I can't say K-Pop doesn't influence the protests at all, but I think the K-Pop is just a tool that keeps the protests getting together. In 80s and 90s, we sung some songs which have the lyrics that means protesting. In recent protests, many young generation participated and they are familiar with K-Pop.
One of the most important things for protests in Korea is non-violent, because if the protest is violent, opposite side focuses on the violence and distort the opinion of the protest. And another most important thing is showing how many people agree with the opinion and giving opponent pressure consecutively. So we need to spend a lot of time on the road. To do that, we utilize some songs which is old one or recent K-Pop for fun and boost the mood.
In conclusion, non-violent and some fun for lasting the protests is the most important thing in Korea as long as the protests take long time and is important one.
--------- This is just my own thought and could be different from the real fact.

I'm from the generation of political protests in the 80s. The protests were often violent, mostly because the army responded with extreme brutality. However, we had protest songs that became our voice. These songs were banned by the government, and many of the artists were imprisoned, but we still sang them! And I still remember the lyrics.

As a Korean in my 20s, I never expected to witness the impeachment of a South Korean president twice. In 2017, the first female pesident Park, was removed from office following massive protests, partly fueled by public outrage over the Sewol Ferry disaster. Now, in 2024, president Yoon's handling of the Itaewon tragedy has further deepened the nation's discontent, including the martial law.
Martial law was a thing in the 80s where my grandparents generation experienced so it's shocking for us too. I hope this chaos ends by this Saturday and be the last protest. I recommend u to check out president Park protests cus the population is not comparable to yoon.

@francoismarc3 Thanks for replying always! :) Many ppl in korea have an interest to politics including the students.
So the prosecutors in SK have the power to suspend the departures normally or the police. Like somali case, prosecutors done it to ban him. President Yoon has been banned from leaving the country by the Ministry of Justice amid a deepening political crisis. And there are three teams that are investigating him including the prosecutors & police.
Protests u saw with kpop, there were many uni students, youngsters in 20~30s. They used kpop to keep themselves energized at the cold weather in peaceful way ofc. This president made millennial generations move so he's in big trouble.

    Hi, Francois!!!
You asked, "What is the connection between bringing the U.S. flag to a political rally/
protest in Korea?" First, as an American who has been living in Korea for almost 20 years, I love
and support Korea very much. I think the main reason is obviously, that the U.S. and Korea both have significant strategic alliances
when it comes to geopolitics in the region as you may know. So, it is in the interests of both
left and right in the political spectrum in Korea to show their solidarity and support for the U.S. because, without the
America's support, South Korea is in a very vulnerable situation, economically, politically, militarily, and diplomatically.
Korea and the U.S. both need each other but South Korea heavily depends/relies on America for national security in particular.
This is the reality!! I disagree with this statement, but some people even go as far as Korea being a vassal/proxy/puppet/pawn state to
the U.S. as well as Japan. Anyways, all you have to do is look at the
map of the Korean peninsula and its geographic surroundings. Korea is surrounded by many powerful countries like
China, Russia, Japan, and also hostile North Korea just a few miles above. Also, the U.S has a heavy military presence in the
Republic of Korea for many years for its protection. It is no secret that Korea has always been the victim of foreign invasion/occupation by many countries
throughout history even as far back as the Mongol invasion about eight hundred years ago.
Now, why K-pop stars do not tend to openly and expressively show their political views as American celebrities do, you ask?
Some do but most tend to keep it to themselves because it is not in their interest fearing retaliation and repercussion. Korea's
democracy and freedom especially when it comes to political freedom of speech and expression is very short and "different" compared to the U.S. It has gotten
a lot better recently but compared to the U.S., Korean people simply do not feel comfortable and it's still culturally a taboo thing. I hope you understand what I have
said here today. As always, peace and best wishes brother!! Have a great day!!

Let me tell you why K-pop stars can't express themselves publicly. It's related to culture. Korea is a collectivist secular culture. As you know, the agricultural culture of growing rice has been intensive for a long time, so it has to be done by moving in groups centered around a leader. That's why most of Asia is collectivist. The West is a nomadic culture, so individualism has developed. In agricultural culture, the group often comes before oneself. So, they are very mindful of the group so as not to harm others. Japan is a typical example. In particular, Korea has experienced rapid economic growth, so worldly 'money' is the top priority, and on top of that, collectivism exists, so if K-pop stars speak up, they suffer economic losses and are likely to be lynched by others. In the West, it's just an expression of individual opinion. In Korea, individualism is not as developed as in the US, so it may seem like there is no political freedom. I admit it. However, there are times when collectivism exerts its power, such as when there is a war (Korean War), danger (IMF in 1997), or a national event (2002 World Cup). Therefore, this is a cultural phenomenon, so there is no wrong way to say anything.
The reason why they carry the American flag for political activities is because of the conservatives. The conservatives are older and have experienced a lot. I didn't understand it at first, but to them, the American flag saved the country and is a symbol of freedom. They were invaded by neighboring powers, but they accepted American liberal democracy and started living well. On the other hand, the progressive Democratic Party, which is expected to take power soon, hopes for equality. They will make more voice in their relationship with the US and Japan, and difficulties are expected in the Korea-US relationship.

I'm super interested in this phenomenon because Korea has a highly educated society with aboit 80% percent of the population having received degrees, as far as the research I read states. So I'm wondering now if this educated population will begin to focus their academic acumen more on politics. What will happen to future would-be leaders when they need the people's vote. Throughout their long history, Korean students have always been very proactive in their fight for freedom and democracy for hundreds of years (like the March First Movement, etc.) And they often used music to promote solidarity. The only difference among generations is obviously their choices of music/ songs. In the 1960's their choice of songs were more solemn I'd say. But this young "M-Z" generations aren't familiar with older Korean songs and chose to use K-pop songs/ parodies that are more upbeat. Proof that these younger generations are in tune with current politics (to the surprise of many older generations) and more hopeful and positive in their messages. They are NOT "influenced" by K-pop, but rather using it for their best expression/ message of hope and resilience.

Until 80s, Korea had censorship and there were a lot of songs expressing resistance and unity of general public used in protests. The time has passed and the younger generation is no longer familiar with such songs, and protests gradually became peaceful as the public were no longer supporting the violence. So when this crazy martial law has occurred, the young generation joined the protest for the first time in their lives, and they used k-pop instead of the old songs in the already built peaceful protesting tradition. That's how I view the current protests.

I like your take on Kpop and political activism and In my opinion it has to do with Asian cultural difference as well as the Loyalty to their homeland and patriotism. I watch a lot of Kdrama and they are always about loyalty and pride for the country and siding so it makes sense they protest well.
In other countries I heard the French are experienced protestors but they are from different history and cultures.
Thank you for the thought provoking content .

In 2013, then-President Lee Myung-bak clashed with protesters and fired water cannons and tear gas at citizens in the cold winter under the pretext of suppressing violent protests. There were actual deaths as a result. We do not engage in violent actions during protests so as not to provide a pretext for clashes. It was a harsh suppression that always occurred during the presidency of the right-wing regime. Even if the political police on the side of power are in charge of the protest site, they cannot stop legitimate, peaceful protests. My husband and I took our elementary school-aged daughter and one-year-old daughter to eighteen impeachment rallies in the cold winter to impeach Park Geun-hye. At the time, we were safe except when the extreme right-wingers, waving the American and Korean flags and supporting the dictator's daughter, verbally and physically abused and threatened the children for holding impeachment posters when they were near the protest site. Impeachment is an act of using the power granted by the people for personal gain or ignoring and endangering the safety of the country. And it is a demand of the people when the separation of powers is not maintained.(separation of legal, administrative, and judicial powers)
Yoon Seok-yeol has violated all of them. Article 1 of the Constitution of the Republic of Korea
①The Republic of Korea is a democratic republic.
②The sovereignty of the Republic of Korea
    resides in the people,
and all powers emanate from the people.

You’re totally entitled to get involved in the Korean politics! You have lived there many years and paid tax. The politics there affects your life. You may not be able to vote and it’s all the more reason why.

    The very important word in the Korean subtitle is mistranslated, so I'm a little nosy.... --;;
It's not martial arts, it's martial law... It's a video about martial arts, and there's a subtitle...
