It's really can be helpful for oldest PCs and for larger scenes. Really worth time in Photoshop to prepare texture for further work! Thanks a lot for the tutorial!
That's how all game studios do it to optimize their games so they run smoothly. I learned this trick in uni, really shocked me how much it shaves off the GPU and render time! I'm glad you liked it :)
That's definitely possible, but you would want it to be a separate program, since you don't want to load any unnecessary textures into blender, it's a pain getting them out once they're in
