Citroen SM seats in a 64 DS19. A match made in heaven?

  • Why am I installing Citroen SM seats in my 1964 DS19? I find the DS seats too soft and the angles wrong for my taste. The 64 DS19 is a very softly "sprung" car, between the soft ride and the soft seats I find myself wallowing around clutching the steering wheel for support on back country roads where I drive. The DS seats envelope a person in soft springy luxury, which I believe may be pleasing while sitting in the living room of your house, but in an automobile it creates a seasickness feeling. For people why drive their DS only on flat straight roads of the city you may never notice this unsettling effect. The SM seat has transformed my impression of the car for the better. It is like heaven in comparison.
Plus other miscellaneous DS ramblings and plans to convert the car to DIRAVI steering.

Great stuff. I’ve often been wondering how difficult it would be to put a series 2 CX interior in my XM. I think it’s the peak of Citroen interiors, especially in the special chevron / fish grate of the Turbo version. In comparison the XM interior is rather conservative. I once saw such a set of CX seats on a Citroen fair for a very fair price and was very tempted. The pinnacle would be to also add the CX2 dashboard but that would very probably be asking for a lot of trouble. 😁

You are defiantly asking for trouble, but sometimes it is worth it. The important thing to consider is the thickness of the base of the new seat and the overall width. If the new base is too thick you end up looking through the top of the windscreen where the optics can make you dizzy. There is usually some fabrication of brackets and welding involved too. Personally I would only make the change if you are extremely uncomfortable driving your XM and you know for sure that you like the CX seats. I tried three different styles of DS seats before this SM seat. The SM seat is perfect whereas none of the DS seats suited me at all.

@@Porsche9elfer Thanks for taking me seriously but I was kind of daydreaming there. Fabricating parts wouldn’t be a problem but sooner the question how far one should go. In reality I contained myself to mixing up things a tiny bit. My 1996 series 2 XM has a series 1 nose and single spoke steering wheel and the flat streamlined hubcaps of the Evasion version, which make it look extra futuristic in my eyes. As far as the rest goes I have been able to contain myself. Thanks for the nice insights into your adventures.

I liked the interior of citroens I like to say all of them. But there was one thing I had sum getting used to. I've driven plenty of manuals in North America. But the gear shift was um different It sum time.

The XM seats are the BEST ! And they are powered !

DS Pallas models had a height-adjustable driver's seat, the exact same mechanism. Then you could have had the greater comfort, the right height for you and it would match your other seat. The SM seat really does look out of place.

I just found that out recently, but thank you for the observation. I think I still would opt for the SM seats because the DS seats have a sort of reverse curve to the upright that my back does not like. Also the DS seats are much softer and the early cars have a very soft suspension, the combinations almost makes one car sick . I do plan to install the second SM seat. In any case, after driving the car for a few weeks now I really like the SM seat.
