    They dropped this song after the five or six first 'Painkiller' tour gigs, not counting the Concrete Foundations, LA pre-tour gig they did the month earlier, with a shorter set. Halford had just recovered from vocal nodes? (I've read it somewhere) and he was physical and emotionally tired from the lawsuit thing. His voice during the 1990 leg of the 'Painkiller' tour was not his greatest gigs during that tour. Gladly he was back in almost perfect shape in 1991. The stage the band used for the 1990 leg was huge, they couldn't fit it at many venues unfortunatly. A smaller stage was built for the 1991 tour, but without all the catwalks, the metal pipes that blew fire during 'All Guns Blazing' and the huge Priest sign behind the drums. Halford had trouble keeping up with the speed of this song, so it was dropped. Some gigs later, they stopped playing 'Between the Hammer & The Anvil' as well, leaving only 4 'Painkiller' songs in the setlist to choose from. At most gigs they did just 3 of the songs, with 'A Touch of Evil' bing played occationally. They did rehearse 'Leather Rebel' and played it at the first pre-tour gig in LA, at the Concrete Foundations Forum in L.A. A recording of that ended up as bonus track for the album remaster-series.

      Its not just that

      The speed of the song ?
      You mean the pitch ?
      because that's what he seems to have issue with.
      The speed doesn't seem a problem on vocals

      @SilverTounge85 4 года назад +3

      @@mirak63 Rob seemed to struggle a lot during the 1990 leg of the tour. Stakes were too high, they didnt sell out all the venues, they had to downscale the stage for the 1991 leg. But this particular gig, his voice had a good night. He sounded better in '91 though.

    • @Nissardpertugiu

      @@SilverTounge85 he had nodles in 1990
      In mercenaries of metal tour he is over the top .
      In Painkiller he put hell of performance in extremes as well.
      But he was bridging into his 40's and his vocal box began to really change ( it would cleary and progressivly more change through the 1990's after 1991 tour , when at the end at the decade , he went baritone ) on rehearsals he blew his voice .
      The first show in L.A forum you can hear that .
      The struggle in 1990 was because of that .
      Nodes , begining of change and put Painkiller stuff live is almost very very difficult or too hard to equal the studio version close on certain songs .
      In 1991 he recovered , with rest of his Ram it down voice
      But begin to be more mature and change .
      Even he always did it since 70's , in 1991 he exposed more Grunt and growling here and there ( in sentinel chorus for example ) , then really exploited this in Fight more ..

    First time I saw them was late 2002 w/Ripper Owens - at a strip mall warehouse in Doraville , Ga. on like a Tues. night. I only lived about a 1/2 mile away. I thought how crazy the "way of the world " is , at the time: one day you're HUGE and popular, the next you're back to smaller venues and crowds. Didn't matter bc they absolutely rocked it (as only they can do!). I remember that year I saw The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and The Cult in the same place - it was a "lean" year , that year, for concert tours and the economy in general. Ironically, we got ourselves into a long drawn out, wasteful couple of wars ....... ironic? Then next 3X I saw JP was with Halford singing , and they were excellent. They have never put on a bad show in my experience.

      holgh wolgh Rob outperformed himself on the Painkiller album... he set the bar so high that even he himself couldn’t match it. He was already struggling in the early 90s, I don’t know why he chose to sing such impossible stuff on the album. It made for an amazing album but disappointing performances for fans who probably hoped to hear that voice live. 1970s Halford could have performed this song with ease, exactly the way it is on the album... 1990 Halford, nope.

    @lomolomil I checked out Ripper's version here on youtube from the '98 live album. It's true that it's a step lower, and it does seem a tad slower than this one. But, this video is from 1990 - 21 years ago, so Rob WAS indeed younger. Granted, he wasn't a kid anymore, but he wasn't old by anyone's standards. So, the age thing is not a valid point. The other two are. In '98 ripper was 31, and Rob was 40 here. Yes, older, but it's not that big a difference that it's a valid excuse.

      Certain nights he sounded just like the album, problem is the entire setlist is so vocally taxing that no human being can do it over and over for a whole tour. They played many more dates back then for more exposure, today bands have the internet and social media so they can do only a few shows and still sell albums.

    • @shawnsmith9315
      @shawnsmith9315 5 лет назад +2

      Yeah, I mean, tbh, he probably saved his voice somewhat for the more important shows, but even then - this stuff is so tough to sing that its bound to take a pretty big toll. What he does here is still fairly incredible. One thing a lot of people don't realize is that Rob was coming off of suffering from minor nodules in 1990 and only really started to truly recover his full range by early to mid 1991. That coupled with being at an age where his voice was just starting to change a bit meant he couldn't effortlessly hit the soaring highs in the same way he did a couple years prior in 88 and early 89. He overdid and paid dearly for it later. But it made for a hell of a tour and a hell of an album with the Mercenaries of Metal tour and Painkiller respectively. Its a shame we didn't get a follow up to Painkiller with Rob right away, but... oh well. We did get a pretty good album with War of Words, then the first Halford record was great too.
      Plus, Firepower has no right being anywhere near as good as it is, all things considered. It stands up with some of their greatest material. I'm just cherishing it while it lasts, because I think we're looking at the final stretch as far as Priest goes. I'd say maybe one more tour. If KK were to actually return, maybe one more album. But I'm not holding my breath on that.

    The problem here isn't Rob's vocals, it's the sound. Some bands when they tour have their own soundman travel along with them {Led Zeppelin did} while others used whoever was available either at the venue or in the city/town. This is what a shit job sounds like. Did they run this through? Didn't they do a sound check before the show? The guitars are far too loud, they drown out Rob's vocals to the point to where you can't even hear him sometimes.

    @hecbiz75 well, that's not exact. Ripper sings every Priest song on a lower tone than Halford, that is the same they use now that he is old. This version is also faster than the one sang by Ripper, which is also more difficult for the singer. I think Owens has a good voice, but no one compares mr. Robert Halford, specially when he was young.

  • @hecbiz75
    @hecbiz75 12 лет назад +1

    I love, LOVE Halford. But, I wonder why he doesn't sing it live like he does on the albums. Check out this song on Live 98 Meltdown, sung by Ripper. HE does it like Rob did on the album. More and more, Ripper keeps gaining more of my respect. He's one hell of a singer, right up there with (if not better than) than Rob. Check out his solo album, and the bands Beyond Fear and Charred Walls of the Damned. AWESOME STUFF.

      I respect Ripper massively as a singer, and he sings bloody great in the live performance you mentioned, but Rob sings it way higher throughout almost the entirety of the song and had been doing it for a decent amount longer than Ripper had, voices don’t like such high octane performances for long periods!

      What? Halford doesn't avoid high notes. Sometimes yes but he can sing high live

    Yes, but have you seen Rob singing this song in recent years? It's not only bad, it's cringe-worthy. I understand he's older, but it's embarrassing. They should do it in a lower tuning, or drop it from their live shows altogether. He's sounding pretty horrible on it as of late, and it saddens me.

      Yes.. but I am not surprised, the way he used to sing must have been extremely tiring for his vocal cords.. and he realizes all the time, I think for him it must be a torture, even my throat hurts just when listening to his unsuccessful effort :/

      At the beginning of the show there was an accident, while rob was riding the harley onto the stage and he mistimed the entrance and got hit in the face by one of the stair risers, becase of the accident they played Hell Bent For Leather for the first (and only) time as an instrumental while rob was being attended too by medics backstage and the rest of the band weren't even sure if they were going to be able to play the show because they didn't know how severe rob's injuries were.
      You can't really see it but he's got a bandage in the bridge of his nose from the accident and chances are his nose was fairly sore/swollen restricting his breathing and causing him to be unable to perform as he would have liked too.
