Now my Blu-ray player is able to read 4k blu ray and rip discs, but it isn't playing them in software like PowerDVD and DVDFab. Do you know the reason?
good video, i bought asus BW-16D1HT from my local store and i will flash rom myself, i hope everything will go well :) EDIT: I just think there is a bit too much scaremongering in this video, i got just couple of months old drive(manufacture date) and didnt have any issues flashing it to libredrive. That dude basically sells at 2x price what is essentially 10min procedure and if prepared under 10 secs.
Just a quick update, got my 16D1HT, it was manufactured in march, 2021. It had 3.10 firmware version and with "SDFtool flasher" and custom MK firmware downloaded from make MKV forums, i flashed it in less than 10 seconds. Everything works fine, its fully libredrive now. Very happy :)
Not fearmongering, I just don't want to be responsible for people bricking their drives. I've had great success buying several drives from the person in question and was very happy with the results, so I shared my experience. I was informed through digging through forums, etc. that Asus is making it so newer drives can't be "downgraded" on firmware so you have to get drives with the right firmware/date code. Whether or not they stopped this practice I'm unaware of.
2X the price i think not. And once the drive has been flashed I spend another two hours ripping a 4K UHD blu ray, 1080p blu ray and a DVD with the drive to ensure it works properly for the end user.
@@alexcoluzzi well it depends on the region, im in EU and from my local pricing assuming that these prices in the video exclude shipping costs, its pretty much 2x price for me if ordering from this guy, locally i can get brand new BW-16D1HT for 70€ + 2.5€ shipping cost to my doorstep. From this guy $133 + 20-35$ shipping cost = ~155$ aka 138€, double the cost.
@@TheN3tw0rq since this post has been slightly resurrected by other guy i just wanted to say that saying clear blank statements like in 5:43 that all models that are newer than 2019\2020 cant be flashed due to manufacturer efforts has been clearly debunked at least from my example. Look i have nothing against that guy hustle but you could at least give disclaimer that it may not be completely true and do your own research or something along those lines, im sure it was not your intention but with what you said in the video its slightly misleading. Just my two cents.

Can I use the LibreDrive functionality outside of MakeMKV? I rip my non-4K Blu-rays as ISO images and then strip the copy protection with DVD Fab. I want to know how possible that is with a 4K Blu-ray.
I'm not sure, but there is an easier way, MakeMKV has a backup functionality that outputs a BDMV directory with all the BlueRay contents, if you want you can ask MaskeMKV to decrypt videos. It doesn't output an ISO file, but you can make one from the directory it creates if you want. This is actually a great way of doing it. I usually buy my BlueRays, rip and decrypt them using MakeMKV and then play them with VLC, if VLC complains then I just use MakeMKV again and make an actual MKV file.
@@EpicB Yup, exactly. I'm not sure why exactly you want it to be in ISO format, but you can do that. If you need it to be in ISO so that DVD Fab that strip the DRMs, there is not need. MakeMKV will already remove the DRMs, but if you want ISOs for archival, sure, you can do that.
Hello I have a question about installing this Blu-ray drive. Does it support 6gb SATA transfer rate? It only says "SATA" but not what speed it supports .. thanks
@@m1dnightcrisis there are 2 different SATA speeds 3GB/S and 6GB/S .. I found out that a Blu-ray will use the lowest SATA speed .. that's probably why it only said "SATA" on the drive.

Just bought the same unit as my 1st blu ray drive for PC off ebay running a pre flashed custom Firmware 3.01DE. I'm not sure if that is the same firmware your running. looking forward to receiving mine in the post in the next day or two. Can't believe how expensive the 100GB blank discs are though !!!! I ended up buying 10 x 50GB discs just to try out for backing up some PC games / software etc. I have a couple of South Korean and Japanese blu ray movies to back up and serve to my big tv hopefully like yours my drive will be region free also.
I have a LG WH16NS40 and I was told this drive has libre drive in order to deactivate the copy block on it. I made it an external dvd drive. How can I get this feature to work?
The one I ordered came with no location assigned and it works anyways with Make MKV - I don't really understand why I would need to firmware changed . Guess I will have to watch the video here again to see what I missed ???
What is your computer case? I want a new build that would allow me to put my optical drives on the inside of the case, they don't make anything to support that anymore.
This is odd. From what I understood of your video, a normal DVD drive should be able to copy/decrypt DVDs, but I have tested 3 drives, and it just don't work very well. Are you sure the drives don't need custom firmware to read the data? Am I misunderstanding something?

Any software I try seems to lock up at the same "spot" it simply can't read it and gets stuck in the process, eventually fails after some time. The disc have no scratches. Edit: It just occurred to me. Could this actually be about some special dual lay discs?
@@Mr_Wh1 The drive might be set to the wrong region for the disc. Did you make sure the drive is set to the correct region? The disc should tell you on the back of the case. To change the DVD Region right click the drive on File Explorer, then go to the Hardware tab, click the drive then click the Properties button, you should then see a DVD Region tab.

@@TheN3tw0rq The DVD is a region 2 disc and the drive is set to region 2. I am allowed to change the region on the drive an additional 4 times before it's "permablocked". The drive I am testing it on, is a SN-S083C.

I am a bit puzzled with regard to Alex. I emailed him a couple days ago and when I didn't hear back from him, followed up next day with a text message, but as of today still no word. HDR is contained on the HEVC stream, if you compress the video its going to be ruined, if you remux to mp4 i think it should be fine (still no point because it is going to be the exact same size as the mkv file) + mp4 supports less stuff
I really don't understand this LibreDrive stuff. Oh, I get the technical explanation. But there are a variety of commercial BlueRay rippers that claim to cut through encryption. DVDFab, Leawo, other options. Why buy a pricey, jiggered old drive just so you can use makemkv software? You aren't saving much $ if any. I'm actually asking a non-rhetorical question, maybe there is good reasoning.
Speaking of running out the LG WH16NS60 is now at end of life status (EOL). I guess LG has gotten sick of us blowing these things up ripping 4K discs. No news on what will replace it.
I bought a used drive off ebay and flashed it myself, it wasn't that hard. What you're paying for is him doing the work and taking the risk. TBH, it's not really that hard, the instructions I saw made it seem super complicatd, but it was just a matter of downloading the appropriate flasher and an appropriate firmware and flashing it. I even screwed it up the first try by not checking the button to encrypt the firmware and I was still able to just do it a second time and get it working. I wound up needing to cross flash due to timeouts with the "proper" firmware. But, that was pretty quick to figure and and do, now the process is working nice and smoothly without any scary noises from the drive.
@@TheN3tw0rq My 4k disc is looking like it's going to take an entire day. I only have one 4k disc with no interest in buying more, so I can live with that. The regular bluray ones are much faster. EDIT: I wound up using crossflashed firmware and it got a lot easier.

He was highly regarded on the MakeMKV forums and I wouldn't have recommended him otherwise. I am not in the business to promote scams. I would suggest sending him a follow-up e-mail regarding your order, he may be overloaded and has to catch up on orders. I have only seen one other comment on here about Alex not shipping their order, and claiming I'm a scam?!! The commenter deleted their comment before I had a chance to reply to it. So I'm not sure if that was just a troll, or if their issue was resolved... If I see any more comment suggesting such, I will contact Alex myself personally and see what's going on.

Dataspeed is limited to the drive's and disc's capability. SATA is just the connection to your PC

Glad I bought a Pioneer BDR-XD07UHD that came in unpatched. It was just plug and play with libredrive.

If you just want to burn an ISO image (or bluray file structure), then ImgBurn is great. Been using it for over 15 years.

I've heard that you don't necessarily need to flash the drive anymore for LibreDrive to work, but maybe I'm wrong.

You only need it if you plan on ripping 4K Blu-rays. If you are sticking to 1080P you don't necessarily need a drive with libre support.

Handbrake now supports full HDR and Atmos support, even with compression.

Why would you want to?
You'd have to reauthor it to make that happen. It's probably easier to just buy DVDs if that's what you want.
