It runs much better now :), there's not many mechanics out there nowadays that can actually tune up and repair older cars, they all want their bloody Scan Tool!
Im amazed you can hear anything above the noise the belts+waterpump are making. You really seem to enjoy bringing cars back to life, i hope your customers appreciate you for the time spent and honesty of your repairs. Has the factory air conditioning work/repair dryed up? Nice to hear the engine when its done :-)
Well a lot are just 'fitters' not mechanics. I use an old school mechanic, who has his own 'workshop' where his classics live. He's a full time MOT tester, but charges a third of what any garage would, and knows his stuff.
Brad it does seem that a lot of mechanics in your area seem to be just out to shaft their customers sideways. You got this old beast ticking over fine in almost no time at all, when basically that mechanic said it was completely fragged. It does make you wonder if they were trying to sell them another car...
If it does need a new engine and the coustomers doesn't want the car anymore, tell them to buy a classic merc diesel :) never have to worry about finding another car again unless they don't take care of it.
ide say its more the fact if you cant plug a computer into it and get told what to do it aint worth doing. my car went for 5 years and 70,000 after the mechanics told the previous owner it was on its last legs
It's hard to find one of those Mercedes Diesels where I am where the body hasn't rotted to death or someone hasn't bodged things up. Too many hippies have bought them to run "Bio Diesel" experiments with the engines and thrashed the poor cars.
I know, they rely on the scan tool and engine analyzer to do all of their thinking for them rather then their seven senses and deductive reasoning. I think many are just lazy and are just waiting out the clock at work every day hoping that the boss won't notice.

She'll be right as rain once you've finished. Im assuming Australian roadworthy is like our UK MOT test and registration is like road tax?
