    My favorite part:
    "And we'll flyte it out"
    A Flyte was a Norse competition of poetry and song. In other words, a rap battle.

    Norse and Greeks had very contrasting ideas of gods. Greeks believed that the gods should be feared and worshiped. Norse believed that the gods were allies of man and should be respected.

    • @eliasgibson3932

      And what does that have to do with the battle?

    • @craxnor
      @craxnor 8 лет назад +241

      Just gave some insight to the lyrics.

    • @merl0c
      @merl0c 8 лет назад +182

      +craxnor The norse worshipped their gods in a completely different sense. The Greek believed the world was shaped by the whims of the gods, most notably Zeus random sexual encounters, and thus them ever being anything close to the gods was not in their hands as the Greek gods were fairly random in what they were doing. In contrast in Norse, as long as you fell bravely in battle, you would be accepted into the halls of Valhalla, waiting while battling and feasting each day for Ragnarok to aid the gods in a final battle at the end of the world. The norse essentially worshipped their gods in their actions more than prayers, and they usually had favourite gods that they aspired to follow, whether it be Odin's wisdom, Balder's beauty, Tor's strenght, or Frøya's fertility. Lack of worship or bravery in life resulted in punishment in afterlife, being denied access to Asgard and being forced to live in the eternal frozen realm of Helheim. In contrats, the Greeks were learned to fear the prospect of gaining the traits of gods, as they are muddled in stories where even trying to become as beautiful as Aphrodite results in her curse, or not offering Poseidon his bulls resulted in floods and disaster etc, and that no matter what you did in life, unless the gods grants you ambrosia on their whimsical nature, you'll end up in the underworld, with a select few (usually demigods) ending up in Elysium.

      @OtomostheCrazy 8 лет назад +37

      You know this actually sounds interesting. Any knowledge on how other ancient cultures viewed gods? The Egyptians valued them for Order over Chaos, right?

    • @merl0c
      @merl0c 8 лет назад +48

      +OtomostheCrazy I'll be honest, Egyptian mythology eludes me a bit because I do not hold it in the same regard as Norse and Greek. I'm not saying it because I don't respect the Egyptian culture, but it's more that while Norse and Greek mythology was fairly amusing with rich vibrant stories similar to the Egyptian ones, the Norse and Greek were not as direct in using religion as a way to control the population. The Egyptians blatantly had a religion fit for the ruling class, pharaohs using their divine legacy as a reason to rule above all Egyptians while oppressing any others, they even had an antagonistic god Seth representing foreigners among many things. The thing is that I can't help but feel the Egyptian mythology is shaped around political agenda, for example many of the later depictions of the gods were shown worshiping or praising the pharaohs that ruled during that time. This is in stark contrast to Norse mythology where the gods pretty much lived in an entirely different plane of existence and hardly meddled in human affairs. On top of my personal uh... non interest with the Egyptian pantheon, it's another thing that Egyptian mythology is probably among the 3 ancient ones, the most "lost" in terms of information. Greek mythology was well preserved through both Roman mythology (basically a copy but with different names) and the preservation by the middle eastern nations through the middle ages with a major resurgence in knowledge during the renaissance, and Norse mythology was well kept through history through the sense that the scandinavian countries never had a cultural purge or devastation that made it forgotten history, despite Christianity rolling over them of course, but the folk tale nature of Norse mythology just kept it remembered through generations as stories told for entertainment, then of course we have the poetic Edda, a massive source of information for the norse. Egyptians? Well, you have a bunch of hieroglyphs that archeologists are still trying to agree the meaning on as the only proper source of translation we have is a rock slab (the Rosetta) meaning vast parts of Egyptian history is still a giant puzzle.

    "Val-halla atcha boy and we'll flyte it out"
    Awesomely clever line. Flyte is a cognate of the Old English "Flitan," which is a contest of song, poetry, and clever insults. The Nords basically invented the rap battle (though the old Anglo-Saxons also carried the tradition).

      Churchill was weak. He spent more time talking about battling than actually battling.
      "I'll fight you on the beaches.... I'll fight you and I'll beat you".
      "I may be battlin' you even though I'm toasted, tomorrow I'll be sober and you'll still be roasted"
      "Roosevelt, the dude's about to lose the bout to Churchill, if a bullet to the chest won't kill you, my words will".
      "I'll battle to the end and I will never surrender".
      Hardly any substance, and he has to resort to weird interjections to make a few key lines even rhyme.

    • @agtl3168
      @agtl3168 8 лет назад +2

      +Paul Richardson Yeah? well planets, solar systems and stars are named after Greek and Roman gods. And their culture laid the foundations for western culture including Scandinavian. Even the practice of runes is not native to Scandinavia they stole it from the Greeks/latins. Scandinavians barely even recorded their own history before they were christianised. Scandinavia was the most primitive part of Europe and it was relatively a poor region until the early 19th century. Greek mythology's influence is everywhere it even influenced the modern superhero and literature in general. Norse by comparison didn't have nearly as strong of am impact which is why it's not talked about as much and why we have 3893489438 movies based on Rome and Greece and not very many based on Scandinavia lol. The very English language is filled with latin and greek words.

    • @andirichards7371

      actually if vikings didn't invade Britain, the whole English isles would have been nothing, and we all know how important great Britain was encompassing 23% of the population in 1913 and owning 13,700,000 square miles. Also without Great Britain what would things like the united states and Canada be like, probably much weaker. So much is derived from the vikings/Scandinavians that we don't think about so, next time you try to denounce the vikings, think about this, No industrialization in Britain, No U.S., and Probably no Russia

    • @nathanback2544
      @nathanback2544 6 лет назад

      andi richards the Russia thing was accurate (Rus just means foreigner in the early local language) but your conclusion that Englaland wouldn’t have formed or been nothing is wrong. Alfred would still have been the last inheritor of the West Seaxe throne. He would likely have formed England in his lifetime without the interference of the Vikings instead of leaving it to Edward the Confessor. And since there would be no invasion from Harald Hardrada if we’re assuming the Vikings never invade England, William would never have won Hastings. The only reason William won was that Harold Godwinson’s forces were exhausted from fighting the battle of Stamford bridge and marching from Northumbria to Wessex in just two weeks. And even then if Harold’s brothers hadn’t disobeyed his orders, Harold would still have won. So there might have been a strong Anglo Saxon England instead of a Norman one.

    Speaking of Disney's Hercules after the ERB, I think that if Disney tried to make Hercules more "authentic," the rating would skyrocket far beyond what is appropriate for children. So good on them for making something that would allow those same children look up Greek Mythology out of interest from that movie.

    I don't know if anyone's mentioned yet, but...
    7:15 They probably didn't mention the Disney's Hercules because the Legend of Hercules is not Greek, it is the Roman adaptation of the Greek tale of Heracles. While they seem to have left the story of Heracles largely unchanged, it would relate to the Roman version of Zeus, known as Jupiter....
    ...I kinda feel I know a little too much about Greek Mythology.

They even developed their own word for Native Americans, calling them skraelings. They settled for about twenty years, then Erik the Red died, so his family was no longer exiled, so they all moved back to Scandinavia.

    I see the comment that it should be Zeus vs Odin a lot, but no, Zeus vs Thor is correct. They're both thunder and lightning gods, and Zeus is the son of Kronos, as is Thor to Odin. Or if you still want to keep the "head god versus" dynamic, Thor originally started out as the head god and Odin was a much later addition.

    Although i am not trying to turn this into a debate, the Greeks did do some very significant advances early on. Fore example, Aristarchus was the first person to support a heliocentric solar system. Hipparchus who invented the astrolabe, calculated the size and distance to the moon and a lot more.
    So Greeks did indeed do a lot in the beginning. Of course, as we all know during the middle ages, astronomy reached an all time high in the middle east. The Greeks in the form of the Eastern Roman Empire and later just the Hellenic World could not work on scientific fields due to the Ottomans' occupation of modern Greece.
    So they do have a point in the rap battle. Greeks didn't invent astronomy, but they made some damn good advancements in the early phases.

    Just a side note, Odin was indeed also a shapeshifting rapist. He borrowed Freyr's falcon skin in order to fly into Jotunheim to seduce and sleep with the daughter of Suttungr in order to steal the the mead of poetry. He did this by disgusing as a young farm hand offering to help Suttungr with the harvest, but went on lure the location of his mead and its protection out of Suttungr, then after the seducing of the daughter, he drank it all and flew back to Asgård and puking it up. At least that's the story in the Snorre's saga.
