The MAZDA RX-8 is the WORST ROTARY YOU CAN BUY, but don't let that stop you

- Today we search for the zoomer RX-7, the Mazda RX-8. The Mazda RX8 is a rotary-powered backwards door-having little sports car covered in triangle easter eggs, and it's basically only known for what all rotaries are known for: engine problems. The RX-8 looks fun but its path is frought with danger, so we tread lightly in this Facebook Marketplace adventure.

As a daily driver of an rx8, I can tell you right now. They’re super fun to drive; I absolutely love mine. However, once it starts breaking, you’ll become familiar with the practice of BDSM because you’ll be feeling nothing but pain and most of it will be out of your control. But other than that; Badass car that turns heads with it’s distinct sound profile.
what ur rx8 safe word
With the practice of adding 20-50W conventional oil every 1k miles and premixing 2 stroke when you fill up, it’s easy to make them last over 150k, used to work for a mechanic he owned a 2004 RX8 has 223,000 miles on the orginal engine and started with no issues, I currently bought mine nearly a year ago and I’ve been doing just that and regular maintenance, put 1600 miles since I bought it in may an absolutely no issues.
@@vukos *whispers* Apex seals… 😏
@@thatcornfedrx8guy372 Yeah definitely, most of the time people don’t know how to care for them which is why most die prematurely.
ive been bdsming with my rx8 for about a year now. almost done.
A rx8 is good in theory but because some people treat them hondas and beat them and do no maintenance
The car actually does better if you beat them a bit.
But, you must keep up on maintenance.
Rx8 is garbage as a sports car and worse as a daily. Where are they "good"?
No you're thinking of Subaru's 😂
U mean you can't treat it like every other cars?
@@AlphaFlightredlining is actually good for rotaries, but they’re also more tedious when it comes to maintenance - especially later ones.
It’s a trade-off.
As much as RX8s get bashed for muh apex seals, they’re in progress to become the next classic because dorito and Japan.
none of them will be running by then
@@miatalife94 mine will😊
@@notdoow7851stop it lol
They're your Apex seals?
doubt it, it’s not particularly attractive and FB and FC rx7 s still don’t fetch premium prices that FD’s do
I used to flip RX8's back in high school (09/10), got to the point where I could pick one up after school on a Friday or Saturday, pull the tiny engine, do a basic rebuild if it isn't fubar, go through basic maintenance, and have it ready to sell by Sunday evening. I still have an RX8 with the original factory engine, not a replacement at 46 or 94k miles, and it's rapidly approaching 250k miles. No rebuilds, but I did yank the worthless oiler in the Renesis engine and treat it like a 2 stroke with premix on each fill up, which with a rotary is more often than should be getting like 18-20mpg (mostly highway around here in rural BFE Midwest).
If you understand how a rotary works, they're not that bad when it comes to reliability. I'd take an RX8 I maintained over most Subarus. That said, I have another RX8, but that one has a turbocharged Ford 3.0L SHO V6 that's insane fun to drive. They were solid chassis for swaps before cars like the FR-S/BRZ/86 came around. One reason they were solid picks is you could get a straight car for like 500 bucks around the 46k mile marker for drivers on average, where lots of cars were blowing up due to the bad/weak oiler and ignorance on how to take care of the engine.
I also have a RX8 at 72700 miles, how tf did you get it to run 250k miles? Looking for actual advice
@@Dacraft_190k on two of my oem engines. Remove oil metering pump.(doesn’t burn oil from pan). Allow the car to properly warm up (let it idle till it drops below 1000 and drive till the coolant needle stops moving *operation temp. Redline a week. And try to operate the car around 3k for cruising. The engine needs to spin so the oil can properly circulate. And maintenance
@@Dacraft_note once you remove oil metering pump you would need to run 2stroke oil. And then run 10-30 synthetic. Synthetic and premix are not recommended unless oil metering pump is removed. Premix and oil metering pump it’s over saturating everything which could lead to premature wear on fuel pump, and faster carbon build up so… if you have a pump drive how it is no premix if oil metering pump is removed run synthetic for engine oil and premix your fuel
We had two and I loved them. Basically a 4 door Miata. I always heard the engine issues were because people never spun the engines high enough, IE the automatics.
100% agree the automatics were horrible cars… that 6 speed tho…
Check the fluids weekly, change the oil with full syn every 5k, and drive the piss out of it. It’s always more fun to drive a slow car fast!
The only big issue we ever had was the 3rd gear synchros going out on one of the cars.
I drove the RX8 more than my DB9. Totally different cars but you can have more fun in the RX8 without reaching “straight to jail” speeds 😂
Hummmmmm RX8 and a DB9
Both cars from need for speed carbon
People don't understand how fun usable power is
The RX-8 is such a cool car. My father bought one new in 2005 and the Apex seals finally failed in 2015 at 180k miles.
We debated replacing the engine with a rebuilt one. In the end he sold it for $3k as a roller and the new owner was a Mazda tech that rebuilt it and put it back on the road. And eventually used it for auto cross or some racing.
I'm super impressed that the seals lasted so long, I thought it was basically guaranteed they failed at 80k miles. Seems like he drove it carefully and took good care of it.
@@CockatooDudeusually it’s the other way around: rotary engines do not like being babied. The maintenance requires fuel mixture and more oil/lubricación than normal. It makes sense since this isn’t a piston design.
😬 to each their own opinion..
I bought my RX-8 with no key at a police auctuon for $675. A new radiator and key later, she was driveable. Ive been restoring it and dalying it on the way. As king as you have the right supporting mods and do regular maintainence, theyre great cars.
That’s why I ditched the Reneses and put in an REW. It’s a great handling fun car.
And yes it causes me enough pain now to where I don’t have to cut myself anymore.
Lol
... cooling system upgrades stonks
Also premixing XD
The 13b-MSP has better housing than 13b-REW, but REW has better rotor and apex seal than MSP.
Many rotary mechanics use this recipe to create more reliable rotary engine
Should have stuck with the MSP. More reliable without that turbo bs and vacuum hose spaghetti
I showed my cousin the intro of this video, it was so good that he was on the floor foaming out the mouth
Sunvisors work perfectly fine. The sun doesn't go through on the angle, but if you tilt down your head while waiting for lights to go green, you can see them. Been driving mine for 3 years now, never had any issues with sun messing my view.
I know it’s just a suicide car but I’ve been in love with the RX-8 since my childhood and still would love too own one. That being said, financially I can’t willingly throw myself into a cash chasm because the car is trying to off itself constantly.
They're not quite that bad. But you can make them reliable. Just budget for two extra RX-8's so you can upgrade the oil and cooling systems. Once you get those two sorted, just regular maintenance and a yearly engine refresh.
It only offs itself of the owner neglect's it. So thats why they suggest buying a good shell to throw a remanufactured(rebuilt) engine into it. Then take care of it.
Buy a good one and trust it right and you’ll be fine. They drive absolutely sublimely when rung out too 👌
That car is like a borderline big titty goth gf . if you hate yourself take it.
Fanboys will pretend statistics and trends don’t exist or matter and say “bUt iTs noT tHaT bAd”, I swear I would see the same shit in a Range Rover video, probably the worst track record ever.
If a tree fell on an rx8, what was the tree doing in the kitchen 😂😂😂😂
They're like the one car that the ls1 swap meme is actually a good option
I’ll admit, the rotary isn’t for everyone. But hot damn do I want one! It’d complete my Mazda garage. 😊
You can always get one of the earlier (non -FD) rx7s, great little cars!
Imagine for a moment they had introduced a turbocharged variant labeled along mazdaspeed line
I loved my rx8 but sadly being broke outta high-school I had to sell it because I couldn't rebuild the engine.
My Rx-8 story: bought a 2004 in 2008, right when gas was as expensive as its ever been. Had 30k or so miles on it. The funnest car to take to redline, hug corners. Drove it until it had 1k or so miles left on motor warranty and sold it noting "still has warranty" 😂Never had a problem and kept maintenance up. Loved that car.
Mine was 2005 bought year old. Had so many problems and mutiple lights always lit up on the dash 😂. Good thing it had a 4 year warranty as about a month left on it, it died and needed a new engine😂. After that had little issues except the check engine light came on and off the last couple years, easy fix put duck tap over the light😂. Was a fun car to drive when it wasnt in the shop😬.
And the next owner didn't take care of it and it blew up on him or the 3rd owner and car gets a bad rap.
It usually is called "Thin (colour) Line" not just "(colour) line" blue is for law enforcement, red is fire service, grey is corrections, green is military, yellow/gold is dispatchers & white is EMS. The reason it's a thin line is because it's supposed to represent the few who dedicate their time and lives to protect the general public (top) from "chaos" (bottom). So effectively it represent the thin line between the public and the dangers held at bay
Quite a rainbow flag im glad they all have a non hetero little club
What's crazy to me is that you would think people would buy the blown ones and just swap them with the rx7 13b on a standalone. It should fit perfectly and have even more space in the bay for cooling.
Or just kswap them, I know its the basic go to swap but there's no better candidate then the rx-8 as it has a great chassis.
hard to daily something like that when you need to pass emissions to register the car which makes it too much of a "toy" for most people
@@jaredthrockmorton2025 This why it's best to live in a state with no emissions or inspections.
These were originally suppose to be a 3 rotor but they scrapped it im pretty sure.
Problem with swapping in a REW engine instead of the Renesis is that these days most 13b REW's are not much more reliable than the Renesis because of the age. You'll end up rebuilding it and doing the same mods and the same upgrades to it that you'd do to the Renesis to make it reliable. And you'll still be premixing...
bought mine a few years ago with 70k miles. It's at 90k now and I've been lucky enough to have no issues.
It's around like 100-120k they start having issues from what I've mainly heard
And most of the ones i see for sale around that mileage have a blown engine or have had a rebuild recently
I don't know what I'd do without this channel. You all keep me so entertained, love the discord too. I was wondering if anyone has a link to the 350z, 350z song? I don't own one but would like to blast it out of my nissan whenever I see one.

As an RX-8 owner, I feel attacked lol
This is absolutely nonsense. The Renesis is the BEST and most reliable rotary ever made, notably the S2 (09-11). But what do I know, I don't put bs youtube videos together.
This... keep spreading the truth. True owners know. Internet destroyed the reputation of these cars.
Holy shit, My Dad works at S12 as well!
I have a k24 on a stand and an rx8 shell is only $1500 where im at...
Our previous tenant had a very clean RX8 with huge fake BBS rx, he kept it about a year he was always driving his gf pos jeep patriot because he was scared of it because it has "signs" of imminent failure, he finally exchanged it for another oil burner, a very shitty 2.0T A4 with a nasty ground effects kit... Some people have such a luck finding creampuffs 😂
RX-8 also featured in X-MEN 2 movie LOL!
Former RX8 owner smoker. And Turkish Golds are the answer. And you can't cut them off cold (flood it) and if you cut them off at temp and the seals are on the way out you have to wait like a half hour before it will restart. Hence why you need a good battery. And the RX8 and the NC Miata share the same chassis. The NC Miata is a reliable RX8 with roughly the same HP
I'll come in to defend the NC miata that you guys seem to hate. In 2009 they had a big update. Forged internals, higher rev limit, suspension changes, lowered over an inch I believe. There is probably more but NC2 and NC3 are much better than 05 to 08 model years. Jason Caminsa said same thing as you guys till he drove an nc2.
They are good cars, I am the person who wanted to trade theirs for the NC Miata lmao
Rx8 and NC miata share the same chassis
Average rx8 smoker smokes Menthol Lights. XD
got my rx8 a week ago not running because crank shaft position sensor needed relearned. did that didn't run found out previous owner bypassed the clutched ignition switch because they wanted a pushbutton. the bypass in question was a looped exposed wire in the connector got the original switch back in got it to run after pulling plugs to unflood it been driving it ever since and she passed the compression test with flying colors which makes me believe they did indeed get the engine rebuilt not long ago
all of my homies hate rx8s

I have a love hate relationship with RX8s. On one hand it's a amazing handling car for hitting the touge with all the boys, on the other hand... it's an RX-8. Maybe one with a K20 swap or something would be cool
A K20 swap sounds like a great idea. That’s what I’m thinking of doing once I have enough money for a good RX-8 shell.
Yeah I've been thinking a k swap or maybe a junkyard Ls if there's enough room under the hood.

Love the channel y’all are one of my favorites. Y’all are real.
Would love to see more domestics tho
Y’all really need to do some research on the facelift NC Miata, you can mod the shit out of them, they have super beefy engine internals from the factory they redline at 7,500 rpm but fuel cut is at 7,700. They’re basically better than an S2000 in every way with just a couple thousand in mods, and considering how expensive S2000s are getting that’s really not a bad deal. I’d own one right now if I could fit in them but unfortunately while I “fit” it’s not exactly what I would call daily driver material 😅.
I impounded one of these someone dumped. I think a junkyard bought it from the auction eventually.
