The thought of walking around an entire amusement park without something as little as the chirp of a bird is absolutely unreal. Must have felt dream like.

Hey all, I'm the model from the first photoshoot (daytime one). I can't believe how many hits this has gotten- it's crazy and awesome!! I thought I'd tell you my experience in the park since a lot of you would like to go but may not get the chance:
Short backstory-It's a few days before Christmas. I get a message from Jason via Model Mayhem- he's in N.O. from L.A., his shoot got cancelled, he's trying to do a photoshoot at the abandoned six flags the next day, would I be interested? I'm an actress, not really a model, not sure about the shoot until I see some of his work- it's stunning, so I'm like ok I'm in!!
The next day we set out in with 2 assistants in Jason's SUV. We lucked out and had gorgeous weather- low 70's, partly cloudy, a bit windy (as you can tell from some of the shots.) When you get off at the exit from I-10, there's really not much else there - some small suburbs but nothing commercial. The area is below sea level and surrounded by water- bayous on one side, Lake Pontchartrain on the other. If you keep going south on that road, you'll be in the 9th ward which was hit hard by Katrina and never really recovered.
This was my first time ever in any abandoned place. I didn't know what to expect, was picturing myself hopping a fence, fighting off snakes with a stick and needing a machete to get anywhere. It was in a lot better shape than I thought it would be- no problem getting in- gate to parking lot was open, we just walked in, across the lot, and around the ticket stiles at the entrance. There was a lot of debris at the entrance- broken boards, trash, employee badges, ticket stubs, etc. I thought about picking up the few disposable cameras that were lying around but didn't. Now I wish I had. It could have made a great photo exhibition or something now that I think of it. Maybe if one of you makes it there you can look for them :)
Almost right away we encountered a group of teenage boys- they were wandering around inside the french quarter-style buildings, throwing stuff out the 2nd story windows- old computers and phones. Guess that's what was left after all these years. Jason told them to stop destroying the place and get h*ll out. They didn't want to mess with him so they left. I wandered around for about half an hour taking pics w/my phone while Jason unpacked all his gear. Walking around the park is like being in some kind of dystopian wonderland. It's kind of got a 'Return to Oz' meets 'The Walking Dead' vibe. It draws you further and further in. You want to keep going until you've seen the whole park. I got about halfway before I had to turn back b/c there wasn't enough time. It's really quiet- no birds chirping, can't hear cars on the road. No animals in sight. Every so often the ferris wheel would creak and turn a little bit. There were metal doors leading to the employee area by the bumper cars that would swing open and shut with the wind- scared one of the assistant's to death haha!
So we get back to the entrance area. Jason is setting up, almost ready to shoot, I get changed. Boom! Cop shows up right after I finish getting the dress on, yells at us, wants to see ID's (we never did give them) asks why in the world anyone would want to shoot here (seriously). I wish one of us was recording during the confrontation- at least audio. It would have been a great addition to the video! So, the cop throws us out before we get a single picture. We walk about a mile back to Jason's SUV, super disappointed. Back in the car, one of the assistants suddenly realizes she left the wedding veil (that we have to return along with the dress) inside the park. She's apologizing, all upset, but then we realize this actually gives us a legit excuse to go back in. We go over our options. If we're caught again and Jason gets arrested he won't make it home to CA for Christmas. If we don't go back, we leave with nothing. He says it's up to me if we try going back. Obviously we did- there's no way I was gonna miss that opportunity!
So the assistants wait with the SUV at the gate, Jason and I walk back in. No sign of cop. We start shooting. We decide to stay close to the entrance area b/c otherwise our excuse for being there doesn't really work lol. We get as much as we can before we decide not to tempt fate any longer. I love the shots we got- some of my fav pics I have of myself.
Overall impression: Ultra-cool, eerie, otherworldly experience being there- I'm a horror fanatic- loved it! This is something I never would have tried on my own. I was never scared being inside the park, but then it was daytime, I was with a group and Jason knows all about trespassing laws and how to talk to cops if he's caught. Plus he can be intimidating if he needs to be. I don't believe in ghosts myself- didn't see/hear anything spooky, but then again I wasn't looking. Place would be fabulous for a ghost hunt or zombie roleplay adventure. Too many possibilities-I wish they would make it accessible to the artist community. I hate to see it sitting there not being used (except filming for a day here and there).
It was a completely awesome experience so if you get a chance to go, take it! Now, for the record, I'm not encouraging anyone to trespass... then again I'm not encouraging anyone NOT to trespass either ;)

As a Louisianian, I wanted to stop this video halfway through. Tears filled my eyes and I got a sick feeling in my stomach as I remembered working the Katrina call centers and disaster relief shelters. I was filled with anger that someone from California just wanted to come and take pictures of what this aweful storm did to our state. However, I continued watching. You captured the beauty of the wreckage. You were not there just to show off. I thank you for not being like the other photographers who have posted from this area. You have genuine care and concern for a place that everyone else sees as run down and hopeless. It's refreshing to see someone not making negative comments about the site and focusing on the "zombie" side. By the way, your Louisiana accent needs MAJOR WORK!

Fantastic video! I watched enthralled by your exploration. I cannot explain the range of emotions that it took me through. Although I have never even seen this park before, I am an amusement park lover and have an odd obsession with abandoned theme parks. So sad to see what was once such a happy place in such a state of decay. However, you have taken some amazing shots and my 16 year old daughter was excited to see the final results. She is a budding photographer with an amazing eye as well. Keep up the great work. Please tell me you have a companion with you when you do these things. God forbid you fall and hurt yourself. Sam Rielly what I mean is people can go in there be stupid & get hurt. You're right it's not hard to jump a fence, thats why its so easily vandalized. If they did paid tours they might have enough to get some more security to better preserve it, & keep people like that out. I will never go unless they did that, because the chance of getting a record is not worth it to me.

Wonderful photography. However, why would the cops even care about that place, much less patrol it. Why would Six Flags pay to have it patrolled when they obviously don't care whether it falls apart or not. There is more to this then we know, or I should say, they are willing to tell us. I do assume if anyone gets hurt there will be lawsuits, but still... It seems to be a lot less expensive to just tear it down then leave it, if the city is so broke. Or better yet, rebuild it, jobs, and re-open it, more jobs.

It would be millions of dollars to rebuild and given that the area floods pretty badly with sea water which is why the park wasn't rebuilt and why all the rides, minus Batman (an inverted coaster), was left there to rot....Six Flags didn't want to take the loss and they closed the Houston's AstroLand park that same year literally two months later. I completely agree with your permit idea because you are going there for a purpose. Reckless vandals suck. There is no need to destroy it. That was awesome to watch!! I enjoyed seeing inside that abandoned park, and you have some courage to go their at night in a lightening storm. Creepy stuff. I was imagining what the cop was thinking when he saw a bride stand up. That had to scare the crap out of him, too. I mean who on earth would expect to see a bride in the dark, during a lightening storm, in a decrepit abandoned amusement park . . . I'd think I was seeing a ghost!!!

Just me, but I'd never let a cop catch me on the grounds. Plenty of hiding places. I would have a field day with a superstitious cop. That woman in the bride's dress; I'd have her walk around aimlessly like she was just married at the amusement park and looking for her lost husband. Another instance, I'd just leave fully dressed mannequins everywhere, and play crowd noise over a portable loudspeaker. If you're going to get caught, get caught in style.

You've got a point there. Hey, but even cops have a little sense of humor(and supernatural). It was a weird encounter so what else can you say? It eases the situation.
Places like that are monumental. I wish when I was a kid I'd have taken pics of the abandoned places I explored. Of course, back then, it was a pencil on a 2x4 stud. This was before spray paint. This vid just rocked me. That Jason instinctively flattened out with his people is when the authourities showed up, indicates how creepy and scary the place was. I've done the same thing and then was sheepish afterwards.

It is so bizarre to see this park so totally abandoned after having been there and having gone on the rides. @@toriacastillo4302 he is not pretentious. These shots are amazing. No filters, 15 minutes of editing for the entire shoot. If you guys would go to one of his workshops instead of griping about his "fake skies" and such you could learn to shoot amazing shots like he does.

If anyone was curious about the current status of the park, as of 11/30/14 there is no active security and their are still gaping holes in the fences. However, there are a ton of No Trespassing signs posted so if you go in, you'll get charged. It was a walk in the park for me. I even climbed a roller coaster and somehow didn't get spotted by anyone.

I know man, it was surreal seeing it in person. If you ever get the chance to check it out, take it!

Wow that's crazy so many years later but I just read that the city in general is just starting to come back to life so Maybe they'll think of something but I know it's been going from six flags to re buying it to jazz land being back to some other company's so it's up in the air what's going to happen to it but I hope something will soon for the sake of the people living there

Just watched the abandoned Six Flags Over New Orleans.. Love the shots you took. Abandoned places are the best things to explore. Use to explore old house from early 1900's to 1940's Wish I had photographed some of it then..Keep up the good work!
