  • Today we search for the zoomer RX-7, the Mazda RX-8. The Mazda RX8 is a rotary-powered backwards door-having little sports car covered in triangle easter eggs, and it's basically only known for what all rotaries are known for: engine problems. The RX-8 looks fun but its path is frought with danger, so we tread lightly in this Facebook Marketplace adventure.

    As a daily driver of an rx8, I can tell you right now. They’re super fun to drive; I absolutely love mine. However, once it starts breaking, you’ll become familiar with the practice of BDSM because you’ll be feeling nothing but pain and most of it will be out of your control. But other than that; Badass car that turns heads with it’s distinct sound profile.

      With the practice of adding 20-50W conventional oil every 1k miles and premixing 2 stroke when you fill up, it’s easy to make them last over 150k, used to work for a mechanic he owned a 2004 RX8 has 223,000 miles on the orginal engine and started with no issues, I currently bought mine nearly a year ago and I’ve been doing just that and regular maintenance, put 1600 miles since I bought it in may an absolutely no issues.

    My Rx-8 story: bought a 2004 in 2008, right when gas was as expensive as its ever been. Had 30k or so miles on it. The funnest car to take to redline, hug corners. Drove it until it had 1k or so miles left on motor warranty and sold it noting "still has warranty" 😂Never had a problem and kept maintenance up. Loved that car.

      Mine was 2005 bought year old. Had so many problems and mutiple lights always lit up on the dash 😂. Good thing it had a 4 year warranty as about a month left on it, it died and needed a new engine😂. After that had little issues except the check engine light came on and off the last couple years, easy fix put duck tap over the light😂. Was a fun car to drive when it wasnt in the shop😬.

    I used to flip RX8's back in high school (09/10), got to the point where I could pick one up after school on a Friday or Saturday, pull the tiny engine, do a basic rebuild if it isn't fubar, go through basic maintenance, and have it ready to sell by Sunday evening. I still have an RX8 with the original factory engine, not a replacement at 46 or 94k miles, and it's rapidly approaching 250k miles. No rebuilds, but I did yank the worthless oiler in the Renesis engine and treat it like a 2 stroke with premix on each fill up, which with a rotary is more often than should be getting like 18-20mpg (mostly highway around here in rural BFE Midwest).
    If you understand how a rotary works, they're not that bad when it comes to reliability. I'd take an RX8 I maintained over most Subarus. That said, I have another RX8, but that one has a turbocharged Ford 3.0L SHO V6 that's insane fun to drive. They were solid chassis for swaps before cars like the FR-S/BRZ/86 came around. One reason they were solid picks is you could get a straight car for like 500 bucks around the 46k mile marker for drivers on average, where lots of cars were blowing up due to the bad/weak oiler and ignorance on how to take care of the engine.

    The RX-8 is such a cool car. My father bought one new in 2005 and the Apex seals finally failed in 2015 at 180k miles.
    We debated replacing the engine with a rebuilt one. In the end he sold it for $3k as a roller and the new owner was a Mazda tech that rebuilt it and put it back on the road. And eventually used it for auto cross or some racing.

    100% agree the automatics were horrible cars… that 6 speed tho…
    Check the fluids weekly, change the oil with full syn every 5k, and drive the piss out of it. It’s always more fun to drive a slow car fast!
    The only big issue we ever had was the 3rd gear synchros going out on one of the cars.

    • @KindredAutomotive
      @KindredAutomotive 4 месяца назад +1

       good question. I forgot Mazda recommended avoiding full synthetic oil on the RX7 and other rotary vehicles.
      My comment had the RX8 in mind specifically, and I ran Full Synthetic because of the extreme temperatures rotary engines are known for. Synthetic oils hold up much better to heat.
      Seems there are a lot of Internet opinions on conventional versus synthetic oils in these rotary motors. Thing to consider is, the rotary motor injects oil into the combustion chamber, so the other benefit I always thought about was full synthetic oil should burn cleaner and have less deposits.
      With that said, some sites are saying full synthetic oils burn less clean than conventional counterparts. I find that very hard to believe, but I guess it also depends on how the oil is constructed.
      The big killer of the rotary engine was carbon deposits, specifically on the Apex seals.
      The rotary motor walks a fine line of injecting oil into the cylinder to lubricate the seals without having the fuel wash everything off completely.
      Racing beat has an interesting article where they talk about using full synthetic fluids in all of their classic race car rotary engines and they never had any issues with where. The engines actually ran 5 to 10° cooler in their testing.
      On the race car RX eight I had, I replaced the spark plugs on a yearly basis. I never saw any signs of crazy deposits building up on those plugs. On the street car RX eight, we ran full synthetic for 40+ thousand miles and never saw any issues with it.
      With all that said, if I’m wrong and synthetic oils leave harmful deposits in the engine when they are burned, then they may not be a good idea after all. The question is, are those deposits worse than the side effects of conventional oils breaking down due to extremely high temperatures in these engines? 🤷🏼‍♂️

    Y’all really need to do some research on the facelift NC Miata, you can mod the shit out of them, they have super beefy engine internals from the factory they redline at 7,500 rpm but fuel cut is at 7,700. They’re basically better than an S2000 in every way with just a couple thousand in mods, and considering how expensive S2000s are getting that’s really not a bad deal. I’d own one right now if I could fit in them but unfortunately while I “fit” it’s not exactly what I would call daily driver material 😅.

  • @JETZcorp
    @JETZcorp Год назад

    I really wish Mazda had made an RX-5 by putting that engine into the NC body. I've had enough 2-strokes in my life, I'm sure I could keep that engine alive on premix. The stock system dribbled dirty 4-stroke motor oil into the apex seals at an effective ratio of ~350:1. My Kawasaki would be toast in 20 miles if I did that to it.

    • @theodorgiosan2570
      @theodorgiosan2570 Год назад +1

      There are also parts to use the stock oil injector with a reservoir, and to adjust the ratio. That way you can use marine DFI oil which is available in enormous quantities and is ashless so won't wear the apex seals, and is designed to lubricate in engines that run 100:1 or greater ratios. Then you don't have to worry about full serve gas stations, and all you have to do is refill a reservoir. And you use less oil, and it's precisely metered. That would be my choice of how to do it.

    • @JETZcorp
      @JETZcorp Год назад

      @@theodorgiosan2570 Exactly. I have multiple old 2-strokes with oil injection as well as premix. I'm not afraid of either, but reservoir injection would be very convenient. Mazda should have set them up that way from the factory, just like the motorcycle companies did. They knew motor oil burns incredibly dirty. A clean TCW3 marine injector oil is the correct choice.

    • @theodorgiosan2570
      @theodorgiosan2570 Год назад +1

      @@JETZcorp If one wants to use the stock setup, the only way to make it work is to use an aircraft oil, preferably one intended for radial engines like Aeroshell 120, but alternatively Aeroshell 15w50 or Phillips XC 20w50. They are ashless oils like a 2 stroke oil and burn cleanly, as most aircraft engines burn quite a bit of oil. I have seen a 12A at the airport that has run on Aeroshell since new. 330,000 miles on it 5 years ago and I still see it around. Original owner, aircraft mechanic. Buys oil right there at the airport and uses an aircraft oil filter as well.

    • @JETZcorp
      @JETZcorp Год назад

      @@theodorgiosan2570 That's good information. I knew airplanes burned oil but didn't figure the oil was anything special aside from the typical aviation "everything costs 10x what it should" tax.

    • @theodorgiosan2570
      @theodorgiosan2570 Год назад +1

      @@JETZcorp Yes the oil is all ashless and it is also dispersant only, not detergent. Some like the Aeroshell 15w50 which I find also works well in vintage Subaru engines, have an ashless EP additive as well, tricresyl phosphate or now triphenyl phosphate. Which is a better EP additive than ZDDP and does not leave deposits when burned. These oils have zero metallic content whatsoever, which is also important on airplanes with regards to accurate oil analysis. They are also not particularly expensive. There are plenty of car oils that cost more than most airplane oils. Jet oils are a different story, those are ridiculously priced. Another good trick is that aviation phosphate ester hydraulic fluid works as brake fluid in a car. And is cheaper and better than most racing brake fluids. Compatible with the same seal materials. Also is purple and turns yellow if contaminated with water. Has an insanely high boiling point, like high enough to make 4 wheel drum brakes not fade at all down a steep grade. Comes in 1 gallon jugs pretty cheap. Dot 5.1 and most of the racing brake fluids are borate ester based, this stuff is related, phosphate ester based. Exxon Hyjet V is one example. Works in ABS systems as well. There are also excellent greases from the aviation world like Mobilgrease 28, which long ago used to be rebranded in a GM tube, used as the factory grease on some Oldsmobiles and Cadillacs. An excellent grease with a wear scar of only 0.6 mm. Aviation oil filters are also excellent for applications that take a Ford PH8A or other 3/4-16 thread filter. Like the heaviest duty racing filter you have ever seen. Plus a screen over the bypass valve and a pre lubricated gasket. Lots of little tricks you can learn from the aviation world.

    My comment yesterday was somehow deleted. Here again. My 2008 40th Anniversary Edition RX8 is insured as a classic car for $50,000 USD with no depreciation. I bought it new in 2008 for $32,000 USD. Only 1000 40th Anniversary Editions RX8 were made for the USA, and well kept ones are returning good auction prices. Another 2008 40th Anniversary Edition RX8 fetched $42,000 USD at a classic car auction in 2021. Look it up if you doubt it. FYI, I have owned seven rotary Mazdas since the Seventies; one RX3, two RX4, all three generations of RX7, and my 2008 40th Anniversary Edition RX8. Two of my RX7 were race-modified by Racing Beat. I have easily over a million rotary miles driven on street and track. My RX8 has upgraded mods from Mazdaspeed, Black Halo Racing, Pettit Racing, Racing Beat, Koyo-Rad, Rotary Performance and more. I have also owned a modified 2008 Mazdaspeed3 GT and other brands of performance cars. But NOTHING drives or thrills like a rotary.
