How to Draw a Barn House
This drawing I started off with just some light sketch lines for general placement of different trees and hills in the background and then placed in the barn. I used some photo reference to give myself a hand while drawing this but I usually will put my own twist on the drawing to turn it into my own style of drawing.
I started off with the barn and I quickly realized that I would need a ruler for the straight lines. I am usually pretty good with drawing landscapes but when it comes to drawing a straight line, I need to break out the ruler.
I used 2 point perspective to draw the barn. I had the foundation of the barn resting on the horizon and then I had 2 dots to the left and to the right of the barn. The closer the dots are together, the more extreme angles you will get with the barn. So I put those lines pretty far back on the page so that I would just only get a slight angle on the barn.
After the barn had its rough sketch lines in, I started to work on other aspects of the landscape like the sky. I used mainly a 4B pencil for the shading and used a blending stump to smooth it all out making sure not to cover all the sky because I want to leave some white for the clouds. Using a kneaded eraser and an eraser stick, you can start to create some wispy cloud texture. You can always go back into the clouds and add a bit more detail and texture of you like.
After the clouds, went into drawing the background hills which I eventually make darker towards the end of the video. I mostly used 2H pencils to start but switched to 2B pencils to darken the whole thing to make it balance more with the drawing. I did not add too much details to the background hills either. Just some slight eraser texture and left some natural texture from the pencil thats all.
Getting onto the Barn, I used a combination of B pencils along with mechanical pencils to get nice sharp and crisp lines. I wanted to create wood texture and using the eraser stick to pick up lines here and there really helped to add to thee detail of it.
The trees in the landscape used B and H pencils and I actually started with the darker pencils and used the lighter ones over that and it gave a pretty nice overall texture and look. I will usually do it opposite.
Drawing in the ground texture was just simply using an HB pencil lightly covering the area and then using a blending stump to smooth some of it out. Drawing in the road was similar. For the far back road, I just put some graphite on it with my dirty blending stump and for the closer road, I only put down a light layer and blended it out.
The finishing touches was adding in the fence. I feel that it really tied everything together. I also put in some nice shadow lines for them and that made everything pop!
I hope you all enjoyed this video and I will see you all again next week!
Thanks for watching!

haha yes my voice did change a lot. I bought a more professional recording microphone last year and started to use that. The microphone can pick up my voice a lot better than the headset microphone that I was using. The headset mic also had a lot of feedback noise. So the new microphone really helps to up the quality of the videos. Thanks a lot for the comment!
I will still do the tutorials along with school so you don't have to worry about seeing gaps in my uploads. I might not be able to upload as frequently but I will try my best. That is definitely a topic that I will have to do my fair amount of research on to see how I can pull off such a topic.
I do that a lot myself.but not with my own vidoes haha. I will watch a lot of podcasts and such while I draw. Thank you for watching!
A lot of people have been asking for the rainy scene. Ill have to see what I can come up with. Been trying my best to do what I can with school also in the mix. Thanks a lot for the comment!
It is really cool to share my hobby with the world. I never knew that that this would end up taking off like it did. Thanks for the awesome comment and I am glad you enjoyed it!
I have no problems with using a ruler or other tools like french curves and stuff like that. I feel that getting in the texture and details is what really makes the drawing come together nicely but the crisp lines of the ruler really do help. Glad that you enjoyed it. I actually remembered that you had messaged me about doing a barn and it really got me thinking about doing one.
Thanks a lot! Everyone is a bit different on the notion of using rulers or not for art. I see it as a tool to aid in the process of making art. As long as you are enjoying what you are doing, that is what counts. Thanks for the comment and I am glad that you liked it :)
haha I think there will always be a debate as to whether or not they are mountains or hills. Thanks for the comment!
Hi you have brought me back to drawing after a long stretch of being away from it . I have done a lot of painting and airbrushing for the past 30 years and was recently stopped with a bad back injury , I had forgotten how happy pencil and paper used to make me. Your you-tube videos reminded me and made my days better! You have a clear, calm and very enjoyable video to watch. Thanks for sharing and helping to rekindle a forgotten passion. You my friend are a super hero!!
IT is also awesome to hear that you are getting back into drawing. It is a real fun hobby to keep you occupied and it also has a real sense of accomplishment. Also, feel free to join the community on facebook. I have a lot of people on there posting up their work and we have a great time. The link for it is in the description. Best of luck to you and I hope you continue to draw :)
I enjoy these videos alot... I actually listen to your videos as i draw my own projects.. its actually alot more comfortable than listening to music!
I have really never used the electric eraser since I have gotten it. The only real situation that I need to use it is when I have too much graphite on the paper and an eraser can't get it out. The electric eraser will take up most of it. I am glad that you enjoyed the video and thanks a lot for the comment!
I'm not generally a fan of buildings in art but you definitely pulled this one off. I love the sweeping effect of the background.
It just takes time and practice. I think the biggest part is just enjoying the hobby. It is a lot of fun.
The brush I believe you are referring to is the one that I just use to brush away eraser shavings. I have a fan brush that I use for that. I had one lying around that I just don't use so much for painting. I use several erasers. Ill use kneaded erasers for the clouds and those white rectangular ones for odds and ends. I think the one that you are wondering about is the pen like one. That is a tuff stuff eraser stick by paper mate.
You never fail to impress me with your drawings. Keep up the good work. I'm glad that you kept going with this one.
I have a lot of patience and try to understand everyone's point of view as best as I can. I don't mind criticism as long as it is backed up with valid information. A statement like "this video is bad" is a really pointless piece of information because it gives no insight as to how one can do better. So the fact that you backed up your statement with valid information made it better for me to understand how to improve in the future. Thanks for taking the time to respond as well!
Wow bud thanks for the awesome comment! I sometimes forget how just enjoying my own hobby can really help others so much. what a breath of fresh air haha. Thanks a lot for that!
Ty so much for sharing your talent with us. It is so inspiring. I look forward to sharing the year with you. Just think your leaving a little piece of yourself in all of us. That is a blessing friend and is priceless. Thanks ever so much.
Glad that you enjoyed it and thanks for posting!
Yeah, I hear you on that. There really is a saturation of portrait drawings on youtube. I am one of the few that does landscapes. It is working out great so far. only time can tell as to how it will do in the future but I think it will do pretty well. Thanks for watching!
YES! trying new things really is a great way to get better at anything really. Also just trying a different way of doing something you already know how to do is something else I have been trying. Just trying to get more knowledgeable on pencils overall. I am constantly learning new ways to use a pencil. It is by far my medium of choice.
HAHA!! yeah I do remember a lot while I draw. And that really helps for the narration with pointing out certain aspects that I had trouble with and then try to explain it so that the audience can get a better idea of how to go about it. Thanks a lot Andrew for the comment!
No problem at all! Glad you enjoyed it!
I currently don't know too much on how to draw a person since I haven't studied it at all. Not sure if and when I will get myself into doing it. I have just always enjoyed drawing landscapes and trying to capture the natural beauty of them.
Thanks a lot! Landscapes are something I have always enjoyed to do.
No shame in using a ruler. Who ever said a your limited to only pencil and paper when you do a drawing? If it makes the artwork awesome I'm all for it. This drawing certainly meets the criteria of awesome. Thanks for what you do.
There will be more real time drawings done for sure. I know there are a lot out there that enjoy those.
Sorry about that. First time I had someone mention that to me. I do a mix of real time and partially sped up videos on my channel as viewers enjoy both types.
Thanks a lot for the support!
I wont disagree with you on that point. After doing RUclips for 3 years, this is one of the methods that has been crafted of which on how I make my content and it works for a lot of people but not everyone. I do my best to explain what I am doing during the length of the video while keeping it in a timely manner. I do make my share of real time videos as well so that the ones who are really looking for that 1 on 1 help can get it.
That is a very important topic that I will cover hopefully in the near future. I have to put my school studies first though so I try to get my drawing done when I get free time. I will do my best to try and get something for it done in the coming weeks.
After watching your spring meadow tutorial, I can't handle the speed drawing.
Thanks a lot Serafin! Great to hear from you bud!
haha I am glad that someone knew when the transition from hill to mountain was. Interesting to know!
It is really helpful and I enjoy using it from time to time.
I just draw some dots on the table haha. You can erase it right up after you are finished. Also, taping the edges of the page helps a lot so that it doesn't move.
Thoroughly enjoyed this one too. Keep on keeping on please!!
Hey bud, thanks for the suggestion. I have a list of stuff that I am going to cover and then Ill take it from there and see where it goes. Ill add this to my growing list haha. I have been getting so many suggestions that it is insane. Thanks for the input!
I used a ruler for this one yes. Getting straight lines can sometimes be difficult to do.
That is something that I have been wanting to do but I just haven't had the time. I am taking full time classes now and devoting a lot of time to studying. I also do not have any sort of rig for filming out on location. I have found a few solutions of setting up a rig but it would cost me well over $200 dollars to construct. I have put all that on the back burner for now. Just trying to focus on putting out content and doing well in school haha.
I haven't done many drawings at all with drawing a face. For now I am going to stick with landscapes. There is still a lot I want to learn with them. But who knows, I may get into doing that. Only time will tell.
That is something that I have thought about doing a few times. I would have to locate all of my drawings from old homework assignments from when I was a kid haha. It is something that I would like to do. A lot have been asking about it.
I hope it works out well for you!
Thanks for this! This is exactly what I was looking for. I'll try some of the techniques tomorrow. I really like that the barn looks rustic instead of new. There's some really good tutorials on RUclips about perspective drawing, but not much about old building textures. Oh and there is no shame in using a ruler! :)

haha thanks a lot! Yep 2 point perspective for this one. I think I am probably going to make a video on how to draw in perspective.
Hi! Fantastic drawing, outstanding! I was wondering if you are going to do some "on location" drawing, like you go out and draw out from your surroundings and such, I remember that you mentioned it a while back and I think that would be very fun to watch.
Anyhow, excellent video again!
Great video man! very clear explanation. I like how you remember little things that you were thinking while you were drawing, and point them out in the narration haha... ''oh ya, and right here i decided that the shadow was wrong....''
So... In what case would the electric eraser come in handy? Oh and I loved learning how to draw the barn! The clouds and the trees were a little difficult, but I think that my drawing turned out pretty well!
Thanks a lot! Glad you enjoyed it!
I have a real time video as part of my mountains in the mist series that will take you in step by step on how to draw mountains. it is not specific to a drawing like this but it will give you a good idea and start for sure.
I know how you feel. I have some mixed feelings about it as well. But it is something I would like to get better at. It is just something a bit different and I have been trying lots of new things this year.
Glad you enjoyed it :)
Thanks a lot bud! more to come!!
I love drawing very much since childhood..but i don't know how to draw such like the drawing in this video, so today i try this drawing..thank you for uploading this video because it will help others well...thank you so much..
You are so incredibly helpful! Thanks so much for uploading such awesome videos!
Hey Tyler, maybe (if you have time, I mean) could you make a video showing us all your drawings from when you were younger as a child? That would be cool :)
looks very very nice. I really love this one!
Amazing my friend! Love this drawing of the barn with that road :)
Neither can I! Rulers always come in handy haha.
It's a mountain!!! =) Thank you for another truly excellent video.
Thanks a lot! I am glad I kept it up as well.!
That is truly beautiful, well worth a sub!

Your drawings never fail to impress me :D
i am so jelly of your talent :3 i wish i had talent like you
amazing work!
wow so good!!!!! Btw, i noticed that your voice changed compared to your previous video about drawing mountains... your voice here is deeper lol. yeah, great stuff, you totally drew out my dreamland - barns.. :))))) And the clouds/trees looked absolutely great too!
I was just about to ask if you used 2 point perspective, but you already answered that in your video lol. Great drawing as always
Hey Tyler, do you have any tips on drawing people, I was planning a sketch of a world war 2 soldier smeared with thud and grime after a battle to show the cruelty and hell of war but I don't know where to start.
Hello! great vídeo! I have a lot of trouble with perspective and, did you really put the vanishing points on the table? It sounds a really good idea since if you put on the paper they get too close... I ruined many drawing trying to solve this problem ;p
Beautiful work of art :)
Thanks a lot Mario!
Good job I am an artist aswell great work I'm really into landscapes
Tyler can you tell me what kind of brush and eraser that is. Or can you post a new video of the art supplies you have. I know you already have vids of your m
Thanks for the awesome drawing! Really liked it. :)
Great drawing I shall attempt it later :)
Thanks a lot!!
Thanks a lot!
uma pergunta, depois que passa o lapis, qual material você usa para passar por cima?
Thanks a lot bud!
I see how that can possibly be a problem haha. I do the same thing sometimes.
This is a really nice drawing. :)
thank you, i enjoyed it much!
another good one man ...!!
i love watching your video :D
Thx for answer what are you going to school for?
cara você desenha muito velho, continue assim!
Well he's giving you like an example of what you can do... Also he's giving you a general idea how to draw one...
Eu estou usando o Google Translate para responder. Eu não estou certo de quão bem ele vai ser haha. A ferramenta que eu uso para passar por cima de um lápis é um toco de mistura. Que é usada para alisar a textura.
hey can you draw a stone circle ruin at night with snow?im tryin
Are you out of school? You help me so much thank you!!
can you make video on porporations of the face because i need a good tutorial to help me.
This helped me So much

if only it were that easy.
haha thanks a lot!
i see :3 i like to do landscapes but i have got sucked into skyrim X__X
