In this video, I go over and show you different ways to go about thumb nailing your artwork so that you can work out you thoughts on a concept or idea or for future ideas.
This starts off by just having a small idea of some sort of design you wish to have in a final composition. The thumb nailing comes in handy when you need to work out certain problems or working out different angles and placement of objects. It is a very fast and efficient way to get ideas down quickly without spending a tremendous amount of time doing a large format drawing. These types of drawings are great for keeping yourself motivated and helps to bring up new ideas for future work.
I hope you all enjoy the video and thanks for watching!
Music info
Song: Coriolis Effect
Artist: MseQ
Music can be found on cc.mixter.org
Glad to hear that you are getting so much information out of the videos. I sometimes forget how the little things can be so helpful and that is why I am trying to cover them and give everyone a little step forward towards success.
I enjoy drawing with your videos in the background it keeps my mind open, teaches me so many new things, and is very inspirational. Thanks once more for these videos, i will now be using thumbnails since my 3 so far came out great and when i draw waching these i try very mych so to not just draw what you are yet incorporate the new ideas you are reviewing in the composition. These videos have taught me so very much, thank you tyler!
excellent idea for working ideas and practicing....thanks bro!
It is really a great method of getting ideas down quickly to go back to at a later date. I am trying to do this more and more just so that I can improve my drawing abilities. Thanks a lot for the comment!
I remember my high school days of doodling in my notebook constantly! And yes the thumbnailing is great for getting an idea that you have down so that you don't forget it. I am starting to do it as well. I should really carry a small sketch book with me when go off to class so that I can also sketch out some ideas that I get haha. I need to get back into the habit of drawing daily.
Something I never thought of, great for learning new techniques
I have watercolors and have seen how well they perform but I just haven't given them enough time to really understand how to use them. Hopefully one of these days ill build up the motivation to give them another shot.
wow that would require a lot of detail and probably over an hour of work. I have never even attempted something like that. I would say the best thing to do is to look up some reference photos and just practice with different shades of pencils and see what you can make of it.
Dear Tyler, I hope you are good, I really miss the mode of you videos, I used to draw with you while watching long time ago, I hope you return to make more videos,
That has been asked quite a few times surprisingly. Ill keep it in mind for a possible future topic.
It is a clutch pencil. It is pretty much the same as a regular pencil but instead of having the graphite encased in wood, it is like a large mechanical pencil. Using regular pencils will work just fine as well.
Even your thumbnail sketches look great haha! I love your art!
That is great to hear! Thanks for commenting!
Hey Tylerart thanks for the thumbnail drawing vid because I can get a sketch off and put my ideas down on paper and save em for future use if i want to make em an official drawing. Now I'm less frustrated and I believe I'm starting to get past this wall I've hit I think this will help me in long run cause I use to do little doodle drawing when distracted or bored in class and the thumbnail allows me to put those doodles to use now I can probably pump out more ideas for drawings
Hmm where to start... I think the mountains in the mist series might be a good place to get going since it is a full 8 part real time series that shows you each step for getting the drawing completed. You might have a good time with that one. I personally started out small and worked my way up. I would draw a tree's, grass, or just a rock many times over until I understood it. But everyone learns differently. Try to keep yourself motivated as well.
great to hear! Thanks a lot for the support!
oh well your doing a great job of balancing work and youtube , your an amazing artist and i am always happy with the quality of video's you produce :)
Thanks a lot bud! This is something that I should do to help plan out my drawings better as well.
yes we were and I remembered it. It really came in handy since I have been running short on time recently.
Thanks a lot! Glad you are enjoying it!
from what I understand, guache is like an opaque watercolor. I only have white but have never used it.
omg your thumbnails are like my finished drawings
I mainly stick to landscape and try not to deviate too much from that. That is where my true passion for drawing lies and it is also where I can best illustrate my knowledge about it. I have pretty much zero experience in the portrait and cartoon style of drawing and just wouldn't feel right making an informative video about it.
Thanks a lot!
I used to use charcoal a lot but have started to get away from it because I can get a lot more detail work done with pencil than I can with charcoal. I also don't think I have given charcoal enough time to really explore how to do different effects. A lot of the texture comes from the natural tooth of your paper and the pressure applied. I would try using things like paint brushes, tissues, q-tips to partially blend them and make texture. Paper towels should give a nice texture as well.
I have quite a few drawings lined up to work on it is just that I am running out of time because of school. I hardly have any free time anymore to really work on them. I always try my best to get what I can done though. Thanks for the comment!
Could you make a tree, that went through like a whole year.
Winter: Snow on a naked tree
Spring: A tree with flowers or something
Summer: A tree with leaves
Autumn : the leaves a falling of and it's kinda sad
That would be really cool if you could make like a little series with something like that :)
another great tutorial mate
What you described here sounds a lot like the paintings that Tim Gagnon would do. His channel is gagnonstudio if you haven't seen it. You have an interesting idea here and ill keep it in mind. Thanks a lot for the comment and suggestion.
It would be cool if you could show us how Tor draw landscapes in rain
LMAO. that was extremely random and very funny. Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi, I enjoy all your work. Have you ever drawn waterfalls IE; Niagara
Great thumbnails! I love doing thumbnails. I can get lost spending hours and hours playing with ideas and designs. So much fun.
I should just do what mark crilley does, a time lapse and commentary of each video haha. I try my best to lend everyone a hand in the way that I feel will be most beneficial to them.
Hey Tyler I was wonderin if u have ever tried to use charcoal sticks or pencils and if u have how would u blend and erase the charcoal off the paper to create texture
I would do something with characters but I am not too experienced with drawing them at all.
:3 This helps me a bunch. Thanks so much! :)
Well, the thumbnails that I did are pretty much complete drawings. The only difference is that I did not add too many details or texture to them. You would not really be able to tell the difference between the complete and the thumbnail side by side in that size. You wouldn't even see the details with it being so small.
Hey, I was wondering if you've done anything with gouache on your channel? I've been looking all over to no avail, if you haven't could you possibly give some pointers?
I love trying to replicate water in my drawings. It is so much fun.
Hey, do you know how you would texture/shade ice like if you had a piece of metal and it was encrusted by a thin layer of ice/frost
I have drawn small waterfalls but nothing as large as that before.
whats the name of the pencil you use ?
Thanks! I love to draw! I'm subscribing :)
RUclips has been doing some fishy things man! I am telling you haha. Well, I am glad that you are back :)
I love water too :)
we where talking about this in our last hang out =)
Hi,

Thx
