$1 billion dollar project in China = $50 billion in the USA for similar project. At least half of it will be lost lining the pockets of senators & congressmen. A pair of bolt/nut will cost the $20 in the USA, while it costs $0.01 in China. I'm talking reality here, not making things up. Labour costs are 4.5 times more in the USA, I'm factoring in the highest minimum wage of $3.40 in China against the $15 in the USA.
The supply chain in the USA is almost non-existent. Building America means, you have to buy all the equipments and tools from China, making China even greater & wealthier.
Then the Americans realised they do not have enough craftsmen, engineers and technical specialists, they've lost the knowledge and the institutions to teach technical subjects.. USA is a land of entertainers, lawyers, hedge fund managers, sportsmen, standup comedians, gangsta' rap artists, reality stars. Nobody wants a job that makes one sweat and get the hands dirtied.
Assuming the USA resolves to start from scratch, there will be another big rift and debate with the Republicans on how to spend the money, setting back the movement another 2 years, conservatively.
Maybe, just maybe, a republican president is voted in after Biden and in Trump-like fashion, take down everything Biden has put up for this infrastructure plan. There goes 4 years down the drain........
    Need I say more?

So, why would the US spend up large on high speed rail when it has nearly 100 years worth of aviation infrastructure? When, for the US, high speed rail is slower and likely more expensive? High speed rail suits China better because it is not producing suitable passenger airplanes, has a larger population, different inter-city distance and commute profiles and a command economy.

For every dollar spent on HSR , it generates $4 of return in revenues ; For every $10 billions of investment into HSR project, it creates 24,000 jobs for the city ; And for these reasons, US and it's current president have suddenly woke up to the reality and decided to pump in billions to get the [Project] started in no time, despite being late for decades ~

My honest opinion is that the United States will fail miserably by simply copying China’s model. The reason is very simple, both countries are adopting very different political systems to begin with. China doesn’t need to reelect its leader every 4 years and thus can develop its long term goal with consistent planning. The United States on the other hand is handicapped by elections which makes every president in power only consider to generate short term policies to please its voters and quite often every administration will undo the policies made by its predecessor with the only purpose of winning the next election, thus makes it impossible for the the country to have consistent infrastructure investment planning. The key ingredient of China's success is using money methodically on achieving long term vision by overcoming many short term achievable milestones with consistency through out the past 40 yrs. Of course, this is just one of the many aspects we can observe.

    • @PascalCoppens

It is indeed much harder to do in the West due to the change of power every 4-5 years. If we were more united, or when there is an external (China/Russia/Terrorism) or existential (Climate change/democracy) threat, only then the Western governments seem to make longer term commitment.

    • @yoyohighness
      @yoyohighness 3 года назад +96

@@PascalCoppens All that you've said makes sense. That's why it is important that the United States tries to create an anti-China consensus by constantly mentioning the "CCP" or "human right abuses" to recall the animosity of cold war and distrust with fear of communism . So to demonize China not only to rally its western allies but also to the American people, thus both Republicans and Democrats will back US governments policies. But I doubt the old method of adopting the cold war doctrine will work so well in the modern days since the world is no longer divided and people are now constantly traveling, economic tides make us inseparable, the modern era's CCP is no longer communistic all but its name, the old ideology of cold war no longer has the effect to the generation born after the 80's and the young generation of today's western world shares more similarities with the Chinese young generation with similar common values and culture such as environmental issues, tiktok, Justin Bever, Jackie Chan .... I met many startup companies in Shenzhen where there are many young entrepreneurs from Germany, US, China, Japan and Korea work together with no disparities. So I think say the next 20 yrs down the line, the new generation in power will have a very different view on China. Again, this is just my opinion.

@@PascalCoppens I think the USA is unable even to make long term commitments towards existential threats like climate change. Take the 2016 Paris Climate Agreement for example. Former president Trump just withdraw USA from it in 2017 and only recently did Biden administration return USA to the pact. All it takes is another Trump-like President in the future and take USA out of the climate pact again, so it's difficult to plan long term.

I think the challenge for China is more basic, for example Huawei has many patents but unfortunately many are for technology with limited applicability in nations that value individual freedoms and democracy. Much of Huawei's 5G and related innovations bolster state surveillance and control, facilitate digital currency and controls over money use, social control, geofencing, tracking and fencing of human activity, and so on. Tech that has little value outside of an authoritarian state. Such tech is unlikely to be useful in a socially advanced country, so will unlikely be adopted.

Looking back the past 40 years, the Chinese government must have done something right. From my point of view, the cpc is very different from the general concept of political parties in the west, it's more like an elite management team of a big company/organization.
The meritocracy system, the grassroots experience of all Chinese leaders, and continuous fulfillment of promises have given the general public confidence in the ability of the leading group. Also, there is the representative system that has voices from all walks of life and the accountability system.
Since the outbreak of the epidemic, more than 3,000 people in the Chinese government have been dismissed due to incompetence in response to the epidemic. In the western democratic system, despite the much worse performance, no politician has truly assumed responsibility.
Just as totalitarianism can lead to corruption, a multi-party system also magnified some weaknesses of human nature.

With this status quo not much can be accomplished. In the past the 'divide and conquer' strategy has been applied only to foreign countries (Vietnam, India, Afganistan, ....) now is a domestic strategy. The more weapons sold the better for oligarchy. The US imperialism is falling apart. American people are spoiled with the concept of freedom : I can say whatever I want (means a government official can lie and he is Scot free), I can carry gun(I can kill others), I can refuse vaccination. I think there are a number of people that could've improve their life more if they could further their education more. For examples, some European countries don't have to pay for college. I've heard/seen quite a number of people foregoing college because they couldn't afford it. I happen to be lucky to work and pay for my own tuition. Instead of becoming a medical doctor, I became an engineer. All due to the fear of not being able to risk the high tuition fees for medical school.

True. Why, for example, would the US spend up large on high speed rail when it has nearly 100 years worth of aviation infrastructure? When, for the US, high speed rail is going to be slower and likely more expensive? High speed rail suits China because it is better at producing railways and rail machinery than passenger airplanes, has a larger population, different inter-city distance and commute profiles and a command economy. Same in reverse, don't criticise China for not prioritising wide body airplane manufacture.

When I look at America, I get really sad. And I wonder: how did a country get so lost along the way?
Because it didn't invest in the qualification of its people, in researches that don't yield profit for the companies and, mainly, because it didn't invest heavily in education, which is the most important asset of a country. When I look at student debt, I am impressed with the way in which financial institutions act like a cartel, negotiating these debts and the State does nothing, as this is the market and the private sector has the power to decide the educational future of a country and private interests are above the nation.
But everything was left to the private sector, which only seeks profit, but that's ok, because they are in the market to make money, so the State has to be free to invest where companies have no interest in investing because of the financial return .
I have always greatly admired this country, but it has lost its way with so many enemies often created artificially, and the country has failed to take care of its people as it deserved and set the standard for the entire nation, but not just the luckiest.
Unfortunately, even if they start investing today, it will take decades to get results, as this generation is already lost and it will take time to produce results, and if the attempts of professional politicians and the lobby do not harm the initiative.
      Sorry for my english.

@DragonballxNaruto Many Chinese students remain in America even after they graduate, and many academic studies have their names in scientific articles. In the PISA exam they reign absolute, USA is the 38th. So who should invest in better education and why?
As I said, the education of a people is the greatest asset of a nation, absolutely nothing surpasses that.
Of course, we must first give the people the necessary comfort so that they think about education without having to think about how to feed themselves and have a roof over their heads.
People don't need government charity, but opportunity and conditions necessary to prosper, so health, education and housing go together in a nation that seeks exclusively the prosperity of its people and not just a privileged few.

If I may express a few thoughts, to refer to the US a “democracy” and China as “authoritarian” is a bit of a red herring. I like to view the US as a capitalist economy where the large corporations, through money and special interest groups, essentially run the country, so it is pretty low on the measures of being democratic.
I view China as a market economy, where corporations are not allowed to have a lot of power. Decisions are made through a unified party of 90 million selected people, to benefit the well-being of its citizens. It is a 1-party social democracy that focuses on the longer term, promoting through meritocratic selection to run all aspects of the various levels of government by highly qualified people. It has a high approval rating by the people.
The Chinese increasingly view the US political system as failing, dysfunctional, primarily serving the needs of the 1%. Give me your feedback on this. Are they somewhat right? It is worth discussing further.

      @PascalCoppens  3 года назад +6

When I said "autocracy" I did refer to that in the context of how the West views China,. Whether China is a democracy is maybe a topic for another video once. I agree with you that China at times is more democratic that America - because it is more effective in changing things for the population. But at same time, I believe that when power cannot be challenged easily, it can lead to decisions that are counter the population. A meritocracy with experts like China is definitively an advantage to change society for the better, but it can also corrupt at one time with the same effectiveness against the population. The question many have is how we know that Chinese leaders will always do good for its population if they are not elected by people outside of CCP? There have been good and bad emperors in China...and although we see the same outside China, the damage can lasts no longer than 4 years until others get elected. My personal view is that Chinese trust and respect their leaders highly, and that is the real reasons good leaders perform well. The unknown for many is how a bad leader can be contained.

First of all, great speech! Very insightful!
But I have a much less optimistic understanding about America. First, fear. America fears losing its number 1 status, which has little to do with the well-being of the country. They should put American lives before American ego.
Second, caring. I highly doubt Biden genuinely care about the poor. But even if he did there’s not much he can do about it. Caring about the people need to be a commitment by the whole government (in the larger sense of the word) and the people. While China has no shortage of selfishness, that kind of caring is built into their political and social culture. That’s why it works, sometimes. In America it’s the reverse. Selfishness is sanctioned as “individualism.” Any investment towards the poor is branded with the S word, socialism. While attitudes are changing old mindset dies hard.
Now leadership is practically non-existent inside America. All we get from Washington are platitudes. Everything they do is either too little or too late. Abroad, US is more of a bully than a leader. A true leader does not coerce others to follow. But that’s what America does: coercion through guns, sanctions, and, even with the Five Eyes, orders. Now I don’t see China as some kind of global leader either. I don’t think countries right now have enough in common to build a foundation for leadership. We should just try to get along with each other and take care of ourselves. Some day, we may be ready for real globalism.

In confucius idea, we should build ourselves first, be good to our own people, when we could really achieve that other people (countries) will take notice and follow you

Might need about 30 years so that'll be around 2050 provided the goal post doesn't move.

    1. Cause it works.
    2. The US is falling behind and somewhat regressing.
    3. The middle class income in the US has been stagnant for decades, while major corporations and billionaires gets richer and more influential.
