- This is the year of the Camaro - the car of today! - Fascinating GM original promotion film for the new Camaro in 1967.
The first-generation Chevrolet Camaro 1967-1969 is an American muscle car introduced by Chevrolet in the fall of 1966 for the 1967 model year. It rode on a brand-new rear-wheel-drive GM F-body platform and was available as a 2-door, 2+2 seat, hardtop, and convertible. The F-body was shared with the Pontiac Firebird for all generations. A 230 cu in Chevrolet straight-6 was standard, with several Chevy V8s available as options.
The first generation of the Camaro is really stunning. I really like the design, the proportions and it has such a good 60ies vibe.
A lot of these cars were definitely pre production prototypes. The plain jane gold car was the first production car built. It is still alive, and is now a museum display piece.
Right...that very first Canaro had a 6 cylinder engine and 3 speed manual transmission on the steering column. It was highly modified into a race car but subsequently restored back to factory stock with its original parts
Saw that one at the Woodward Dream Cruise a few years ago.
The first 200 were all gold... I began work in GM Engineering in August '66 and stumbled across one in our PowerGlide factory before they came out... gold/gold, 2 bbl. 327 210 HP 3 speed on floor... looked perfectly sized/styled for 18 year old me... was driving '62 Jetfire at that time...
As an owner of a 69 RS/SS I approve this video!!
"A complete car, equipped with everything you need for fun! Who could ask for anything more!!" Thnx for posting.
Far. Out. Mini skirts , mod clothes and far out style's made them sell
I remember watching the TV show "Bewitched" and Chevrolet was a sponsor even the concept cars made it to your living room .
If they sold cars so you could pick the options like they used to and the prices wasn't the price of a house I would buy one EVERY year, But now they got to where they FORCE things you do not want on a vehicle and then PRICE it like it will last you for life and make it all out of plastic and say take it or leave it, Allot of us choose to leave it. I REFUSE to buy a new car now it use to be a pleasure to buy a new vehicle now its a chore this promotion video brings back so many good memories, Thank you.
Get a Toyota
@@buddyg1408 I have had Toyota's they sell them the same way..
With the price of autos so high, it's only a matter of time before the industry comes to a hault...then the big corps will be left scratching their thinking..WTF ??
I sold these cars back in the day at a Chevy Store in Milwaukee. This film looks a lot like one of the training films that we got from Chevy to learn about the new products that were up and coming. Management would set up a large film projector in a conference room and this would be out first intro of a new product. The projector made so much noise, you had trouble hearing the flick. But the message came across, and we sold 'em. One at a time.
@@philpolzin2233 So true. I found this movie at a GM dealer in Sweden. It was for a projector.
Looks much better than today's camaro, ground clearance. Ground clearance makes it possible to have fun, clear speed bumps. 😊
No computers just the minds of men and a slide rule. Amazing for the time. I stand corrected computers the size of a house. 5k memory
I found it odd that the engineers said it needs single leaf springs. When the next year they put double ones.
They were lopo at first...
8:56 Back in the day when the phone rang in that department. Did they answer the phone and say: "Hello Parts" . LOL
This promotional film was created for the annual summer preview conference (dealer introduction) attended by the owners of Chevrolet franchises. Likely, it was also shown later at each Chevrolet franchise to the sales team. The early introduction 1965 Ford Mustang really caught General Motors off guard... which the Chevrolet Division at the time trying to wring out as many compact sporty car sales as possible with the Corvair Monza/Corsa coupes and convertibles. Thus, a quick management decision was made immediately after the April 1964 introduction of the Mustang to engineer the Camaro (and its derivative the Pontiac Firebird which debuted as a 1967 1/2 model). The first generation Mustang had a narrower straight line linear look... but the first generation Camaro was styled to have a wider rounded look on its bodysides (somewhat muted with the 1969 facelift). Dave Holls is better known as a prominent designer of the iconic 1959 Cadillac.
Camaro putting mustangs back in their stalls since 1967😎 I sure do like my 69 RS
Summer of Love. I really enjoyed the design discussion. I imagine the use of computers saved a lot of wear on tear on the slide rulers of the day.
They used a subframe concept that was intro a yr later on the nova. Which shared alot of stuff
The Camaro came out on September 29, 1967, exactly 7 years before I was born
I don’t care what any of the doomsday say. This was a fascinating video, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching each and every minute of it. Thank you for sharing this fantastic automotive history with us.
Good god, the understeer and body roll in the turns!!!
A different world and most people didn't drive like idiots on public roads like they do today so this suspension was perfect for the way most drove.
I think they just found this car, the gold one.
It was at the Woodward Dream Cruise a few years back. First Camaro.
@@tomhext1229I just watched the video.

Cool, the first 000001 prototype was built in May 66 and was Granada Gold with a straight 6 and a three on the tree. 😀
The best Camaro ever made.
@unitedcity_mc4421, ROFLMAO. Delusional much?
@@sergeantmasson3669 mind your own business, asshead.
Nope
Maybe styling
Second Generation had much better handling
@@John-pz6nm your opinion.
@@unitedcity_mc4421 I've owned both
My first car was a 68 had it for 17 years
I had a 77 Type LT for 12
Of course it's my opinion . I know these cars better than anyone
Oscar looks ike an early version of Buster. "Engineers came-up with single leaf rear springs" LOL !! In 1967-68 Ford had a brochure that folded-out showing a Camaro but when you unfold the cover it's a Corvair with redesigned front fenders ! Those were the days, ordering whatever engine & accesories you could afford to spend a few hundred dollars more for.
Corvair, Buick Special/Skylark, Olds F85/Cutlass/Jetfire, Pontiac Tempest/LeMans all same body!
Very groovy man !
Slick, funny how the older camera tech actually reduces the true beauty of the car, still so glad it came along. Thanks Mustang!
Actually it has had a couple of endings, most recently on December 14, 2023 when the last Camaro rolled off the assembly line.
They creatively avoided admitting their target was the Mustang.
What do you mean? That dinosaur computer is the reason why it isn't a Mustang.
Camaro was a Chevy II with smaller version of '65 Chevy body...
@@DG-sf9ei Chevrolet was obviously looking for vehicle to compete in a market segment defined by the Ford Mustang.
I love my 67 RS in original Marina Blue black interior 327 4speed , I have had it about 35 years & restored it all my self . I will never sell it 😀 I wish U tube could let post pics of it here …
I did the mistake and sold my Camaro 1969 convertible and Z28/RS back in the 90's. Still regret it!

The Testing in this Video was Hilarious, GM Designs all their cars to Last Eight Years !
targetted for youth -- all I could afford then was a '59 Plymouth Savoy flat 6!! Now I can buy one - $100K.
So true. Crazy how today's 21 year old believes every 21 year old could afford a new car in 1967.
Ok - convinced. Nice car! When is it possible to order it? :D
18:15 No wheel hop, hmmm. They somehow figured out how to add that capability to my 67 RS/SS. In '68 they went with staggered rear shocks which helped a lot.
When the boys got back from Vietnam this is what they wanted.
Or their legs back.
@@toasteroven8588 was not meant to be funny

They dreamed of coming back to Family and Mustangs.
Probably so. Family #1
Never seen MacPherson and Holls on-film. Very interesting.
Without the Mustang, there would be NO Camaro.
100% true!
There is no more Camaro😂MUSTANG WON! IT'S OVER
There would be no Cougar, Barracuda, Firebird,or Challenger and all of them died in the end leaving the only car that started it all, the Mustang.
@@austinhazlett2k17 the barracuda came BEFORE the mustang… and the mustang is just a falcon, with different sheet metal….
You mean a rebodied Falcon renamed the Mustang 😂
IMHO, the Camaro is a Corvair design reboot. It shares many styling queues from the second generation Corvair, inside and out, but changed and adapted enough to have its own identity and front engine layout. If the Corvair's reputation hadn't been so sullied by 1966, I can't help but think the Corvair name may have succeeded to the new Panther/Camaro. Many styling queues are carried over from the Corvair. Interesting side note, ever notice the Camaro never had the very popular round taillights until 1970? That was the first year there was no Corvair in the line-up with round taillights. Many styling similarities can be found between the 2nd generation Corvair and 1st generation Camaro. Personally, in high school, during the mid-seventies, my first gotta have car was a Camaro, but it was the uniqueness and design of the 2nd gen Corvair that actually stole my heart.
Unlike the mustang, which is literally a falcon, with different sheet metal.
No mention of the Z28.
They couldn't admit- WE GOT CAUGHT WITH OUR PANTS DOWN!!!"
The back seat wasn’t for extra passengers 😂
Much better car than the Mustang by far
Yep, the Mustang was just a rebodied Falcon, nothing special unless you were a Ford fanboy. 🤣
18:17 how'd they do that without wheelhop from those great monoleafs?!
Skinny tires!
For 11 dollars more you can get a firebird
You had to wait five months to get one.
Yet the Camaro outsold the bird beak by a lot.
More than double the Chevrolet dealerships compared to Pontiac didn't hurt either.
Is that Rodger Smith narrating ?
somebodys grand parents lol
This is such a hoot! They pretend like the Mustang doesn’t exist and they just dreamed up the Camaro. I’m old enough to remember when both cars were introduced pony car mania was such a thing in the 60s.
2 of my friends in 2 different camaros where killed in sharp turns 1979 😢
Very sorry to hear that. As I recall the rear would slide out fairly easily. We had a 67 Camaro.
@@jamesrecknor6752 yep and neither had a big block or 4 speed just 350 / turbo 350 thanks for your message 👍
i guess the 1:1 scale clay models get destroyed at the end?
Dumpster or company museum. Decided by budget and corporate whim.
They still make these clay models today.
That damn mono leaf was not a good idea!!🤬🤬
I HAVE THIS VIDEO ON MY CHANNEL LOL.
Great! Original I got this film from a GM deal in Alvesta, Sweden back in beginning of 1980.
Never cared for Camaros ....Mustangs is where its at
😆😆😆😆😆
Then why are you here? 🤣
Came here just to say that lol..
Feel better now? 🤣
They all speak like politicians. The basic idea came after extreme sphincter tightening when they saw the Ford Mustang.
This was back when adults, raised in the silent generation, were speaking properly and proficiently, like an episode of Mad Men.
@@JustForSneaksEnt that's because these people like on Mad Men, were reading from a script
@@JustForSneaksEnt Exactly, where have the adults gone?
2 things , when was taking about the SS models and was showing the 67 Impala SS grill , he says its a 396 , the badge says 427 . And first gen Camaro's were OK , but they just reminded me of bloated Corvairs....
I saw that too
Camero. French for buddy
That's why they named it Camaro.
Looks a whole lot like a Ford Mustang . Looks to be about the same size as a Mustang.
The 1967-1969 Z/28 models were sloth-slow turds. All show and no go.
What year model of Z28 ,s are you referring to ? I have a 69 all original Z28 and it’s definitely not slow. Thanks
@@ricardofierro7041 1967-1969. '69-'70 Boss 302 Mustang was faster. I have an all options 1969 Boss 302 Mustang that I bought new at Tasca Ford. No '67-'69 Camaro Z/28 ever beat it on any drag strip track. FACT: NHRA, the '67-'69 Z/28 was 2 classes lower than the '69-'70 Boss 302 Mustang.
That is *not* true. These cars were amazing and that is the reason why so many people love them. Why don’t you do yourself a favour and turd on a Yugo instead?
Were you alive in 1967?
@@bobtis yes, very much so. Married in 1967, working at the largest Ford dealership in my state and in US Army Special Forces reserves, medevac Sergeant.

In the future we will be forced to drive electric cars whether you like it or not. No gasoline will be available. 😮😢
I won't be. I lived some fun times in days gone by, hope to be dead by the time electric turds are the only choice.
Nah, not enough resources to make all the batteries that would be needed or replaced.
Mustang came along in '64.5 and opened eyes, regarding affordable, relatively compact, powerful American sports driving. Then Chevy said, "Whoa! We've got to get in on this!" The pricey Corvette, while superior to the Mustang, wasn't competitive, price-wise. Enter the Camaro and Firebird. Heavier than the Mustang, but with bigger engines. And the muscle car era launched in earnest.
The Mustang was a rebodied Falcon, nothing special about it. 🤣
So many of these commercials were so damn corny during that time.
You have a bunch of old farts trying to show how cool they really are BUT it shows just how much they really weren't!!!!
These people weren't old farts in the days these cars were produced. Never forget your grandkids will be making fun of your "old ass " someday
@@edpoe4622 Exactly! 🤣
It's amazing today how GM wants to ruin everything today 🫤🫤
