I.C.Es. Some are amazing!
I, for one, am glad to see them (F1) try new technology and evolve. It was getting real tiresome having Mercedes dominate almost every damn race. I, for the most part, stopped following and watching it, relegating it to the highlights on the news, instead turning my attention to actual exciting racing, MotoGP!
Yes Marquez is hard to beat, but it is infinitely more of a spectacle than F1 currently. The new guys on the Petronas Yamahas will keep him honest next (meant to be this) season, but I digress!
If they do something major (like you mentioned) to shake things up, it just may renew my interest. That is of course, unless the wealthiest teams just put their vast wealth into buying an unfair advantage though lots of expensive R&D the lesser teams can't match.
Then we'll have the same old shit, with a slightly different flavour!😄

Amazing build. Thats my new Dream bike. I miss the days of the big bore 2strokers. I weighed 155lbs and was riding a YZ490 desert and woods races back in the day. But I Miss my CR500 the most.

I had a KTM SX360 2 stroke. Never had so much fun on a bike.
I was at PastranaLand 2 years ago and wanted to ride this bike when we were going to ride the track in the back. Travis said “Go for it if you can get it started”. I was so bummed... I couldn’t get it started either. How many everyday guys get to ride at Travis’ house? I wanted to make the most of the day. It was still epic, but wishing this bike had an e-button then!

I really got to check out rmzilla at the last straight rhythm. there is alot of custom parts on it. it's the ultimate big bore 2 stroke.
I raced quads but back in the 90s I had a cr500 trx...and yeah i ran a rubber mounted stem and pumped the bars full of silicone

With Travis's bad knees, I get the e-start. In reality, not very hard to start if you are committed and know the drill. The AF set up does vibrate like mad at slow speeds,, but not too bad at race tempo. I love my 14 SH500.
I remember the 502 strokes from back in the day when I was younger man those things were a beast there’s almost no one could start them the only guys I knew they could kick one we’re like 300 pound beer gut guys everyone else had to roll start
I'm about 150 pounds, I've raced them 30 years and built the service Honda 500AF bikes since starting then in 1997 (including travis's rmzilla)
They arnt hard to start if you prime them first. I've never had any reall issue starting them.
Typically one or two good kicks :)
I've seen a lot of guys big and small struggle though,and its almost always due to technique, no prime,poor jetting,old plug or worn parts.
A fresh cr500 or kx 500 fires right up if jetted well and primed.

In early 1980s suzuki had RM500 water cooled factory bikes in GPS, but they never released a production version, shame.

I had the pleasure of riding a CRF Service AF 500 back in 07 at the #PerryMountain24HrChallenge. We had to do a lot of the same tricks for vibration, we even put a #Boyesen flex grip on the left side to help with the arm pump.

You can buy a 2021 Yamaha YZ250 two-stroke . . .it's been the same model for years, but it's a brand new two stroke bike from Yamaha all the same.
Man what a beast..its been years since I've been out of the riding game, but that thing would do 200klm+ on the straight.. my rm 250 2005 model flat stick 160klm.

Adding the starter, and battery, how much more weight does it add to the bike? I'm sure it really caused a ruckus with all the suspension settings.
what about sourcing a zilla/lt500r engine? it has a counter balancer to calm some of the vibration and it would be a true rm/zilla. still an awesome looking bike.

Less shifting, precise throttle control, the crank has natural gyro effect as chassis lightens or goes air borne so handling is wonky when bike is pushed.

Does silicone in the bars work better than brass? My dad use to machine Brass inserts on the WR 500
You need XCGEAR Mako 360 handlebar clamps on there. Reduces vibration big time on a 500!

That showa suspension is unbelievable , not alot of compression but also so smoove .
And that ain't no off the shelf setup either. Hell 80 percent of riders who track their bike get the shock tuned for their weight and I would bet that TP knows how to communicate any changes he needs made.

It should have had an Old RM500 motor to be Legit! I'm sure Suzuki Japan could source a Lt500 motor or Works RM500 Motor!! Still Awesome though!!👍😉

We were notified of the project a d got Tp's donor bike about 5 days before it needed returned completed.

Yeah, I was wondering what that big hunk of metal on the side of the engine was. I was hoping he would say that it was a supercharger because Travis found the bike under powered and too slow.
I wont soon forget when I was riding my xr250 over a row of barrels that had been set up for some motocross team, thinking man this is tough, then 2 guys came out on TT500's and blew thru the barrels practically airborne the whole way.. me and my bud looked on with our jaws dropped and loaded our stuff up and went home. Its better than getting run over and squashed like a bug.

My brother's last bike was an IT 490 yamaha, and I rode cr 500....that IT had way better gearing fir dez....other 2 friends had yz490 and husky cr 500......even teenagers rode 500s in Dez cuz you needed power for hills and sand.........fun times, never even heard term arm pump back then......would ride for hrs.....all had big tanks with canteens of gas on our belts........fun times

They need to make another one but use a 1987 LT500R/Quadzilla motor that way it's truly a RMZILLA, and bonus they have a balance shaft in them to keep the vibration down
