Here's the top answer from Quora by Shun Lü for the question IN WHAT WAY IS CHINA DOING BETTER THAN THE WEST:
One thing that doesn’t get talked about is how well China has managed to avoid the kind of cultural atomization that the internet age has brought about in the Western world.
This is a weird one to explain. Hold on.
Before the internet, American mainstream culture was mainstream. Unless you paid for cable, there were only a dozen or so channels to watch on TV and only about 3 or 4 of them presented political programming like news or talk shows.
Believe it or not, there was a time when parents and kids in the US shared roughly the same world view and wouldn’t try to murder each other 5 minutes into any political discussion.
Fringe ideas like anti-vax, flat-earth, creationism etc. were not given a voice (at least not a credible one). This kept the nation on the same page culturally. And given that most families shared a TV or two, kids and parents consumed the same content, ensuring cultural continuity between generations.
The internet and smartphones have changed all this. Americans now all live in their own personal cultural bubble. Families no longer agree on the same basic set of facts because everyone has a algorithm-driven, highly personalized social media feed selling them a completely unique world view. This has lead to political polarization, social dissonance, and societal breakdown. There is no such thing as “mainstream culture” anymore in the US, or much of the Western world.
Bizarre meme movements like the Boogaloo Boys are only possible in a society where every fringe idea can find a microphone online.
    -
In China, there are more smartphones and internet users than anywhere else in the world, but mainstream culture is still very mainstream.
Internet media is closely monitored and regulated. Fringe theories, even ones that have nothing to do with modern China or the CPC, are censored. The govt even mobilizes celebrities to promote the kind of mainstream thinking they want the populace to adopt.
Believe it or not, time travel is a big genre in Chinese TV dramas. However, even here the CPC has regulations. There are strict guidelines how just how far a show is allowed to distort history, even history from centuries or millennia ago that have nothing to do with the CPC. The goal is to ensure everyone has an accurate understanding of Chinese history.
There’s still a huge cultural generational gap for sure, but not nearly at the same level as in the West. Parents and kids can at least still agree on things like how many genders there are, and whether or not vaccines will cause autism.
Another seemingly excessive rule in Chinese entertainment is that video games are not allowed to depict real world nations fighting each other. This is why games use pseudo flags or pseudo names to represent real nations. The goal here is to minimize violent nationalism.
For a while there was even a ban on naming real world assets based on internet memes.
China bans weird and long company names
China's ban on names such as "scared of wife" or "prehistoric powers" comes after a crackdown on what Beijing regards as strange buildings.
    www.bbc.com/news/business-40945179
This one is hard to enforce of course, but it goes to show the extent to which the CPC wants society to stay on the same page. No one over 40 is likely to get silly internet meme references, so naming real world buildings after them would just provide a further point of division between generations.
    -
Of course, every Westerner reading this is furiously typing: oMg that SOUnds lIKE an oRwElLIAn nIgHtmARE!!!
Of course it does to you. You’ve been brainwashed from birth to believe that freedom of speech and expression is somehow sacrosanct. You can’t actually present a logical justification for why there should be total freedom of speech, you just believe it axiomatically.
I’m not going to try and convince you that you’re wrong. That is impossible, because this is your religion. I can no more convince a nun that God isn’t real than I can convince you that freedom of speech has no practical benefit to society.
Just know that the ultimate result of your sacred “freedom of speech” is a world where your mother is your mortal ideological enemy, and the only people who share your particular world view are all in the same subreddit.

The main strength is Meritocracy. China and the CPC is basically a corporate organisation. When Xi talk about democracy, he is talking about Meritocracy. He sees equal opportunity to excel as democracy. This is China's concept of government. He sees the communism party as an organ of the people, for the people. When you have thousands and thousands of Chinese cracking their brains everyday projecting what's going to happen today, tomorrow and the next 20 years down the road, you can bet those plans have considered many possibilities from A~Z and beyond. If anything is to fail their plans has got nothing to do with being not flexible, but these Chinese brains simply lack quality, or a drastic change in their political system took place. Rather than saying planning is what gives flexibility, which is more general, the one party system is the provider to flexibility, and this is true to the Chinese. The system allows for the party to add, remove, modify and execute those plans whenever however when they decided to do so. It's kind of an act of a SOB, but so far it has proven to be effective and efficient. Who knows that someday those plans are no longer beneficial to the people, that's when changes will come.

I agree with you that the main strength of China is that the Chinese live and thrive on their hard word, and also on their willingness to cooperate peacefully and harmoniously among themselves and with the peoples of other countries. Chinese people abhor wars and violent conflicts. By contrast, the western countries live on the wealth they steal from other countries, using brute force. The western countries need wars because wars are the instrument by which they can steal other countries. The militaries of the western countries are used more to attack other countries than to defend their own countries. By attacking other, they can steal the wealth of the countries they overpower. We can say therefore that the western countries act and behave exactly like gangs of thieves and murderers that attack other people in order to steal their wealth. But the low-life behaviour of gangs of thieves and murderers is not sustainable in the long run because the more civilised people always find means to protect themselves and to deter the thieves and murderers from attacking them. This is exactly what is happening with the western countries. The more civilised non-western countries have developed means to defend themselves against the western countries, thus breaking the way of life of the western countries.

When I was young, I was so admired the western culture, everything so exciting and so new to me, specially when it comes to ancient archaeology, how fascinating, the Great Pyramid of Gazi, the Stonehenge, the Teotihuacan Temple of Sun and Moon in Mexico...... The Chinese translated information just simply cannot satisfices my curiosity, so I turn to English material, eventually the mainstream research also cannot satisfices my hunger for more, the more I read, the more question I have, so I turn to alternative community to seek more research, the Finger Print of the Gods was the eye opening book, the moment I pick it up no longer turning back!
After years of hangout with all those non mainstream researcher and scholar, the more I learn from them, the more I'm glad to be a Chinese and receive proper Chinese study, including basic old Chinese literature reading! Most importantly, I have read most of the important history books left by our ancestor, except Confucius (I'm more of a Lao Zhi / Master Ghost Valley Philosophy type of person 😅) , Because most of the Westerner were Judeo Christianity, when it comes to Philosophical point of view, non can stand on a completely different point of view to see things, for one good example - why must Chinese government centralized it is governing, where is personal freedom? Where is democracy? When I listen to these people's criticism towards Chinese society, I feel like talking to a very young people, the meaning of Young here isn't mean a person's age, but this person's historical and culture back ground, be the US or the British, be the Germanic people or the Norsemen culture, non of these older than 2 thousand years of culture and country history, and these culture's population never reach as many as the Chinese, specially the family clan concept is extremely different between the Chinese and the Western world.
When I tired to explain the Chinese don't see the country as a country like the Westerner do, we see it as a one HUGE gigantic extended family clan with a population of more than 1 billion strong, therefore in our language we don't address others Mr/Mrs/Ms. but address them Aunt/Uncle/Brother/Sister, when we have a one huge family concept, some times personal sacrifice must be made to preserve what it is best for the family clan, it is a honorable thing to do, since China is a one huge family clan pretend to be a country, therefore, many people willing to give up many things for the common good of the this family clan, therefore, personal freedom cannot put Infront of the common interest or the greater good of the country/family majorities!
Well funny thing is that, they listen to my explanations and interpreted it as Hive Mind 😓There is no way the Western culture can gasp the concept of respect and obey one's parents/forefather/forbearer in the Chinese way, the Westerner already completely forgotten the ancient Shamanic concept of Ancestry, this concept was practice in almost in all Trible culture, from the Siberian shaman, to the North American native, from those tropical island to the god forbid frozen East, only the Chinese manage to carry that Ancestry worshipping/Highest Respect for Forbearer into a grand scale of civilization and empire. Even today, family member allow to worship any gods, joining any religion group, but non of these religion/believe system practice should come before family ancestry worshiping! (But to be honest, I hate doing the yearly ancestry respect ritual in Ching Ming Festival, why must we all doing it on the same day, so so so so over crowded!!!!! 😭) Forgotten who one's ancestor was, one will completely lost in the history, and disconnect one's soul with Earth.
Without our forbearer, we wouldn't be here today, without their sacrifice we wouldn't enjoy live a comfortable life! Now it is our time to do our part to sacrifice for our children's future! Therefore all I want to say is China's main strength is the unification of the heart of her people, and the wisdom past down to us by our ancestors!

Therefore I'm totally aware of the Tribal group around the world, another reason I take interest of them, because I feel the echo of their spiritual practice, also the knowledge they have, many mainstream ignore these people's scientific knowledge of the past, maybe these people do not describe it in the similar term as our modern knowledge, however these people still kept many lost knowledge of humanity. I also strongly suspect, the Japanese metallurgy knowledge wasn't imported from China => Korea => Japan, but already kept as a forbidden knowledge, therefore the Jōmon people of Japan do not use any metal tools, as soon as the Chinese starting their contact with Japan during 259 BC, Jōmon culture disappeared around the same time, and later we all know about the Japanese Samurai sword, if China or Korea was the metallurgy originated, how come both countries/culture cannot make swords like the Samurai one? Then there was another Hong Kong historian once mention about the legend of the couple swords, the sword smith's name was NOT a name, but a title Gan Jian 干將, it means Prisoner.

@@PascalCoppens According to the Western interpretation of Mayan/Inca/Aztec culture, a bearded white man came from the sea, he brought civilization etc to the Mayans/Aztec/Inca, the Mayan called him Quetzalcoatl/Kukulkan or Gucumatz, this is mirrors pre-Incan god Viracocha. And the Western historian go on and claim, this is why when the Spanish conquistador landed in the new world, the Aztec/Inca welcome them with an open arm, everything else is history.
Then the alternative community of the West actually try to drive the history narrative towards a similar direction on the Chinese Huang Di, they also claim Huang Di just like the Mirrors image of the Incan/Mayan/Aztec god Quetzalcoatl/Kukulkan or Gucumatz.
I point out something they are largely ignore, Huang Di wasn't fully equipped with a complete civilization's knowledge when he show up on the stage of Chinese history! He was learning it from others! Just like the Book of Huang Di, the book was in Q&A format, therefore, the medical knowledge of Huang Di was learn from another person. The person who invented the Chinese writing system, also invented them base on all the existing calligraphy from around, when Huang Di's won a tribal warfare, he seems absorbing all the other's culture and knowledge to develop something new, he also send his people travel to different place to acquire knowledge, so the process was slowly built up, gradually developed.
Unlike the ancient Inca, Mesopotamia or Indus valley, Neil River Delta, etc., seems like they are spring from no where but fully equipped with civilization capability, agriculture technology, writing system, architecture and astronomy knowledge etc.. the commonality here is, all of these ancient cultures claim their knowledge was given to them by the gods.
When I learn the ancient Greek philosophy and world view from Dr. Farrell, he said - the Greek view of our universe as a large size of man. (ancient Egyptian also has the same view , the Temple of Man explains it) This is completely match with the book of Huang Di, the Chinese medical treatment base on the very same concept, then finally I got myself into Occult Knowledge, the Earth energy grid and Telluric current mystery etc. Sounds like Chinese Fu Shui? Well the Western Occult group and secret society actually study it. Mainstream ignore it, but the whole bloody American Rail Way system was built on the Telluric energy line, the earliest Telegraph system was using this Telluric energy for communication, this is why their Telegraph cable was follow the rail way system!!!!

I think that word is “Trust”. Trust seems to be a big advantage that Chinese society has against societies that stress “checks and balances”, whose strength is now sapped by political strife/ breakdown, NTM outright distrust of big business, big government, etc. Yes, this “trust” can easily turn into a serious risk; look no further than the earlier history of the PRC. I can see writing a whole book about it so I look forward to reading it comes March. That said, I would not have offered “Trust” as China’s leading strength. I would agree with your Chinese friends who answered that it’s the Chinese people themselves. Specifically, the adaptability of the Chinese. And that would also be worth writing a book about.

Because China has a one-party system, all the good things as well as the bad things can be credited to the Communist Party of China, so there's this driving need for the CPC to learn from previous mistakes in it's policy planning. Whereas in Western democracies like the United States, the two parties constantly blame each other for America's problems, while simultaneously claiming credit for USA's successes. The Democrats and the Republicans rather fight each other than fight for America's future, and they don't learn from previous mistakes each time the government changes hands after each election. But if we look at China’s Confucius based civilization, you’ll notice similarity between China, Singapore, Taiwan, Japan, Korea as well as which group of people have been driving the economy in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. If we predict China’s future and analyze China base on western centric values, we’ll be in for a big surprise. Ditto to generalizations. It is an intricate synergy of strengths and weaknesses that produce the outcomes. The demonization of China by 5 eyes is the root cause of nationalism.
Their strengths and weaknesses will continue to evolve. Zhou dynasty started in 1600 BC - what you called written history. Unwritten is approximately 5000. So definitely not 2500 years. Their biggest obstacle will be the road blocks we are constantly throwing at them. This is not the only era China has been one of world’s superpower. There were many rise and falls. Tang Dynasty probably had one of the world’s top civilization in that era. Then they faltered and dynasty changed. Burnt out is definitely a real issue.

For nation to be successful the key strength is quality of human capital, ranged from leadership at the top to the ground of the work force. Talents and skilled teams are the key ingredients that build the past, present and the future. China is still learning, avoiding policies that lead to negative outcomes but adopt sound policies with improvements that served China well. China is also learning to apply some countermeasures in fencing off unkind foreign forces that pose challenges and disruptions to it people and enterprises. A very good and comprehensive video. However, one strength that you don't mention, which I think is critical, is China is outward-looking. The belt and road initiative is a good example. China is developing powerful win-win relationships with many countries that the West ignores. The cooperation with Eurasia and Africa, in particular, is very long term and mutually beneficial. Both regions have huge potential and are desperately in need of economic development to improve people's lives. On the other hand, the USA and its people are very insular. They don't know or care about other countries' welfare, just their own. Europe is a bit better. These international relationships will further insulate China and its allies from antagonist actions by the USA.

STRENGTH ATTITUDE: I would say it's the attitude and hope for the future. From Mainland Chinese perspective, the children's generation is going to do better than the parent's generation. It went from famine and starvation during the Cultural Revolution to being the biggest economy around in PPP terms. US has the "American Dream" and now China have the "China Dream"

You’re perhaps the most fair and well-rounded China analyst that I’ve come across in a while. This isn’t meant to be a personal attack, more so stating the fact that I, as a Chinese-Canadian, may not agree or relate to how many things work in China from a political and cultural perspective. However, there’s room for discourse and discussion.
I’m highly idealistic, which puts me at odds with many aspects of Chinese culture and how contemporary China’s structured. I’m also very much in opposition to top-down, highly bureaucratic power structures, and despite the points you’ve brought up in this talk, I am still of the belief that while I concede how such a system can make rapid strides in progress when it’s at its best, it’s also inherently more unstable and has less of a “maintenance mode” than many democracies, if you know what I mean. While progress can, and often does seem slower in democratic systems, I am still of the belief that democracies are inherently more stable and the lows don’t necessarily lead to irrevocable catastrophes.
Consider this as part of me that’s been influenced by “Western” liberal thought (but I like to feel it’s a universal value), but I am still of the belief that when a society and its citizens are raised on the foundations of believing they have rights inherent to them, and believe it to be a responsibility to uphold those rights in the face of domestic and external forces (of course, it often doesn’t work out that way), society is better off overall. Unfortunately, mainland Chinese who weren’t brought up with such ideas, often fall into the highly apathetic and blame shifting mentality of “it’s not my fault” or “I’m powerless anyway, so why bother.”
I’m all for change from below, from the grassroots level. Too often I see a mentality in China where people feel as though they are completely powerless to institute change unless they join the ruling class. The idea of “bottom up change” seems to be difficult for many to grasp. The idea of “the people” as a concept independent from state rhetoric, and that of a genuine functioning civil society has yet to really take off.
I am hoping for younger generations to shift their mindset towards some of the things I’m discussing here, and in some ways, they already are.

I am the beginning of the video, where Pascal asks what is China's main strength.
IMO it is the ONE PARTY system with politicians ascension according to merit.
It is way better than representative democracy, where people vote for all levels of political positions.
To reach the top political positions in China one needs to have a long history of competence and efficiency.
The most stupid representative democracy in the world is the U.S., where presidential candidates win the election when they have more billions of dollars for their campaign and can "lie better" with a straight face.
As Eric Li said in his famous TED speech years ago, Obama wouldn't manage to become the mayor of a small town in China.
In the U.S. lately we have seen idiots like Trump and Biden become POTUS.
Bush boy and Obama are a war criminals, Trump and Biden are proxy/hybrid wars criminals plus sanctions criminals.
The U.S. deserves to be a crumbling empire, I look forward watching the country's long and painful downfall.

I think to summarize China’s success to one strength is too simplistic and likely misleading. There are many Chinese societies in the world. They share similar cultural roots and many characteristics. Some are more successful than others. So I don’t think trying to distill a complex issue down to a single factor is necessary nor helpful.
But anyway, great video that outlines many issues and topics about China.

I've read that the West and China think differently. The west is based on logic ie proposition A is better than proposition B. Discussions becomes partisan and confrontational. Whilst Chinese are taught to think in dialectics. Both proposition A and B have positive aspects. Like Yin and Yang, opposing views can co-exist. The goal is to find a workable solution blending many points of view. Because discussions are more extensive, in depth and consultative in nature, many good creative ideas are generated because people are less dogmatic about defending particular points of view. Decision making is slower but execution is often faster because everyone is committed to the agreed solution. Maybe Westerners are unaware of this difference in approach. They mistakenly think decisions are top-down, lacking creativity, slowness is due to bureaucracy and speedy execution is due only to autocracy. Any thoughts?
