@@BaeBunni *I don't think he thought he was doing better than the celestial dragons.*
*I think Arlong even wanted to be worse.* It's like how in a fight when someone hurts the other, the other wants to hurt them back more than they were hurt. It's that push and back mentality of people trying to outhurt each other. As long as they're are striking back, they justify it as "doing the same they did to me".
Which is also why his idea in 15:29 would never work. People would hit back even harder. And he knew that, which is why he was bribing the navy.

I don't know what's more accurate, but my translation of Fisher Tiger's line in the manga said more like "I'm no longer capable of loving humans", which, accurate or not, did hit harder. Despite all he did for Koala out of pure altruism, not even she could break through that, really recontextualizes him feeling uncomfortable holding hands with her. The fact he was able to hold onto that righteous front despite his mutilated soul speaks volumes of him.

After the fisher tiger flashback, I understood Arlong a lot better than before. Of course everything he did to humans and especially Nami and her village was terrible, but it’s understandable of why he thought that was the right thing to do. I want to believe that when Koala went to her village, the tiniest part of Arlong started to understand what fisher tiger was taking about, but when the navy attacked, that part went away. In the end, wherever Arlong is now, I want for him to have at least a somewhat happy ending.

He took his hatred out on a random village in the middle of the weakest sea because he was too weak to tackle the real problem. In the end it was his own demons that kill him. In a fucked up way it was his time as a slave that killed him. @mousecar23 Месяц назад +1

I read it way different. The way I read it was that Tiger hated all humans for what the Celestial Dragons did to him, including Koala. That's why he struggled to hold her hand, why all his smiles around her look really forced.... he knows it's not her fault but he can't help himself hating humans. He forced himself to be kind to her because he knows that all cruelty would accomplish is to make her hate fish men, and to what gain? He'd still hate humans and she'd feel justified hating them back.
Koala didn't solidify Tiger's ideals, Tiger pulled a Shanks and gave up his pride for the future generation.

I really love Fisher-Tiger's character. It would be so easy to just make him the most kind hearted dude ever. But the fact that we learn that he himself carries a darkness so deep that he would rather die than receive human blood adds a whole new dimension to his character. Deep down he is incredibly racist himself and despite trying his best to contain it, it ultimately ends up costing him his life. And I think it's so powerful we find out that he did indeed die to racism, but it wasn't really any racism from humans, but his own racism that killed him in the end.

Fisher Tiger's final moments were one of the most tragic and beautiful moments in the entire series. It shows he's not some "you're full of hate and racism and I'm not" hero; it's a sad truth that nobody is immune to the pain and the propaganda of hate, and showing that Fisher Tiger recognizes that he feels the same hate Arlong does and is actively struggling to fight against it and do the right thing regardless of how he feels... holy crap, it was SO powerful, and makes you realize the tragedy of all that was going on, and makes you respect Fisher all the more, knowing that he is actively feeling the same suffering and hatred Arlong and the others are... perhaps even more, considering what he went through... and yet he still held true to his morals. It shows just how much of an absolute legend he was.

Saving Koala was, deep down, a way of Fisher Tiger negotiating with and reclaiming his humanity back from his hatred. A way to diminish his trauma of being slave, which had him so conflicted and confused. Just after delivering her to her hometown, he was met with reality's "final answer" on the matter: there was never any hope to begin with. "Humans are scum." Of course we as the audience know differently, but can we really blame him for his final decision? Of letting his hatred/trauma win? That's why he's in my top 5 flashback characters.

But you can see how uncomfortable he was when Koala grabbed his hand on the way to the village. After escaping he could've just embraced the hatred and let it rule his life the same as it did for Arlong, but he fought to keep all of the darkness deep within his heart and not let it defy him. Wanting to be better than the monsters he saw, he tried to so hard to keep all of the resentment from spreading to others and lead them on a path of hatred for humans.
Still, at the very end when he saw another glimpse of the evils of humanity and what little hope he gained from seeing that there are people like Koala, got snuffed out in an instance, and the demon in him consumed him.
In his final moments he had choice to make, let go of his hatred and live, or die rather the have human blood in his veins, to own humans his life.
Sadly, it was too late for him.

"see like the extremism" to be fair, I'm with Arlong here. Not that Tiger is wrong (he's going very hard into the idea of not transmitting their trauma to anyone else which is insanely cool of him), but it's also tragically understandable to kill the people who are chasing you to take you back into literal slavery. Arlong was a piece of shit for what he did to Nami's island, but he's not wrong in murdering those marines. Now when he justifies that by saying they're "lowly creature" talking about humans in general, yeah that's the snapshot of who Arlong will be in the future.
As for the branding, I'm always a bit wary of tough love in media and anime because I think it's based of misunderstanding of how psychology actually works but here it's the solution to a physical problem. Sure that physical problem has mental ramifications, but at the core of it Koala cannot live her life safely if they don't erase the mark. Violence as a way to teach is common (and imo stupid) but this is a rare case of a situation where I can understand the thought process and agree it's actually for the greater good.
The Macro gang is a special kind of bastards. They rode with the sun pirates and became slavers? Dude, that makes you worse than fucking Arlong. Their only redeeming quality is that they might be too fucking stupid to understand the consequences of their actions.

  • @merlinsmusings
    @merlinsmusings Месяц назад

What Alicia says about racism being learned is spot on. Ever see South Pacific? "You've Got to Be Carefully Taught."
And then there's how Arlong, ultimately, is just plain wrong. He thinks inflicting enough pain, suffering, and death on the humans will keep them from coming back and hurting the fish-men, but we already know that's not true. He made Nami hurt, and made her village suffer in fear, and made her mother die, and what happened? The village revolted in anger, the Straw Hats attacked in their wrath, and everything Arlong had was destroyed. Inflicting suffering doesn't prevent revenge at all, it causes it. That's what revenge *is* by very nature.

With the whole militaristic view, focused more on protecting their own against the government who actively wants to harm and control them. Even the internal fracturing of extremist views feels pertinent to what happened to the BP's.

I think this is the perfect solution to racism. Accept and try to work on the ways that you are racist yourself; but most importantly, don't pass it on to the kids. Kids don't know racism, put them in schools when they're too young to get it and they just get on as kids normally do irrespective of race. The racism is something that's learned.
One of the aspects about this that is constantly getting passed down is the obsession of race. This little girl shows that race is not the defining aspect of what has happened in the past, despite it being a factor. The defining issue is the behaviour itself. Revenge is merely something angry people use to feel better about themselves by ripping others down; after you get it, you realise the amount of time you've spent wasting it on people who don't give a shit about you when it could've been better spent building yourself up. Some, like Arlong, use it as an excuse to be the very thing they hate (Which has already been supported by Orwellian language attacks like "reverse-racism").
It's as Morgan Freeman has been saying for years. If you want people to stop obsessing about race all the time then they need to do the same; otherwise we just teach our kids that too.
Slavery, for example, was never about race. It was about vulnerable groups being compelled by stronger groups; the same story is told in every countries history against others and against themselves. The reason every associates slavery to racism is because of America and the transatlantic slave trade, which due to America's obsession with race can only ever be seen as a racist thing first.
Tiger was racist, but he was also noble. He knew that it was evil and he hated it, but that's how he felt; so he knew that the most important thing was to not pass down that hatred; because despite wanting to get rid of it he just can't get rid of the damage it's already done. Kids learn from us, and they learn by our actions much more than they do our words; do we want them to learn from characters like Fisher Tiger, or do we want them to learn reverse-racism with Arlong?

Upon thinking about it, I think Macro is worse than Arlong. We at least have a reason for why Arlong does what he does.
However, Macro decides to be a kidnapper for slave traders and exclusively captures his own kind. We can't even say he's greedy since they clearly aren't paying him diddly squat given how broke he is.
Jimbei decides to carry Fisher Tiger's dream, Arlong decides he's going to carry out vengeance and Macro decides he's going to be the number one supplier for fishman and merfolk slaves.

Hoo boy. This flashback. This one is a doozy.
Very ironic that Arlong went from bringing this cute little redheaded former slave home to...taking the home away from a cute little redhead and enslaving her.
Unfortunately, despite all of Fisher Tiger's wishes, Arlong inherited the hate he was ashamed of just as Jinbe inherited the honor he yearned for.
